We’re back and I’m back chatting again with Dom Halbert, joined this time by his wife Christina. Ultra running continues to grow in popularity and I have had to concede that you don’t need to have a few screws loose to do it. Dom has been in it for a while now, doing events in the UK and the USA. Recently he ran about 125 miles at the Suffolk Backyard Ultra. We discuss Backyard racing and its mental and physical demands. With Christina we chat about the demands placed on the ‘support crew’ too! Whether you are a sceptic, tempted to give ultra running a go, or even sn experienced Backyarder.. this will make great listening next time you want to head out for that extra mile!Follow us on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/cambridgeendurancesports. Mark Matthews has been at the forefront of the news in the endurance-sports world recently as the team manager for his wife Katrina at the ‘Sub 8’ Project where she completed the Ironman Triathlon distance in 7:31:54!! Mark and I discussed his role and the tactics involved in this event at some length, but before we do so we talk about Mark’s own sporting background and achievements which are certainly wide-ranging and considerable! From junior triathlons to winning fun runs and then going into cross-country skiing and biathlon before returning to triathlon and winning the overall age-group title at Ironman Barcelona on his debut at the distance. Mark is a great fan of Cambridge and also has the honour of having won the Cambridge Punting Race!! You can follow Mark on Instagram at https://instagram.com/markmatt29?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=. It’s a slightly different episode this time, as I am joined by three guests: Michael Scott, founder, Neil Marsh, one of the organisers, and former guest Ian Williamson, one of the runners. The Hope Alive Tour is so much more than an endurance running charity event. Please listen to the whole of the interview as I think that the beauty and importance of the event comes through as the episode progresses. It was a privilege to sit down and chat with Dave Peck in his lovely house in Lode, just East of Cambridge. Aged 89 now, Dave oozes enthusiasm as he recounts the stories of the many challenges he has taken on. Visit our Facebook and Instagram pages (links below) to get an idea of the extent of his achievements in the tough sport of Duathlon (run/bike/run) at an age where most people might consider such endeavours impossible. There are not many runners who achieve age-gradings of over 90% but Nicola is one of them. Now in the V55 category Nicola still races at under 4 minutes per kilometre! What’s more she has a wonderfully balanced and positive approach to her running which we can all learn from. Nicola trains regularly with Cambridge and Coleridge and also comes to my Wednesday Run sessions. She is an inspiration for those finding it difficult to improve and find motivation as they get into their 40s and 50s. In this chat we discuss what has shaped Nicola as a runner and the secrets of her success. We wish her every success! You can follow Nicola McBride on Strava. There is something for everyone in this, one of my most informative and enjoyable chats. We talk in depth about Norman’s training and racing and how he has managed to reach such a high level at the same time as being a doctor and having a young family. Norman has a 2:16 PB for the marathon and hopes to go quicker still in Manchester in April. He has run a 64 for the half and has just earned his first England vest! He hasn’t been running that many years and there could be a lot more to come from this knowledgeable man who speaks openly and intelligently about running. We cover training methods, race preparation and nutrition, and how to combine a demanding job and young family with the kind of mileage and quality required to compete at his level. Enjoy Norman’s wisdom!!:) Follow us on Instagram @camendurancesportspodcast and like our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Cambridge-Endurance-Sport-Podcast-112279984010325/

Hayley Simmonds is nothing short of a cycling superstar. She has the British record for 10, 25 and 50 Mike Time Trials. She is a Commonwealth and European Games medalist and has won the National Hill Climb Championships! Not bad fir someone who used to be a heavyweight Cambridge University rower!! I really enjoyed listening to Hayley describing her journey into cycling and through her years as a professional rider. She rides on the road for CAMS - Basso and has now joined the Movistar e-racing team. Thanks go to former guest David McLean for putting me in touch with Hayley who must be the highest-profile sportsperson on the show yet! This is the first venture of the podcast into the strange world of ultra running but Dom’s story is just one of an ordinary runner who quickly realised that he likes to see how far he can push himself. Dom manages to combine recreational jogging with Parkrun , the Kingston Handicap and all the way up to ‘Backyard’ Ultra which he explains all about in the interview.
