  • Hey everyone! It’s all come to this! Our last episode of Dark Roast Comics Podcast :) This week we spend some time talking and wrapping up conversations on all the ongoing series that we're currently covering on the show. We give our thoughts on all the series so far, and give some predictions on where we think all the series will go in the future. We sincerely hope you enjoy this conversation, and hope that you’ve enjoyed this journey with us as well :)

We want to take this time to really thank everyone for coming on this journey with us. A little over a year ago we wanted to create this passion project of ours and share our love of comics with everyone, and we’re very glad to have had the platform to do so through this podcast. We’re glad to have found an audience that was willing to go on this journey with us week in and week out. Whether you’ve been with us from the start, or just discovered us now, we thank you all the same. You guys are the reason we come together every single week to talk comics, and even though this podcast is ending, it doesn’t mean the end! Perhaps in the future we will revisit doing a podcast again, and if that day does arrive, we hope everyone will be willing to come on the ride with us again! We’ve learned so much from doing this podcast, and if we do come back, we promise to come back stronger than ever!

Thank you all so much for being with us through this whole journey. Thank you for giving us your precious time and allowing us to be a part of your lives.

    Thank you.

    -Jerry and Victor

  • Hey fellow Dark Roast Citizens! This week we breakdown and dive deeper into Knightmare with Batman #67, peel back more layers on the mysteries of Justice League #20, get in some high octane action with High Level #2, and experience heartbreak with Venom #12!

But before we talk comics, we got some news for everyone. This episode will be the penultimate episode for our show, which actually kind of works with as it’s episode 52 :D Next week we will have a reflection and predictions episode and it will be the last episode for our show. We both decided that due to the changes that will be coming our way in the near future, we cannot keep up with the weekly scheduling that our show centres on. We decided now would be the best time to bring upon the end of the show. We hope everyone checks back in next week as well. We will have some crazy spicy theories for all the ongoing series we are covering!

For our coffee this week we have a brew called Sitio Lavrinha roasted by De Mello Palheta Coffee Roasters. This will be our last week with the guessing game, so let’s see how we close this out!

What did you think about this episode? What are your thoughts on the Knightmare arc in Batman? Do you think the future Superman spells trouble? What do you think of the potential retcon in Venom? Let us know what you think!

  • Hey guys! On this week’s episode we tackle the difference between a change in ideal vs a change in execution in The Batman Who Laughs: The Grim Knight #1 and witness the full transformation in Blackbird #6.

But before we talk comics, we talk a bit about the state of the MCU, and discuss a bit about the veteran casts in the Avengers. We’re not quite sure how some of the veterans will end their MCU run, but we’re definitely putting our theories out there!

For our coffee this week we have a brew Ardi roasted by Timbertrain Coffee Roasters. I’ll say this about this coffee, there were some surprise flavour notes that we would’ve never guessed. And even after the reveal, we still might not!

What did you think about this episode? What do you think about the backstory of The Grim Knight? Do you believe the transformation in Blackbird is justified, or does it spell trouble? Let us know what you think!

  • You guys! It’s a huge milestone week for us as we finally hit episode 50! Words can’t express how excited, and how grateful we are to have been able to put out content every week and have an audience for it :) So a big thank you to everyone on this journey with us, and allowing us to share our passion with you!

This week we tackle the return to Knightmare in Batman #66, a recruitment scheme in Green Lantern #5, a mischievous encounter in Justice League #19, the humbling and bumbling team in Young Justice #3, and dive deeper than ever in the dark world of Die #4.

After our usual Humble Heroes Agency segment, we go into a discussion about our show’s progress over the past year, and we look back at how some of our perspectives have changed while doing the show. We hope you enjoy our discussion. We also want to know how you think we can improve our show, as we are always looking for feedback and how we can put out a better product for our audience. Make sure you hit us up by email or Twitter and let us know!

For our coffee this week we have a brew called Nemba roasted by Propeller Coffee Company. We always receive amazing coffee from Propeller, and we have no doubt that this week is going to be the same!

