This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we’ve got legendary warmwater fly tyer and Flint River guide Kent Edmonds (flyfishga.com) on to talk about Shoal Bass.

Join us as Kent shares decades of experience on one of the South’s finest waterways. One of only 40 US rivers to flow over 200 miles undammed, this gorgeous river is home to an equally untouched population of Shoal Bass, and Kent has been introducing anglers to “the waterfall bass” for over twenty years. Join us as he Kent gives us the scoop on why a trip down the Flint should be on every angler’s bucket list.

This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we’ve got Steve “Graz” Graziano, Peter John Cole, and Jason white head on to talk bass fishing on Lake Eufaula, the Cahaba River, and Lake Guntersville.

First up we congratulate Graz with Graz’s Guide Service on a recent co-angler win on Lake Eufaula. Graz has been having great success offshore, and this week he’s here to share his thoughts on how beginners should approach learning a new lake if all they’ve ever done is bank-pound or fish the shallows.

Then we swing over to the Cahaba system to hear from our friend Peter John Cole with Fly Fishing Alabama. High, muddy water has tapped the breaks a bit on an otherwise hot spring bite, but Peter reports that the waters are due to come down if we can avoid more rain and that the topwater bit should be good on the beautiful Cahaba. Join us as Peter gives us the report not just on the fly fishing, but on the state of the shoals’ Cahaba Lily Bloom.

Finally, we have Jason Whitehead reporting another contributor win on Lake Guntersville. Jason and his better half recently had a Great Day Outdoors fishing together, and Jason reports that due to lingering cool temperatures bass can be caught “any way you want’em” right now. Stick around to the end to see how long he thinks this awesome spring/summer transition will last before the dog days set in.

This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we’ve got Peter Jordan on to talk about how to pick out your first fly rod.

In this episode, we sit down with longtime fly angler and industry rep Peter Jordan to break down everything a first-time fly fisher needs to know when buying their first fly rod combo. From rod weight and line selection to understanding how your casting style influences rod choice, Peter brings two decades of experience and a deep knowledge of Gulf Coast waters to the conversation.

We cover why an 8-weight rod is often the best all-around option for anglers along the Northern Gulf Coast, especially those targeting both freshwater and inshore saltwater species. Peter also explains the importance of buying from a trusted local fly shop, where casting a few rods and getting hands-on advice can dramatically shorten the learning curve.

One of the key takeaways? A fly rod doesn’t have to replace your conventional gear—it can complement it. Peter highlights how a single fly rod can handle multiple fishing styles that would typically require several different setups in conventional fishing. That versatility makes fly fishing a great addition to your arsenal, not a departure from it.

Other highlights include tips on matching fly lines to your target species, how to avoid the most common gear pitfalls, and why a well-sealed reel is worth every penny if you’re fishing around sand and salt. Whether you're a total beginner or a bass angler looking to cross over into fly fishing, this episode offers clear, practical advice to get you started the right way.

This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we have a deep dive on Gulf strain Striped Bass from Peter Jordan, and a coastal freshwater report from Justin Dunnam.

If you’ve ever fantasized about chasing big, mean, and hungry salmon during their spawning runs, you won’t want to miss Peter Jordan’s deep dive into “‘Bama Steelheads” AKA native Gulf Striped Bass. Like Gulf Sturgeon, this large, anadramous fish has been greatly reduced from its historical abundance thanks to a host of environmental factors. But unlike sturgeon, stripers have a well-earned reputation as a stellar sport fish. Join us as Peter explains his fascination for the species and shares the best places and tactics to experience these trophy-sized, “searun” leviathans for yourself.

Next up we have Justin Dunnam, who reports that both the bluegill and flounder bite are heating up. Join us as we talk about how to adapt bass tactics to flounder, how to use artificials to separate bull bream from their smaller brethren, and how to make use of satellite imagery, Google Street View, and castable sonar units to e-scout your next honey hole.

This week, we’ve got Steve “Graz” Graziano with Graz’s guide service here to talk about Lake Eufaula bass, and the Mobile-Tensaw Delta’s very own Dip McMillian here to talk about crappie, loop knots, and getting kids in the great outdoors.

First up, Graz gives us the scoop on the bass situation. Bass throughout much of the state are transitioning to a spawn/post-spawn pattern, and in Eufaula in particular they are following large schools of shad. Join us as Graz discusses which baits do the best job of fooling shad-hungry bass. Stick around for a conversation on how to properly use spinning rods. While instructions abound for how to get the most out of your baitcaster setup, Graz says that his decades working with clients has proven to him that there’s definitely a right and a wrong way to use this versatile and often overlooked tool.

