  • In this episode, the FAQ says that one of our followers does not fly much. She asked me, “What’s the best seat on the plane?”

    .

    Today’s Destination is: Marietta, GA

Today’s Misstep- On Southwest, I paid twice for the Internet.

Travel Advice: Get a good night’s sleep on the road with a clear head in bed.

FAQ: What’s the best seat on the plane? That was the question asked by someone who doesn’t fly much.

Response: I think the best seat is a window seat, but you may prefer the aisle if you want to stretch your legs and walk around the cabin.

On Southwest Airlines, there are no assigned seats, so you get the seat you want if you are one of the first to board.

I love looking out the window and feel I have more privacy with that view. I also have at least one elbow rest that I can use.

When I fly a budget airline, they ask me to buy a seat, but I rarely do that. They often seat me in the middle, but sometimes I get lucky.

    Today’s destination: Marietta, GA

I spent the day in Marrietta, GA, at the historic homes and cafe market by the old train station. Marietta Square is full of great local food stalls. I had a very fresh poke bowl.

The city has charm, touristy vibes, and a local flavor. People settle here because they like the small-town feel.

It’s north of Atlanta, about 46 kilometers or 29 miles.

You can take the MARTA from the airport and then transfer to Arts Center Station to bus, which will take you to the Marietta Transfer Center. Plenty of Airbnb and hotels will host you here.

If you have a car, drive to Kennesaw, about 10 minutes drive

Kennesaw, GA -special episode on this place?

Blue Pineapple Travel Agency, Nicole and Casey were hiking ahead of me, and I asked them if this trail leads back to the Visitor’s Center, and they said YES.

So I started walking and talking; before you knew it, we were old friends.

Today’s Misstep: I was working on Southwest Airlines and paid for the internet twice.

This was the first time that I used and paid for the internet. I used my Southwest Airlines mobile app to pay for it because it was convenient. I had trouble getting it, and a flight attendant helped me out. Then I told them I wanted to use my laptop for work, so I had to purchase a second time for that service. Each was only $8.00, and they offered me a refund when I asked for it. It should appear on next month’s credit card statement as a refund.

Today’s Travel Advice- Get a good night’s sleep on the road with a clear head in bed.

When your head hits the pillow, make sure your brain is relaxed. Wind down your screen time at least a half hour before, and take a minute to think about what you’re grateful for. That will give you a clear head and a good night’s sleep most of the time when you travel.

  • In this episode, the FAQ is: How do I keep track of travel memories so I don’t forget them?

Today’s Destination is: Venice, Italy Part 3

Today’s Misstep: Tickets to the Opera in Venice were sold out

Travel Advice: Stick to the outskirts for fewer tourists

FAQ: How do I keep track of travel memories so I don’t forget them?

Answer: Our memories may not be as sharp as we age, so recording our best thoughts in writing may be more critical. I use the Notes app on my phone, my audio recording app, and take lots of photos and videos while I travel. I do not post to social media while I travel, but wait until later most of the time to curate my memories in blogs and podcasts like this one.

How you record and save your memories is really up to you. Whatever your process is, make sure you have enough memory and battery and that you capture the essence of your travel, whether it’s a person you met, a place you want to return to, or a special meal you ate.

Today’s destination: Venice, Italy Part 3

To really enjoy Venice, Italy, as a tourist, you have to learn to get in synch with the city's vibe. It would be best if you had a lot of patience.

My experiences were as a solo female, and yours may differ depending on your adventure step. It’s a Step 5 destination.

If you visit Venice now, you will pay a daily fee. Show notes have more on this.

The highlights were on the water, where I spent almost all of my time.

    Patience.

Saint Elena and Saint Mary Elizabeth are at the end of line 1. I'm heading to the beach here for a swim. Swimming 🏊‍♂️ free was good. Private clubs charged 50 euros to swim. I had to walk a bit, but it was free. The water was pretty clear and refreshing.

