“Today, we remember Mrs. Linda Gail, a Cornbread cousin from the start—a soul who found her place right here in our stories, our laughter, and our recipes. She followed Cornbread and Buttermilk faithfully through every episode. We are her family, and in true Southern spirit, when it came time to say goodbye, her family didn’t just gather a few chairs around a table. They prepared a meal as grand and generous as her own spirit, feeding not only the family but over a hundred friends and kinfolk who came to her memorial. Plates were filled, hands clasped, and the room echoed with that quiet, old-fashioned understanding that food could somehow hold the grief for a moment, could somehow stitch together what loss had undone. In the South, we lean on food when words fall short, and today, we remember Linda Gail in that spirit—feeding the soul with memories and a table set for a hundred.”

“Today, Buttermilk and I are taking you along to the wild heart of Dukes Creek, where the fish are sharp, and the rules are sharper. This isn’t a place where you keep what you catch—but if you wander over to nearby Smith Creek, you just might find yourself with a trout worth keeping. Stick with us through the cast and the quiet, and we’ll share a skillet recipe that does justice to a fresh catch, the kind of meal that comes alive with nothing more than a hot skillet, a little butter, garlic, olive oil, lemon and a love for the wilderness.”

Buttermilk and I venture into the wild, untamed spirit of Dukes Creek at Smithgall Woods State Park. It’s a place bound by its own fierce rules—catch-and-release only, barbless hooks, and artificial lures—where even a stray barbed hook can bring a steep fine. Out here, you leave behind the comforts of easy fishing and face the creek on its own terms.

There’s something healing in these wild places. Hemingway once wrote, “The world breaks everyone,” but he also believed there were places, wild and unyielding, that could make a person whole again. Dukes Creek is one of those places. It’s not an easy stream, not a place for simple pleasures. The fish are wary, and every cast is an act of patience. You work through the silence, changing flies to fool the fish, feeling the pull of the water against your line, becoming part of something older, something that’s been waiting.

As Papa Hemingway would say; “If we get into a fish, stay sharp. Pay attention to what gives you the thrill of that instant. Is it the flash of silver as the fish strikes? The sudden, fierce tension in the line? The curve of the rod as you set the hook, alive and bending? Take it all in. Hold onto that pulse in your veins, that quick rush that sets your adrenals alight. When you sit down to your fishing journal, write it all down. Capture the moment like you’re casting into it again, so you can feel it every time you read those words.”

Join us as we talk about casting into deep waters, about the quiet strength of wild places, and the way they can mend broken places in the soul—leaving us stronger than we were.

“Long before Halloween turned into a carnival of costumes and candy, it was a night steeped in shadow, rooted in Celtic soil where bonfires flickered against an ink-black sky, calling forth spirits from beyond. From these ancient rites and whispers of the Otherworld, a tale was born that would spread across time and continents—changing with each era but always laced with mystery. Now, Halloween is part celebration, part superstition, and maybe, just maybe, still haunted by the echoes of those who first lit fires to keep the dark at bay. Join us as we walk through the twisting roots of Halloween’s past and its spellbinding journey into the heart of modern America.”

As the first chill of autumn crawls through the pines and smoke from the chimneys rises, there’s nothing quite like a steaming bowl of chili and a skillet of cornbread to pull you back to a simpler time. But when Robbie Montgomery served up her cornbread to a hungry Tina Turner in the 1960s, it wasn’t just about feeding a legend—it was about preserving a piece of the South’s soul, a recipe passed down through hands that have felt joy, pain, and a touch of the unknown.

Life in the South has always been about more than just fried chicken and Bar-B-Q. It’s about preparation, too—about knowing that the same winds that carry the scent of honeysuckle can also bring storms. With the recent hurricanes reminding us how quickly disaster can strike, we’re turning our focus today to something every family should have ready at a moment’s notice: a well-stocked Go Bag. We hope you will listen to Cornbread and Buttermilk’s disaster preparedness episode, and share it with a loved one, or a work colleague. Sit down and listen with them, these are lessons we can never hear too often! This information may save a life one day. It might save your life if you act upon the suggestions Cornbread and Buttermilk talk about.
Now, let’s talk about what should go into that bag. Here’s the short list of essentials that every Go Bag needs:

    • Water – Three bottles per person to stay hydrated in case of emergency

    • Food – A 3-day supply of non-perishable items, enough to keep you going until help arrives or you can return home