Further south, Dip reports excellent crappie conditions, with hungry papermouths eagerly chasing jigs almost everywhere in the many creeks and sloughs that make up the delta. We also dive into one of Dip’s many simple but deadly-effective little tips to put more crappie in the boat: the loop knot. Finally, those with Jr. hunters and anglers in tow will be pleased to hear that Dippie Outdoors has a busy summer planned, with tournaments, hunter’s ed classes, and more in store for future sportsmen and women.

The Alabama Freshwater Fishing report is your best resource for the Lake Guntersville Fishing Report, Weiss Lake Fishing Report, Lake Eufaula Fishing Report, Mobile Tensaw Delta Fishing Report, and all the creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in between.

Spring (and pollen) are in the air as anglers anxiously wait for water and wind levels to drop and make way for great fishing. First up this week we have Lee Pitts reporting in from Lake Weiss. Lee reports difficult conditions, but reassures anglers that for those willing to pay attention to their sonar and try new things, success can be had. Join us as Lee reminisces about night fishing from the bank with crappie, and stay tuned to hear modern night fishing tactics for when the summer heats up and the fishing cools down.

Next up we have fisheries biologist Mike Rigdon here to give us a deep-dive into an often overlooked component of successful fishing pond management: electrofishing surveys. Stay tuned as Mike explains the big health benefits this simple management tool can have for your personal honey hole.

  • Shannon Woods joins the show for a deep dive into bluegill fishing and the Scales and Tails Brim Series.

This week, host Brian Gilliland sits down with Shannon Woods for the show’s first full episode dedicated to bluegill fishing. A native of Butler County, Shannon shares his roots fishing muddy creeks and ponds with cane poles and hand-dug worms. He describes the variety of sunfish species found across Alabama and how even isolated ponds end up with fish, thanks to nature’s unlikely transporters—birds.

Shannon highlights the Mobile-Tensaw Delta as a sleeper hotspot for big bluegill and shellcracker, especially from late April through June. He breaks down his strategies for finding productive water, including targeting pinch points, current seams, ledges, and shallow flats with sandy or rocky bottoms. He notes that when water levels rise, fish move into the flooded woods—timing and conditions are key.

Gear-wise, Shannon sticks with the classics: 10–12 ft. cane poles, ultralight spinning combos, and a growing interest in fly fishing with a 5–6 wt. setup. He shares his bait preferences, leaning toward crickets for bluegill and worms for shellcracker, though he still remembers the tiny red worms of his youth that he can no longer find in stores.

Shannon also talks about the Scales and Tails Brim Series—an accessible, family-friendly tournament trail focused solely on panfish. The next tournament is April 26, with the biggest event of the year coming up May 17, where anglers weigh in 50 bull bream for a chance at a $1,000 prize. Entry fees are low, and you don’t need a fancy rig to compete—canoes, kayaks, and jon boats are all welcome.

To learn more or register, visit the “Scales and Tails Brim Series” on Facebook, or contact Shannon at [email protected] or (334) 508-0303.

This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we’re joined by special guest Adam Hudson with Blue Line Flies Company to talk about his favorite patterns for warmwater species. Spring is in the air (and in my sinuses, unfortunately) and it’s about to be creek-wading time throughout the state. This type of shallow, skinny-water fishing is perfectly suited for fly fishing, and whether you’re chasing smallies on the Tennessee, Shadow Bass on the Tallapoosa, or Choctaw Bass and Longear Sunfish down on the Pea River, Adam has fly recommendations for you.

Next up we have Clayton Meyer with The Obsession Outdoors here to talk about something we’ve never covered before: bow fishing. Clayton is “The Man” when it comes to putting clients on giant carp, gar, and (most interestingly) paddlefish. Stay tuned to hear about Clayton’s awesome operation, which includes wheelchair-accessible boats and a full lodge service up in beautiful Kentucky.

First up, we’re swinging up to the Coosa watershed to hear from Tina Morrison about the Super Bass Tournament and some other great events for anglers being held this spring. Gadsden, Alabama, is gearing up for the 18th annual Coosa Landing Super Bass Tournament, happening April 4-6, 2024. With a guaranteed $10,000 grand prize for first place, this tournament is set to be one of the biggest yet, drawing nearly 200 boats to the Coosa River. Hosted by the City of Gadsden and Greater Gadsden Area Tourism, the event features a huge prize pool, including payouts for the top 10 finishers, Big Fish prizes, and a special “Dash for Cash” for anglers who don’t place. Tune in this weekend to learn more about this awesome event, as well as Fish Fest and a Youth Fly Fishing Clinic.

