South Carolina’s controversial school bathroom law is now in effect. It was slipped into the state budget and requires students to use bathrooms based on their biological sex.
A couple of months ago, lawmakers were working on this legislation in the South Carolina State House. At the same time, a Rock Hill School Board member created a bathroom policy for the district with the same wording.
The budget proviso is state law as of July 1, and other districts will have to follow in Rock Hill's footsteps to keep vital state funding.

An 8-year-old girl died after being found in a hot car in west Charlotte on Wednesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.
CMPD officers responded to a call to assist Medic on Wilkinson Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found an 8-year-old girl in critical condition inside the car. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The child's mother, 36-year-old Ashlee Stallings, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse by willful act causing serious injury. She is currently being held in the Mecklenburg County jail. Court records show Stallings was given a $250,000 bond on Thursday.

The North Carolina General Assembly raced Wednesday to advance legislation before completing its chief working session for the year — even as lawmakers know they could return later this summer to settle unfinished business.
The Senate and House are roughly $300 million apart on how much to spend over the next 12 months, with the House seeking to spend the higher amount. A great deal of the House's extra spending would raise state employee and teacher pay above what the current second year of the budget already directs. The Senate wants to stick to the second-year raises — an average 3% raise for teachers and 3% across the board for employees.
The competing plans do agree on spending $487 million for programs that provide money to K-12 students to attend private schools or receive other services. The money would remove waiting lists for two programs. The House and Senate budget bills also back spending $135 million for child care center grants that will no longer be provided by the federal government starting next month.
With hopes dim for a broad agreement by week's end, House Republicans advanced a separate bill Wednesday that would allocate $67 million for the child care grants for the next six months. The Senate would have to agree, too.

The Charlotte Hornets are officially in the Charles Lee era with the introduction of the championship-winning assistant as the team's newest head coach.
Lee was introduced during a news conference in South End Charlotte on Tuesday. Team leaders and Lee are adamant about pushing the team to the top of the NBA.
"We have a very good team," Lee said. "We've been snakebitten by injuries but I'm looking forward to this talent-rich group doing everything they can to be healthy... This group is focused on the right things... We're going to compete every night."

When it's hot outside, the last thing you want is a broken air conditioner, but local HVAC companies say extreme heat is putting systems to the test.
"I called for support because my thermostat was on 71, but was registering 75," Christy Elmore, who lives in Matthews, said. “Children don’t sleep well when it’s hot, right? So, it’s certainly been a challenge.”
She reached out to Acosta Heating & Cooling for help. The company is among those who say their phones have been ringing constantly with people concerned their air conditioners aren't cooling efficiently or are no longer working in this week's extreme temperatures.
"The warmer it is the more it stresses air conditioners and the more people we’ve got calling in," Lauren Acosta Huckleberry, President of Acosta Heating & Cooling, said. "Definitely make sure that the outdoor unit is clean. Definitely change those filters regularly.”
Lack of maintenance, leaking fluids, and clogged filters are just some of the issues an air conditioner could have.

After a scorching weekend, things are going to stay red hot in the Carolinas this week. Forecaster Larry Sprinkle says we can expected temperatures in the mid-to-upper 90s with the heat index making it feel like 100-plus degrees. The heat and humidity will remain oppressive thorugh at least the end of this week. The weather will be the worst starting Wednesday, when have an extreme risk for dangerous heat.

Meanwhile, Charlotte city leaders are set to vote on the proposed renovations to Bank of America Stadium. If approved, Charlotte would contribute $650 million toward the upgrades. The WCNC Charlotte Weather Team wants you to be Weather Aware because of the dangerous heat in the Carolinas beginning this weekend.
Afternoon high temperatures will climb into the mid-and-upper 90s beginning Saturday. The hot weather will continue through at least Wednesday.
The hottest and most humid days of this heat wave are expected to be Sunday and Monday. These two days will likely see heat indices reach at least 103 degrees in Charlotte. It is possible some locations in the Carolinas could be a degree or two warmer. Even so, dangerous heat conditions continue until at least Wednesday.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1-4, and a family from Gaston County almost joined that statistic when their 2-year-old daughter nearly died at a pool party.
The family's celebration narrowly avoided tragedy and the girl's parents say the outcome was truly a miracle.

There were tense vibes and words after what was supposed to be a vote passing a proclamation in support of Pride Month failed to happen during Tuesday's Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners meeting.
County Chair George Dunlap said the reason is because the proclamation wasn't submitted soon enough to be on the board's agenda to vote. Dunlap said the deadline is 11 days before the board meets.
Other commissioners, including Pat Cotham, pushed back against Dunlap's reasoning, saying even though it wasn't submitted on time, it's too important of an issue to not be voted on.
"I am so tired of being politicized," one person said during the meeting. "Commissioner Jerrell, I agree with you. Your vote today does not validate or invalidate who I am, but it sends a message to your community. And the message will be that Pride Month was not important to you."

Charlotte residents are divided over proposed renovations to Bank of America Stadium following Monday's public comment session with Charlotte City Council.
The council held a two-hour listening session Monday afternoon giving anyone wanting to voice their feelings on the proposal a chance to speak. The plans include installing huge screens and gathering spaces outside the stadium with many upgrades inside, including new seats, more bathrooms and better accessibility for fans.
If approved, the city would provide $650 million for construction. The money would come from the city's tourism and hospitality tax fund. Over 20 people addressed the council and their opinions varied from full support to folks entirely opposed to giving any public money to Panthers owner David Tepper. The reasons against the project ranged from the Panthers' on-field performance (or lack thereof, lately) to Tepper's estimated net worth of $20 billion.

A piece of Charlotte's past is set to open this weekend at the Charlotte Museum of History.
The Siloam School, which has been standing since the 1920s, has been restored after an eight-year effort to raise $1.2 million for its preservation.
The "Save Siloam School" project was funded entirely by the community and was relocated to the Charlotte Museum of History in September 2023. The school sat abandoned in the Mallard Creek area for many years and the museum intended to save it and restore it for educational purposes.

Charlotte city leaders voted 8-3 to approve the Queen City's 2025 spending plan Monday night.
City officials have spent the last few weeks laying out their goals and making adjustments, including potential changes to the city’s 1.5 cent property tax increase, a possible $1 million in more funding for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in light of the April 29 ambush, and much more.
The final budget resulted in lowering the property tax increase to 1.37 cents.
Around $23 million in budget adjustments were made several weeks ago and the budget is a total of $4.16 billion after adjusting to the lower tax rate hike.

The Catawba Nation is getting ready to build a brand new Two Kings Casino and Resort. It's been in the works for years, but it's not one step closer to reality.
The groundbreaking of Two Kings Casino had been delayed due to a lawsuit between the Catawba Nation and the former casino developer over the ground lease for the land.
The Catawba Nation settled with Sky Boat Gaming in May for an unknown amount.

North Carolina House lawmakers on Wednesday approved legislation that would automatically send 16- and 17-year-olds who commit violent crimes straight to adult court.
The changes would rework some bipartisan juvenile justice reforms that took effect over four years ago addressing 16- and 17-year-old offenders.

Tuesday night, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners voted to adopt the budget for the upcoming 2025 fiscal year.
County leaders approved a $2.5 billion county budget for Fiscal Year 2025. This number represents a 5.9%, or $140 million increase, over the county's 2024 budget.
These numbers, along with sustained growth and the lack of affordable housing options for many in the area, have many residents asking where's the money?