I had breakfast with a German young man from Bonn. He will serve in the NY area this fall, but until then, he will tour Europe solo. He is a nice guy.

I took bus 3x in Lido ferries Saturday (6), to Murano, all over…

Sunday thru Grand Canal to Lido 1: then another to Lido SME. train 2x plus paid 1x 1.50 euro. I got good value for 24 hours.

I needed a shower after that beach swim in Lido Santa Maria Elizabeth. For the first time, my name was a neighborhood/church.

Prep for the rest of the trip. Figure out texting, airalo, bank.

This morning, bus #2 to Venice was packed and hot. The train now has AC, and that’s great!

Loved the ferries. Took them all day, often.

Met Matteo, who helped me find the train station. Nice and humble. Maybe 25 years old. Runs the ferry for tourists each day. It must be stressful at times.

Strikes are possible here. They are announced in advance.

Today’s Misstep: Tickets to the Opera in Venice were sold out

I thought I could get a ticket to the Opera on the day of, but that was wrong. Book your tickets in advance.

Today’s Travel Advice- Stick to the outskirts for fewer tourists

You don’t need to be amid the traffic, so arrive early, siesta mid-day, and relax with your shade umbrella in Venice. Cool down in advance.

  • The first Venice episode was # 247. I came back and added more to that here and the following episode.

In this episode, the FAQ is: Would I return to Venice?

Today’s Destination is Venice, Italy Part 2 of 3

Today’s Misstep: Spend more time in the region of Northern Italy.

Travel Advice: In Venice, Get Lost

FAQ: Would I go back to Venice?

Answer: The answer is yes because I hardly saw the main attractions the first time. I was in a crowd of tourists, and it was under construction. I think there will be better crowd control now that there's a fee.

Today’s destination: Venice, Italy Part 2 of 3

Venice is called the City of Dreams.

It’s the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region and is built on over 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals—including the Grand Canal thoroughfare—lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower, which offers views of the city’s red roofs.

Yes, Venice is sinking. This is due to sediment settling and freshwater pumping from below ground.

What are the main places to explore here?

Take the canals everywhere, because there are no cars.

So many corners. Away from glitter and gloss.

70,000 people live here. Tens of millions vacation here.

    https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/394/

Detours throughout the city due to construction.

Rialto Bridge is in the middle of the busy tourist activity.

If I had more time, I would have spent it in Venice. I only had four days, which got me more interested in being part of the city life. I’d go back outside of the summertime. I’d visit the historical sites and ride the vaporettas, trains, and buses. I’d also explore the area around Venice to learn about its history and meet the people.

  • Bucket List Episode:
The Garden Route of South Africa, by Rose Kilian

Hi there, I'm Rose Kilian, and I'm thrilled to share the magic of the Garden Route in South Africa, a place that has been my home and my heart. Growing up here was a dream, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and a rich tapestry of experiences. Whether you're planning a visit or just curious, I'm excited to take you on a journey through this enchanting region.

The Garden Route stretches along the southern coast of South Africa, from Knysna in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. This coastal corridor is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, pristine beaches, and charming towns. It's a paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those seeking a peaceful retreat.

We are starting our journey in Plettenberg Bay, or 'Plett' as the locals call it. Plett is known for its golden beaches, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. Visit Robberg Nature Reserve for breathtaking hiking trails and see seals and dolphins. The beaches here, like Lookout Beach and Keurbooms Beach, are best for unwinding and soaking in the sun.

Next, we head to Knysna, one of my absolute favorite spots. Nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, Knysna is famous for its lagoon and the iconic Knysna Heads. Take a cruise on the lagoon, visit the Knysna Elephant Park, or explore the lush Knysna Forest. The forest is magical, with ancient trees and the possibility of spotting the elusive Knysna Loerie bird.

Don’t overlook Sedgefield, a quieter town that’s perfect for relaxing. The Saturday Wild Oats Community Farmers' Market is a local favorite, offering fresh produce, homemade goods, and crafts. The surrounding lakes and beaches are serene and ideal for a peaceful retreat.