    • Warmth/Shelter – Include an emergency blanket, three 12-hour body warmers, and a poncho to protect against the elements

    • Medical Supplies – A first aid kit, pain relievers, and 3 pairs of medical gloves are a must. Don’t forget a 3 to 7-day supply of any life-saving medications and copies of your prescriptions. Add an N95 or cloth mask and some hand sanitizer to stay safe from illness

    • Lighting – A flashlight with extra batteries or a crank NOAA radio flashlight will keep you out of the dark

    • Radio – An AM/FM NOAA emergency portable radio with batteries can keep you informed when other lines of communication are down

    • Support Supplies – Be sure to pack a whistle, a sturdy pair of work gloves, sturdy shoes, a change of clothes, 3 face masks, wet wipes, pocket tissues, and plastic bags (one 30-gallon bag and three 10-gallon bags for multiple uses)

    • Packaging – All these items should fit neatly in a backpack, bag, or bucket with a handle, ready to grab at a moment’s notice

    • Medical consent forms and important medical information for dependents or minors

    • Copies of important documents like identification, insurance cards, and property deeds

    • Spare eyeglasses and personal hygiene supplies for comfort and care

    • Emergency cash—because in a crisis, ATMs might not work

    • A list of emergency contacts, including an out-of-state contact in case local networks are down

“Up in the wild, untamed hills of North Georgia, the land has a way of keeping secrets—secrets whispered through the roots of ancient vines that clutch the red clay soil like an old soul hanging on to its last breath. It’s a place where the grapes ripen under a merciless sun, and each bottle of wine tells a tale—some sweet, some bitter, but all of them true. Today, we take you on a winding, dirt road journey through these vineyards, where time moves slow, but the stories age like good wine—rich and haunting. Welcome to Cornbread and Buttermilk. Pull up a chair and let’s pour you a glass of Southern history.”

The blackberry pie was famous in these parts, but not for the reasons folks let on. Granny’s secret wasn’t just in the ripe fruit or the perfectly flaky crust—no, it was the bottle she kept hidden on the high shelf, just out of reach. A splash of something dark, potent, and forbidden went into every pie. But no one dared ask, not after old Mr. McCravey got a little too curious and couldn’t quite remember how he ended up under the Black Walnut tree at midnight, a slice of blackberry pie still warm in his hand. Cornbread and Buttermilk couldn’t help but wonder—was it the recipe or the rum that made Granny’s pie so intoxicating?

Ellijay isn’t just a town nestled in the hills; it’s a place where the cool mountain air mixes with the scent of apples like a quiet conversation between old friends. The apple trees stretch out across the foothills, row after row, their branches heavy with fruit, as if they’re holding secrets they’ll only tell if you listen closely enough. The Blue Ridge Mountains stand guard, like they’ve seen this all before, and perhaps they have.

We’ll walk through these orchards soon, where the farmers, with their calloused hands and quiet ways, have been tending these trees for generations. Their roots dig deep into the red clay, and so do the roots of the people, passing down their knowledge as naturally as the apples fall in autumn. First come the blossoms, then the fruit, and then the harvest—a cycle as old as time, carried out by those who know the land.

We’ll make our way to Panarama Farm Market, where the fried apple pies are hot enough to scald your mouth if you’re not careful, but sweet enough to make it worth the burn. The apples themselves, from the tart Rome Beauty to the softer Honeycrisp, tell a story of this place—of mountains, of weather, and of a stubborn kind of love that keeps things growing.

Before we leave, there’s always a story to tell. Imagine a harvest festival, the kind where you can smell the cinnamon on the wind, and the cider warms your hands. Families wander beneath the golden leaves, and baskets of apples overflow like offerings at some strange and wonderful Southern altar. It’s a scene so vivid it feels almost unreal—like a dream, except it’s all happening right here.

