  • Recently, I was working with a few new parents who were feeling overwhelmed by the disconnect and misunderstandings that often arise when a new baby enters the picture. It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in the stories we tell ourselves—stories based on our fears, assumptions, and limited perspectives.

The thing is… those stories might not be true.

    - They might make you feel unwanted or unloved.

    - They might make you doubt your partner’s commitment.

    - They might make you avoid important conversations and misunderstand each other's actions.

Not every story we tell ourselves accurately reflects our partner's feelings or intentions.

The more we let these false narratives guide our feelings and reactions, the more complicated our relationships become—and the worse off we are as partners and parents.

In today’s episode of the Better Relationships After Baby podcast, we’re diving into “The Story I’m Telling Myself.” We’ll explore how these stories form, how they impact our relationships, and practical steps to align our narratives with reality.

    YOU’LL LEARN:

    - Why we often live in different narratives than our partners

    - How these mismatched stories can build unnecessary resentment and negative feelings

    - Practical tools to start conversations with clarity and align on values

    - Real-life examples of how these narratives play out and how to address them

Join me as we uncover the stories we tell ourselves and learn how to create a more honest, connected, and understanding relationship.

    About our guest:
Jordan is a pediatric and perinatal nurse whose heart has always been with mothers and children. After having a child of her own in 2019 and experiencing both birth trauma and the lack of support in postpartum from healthcare and our culture at large, a spark was lit in her heart to educate, and empower mothers in the postpartum period.
American culture leaves mothers isolated and unprepared for the intense holistic changes motherhood brings. In the last three years this radical transformation of identity, relationship reorganization, body image struggles, and priority shifts has fanned this spark into a flame to create a supportive community for mothers because it’s something greatly lacking in her own life. Jordan is trying to manifest this community of support and education with The Supported Parenthood RN.
By day Jordan is reheating her coffee 27 times while being bossed around by her toddler daughter, and by night she’s either working in the hospital or dreaming of ways to connect with other mothers.

    From Kristyn:
My name is Kristyn Dingman and I am so much more than a stay-at-home mother. I struggled with body image my entire life. I constantly compared myself to the people on TV or the women on magazine covers and wondered why I didn’t look like them or why I wasn’t as pretty as they were. I was insecure and always felt like I was being judged by my looks. As long as I can remember, I was always stepping on a scale to see what the numbers read or compared my waist size to my friends. It wasn't until I got pregnant with my first son that my entire world was flipped onto its head. I saw my body go through drastic changes in such a short period of time that I didn't really have time to see and appreciate my body and all it was going through. Once my son was born, I was bombarded with diet cultures, MLM schemes, and plenty of 'bounce back' businesses that constantly pressured me into getting my pre-baby body back. I was so lost and felt so alone. I had enough. I decided to make some changes and decided to put my mental health first. This was a whole new concept to me. I had never been the one to care by myself. I spent years at war with my body and decided to put an end to the battle. I started blogging and sharing my story with the world and wanted to create a place where others who struggle with body image and negative diet culture could come and feel represented. I wanted to show the real and raw sides of motherhood and what positive body image could look like for someone who struggled their entire life. Here I am today with an amazing community of people who follow along and have a safe place to feel loved regardless of their body, size, color, or gender.