Wilderness is another gem along the Garden Route. This small town is surrounded by rivers, lakes, and forests, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing, and bird-watching. The Map of Africa viewpoint offers panoramic views of the landscape that resembles the continent of Africa, a sight you won’t want to miss.

Finally, George is the largest town on the Garden Route and an excellent base for exploring the region. It has a rich history, beautiful botanical gardens, and excellent golf courses. The Outeniqua Transport Museum is a fascinating stop for train enthusiasts.

For something a bit different, head inland to Oudtshoorn, the world's ostrich capital. The Cango Caves, with their impressive limestone formations, are another highlight. These caves are among the largest in Africa and offer guided tours through their vast chambers.

The Garden Route is not just a destination; it's an experience that stays with you. There's something for everyone, from its diverse landscapes to its vibrant communities. Whether hiking through ancient forests, lounging on pristine beaches, or savoring local cuisine, the Garden Route offers endless adventures and memories.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope you can visit and create your own unforgettable experiences in this beautiful part of the world. Safe travels, and enjoy every moment in the Garden Route of South Africa!

  • This is Bucket List Travel, a special series within the podcast Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide.

This is Carolyn Ray, CEO and editor of JourneyWoman, a women's solo travel publication based in Toronto. I'm going to share some tips and advice about my hometown with you. I'm actually a sixth-generation Torontonian, and my daughter is a seventh-generation Torontonian.

So this is my hometown, and I can tell you, if you're looking for an exciting, vibrant city, Toronto is it. We are, you might be surprised, the fourth largest city in North America, and very easy to get to from just about anywhere in the world. Toronto is a great getaway for those living in Canada and a steal for women coming from other countries because of our Canadian dollar. So you'll find a lot of value coming here for your money,

I want to share with you a bit about how to get to Toronto, which may surprise you. Of course, you may know about Toronto Pearson Airport, our international airport, but we also have a smaller island airport called the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is right downtown. So if you can get a flight into Toronto Island, that's much easier.

But if you are flying into Toronto, Pearson, we have a wonderful train called the UP Express, which will get you downtown in about 25 minutes. If you are arriving at Union Station, you can get right on our subway system, the TTC, the Toronto Transit Commission. And it's very, very easy to get around on the TTC. It's a U-shaped route that goes north, just kind of starts at Union Station, and goes up both ways. And then there's an east, west route across the city at Bloor Street, which is B, L, O, O, R, we're building some more subways. You'll notice that when you're in town, and because of that, I just want to speak to a little bit about safety on the subways. Toronto is a very large city, and I just want to encourage you to be very aware. I know everyone thinks Canadians are very nice, but I also just want to remind you to be very self-aware when you're on the subways and on public transit.

For things to do in Toronto, my number one experience would be to go to Toronto Island. It's very easy to get there on a ferry, and you can take a ferry over for the day. You can ride a bike, enjoy the beaches, or even get on a boat.

If you are looking for a place to stay, there are many different kinds of hotels in Toronto, but I will say one of my favorites is the Fairmont Royal York, which is right across from Union Station. But I also like some of our boutique hotels, the Gladstone, the Drake, the Broadview Hotel. These are very lovely, locally owned hotels, creative, artsy, with really great rooftop restaurants and great views.

I'll end with some tips on places to eat that you may not know about. I really love Spanish food, so I wanted to recommend Madrina y tapas and Patria. Patria is on King West, which is a very popular place to go for bars and restaurants. The Distillery District is one of our historic areas in Toronto, it’s a wonderful place to walk around and spend the day. And Madrina y tapas is one of my favorite restaurants there. There's also Yorkville, which is on at Bloor and Yonge Street. Kasa Moto is a Japanese restaurant that I would suggest there. And a secret you may not have heard of, this one is called Scaramouche, and it's a little bit farther north, but you can get wonderful views of the entire city. It's actually in a condominium, and you can see all of Toronto at night. It's lovely. And for those of us who like vegetarian food, it's Planta. There are two Planta locations in Toronto, maybe more now, great vegetarian menu. And of course, I must mention the St Lawrence Market, which has all, you know, all of the fresh food you could ever want. But also in the basement Manotas, which is a Spanish takeaway restaurant, and then also Busters, which is at the back of the St Lawrence Market, where you can get some wonderful seafood.