What did you think about this episode? Are you satisfied with Selina’s answer? Where does Hal’s allegiance lie? What do you think will become of Superman? Let us know what you think!

  • Greetings! For this week’s episode, we breakdown and discuss all things The Flash #65, Heroes in Crisis #6, Shazam #3, Captain America #8, Daredevil #2, Oliver #2

But before we get into comics, we try and catch up a bit on how our week has been. We kind of go on a huge tangent, so you know, the usual. Victor got himself a new phone, and his Dokkan experience has significantly improved. We also talk a whole lot about stand-up comedy. So, we hope you like stand-up comedy :)

Since the new coffee subscription box hasn’t arrived just yet, this week we decided to go out to the local market and pick up some coffee to try! We decided to give a coffee called Guatemala from Irresistibles a try. This is a ground coffee to start, so we’re getting a pretty strong oil aroma from the start. Let’s see how this one turns out! Also, we said in the episode we said the Irresistibles brand is from President’s Choice. Boy were we wrong! It is in fact from Metro. So yes, mistake corrected, phew!

What did you think about this episode? What did you think of The Price crossover? Are you any closer to resolving the mystery in Heroes in Crisis? Do you feel sympathetic towards Daredevil? Let us know what you think!

  • Wabam! In this week’s episode, Victor and Jerry discuss all things Batman #65, Justice League #18, Guardians of the Galaxy #2, Venom #11, and two brand new series in Sharkey The Bounty Hunter #1 and High Level #1!

But before we get into comics, we catch up on the week we’ve been having. We discuss a bit about the Aquaman movie, so if you haven't watched the movie yet, spoilers! It’s pretty minor but if you care about that stuff then check the timestamps below and skip right to the comics segment.

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Alfonso Matheus roasted by Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters. Pretty excited about this one as we got some very nice aromas from the beans. We hope the brew comes out just as nice and elegant!

What did you think about this episode? Are you enjoying the current Batman and Flash crossover? How do you feel about the new team in Guardians of the Galaxy? Do you like the changes made in Venom? Let us know what you think!

  • PLEASE READ! Hey so before we get started, a quick note on Captain Marvel #2's discussion. So the villain's name is Nuclear Man, and he was formerly called Mahkizmo. We got that mixed up initially and ended up calling him Masochist, which is definitely not what Mahkizmo means. Sorry about that!

Hey-yo citizens! This week we talk all things Batman Who Laughs #3, Flash #64, Captain Marvel #2, Blackbird #5, and Gideon Falls #11. It’s an amazing week for indie comics, and these issues further cement to us that indie comics are the future of the industry. We feel the creative freedom that comics creators get really help the story shine and allow for many unexpected things to happen, and Blackbird and Gideon Falls are the perfect examples of that.

But before we get into comics, we catch up on the week we’ve been having, and it has been dominated by - you guessed it - Dokkan! But this time for good reason! The new Broly movie banner came out for our Global version that we play, and the units are all the hype! We dropped stones after stones to try to get these units. Let’s see how we did!

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Sumava roasted by Rosso Coffee Roasters. At the initial sniff test, there’s a pretty earthy undertone, but we can’t seem to get anything distinct from it. Let’s see how the tasting goes!

What did you think about this episode? Do you think Batman made the right choice? Do you agree with our sentiment on Captain Marvel? Are you excited about the future of Blackbird and Gideon Falls? Let us know what you think!

  • Hey-yo citizens! This week we talk all things Batman #64, Green Lantern #4, Justice League #17, Young Justice #2, Daredevil #1, Die #3. Another long list of comics for the week as we try to cover all grounds! Packs. Full. Of. Jams!

But before we get into comics, we catch up on the week we’ve been having, and we yet again talk about the game that we’re both into - Dokkan Battle! We talk about what makes Dokkan fun for us, and how it compares to a lot of other gacha games.

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Ethiopia Ardi roasted by Seth Taylor: Coffee By Design. This comes from a new coffee house as we’ve never received anything from Seth Taylor before. We’re always happy to get new coffee from new places! Let’s see how this one turns out!

