Arts & Faith community members Lindsey Dunn, Christian Jessup and Brian Duignan met up to discuss the group's Top Ten Ecumenical Jury Films for 2024. The purpose of the project is to create a list the jury would recommend to Christian audiences. The reasons that one might recommend a film vary widely from person to person. This year's list was created by 15 members of the community.
Brian Duignan is a family medicine doctor who developed a passion for film around age 10. His love for film was re-ignited in 2010 when he connected with the Arts & Faith community. In this first episode, we explore the rocky roots of the marriage between Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula, establish how the town of Macondo was founded and discovered, and find out that our main character is Aureliano Buendia, who is facing a firing squad and remembering the day he discovered ice.
We also speculate on what the story might be saying about connection, isolation, and politics in the world of Colombia.

Harrison Martin, Anthony Holden, and I came together to talk about the North Carolina Film Critics Association (NCFCA) nominees for 2024. The NCFCA is made up of 70 some members who either work or live in the Tar Heel state. To see the full list of nominations, as well as previous years' winners, visit the website.
This ambitious group boasts 27 categories of awards, including some unusual categories such as voice actor, directorial debut, breakthrough performance, the Ken Hanke Memorial Tar Heel Award for a film or person with a North Carolina connection, and a lifetime achievement award that honors a contribution to cinema in a different category each year. This year the group elected to award an achievement in cinematography. We chose to talk about 16 of the categories for this conversation. We encourage you to follow the group's business at ncfilmcritics.org or on Twitter @NCFilmCritics.
The final winners will be announced on January 3, 2024. Stay tuned until then.

It's time for the Sekai Taikai. Welcome to Barthelona, it's time to see who has a DOG IN THE FIGHT. Is there a snake hiding in the grass or perhaps SNAKES ON A PLANE. #cobrakai

Steve invited me on his show to talk about the Netflix distributed film, His Three Daughters. Over the course of three days, three estranged sisters reunite in a cramped New York City apartment to watch over their ailing father during his final days in Hospice care.
With my father and mother both in live-in healthcare facilities for the first time, this movie opens the gateway for our thoughts about death, dying, complicated family dynamics, and the art of saying goodbye.

I’m joined by “Introvoid” Steve Barnes and “Voidmaster” Nate Dunn to discuss one of my favorite childhood time travel movies, Lionel Jeffries’ The Amazing Mr. Blunden (1972). We discuss my history with this movie, the intricacies of time travel by drinking, and what modes of time travel we think should be created. You may have never seen the film, but it was a holiday mainstay in British homes in the 1970s and 80s.
Description of the movie: It's a grungy night in smoggy London 1918. Mr. Blunden visits the home of the Allen family, consisting of the newly widowed Mrs. Allen, Lucy, Jamie, and little Benjamin. He offers Mrs. Allen the opportunity to take a job as a caretaker of an old derelict country manor called Langley Park. Once she's out of the room, he asks the two eldest children to help him correct a wrong he committed 100 years ago. He leaves the details fuzzy but assures them they will know what to do when the time is right. Our adventures with Mr. Blunden and these two children Lucy and Jamie, will involve ghosts, time travel, magic potions, sentient libraries, attempted murder by poison, attempted insurance fraud, romance, and hidden heritage. Available to watch on Amazon Prime.

This podcast is just my tempo. Steve, Lindsey, and special guest, Heather Barnes (Steve’s wife) discuss the behavior and teaching techniques of two cinematic music teachers, Fletcher from Whiplash and Mr. Holland from Mr. Holland’s Opus. As fellow children of musicians, Lindsey and Heather share their experience growing up with a father who wanted to encourage true excellence from their students. Steve also talks about his mentors and how they shaped him. And we all think about what it really takes to encourage greatness as a mentor/teacher.
We also talk about the unique stories these teachers spout to motivate their students. Sometimes, these same stories serve as ugly mirrors to their true, flawed philosophies. Expect the usual search for truth served with bountiful doses of vulnerability and humor. It’s what you can always expect from 1 of my Stories.
The music in this episode is an original composition by Michael Dunn (Lindsey’s dad), and performed live by the grades 4-5 students of the Crooked Creek Crickets on May 14, 1969. -
Apple TV will drop a new TV series, Time Bandits, based on the 1981 fantasy film directed by Terry Gilliam. 1ofmystories has never seen the movie and wanted to know about this formative film from Steve’s childhood. Also joining us is Aradiapedia from the Wheel of Time Spoilers podcast. Steve will be recapping the show weekly after it comes out on his podcast, Sweet Child of Time, so be sure to subscribe to his podcast for that content.
Movie description: Kevin loves history with every fiber of his being. His parents prefer to digest upon television series that vegetate their brains and make them non-curious. But when little people burst through his closet one evening, Kevin follows them through the portals of history on a grand adventure. Starring Terry Gilliam and co-written by Gilliam and Michael Palin, Time Bandits is a film that gave many children sweet dreams and nightmares for years to come after.
The TV show will drop on July 24, 2024 and will be directed by Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement.

Today we are talking about the 2015 punk rock horror feature, Green Room, directed by Jeremy Saulnier, starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, and big bad Patrick Stewart. In this movie, a punk band called the Ain't Rights diverts from their planned tour to makeup for their dwindling cashpool. Their matinee show for a crowd of skinheads goes off without a hitch, except for a few boos. All seems kosher until one of them discovers a dead body. Now, trapped inside the green room without means of escape or help, this group of musicians has to use their wits and ability to improvise to outlast the boots and braces in the Pacific Northwest.

In this episode, we cover the recently released Arts & Faith Top 25 spiritually significant films about crime and punishment, chosen by a jury of 17 film critics. I was one of the jurors, along with my co-host today, Christian Jessup. We talk about Arts & Faith, how this list came to be, and then list all the selected movies, focusing on some for deeper dives.
You can find the full list on the Arts & Faith website, at ArtsAndFaith.com, as well as a justification of each film from one of the jurors.
About Arts & Faith: The community originally began as a discussion board where members met to discuss the intersection of arts and faith. Today it's a website, but there's also a discord for people who want to join. The community collaborates to release three kinds of lists. One is an annual ecumenical jury that chooses the top 10 films of interest to Christians for the year. This has been going on since at least 2014.Then not every year, but some years, they release a top 100 films, which is ranked list. The last year this was done was 2020. Lastly, the group puts out top 25 lists on a particular theme. This can include movies from any year. This last kind is what we are talking about today.
About Christian Jessup: Christian Jessup is a filmmaker and critic based in Raleigh, North Carolina. With a diverse background in online media, podcasting, television appearances, and jury selections, he brings a unique perspective to film evaluation, exploring the intersection of faith and cinema, recommending films with moral and spiritual depth. As the fandom awaits the next and final season of Cobra Kai, let's take a moment to appreciate the fine season 5 storytelling that broke open the mythos further in the Miyagi-verse.
In season 5, The Big 3 (John Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald) and their fine team of writers filled in some gaps in the Miyagi-verse timeline that solidify the cannon of how these dojos operate and function in the world of San Fernando Valley and beyond. These events gel together to create a picture of two truths that are irrefutable in the Miyagi-verse: Cobra Kai wrecks chaos and division; Miyagi-Do brings reconciliation and redemption.
A closer look at this timeline of events elucidates a mythology that leads to inevitable conclusions for our characters. In other words, careful analysis helps us theorize where the story will end, and what will always happen in these respective dojos. - Mostrar mais