Whatever you're doing in Toronto, I hope you have a great time. There's so much to do. There's so much to see, and I look forward to seeing you there. And if there's more information need about Toronto, please visit JourneyWoman.com. We've got lots of articles about the city.

Thank you, Carolyn Ray and Journey Woman for this excellent episode. I love that you shared about Toronto on this one!

  • Welcome to the Special Bucket List Travel Series of Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide.

Patti Christensen from San Diego talks about one of her favorite travel destinations, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Copenhagen, like much of Denmark is a city on the water. One of the first things you want to do when you go to Copenhagen is go on one of the sightseeing Canal boat tours with a live guide. You hop on this great open-air boat and slowly experience various city views. Copenhagen combines brand new shiny buildings and historic buildings going back centuries. The boat trip past the multicolored buildings is fantastic, with photo-worthy sites all along the route. And as long as you’re in that area, you might join the locals in a dip in the swimming beaches in the harbor. I found the water extremely cold, but the docks and the beaches were full of sun-worshiping people enjoying themselves.

There are also so many wonderful and free museums and historic sites to see. Among my favorites is Rosenborg Castle, where you can see the Danish Crown jewels. There are also several other palaces and historic sites. At Amalienborg Palace in downtown Copenhagen, you can watch the changing of the guards every day at noon. It's very similar to that in London but with fewer crowds.

Another must-see in Copenhagen is Tivoli Gardens. This was the world’s original amusement park; they say that Walt Disney got some inspiration from Tivoli Gardens. It combines beautiful flowers and landscaping, kids see buildings and children shows, and wonderful restaurants. Throughout the summer, great concerts are going on. One must make a trip to Tivoli Garden and eat some beautiful food.

One of the things you’ll notice in Denmark is everybody rides bikes. if you get a chance, rent a bike and tool around. The city is very flat and rideable. You’ll see whole families riding bikes, kids riding bikes to school, and adults using bikes to commute. You have to ride a bike in Copenhagen.

There are many places that have great street food, especially at the Reffen Copenhagen Street Food market. This is the largest street food market in all of the Nordic regions. It includes reasonably priced food from around the world. Copenhagen is definitely a melting pot. The most famous sausage eaten in Denmark is a medisterpolse, spicy and delicious.

One more thing that you could really enjoy if you happen to be in Copenhagen in July is the Copenhagen jazz festival. The Danes love their jazz, which goes back to the 1930s and 40s when American jazz artists traveled extensively in Europe. The jazz festival, started in 1979, is a month-long festival at small venues, large concert halls and churches, and really big outdoor stages. Many of the events are free and the music is fantastic.

And of course you have to go and at least have a glimpse of the Little Mermaids statue. This comes from Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale about a mermaid. When you see the little mermaid, you might be surprised at its size. My local cousin said, “Nobody ever called the big mermaid”. But getting your picture taken by the statue is one of the experiences you should have at least once.

Thank you, Patti Christensen for that great episode.

My new Servas friend Rossana has lived in the Vomero neighborhood for 20 years.

Here’s some more background. The third-largest city in Italy is full of history, art, architecture, and delicious food, yet it gets a bad rap for its crime and grime. While these blemishes are a reality for residents, they're far from ubiquitous, especially where tourism concerns them. Find higher ground at places like Certosa e Museo di San Martino, and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views. Stroll the Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli as I did for a full day, or chat with friendly locals like Rossana, and you'll experience some of the magic this port city holds. And, of course, you can't forget the joy that comes from that first bite of Neapolitan pizza (in the city credited with inventing the pizza), nor that perfect gelato.