  • Hiya! This week we breakdown Heroes In Crisis #5, Captain America #7, Justice League Annual #1. If you’ve been following the epic of Justice League, then this annual issue is a can’t miss! Lots of reveals in this issue that is sure to have major ramifications in the main title. Usually the annuals are more standalone, but not this one!

But before we get into comics, Jerry and Victor talk about their return to playing NBA 2K19 on the PS4. We’ve sort of developed a mini rivalry in the game, with our games coming in way too close of a call. If you ever want to play some games together, let us know!

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Colombia Narino roasted by Fonte Coffee Roaster. This coffee came from Jerry’s cousin Elbert from the States! Thank you for supporting us Elbert! One day we should try and get him on the show with us, and talk comics!

What did you think about this episode? Do you buy into the message in Heroes in Crisis? Do you think Captain America made the right choice? What do you think of the major reveal and development in Justice League Annual? Let us know what you think!

We got two brand new #1s this week so it should be a very exciting time to get our hands on some new series. Can’t wait to see what the new Guardians team will do and how the alternate history of Oliver will shape out!

But before we get into comics, Jerry and Victor went to watch the Dragon Ball Super Broly movie in theatres, and boy, it was sooo good! If you are a Dragon Ball fan then this is definitely not to be missed! If you are just a fan of action films, this will be right up your alley too! We’re extremely excited about the future of Dragon Ball Super, especially now that Broly is canon in the main universe.

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Kenya Gaturiri roasted by Kaito Coffee Roasters. From the get-go the beans already gave off a distinct and unique aroma and, upon brewing, that aroma absolutely accentuated. Join us as we discuss this unique coffee!

What did you think about this episode? Can you believe anything happening in Batman? Does the new reveals in Justice League intrigue you? Are you excited about the direction of Guardians of the Galaxy? Let us know what you think!

  • This week, Jerry and Victor sit down to discuss all things Gideon Falls #10, Batman Who Laughs #2, and Venom #10. A much quieter week in terms of our pull list for the show compared to the previous two weeks. But to be fair, those were catch up weeks from the holidays, so a quieter week is a welcome change. However, even if the number is smaller, still lots to talk about as we hit some critical moments in these stories!

But before we get into comics, Jerry talks about his new obsession with a certain anime while Victor continues to tear through Netflix movies. We then veer into another TV show and kind of get off track. And then we talk about a whole bunch of other things. Oh and more Dragon Ball stuff!

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Pangoa roasted by Propeller Coffee Co. Jerry seems to always have trouble with pronouncing the name. Perhaps Victor should take over on pronouncing and introducing the coffee.

What did you think about this episode? What did you think about the reveal in Gideon Falls? Do you agree with Batman Who Laughs and his description of Batman? How do you think Eddie Brock will get out of his situation in Venom? Let us know what you think!

  • We’re back! It’s 2019, and it’s our first official episode of the new year! Wooo! This is now officially (unofficially) Legacy episode 41! We would like to wish everyone a happy new year, and we hope you will enjoy what’s we’ve got in store for 2019. We got some big things planned for the podcast, so hopefully those would all come to fruition.

But before we get into comics, we both talk about what we’ve been doing over the holidays. There’s quite a bit of stuff, so it might be best to just leave that to the episode. We will say, it does get quite nerdy.

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called De Dios roasted by Drumroaster Coffee. From the first taste, we’ve got a good feeling about this one. Can this start our new year strong? Will this be the first time where we go 3/3 (or however many notes are in this coffee) on our guesses?!

What did you think about this episode? Do you like the current direction of Batman? How about Justice League? Do you agree with our analysis of Heroes in Crisis and Captain America? Let us know what you think!

But before we get into comics, Jerry continues to talk about Destiny 2 as he just can’t seem to get enough of the game, especially now that he has all the expansions! Victor makes up with Dokkan Battle as he dives right back into the Dragon Ball mobile game HOWEVER! Victor is cautiously optimistic about the direction of the game. We shall see!