Next up we have recurring guest Dr. Matthew Lewis on to talk about his upcoming book, Alabama's Best Fly Fishing: Complete Guide to the State's Best Fly Fishing. While the primary focus of this much-anticipated book is, of course, fly fishing, this book is set to become a local classic and a must-have for anyone interested in fishing Alabama’s many diverse streams, rivers, lakes, and, of course, The Gulf. The book won’t be released until April 15th, so this week’s show is as close as you can get to a sample!

This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we’re starting off with a talk with Fly Fishing Alabama Guide Ande Whitten to talk about fly tying desks and tools. Ande is a longtime smallie guide on the Tennessee River, and he recently launched the Small Creek Smallies Youtube Channel, where he publishes lots of cool warmwater “guide fly” ties that he fishes with clients. Join us as Ande shares what a fly tying desk can tell him about its owner, his favorite fly tying materials, and his thoughts on expensive UV curing lights.

Next up we have Matthew Frazier coming in from the Mobile, AL area. Matthew is the man behind the “Take Back Big Creek Lake” Facebook group that has been gaining traction in the angling world down in LA, and this week he’s here to give a report on the current situation after attending both Mobile County Commission and MAWSS board meetings. For those not in-the-know, Big Creek Lake, a much-beloved fishing spot that has built a reputation for producing trophy-sized bass and crappie, was declared as “permanently closed” to fishing back in February. Matthew is here this week to explain why he and others consider this unacceptable.

Finally, we hear from fellow Great Days Outdoors Podcast Network hosts Joe Baya and Butch Theirry, as well as Melissa Miller with the Mobile Boat Show, to talk about an awesome event coming up on the Gulf Coast.

This week, we’re joined by Steve Graziano at Lake Eufaula, Jason Whitehead on Lake Guntersville, and Dip McMillian in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Host Nick Williams introduces the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, highlighting their partnership with AFCO, offering a free sun protection mask with any AFCO purchase by texting ALFR to 7793452918.

Steve Graziano reports that although windy conditions have made fishing tough, recent weeks have been productive with quality bass, including several 5- and 7-pounders. He expects the full moon to push more bass shallow soon. Jason Whitehead updates us on Lake Guntersville, where warmer weather has triggered the spawn, and chatterbaits, rattle traps, and jerkbaits are producing well. Jason also discusses the differences in the northern and southern ends of the lake and the active tournament scene.

Finally, Dip McMillian shares that fishing in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta has been challenging due to fluctuating water conditions but expects bass to move shallow once temperatures hit the 60s. He also talks about a recent youth rabbit hunt and announces an upcoming youth hunter education course on May 3rd. This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we’re tuning in to hear from Peter Jordan down on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Peter reports that we’re still a week or two out from shallow water, spawning bass, but that now is the time to get out there and practice your cast and make sure you’re “ready to go” as those first few warm water days start to present themselves this year.

Next up we have Alex Davis, who has been getting on the bass on Lake Guntersville. Air and water temps are a bit colder on the Tennessee River, so anglers will need to “play it by ear” as fluctuating temperatures push and pull bass from their late winter and early spring haunts.

Finally, we swing over into Mississippi to hear from John Harrison on Lake Grenada. John has been booked solid with clients, and is reporting another spring of phenomenal crappie fishing. Join us as John discusses the brief window where anglers can experience some first-rate crappie fishing…without even firing up the boat.

This week on the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report, we have a special episode featuring Cindy Lowry from the Alabama Rivers Alliance and Steven Gann from Alabama Beer Company. We’re talking about something that might surprise you—the intersection of great beer and river conservation.

Steven introduces us to Alabama Beer Co., a brewery with a mission to create an easy-drinking, locally brewed light lager that supports clean water initiatives. Cindy dives into the work of the Alabama Rivers Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping Alabama’s waterways clean and healthy for anglers, paddlers, and all outdoor enthusiasts.

Together, they’ve launched the Drift Fund (Defending River Integrity for Tomorrow), which channels a portion of beer sales directly into small grants for grassroots conservation efforts. That means every Alabama Light Beer you enjoy helps fund local groups fighting to protect our waterways.

Tune in to learn about all the good ARA does for anglers in the state, and learn how you can support watershed conservation by doing something as simple as drinking a cold one on your next fishing trip!