The Art Stations, distributed along Metro lines 1 and 6, include more than 180 pieces of art created by 90 international authors and local architects, allowing them to combine different architectural styles. Mappatella Beach is where I went swimming along the coast.

In previous podcasts, I mentioned how to use Chat GPT for travel. If you’re not using it, you could miss out on some great hidden gems for your travel. I bet your tour guides use this tool to learn some secrets and factoids for their upcoming tours. So why keep yourself in the dark? Use Perplexity or whatever AI program you like best, and explore before you leave home. However, do check the responses for hallucinations.

Today’s Misstep- Narrow sidewalks and missing street name signage in Florence

Travel Advice: Airfares are climbing in price, so beware of sticker shock.

FAQ: What should I do about travel insurance?

I don’t have any financial affiliations with travel insurance companies, but I would follow some best practices. It’s not too late to add them if you need them. I have health insurance worldwide, and my credit card may cover additional travel items.

Solo travelers should care about this.

  • Florence, Italy Part 1

Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest’s 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide

The FAQ is: My friend Jean asked about recommendations for the best rental car deals.

Today’s Destination is Florence, Italy. Part 1

Today’s Misstep- Legal troubles: I was caught in Florence without a bus ticket and fined 42.5 euros.

Travel Advice: Bring an umbrella for shade

FAQ: My friend Jean asked for recommendations for the best rental car deals this year. She says it used to cost more if you picked it up at the airport, but now it’s the opposite.

She’s asking for the best deals, whether AAA, Sam’s Club, Expedia, Kayak, Booking, etc. They all seem extra high to her.

Answer: Yes, the car rental business is doing well these days. I remember when, during COVID-19, I booked a car in Denver for eight days for $32. No longer is that the case. My best thing is to shop around and keep shopping. Finding your best deal may take a few or even 30 minutes, but it’s worth waiting. I have used all the options mentioned here, plus Turo, which is like Airbnb for cars. They all have plusses but check to ensure you have the car you need a few days before you travel. I just checked with my Turo for next weekend in Ohio, and the host says the car was in an accident, so it’s unavailable, but Turo did not inform me. So, I contacted Turo, and they helped me re-book a different car. Expect prices to be high in peak times like summer and holidays and destinations like Chicago. Consider cutting the number of days you're renting your car, so only for the days you need it, and use public transportation, Uber/Lyft, or walking on the other days if possible.

  • In this episode, the FAQ is: How can I travel solo while in a “group”?

    Today’s Destination is: Sedona, AZ

Today’s Mistake- I bought the wrong ticket online

Travel Advice: Gas up when half full.

FAQ: How can I travel solo while still in a “group”?

Answer: Before or after your group trip, plan some solo time, for just you. That way, when you do get to the arranged activities, you will be ready and prepared. Some people like to warm up by going with just one friend, before they join the group. That’s ok, too.

After your group tour, you may want to spend a few days in the same region to explore other options and see things that were left off the tour. Tourguides generally only show you the best parts of the region. To really experience it, you need some solo trip time, too.

    Today’s destination: Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona, and the Verde Valley area are 1200 square miles big and are a traveler’s delight. It’s like an oasis in the desert, but lifelike and real. It’s known for spirituality, wellness, and red rocks.

Sedona’s magic goes back to history and legend. It may have been linked to early Aztec or Mayan occupation thousands of years ago. The earliest native artifacts—such as pottery and weavings—found in the area date back to as early as the 7th century. Later, tribes were present, including the Hopi, Navajo, and (YA—VA Pie) Yavapai.

Cliff houses are worth exploring such as Sedona’s (pal at kI) Palatki Heritage Site or nearby Montezuma Castle. Way back in the 16th century, the Spanish called the local in-dig in us) Indigenous people Sinagua, which means without water. Sedona is named after the wife of TC Schnebly, the founder in modern days of the area.