We will be winding down the length of this segment moving forward, as we realized (and talked about in our December Previews bonus episode) that the content of this segment is very similar to the bonus episodes that we do monthly. Also, we end up talking about a lot of the same points that we would potential say the week after, and we didn’t want this to become too repetitive or redundant. So moving forward in future episodes, we will basically be naming off the books we will be covering the following week, and not really go into details. If you’d like to discuss the new books ahead of our episode releases, feel free to hit us up on Twitter or visit our Facebook page/group and we can get a conversation started!

  • Woooo! We're on episode 3 of our new bonus series, where we go through the Previews Catalog for each month as they come out. We hope you'll find our recommendation through this series useful in deciding what to put on your future pull-list. It is also our intention to see if we can find gems ahead of release and add them to our show for discussion as well.

We will be mainly looking at new series and #1s as these provide a perfect opportunity for us to include a new comic from the start, and it also helps to spread the word about brand new books as well.

  • Citizens of Dark Roast City! In this episode, we talk all about hope. Hope in different capacities, different situations. We explore this theme as we discuss Heroes in Crisis #3, Aquaman #42, Aquaman Justice League Drowned Earth #1, and Stranger Things #3

But before we get into comics, Jerry talks about his time playing Destiny 2. He’s been playing a lot of Destiny. This probably might be a recurring topic. Victor is very excited about Gogeta Blue showing up in Dragon Ball Super Broly movie. It's odd that they decided to spoil that already, but oh well. We're happy for it!

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is a mystery coffee roasted by Elysian Coffee Roasters. Upon first sniff, this coffee already promises to be amazing. Apparently we’re also tasked to guess the region that this coffee came from. So let’s see how we do!

But before we get into comics, we spend quite some time talking about Destiny 2, because the game is amazing, and you should all play it. Do you play Destiny 2 (on the pc)? Let us know! We should all play together. Jerry is very hooked.

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Las Brisas roasted by Propeller Coffee Co. We’re pretty excited for this as all the coffee we’ve received from Propeller has been very smooth. This could be another one of those super smooth weeks.

  • Greetings Dark Roast Citizens! In this episode, we get some answers but even more questions in Gideon Falls #8, ramp up in the arc finale in Captain America #5, get a deeper look into Eddie’s mind in Venom #8, and learn of some early family dynamics in God of War #1.

But before we get into comics, it was Jerry’s birthday over the past weekend! We’ll be talking more about what happened next week, and the cool Batman statue his friends got him. Aside from that though, we’ve just been addicted to playing Destiny 2, day in and day out!

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Blue Honey roasted by Luna Coffee. If you’ve been following the show at all, you would know that one of our favourite, if not the favourite, coffees we’ve had is the Lemon Tea Daydream roasted by Luna Coffee. We can’t wait to get a taste of this new Blue Honey coffee!

What did you think about this episode? Did you see the twists and turns coming in Gideon Falls? Did you enjoy the reveal in Captain America? What do you think of the Eddie and symbiote dynamic now? Let us know what you think!

In this segment, we go through the books that we’ll be covering the following week, to sort of give you a head start so you’ll know what to pick up for the show the following day! We realized that our episodes come out close to a week after the issues come out, and also comes out the day before NCBD! We wanted to make sure that you can hit up your local LCS and grab the issues we’ll be discussing the week after, and hopefully we can start a discussion on the Facebook group before the new episode airs!

On the next episode: Cold Spots #4, Batman #59, Justice League #12, Web of Venom: Carnage Born #1

  • Greetings Dark Roast Citizens! In this episode, we break things down and talk Blackbird #2, Batman #58, Green Lantern #1, and Justice League #11.

But before we get into comics, Jerry talks about how he’s been addicted to Destiny 2 ever since it became free on Battle.net (Blizzard app?). HOWEVER! It is free only until the November 18th! If you don’t claim the gift by then, it’s gone! Claim it, and it’s forever yours. Go do it now! But wait listen to this episode first then go do it.

The coffee we’ll be brewing this week is called Cafe El Arriero. It’s a coffee from cuba….and that’s all we know about it! Also it’s a dark roast, so it’s fitting!

What did you think about this episode? What do you think of the direction of Blackbird? Are you hyped for the future of Green Lantern? Let us know what you think!
