  • There’s no doubt a lot of us are feeling a bit lost or struggling at the moment.

Well you’re not alone. In Bounce Back, Andrew talks to prominent Australians about major challenges that have been thrown their way, and how they’ve overcome these difficulties on the road to success.

In this episode Dr. Rochford speaks with Richmond Tigers Captain Trent Cotchin.

In 2016 The Richmond Football Club was in the dumps, finishing thirteenth. It is fair to say the fans weren't happy with some wanting to overthrow the Board and the Coach and Captain in the media firing line.

Whether Trent Cotchin was cut out to be a leader was a regular talking point, Trent himself had doubts. One year later Richmond FC are AFL Premiers, breaking a 37 Premiership drought. They followed up with another Grand Final victory in 2019.

Their Captain was then and remains Brownlow Medalist and three-time Richmond Best & Fairest Winner Trent Cotchin.

This series will feature some of Australia’s most recognised sports men and women, prominent businesspeople and well-known politicians, allowing them to tell their story, in their own words.

Bounce Back is about promoting well-being and good mental health, by showing that even in the most difficult of times, there are people who you can turn to for support - whether they’re mates, family, colleagues, professionals even your neighbours.

It’s about how to look after yourself when things are tough, believing in yourself and knowing you can come through it even stronger.

In this episode Dr Rochford speaks with Bronte Campbell. You'll know her as an International swimming champion. She represented Australia at two Olympics and at Rio in 2016 she and her team won gold in the women's 4X100 Freestyle Relay in World Record time, breaking the record they previously set in 2014.

From the highs of winning gold to days later finishing fourth in the 100 metre freestyle, a race she went into as World Champion. Despite swimming with "a body that feels like its held together with sticky tape" Bronte is training for a third Olympics in Tokyo in 2021.

Her training partner is also her closet rival and happens to be her sister Cate Campbell.

We investigate how and why this practise continues unabated and how our forces are striving to stymy it without tearing delicate cultural fabric or sensibilities.CREDITSGuest: Detective Superintendent Jayne CrosslingHost: Madeleine WestExecutive Producer and Editor: Elise CooperAdditional Audio Production Support: North Coast EventsRESOURCES - Crime Stoppers https://crimestoppers.com.au/ - Australian Federal Police https://bit.ly/AFP-human-trafficking - My Blue Sky https://bit.ly/my-blue-sky - Red Cross https://bit.ly/red-cross-support - Sky Warp https://bit.ly/skywarp-help - ThinkUKnow https://www.thinkuknow.org.auIf you are a victim of trafficking or know someone who is contact the AFP on 131AFP (131237) or email [email protected]

  • Tony Albert of the Kuku Yalanji people is one of the most lauded and prolific Australian artists you’ve probably never heard of. His work has attracted enormous attention and a slew of major art prizes for his extensive body of work centred on ‘Aboriginalia’; his self-coined descriptor for kitsch, divisive representations of Indigenous culture and characters popular in the 50s and 60s. Tony charges these naive objects and their implied stereotypes with highly political sentiments exploring representations of race and difference. We explore Tony’s lived experience as a young gay man, ambitious and educated, confronted with decades of endemic stereotyping and discrimination. And how it is that despite all the reasons for anarchy, Tony’s art is steeped in themes of unity and forgiveness.CREDITSGuest: Tony Albert @tonyalbertHost: Madeleine West @madmadeswestExecutive Producer and Editor: Elise Cooper @elisejcooperAdditional Audio Production Support: North Coast Events https://www.northcoastevents.com.au/LINKS: - Duty Of Care, Glassworks https://bit.ly/3kaBtGK - You Wreck Me https://bit.ly/youwreckme - Hyde Park War Memorial https://bit.ly/hydepark-tonyalbert - We Can Be Heroes https://bit.ly/tonyalbert-heroes - Projecting Our Future – Art Gallery of NSW https://bit.ly/projectingourfuture - Catalogue of previous exhibitions and work available online at https://tonyalbert.com.au/#Exhibitions

  • What would you do if one day you were hit by a bus. Not a metaphorical bus, a literal bus. For actress Madeleine West, in the middle of her soapy drama career acting on TV soap ‘Neighbours’ she found herself laid out on a hospital bed after a freak accident saw her hit in the head by a bus on a busy Sydney street. What followed was a diagnosis of an acquired brain injury, years of therapy, and a long road to recovery. The invisible hero of this episode is a woman Madeleine will probably never see again. A woman who helped her overcome a trauma that had paralysed her for 18 years. On the morning of the 18th of May 2019, Australians woke up to vote in the Federal Election with most expecting the Labor party to elected to Government and Bill Shorten to be Prime Minister that night.