  • The Alabama Freshwater Fishing report is your best resource for the Lake Guntersville Fishing Report, Weiss Lake Fishing Report, Lake Eufaula Fishing Report, Mobile Tensaw Delta Fishing Report, and all the creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in between.

This week we’re checking in first with Lee Pitts to hear how the crappie are biting on the Coosa River lake chain. Lee is reporting rapidly warming conditions, and as fish begin to move to spring patterns it seems “everything works.” Lee reports they’re catching them all the way from 30 to 4 feet deep, and that the shallows are already hitting 65 degrees in some places.

Next up we have Tina Morrison from the Gadsden here to let us know that the Rainbow Trout put-n-take fishery below Noccalula Falls on Black Creek is looking great this year. The pool below the falls has been stocked with 2,000 lbs of fish, and Tina reports that many of them were in the 10-12” range.

After that, we’ve got Clayton Batts reporting in from the Lake Eufaula area. Clayton reports hot bass action, and is staying busy putting clients on big fish and gearing up for the 2025 tournaments. He reports 25+lbs bags coming in off of the lake, meaning we’re already off to a hot start this year!

Finally, we have Andre Davis here to let us know that the creeks are already firing up, and that fly anglers can anticipate chilly wading conditions still, but hot topwater action as winter thaws and fish begin looking up.

This week we’re checking in with Dip McMillian to talk about how to use forward-facing sonar to locate roving schools of wintertime crappie. Host Nick Williams got to sit in the passenger seat with Dip on a recent trip where Dip put on a masterclass in cold water sonar usage and boat handling skills. Tune in to learn how to sweep large areas with sidescan, how to know when to leave uncooperative fish alone, and how to juggle fishing, livescoping, and boat positioning all at the same time. Stick around to hear Dippi Outdoors’ plans for the 2025 year.

Next up we have a special flyway report from Mobile Baykeeper’s Executive Director, Will Strickland. While waterfowl season has been rough across much of Alabama this year, Will and his Boykin, Lilly, were able to end the season with a “bang” and take home some Mobile-Tensaw wood ducks after the “snowpacolypse” thawed. Will also has good news to report regarding the federal mud dumping in Mobile Bay, reporting that commercial fishermen, recreational anglers, local conservation groups, and a key politician are all uniting in an effort to keep the bay clean and clear for generations to come.

Finally, we have Steve “the Graz” Graziano reporting in on bass activity on Lake Eufaula. With the wild temperature swings we’ve been experiencing, fishing has been challenging, but Graz has the tips you need to think on your feet and be adaptable as we finish out our fickle winter and move into an early, southern spring.

  • This is a special rebroadcast of the Alabama Freshwater Fishing Report. The report that is your best resource for the Lake Guntersville Fishing Report, Weiss Lake Fishing Report, Lake Eufaula Fishing Report, Mobile Tensaw Delta Fishing Report, and all the creeks, rivers, and reservoirs in between.

This episode Nick Williams is joined by Anthony Rabern with Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Earlier in the year we talked about Georgia’s Black Bass Slam, and this week Anthony is here to discuss their Trout Slam. Join us as we talk about the state’s efforts to stock brown and rainbow trout, and to hear about the wild brook trout populations in the Chattahoochee National forest. If you’re looking for a good excuse to find yourself “cloud hidden, whereabouts unknown” in Georgia’s mountains, you won’t want to miss this segment

Next, Nick talks with Norm Latona with Southeastern Pond Management, about pond fountains and pond aeration systems. Now is a great time to start thinking about getting ahead of the stratification that warm weather can bring to a pond, and today Norm talks about what aerators, fountains, and destratifiers will and won’t do for your private pond.

This week we’ve got two awesome deep-dives into winter fishing from Peter John Cole and Peter Jordan.

First up we have Peter John Cole reporting in from the Cahaba River. If you enjoyed our recent Big Bass Special with Steve Graziano (where we discussed how to find big winter bass holed up in large reservoirs) but you fish free-flowing rivers, then you’ll love this section. Join us as Peter gives us the skinny on deep water river lunkers. Where to find them, how to tempt them, and how to wrangle them all the way to your landing net.

Next up we have Peter “The Lost Angler” Jordan to give us a really thorough breakdown of typical winter fishing conditions in lower Alabama. Winter brings cold, muddy water, and this week Peter gives us a detailed breakdown of what exactly that does to the fishing. Join us as we discuss how vegetation die-off shifts forage and therefore bass movement in watersheds, the importance of scent and motion when targeting fish in muddy waters, and the importance of a little-known but widely-spread forage species that you’ve probably imitated a thousand times without ever actually seeing in-the-flesh.