Southern hospitality is like a well-seasoned cast iron skillet, passed down through generations. It's not just a matter of saying “Hey y’all, come on in!” — it’s about the food you lay on the table, the stories you share, and the warmth that lingers long after the last bite. Down here, in the heart of fall, hospitality takes on a richer flavor, like sweet potatoes roasting in the oven, or a pecan pie cooling on the windowsill. You see, food isn’t just food in the South; it’s a language, a secret code passed between hands that have known hard work and harder times. Cornbread and Buttermilk know that a good meal can soften hearts, soothe old feuds, and make even the coldest days feel like a long-lost friend returned. It's the way the kitchen fills with the scent of spiced apples, bubbling away in a deep dish pie, or a pot of chili simmering slow, each bite carrying a hint of something unexpected — maybe a dash of dark humor, the kind Uncle Robert might sneak into a story when you least expect it. Like he’d say, "You come for the pie, but you stay for the company, even if you find yourself a little more talked about than you planned. There’s the crispness in the air that pairs so well with the crispness of fried chicken, laid out on a picnic blanket under a maple tree. There’s a comfort in knowing that hospitality in these parts isn’t just about the polite smiles or the “y’all come back now,” but about setting a table where everyone feels seen, and sometimes, just a little bit judged. Because in the South, hospitality is a feast — a mix of warmth and wariness, kindness and curiosity, sugar and spice. It’s knowing that food is more than nourishment; it’s a bridge, a balm, a little bit of bait to draw folks in, and maybe even a test of their character, like a game of cat and mouse in the parlor. Come fall, the food gets heartier, the air cooler, and the welcome—well, let’s just say it’s as sincere as the heart of a pumpkin pie, with a little tartness to keep things interesting. So, whether it’s the gentle humor of Auntie Lou who’ll dish out both wisdom and cobbler in equal measure, or the knowing grin of Uncle Robert, who sees right through your polite pleasantries, Cornbread and Buttermilk understand that hospitality here is always served with a side of story, a dash of wit, and a heaping spoonful of something deep, comforting, and a little bit mysterious… just like a good Southern meal in the fall.

"When our mother entered her mid-90s, we noticed her mealtime appetite was languishing. She picked at her food, often eating only half of what was on her plate. I thought back to the meals Momma used to make for my brother and I. My mind conjured images of boiled shrimp, salmon patties with dabs of mustard on top, and, of course, juicy hamburgers on fresh sesame seed buns, lightly toasted and buttered with a thin spread of Duke's mayonnaise. She topped it off with a slice of red vine-ripened tomato and a pinch of salt. Now that was a flavor bomb.
Before fat became a dirty word, food had flavor. I don't recall our burgers tasting like the corrugated box the refrigerator came in—dry and flavorless. Instead, I remember sinking my teeth into a juicy burger that was more than a little messy, with flavorful juices running down the corners of our mouths, making the paper napkin a necessity.
I wonder if we've become so preoccupied with fat phobia that we actually believe the fake meat burgers taste as good as grass-raised, grass-finished beef that has never had steroids and antibiotics injected. I think that when we jostle our taste buds with flavor, we can reawaken the joy of family mealtime, and remember to say Grace.”

The mystery of which came first will finally be revealed, ( The Peanut or the Goober)? The rise of Georgia’s prominence in peanut production is attributed to a botanist in Alabama. Would you like to know how many uses there are for peanuts. The answers await in episode 26 of Cornbread & Buttermilk’s, southern culinary stories. Join in the discussion, who do you think has the biggest peanuts, Georgia or Virginia? Cornbread would like to hear your Coca-Cola/Peanut stories too. Have you ever got tickled and sneezed a mouth full of Coca-Cola while on a date? We hope we answer some of the questions our listens have about the origin of this well traveled crop. Like Coca-Cola the peanut has a welcoming home in the state of Georgia. For Cornbread they will always be linked to memories of a simpler time, when the local grocery store owner was also your neighbor.

Cornbread & Buttermilk recall July 4th’s of the past. They discuss the special meaning of the celebration, and why we celebrate with fireworks, parades, and food. They call attention to the South’s contribution in winning our countries freedom from British rule, and taxation without representation. Cornbread recalls the Swamp Fox, South Carolina’s original gorilla warfare General who drove the Red Coat insane, and disappeared into the Low Country Swamps. We salute our countries Southern forefathers, Washington, Jefferson, and Madison, all great contributors to the freedom that Americans enjoy today. As they each took part in the creation of the U.S. Constitution. It is the wisdom of these men, and the courage of those who served under them that we celebrate on July 4th.
Now, on to the food, parades and Bar-B-Q.
Cornbread reviews Ellijay Georgia’s Holt’s ACE Hardware, at 305 S. Main St. Ellijay Georgia, and their great selection of BlackStone Griddle’s, rubs, and Lanes sauces.