The polls, media and public commentary all pointed to that result, after almost beating Malcolm Turnbull in 2016 Labor were confident this were their time. Soon after the polls closed things weren't looking good for Labor. This certainly wasn't the plan.

Within hours Bill Shorten had phoned Scott Morrison to congratulate him on his unlikely victory. Bill announced he would stand down as Labor leader but committed to stay in Parliament under the new leadership. He's currently the Shadow Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme and for Government Services.

Well you’re not alone. In Bounce Back, Andrew talks to prominent Australians about major challenges that have been thrown their way, and how they’ve overcome these difficulties on the road to success.

In this episode Dr. Rochford speaks with Johnathan Thurston, who many consider to be the NRL's greatest ever player. He has won an unprecedented four Dally M Medals, the highest individual award in the National Rugby League, and three World Golden Boots.

As Managing Director of the JT Academy, he is making a difference in the lives of young Indigenous people through well-being, education and employment programs. In 2019, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to Rugby League and as a role medal. In 2017 he was awarded the Human Rights Medal.

Not bad for a kid who was knocked back time and time again. Told he just didn't have the right body-type to pursue a career in Rugby League.

There are few Australians who won’t have heard of our guest Nathan Buckley.

Nathan’s footy career is the stuff of dreams. He's been the Collingwood Football Club's senior coach since 2012, before that he played 260 games with the club, establishing one of the best football resumes in the game’s history. He won the Copeland Trophy, Collingwood’s Best and Fairest Medal, six times.

As captain between 1999 and 2007, he led Collingwood to two AFL Grand Finals despite the pies falling short both times, he personally starred with leading in the disposals in each contest and winning the coveted Best on Ground Norm Smith Medal in 2002.

He was selected in the All Australian team seven times, he captained the Australian International Rules Football team against Ireland, and in 2003 he won the AFL's highest individual honour, The Brownlow Medal.

In an, at times, controversial coaching transition Buckley took the Senior Coaching role at Collingwood in 2012. While the football world adored Nathan Buckley the player when he was flying high and the team was winning, when the Pies were regularly losing under Buckley the coach, supporters questioned his value and whether or not being a great player qualified someone for a coaching role at one of the top AFL clubs and... Collingwood supporters weren't shy of letting him know of their thoughts.

And with most other footy fans - and the media - happy to see Collingwood in turmoil, the pressure mounted.

In this episode Dr. Rochford speaks with returned serviceman and Paralympic Gold Medalist Curtis McGrath. In 2012 he was a solider deployed as a combat engineer in Afghanistan, he and his unit were sweeping an unoccupied police unit when he stepped on a bomb. Moments later Curtis looked down and saw that both of his legs were gone, as he was being carried away on a stretcher his said to the blokes around him "You'll see me at the Paralympics".

Fast forward four years and Curtis is Australia's flag bearer at the 2016 Rio Paralympics Closing Ceremony having won gold in the men's Paracanoe KL-2 division. He has won a swathe of medals in global competition. He has won ten world championship gold medals, set numerous world records and captained the Australian team at the Invictus Games.

In this episode Dr. Rochford speaks with the Head of the NSW Communities and Justice Department, Michael Coutts-Trotter. He has an interesting perspective and insight into the prison system, as he served three years for conspiracy to import heroin.

When he started as Department Secretary, Michael wrote to his 40,000 new employees.
"There is one thing I want to tell you about myself, you may know it already but if not I want you to hear it from me first. As a teenager I used and supplied drugs. In 1984 I was imprisoned for conspiracy to import heroin, I spent nearly three years in jail and then around eighteen months on parole".

He told his staff of prison guards and welfare workers how he 'deserved to go to prison' and that his background would be an asset rather than a liability as he took over the state's courts and jails.

In this episode Andrew speaks with Anna Meares, regarded as the greatest ever female track cyclist. Anna is the only Australian to have won individual medals at four consecutive Olympics and at Rio in 2016 was Australia's flag bearer.

But back in 2008, Anna almost lost her career and her life when she broke her neck during a track accident with just 2mm being the difference between life and death. Despite this just ten days after her accident Anna got back onto a stationary bike and pedal for a minute and later that day pedaled for five minutes. Seven months later she went on to compete at the Beijing Olympics.

Anna provides us with a detailed and honest insight into both her athletic career and personal life and talks us through the ways she dealt with the darker moments that she has confronted.
