Kudrat Makkar is the Founder and Creative Director of MASTANI a luxury ethically made and sustainable women’s wear label.
Through her work Kudrat wanted to have a connection with native India in a way she could give back. Her vision was to meld traditional techniques in a modern way, through exceptional artisanal clothing.
These handmade traditional techniques are inherited by artisans from her ancestors.
The MASTANI artisans are masters in embellishment, hand looming, structure and contemporary silhouettes. They bring to life the design ethos which is to blend tradition and modernity, timelessness and uniqueness.
With a focus on sustainability, MASTANI provides a working environment that promotes strong ethical practices and full-time employment for our team, taking a holistic approach to the welfare of our team and in turn the local community. -
Welcome to the first episode of the Artisans of Fashion podcast. For this inaugural episode, I am honoured to be talking with a very special guest, John Cutler, a distinguished figure in the realm of bespoke tailoring.
John Handel Lawson Cutler is a 74-year-old bespoke tailor, and until very recently he was the custodian of J.H. CUTLER, a prestigious fourth generation tailoring establishment that was in his family since 1884.
Before handing the business over to his protege Sam Hazelton, John was the Managing Director of J.H Cutler. John is most known for his incredible creativity and skills as a master cutter.
A master cutter blends artistry with precision. In bespoke tailoring a master cutter is highly skilled in creating custom patterns and cutting fabric precisely to a client's measurements. They ensure perfect fit and style, translating unique body shapes and personal preferences into elegant, well-fitting garments.
Under John’s guidance, J.H. Cutler has dressed some of the most influential men in Australian history, from politicians to celebrities. Their approach combines the timeless skills of Savile Row with a commitment to personal service and the finest quality materials.
John's contributions to the fashion industry were recognized with the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2021.
So now, let’s delve into the world of artisanal craftsmanship and bespoke tailoring. Welcome, John!