Today’s Travel Advice-Gas up when half full

Check the gas gauge when you get in the car. Make sure you have enough. It’s best to fill up early in the day if you can. I try to fill up whenever I am halfway full.

Gas prices have been dropping lately. Use the GasBuddy app or similar method of finding the cheapest gas in your neigbhorhood.

  • In this episode: FAQ is: I get lost all the time, so how can I travel without getting frustrated and upset? I want to have fun and not fear making a mistake.

    Today’s Destination is: Bremerton, WA

Today’s Mistake- Mixing up my cities in Washington State

Travel Advice: Stuck in your planning?

FAQ: I always get lost, so how can I travel without getting frustrated and upset? I want to have fun and not fear making a mistake.

Answer: Like you, I get lost all the time. I’ve got a terrible sense of direction. How bad? If I leave a hotel room, I usually walk the wrong way out the door, which tells me I am not noticing the direction when I should.

What is a sense of direction? According to the dictionary, a Sense of direction is knowing one's location and performing wayfinding. It is related to cognitive maps, spatial awareness, and spatial cognition.

Given that, I’ve still traveled around the world solo and can help you deal with this issue. My personal experience is as a teacher. I admit my faults and weaknesses but don’t let them get the best of me. I make the same number of errors but don’t get distracted or upset.

I will try to be more self-aware of direction, and in the meantime, you can do the same with me.

    Today’s destination: Bremerton, WA

I spent Easter vacation near this area, and it was beautiful. It was chilly compared to San Diego, but it was sunny, and it felt crisp to be hiking and enjoying the outdoors air.

You will likely come from the Seattle airport, about a 90-minute drive, or you can take a ferry. Ferries are popular ways to get around the area, and I took a Fast Commuter Ferry from Port Orchard to Bremerton. Let’s back up a minute here.

From SeaTac, you can also take the Kitsak bus to Bremerton. It makes several local stops along the way, but it’s frequent, and you don’t need a reservation from the airport. Just pay the driver and jump on the bus. If you rent a car, consider the traffic you will face in Seattle and be patient.

Either way, look at the maps and the ferry routes as you navigate the area. You will discover a lot of water, islands, and sound here.

Bremerton sits on the Kitsap Peninsula, overlooking the Puget Sound. It’s a city with strong links to Seattle, well-known for its charming neighborhood restaurants and coffee shops, beautiful parks, and fascinating naval museums. You'll find plenty to do to pass the time in Bremerton, WA, with visitors of all ages able to enjoy the city’s scenic nature trails and family-friendly eateries. The top 6 things to see are?

    1. USS Turner Joy Museum Ship

    2. Puget Sound Navy Museum

    3. Manette Bridge

    4. Illahee State Park

    5. Kitsap Forest Theater

    6. Purple Scent Lavender Farm

I had a great dinner while walking around the downtown areas, observing the influence of Quincy Jones and the music scene. I could also see the snow-capped mountains in the distance, which was a beautiful and peaceful vision. In the spring, look for lilacs, daffodils, tulips, and other blooming beauties.

If you are looking for some off-the-beaten-track places, check out Ollala. There is a winery and cidery here. You can see the history of a sanitarium, where a murder happened by starvation. You can go clamming here with a day license. I met Gregg Olsen, the author of several books and a clam expert. Another touristy town is Manchester, but you will miss it if you sneeze. Manchester State Park has some great hikes with military mines, which you can observe. There are barbeques, shelters, and hiking trails here.

Today’s Mistake- Mixing up my cities in Washington State

I was mixing up my B-cities in the Seattle area. I was confused about Bremerton and Bellingham. I’ve now been to both cities, and they are very different. Sometimes, you need to be there in person to get a feel for and understand what the city is all about. You’ve heard about Bremerton here. Let me know if you want to learn more about Bellingham, and I will do a podcast about that, too.

Today’s Travel Advice-Stuck in your planning?

The planning can be just as much fun as the trip itself. Are you stuck in your travel planning? My team is working on a new helpful tool to make your planning more of an adventure and tangible experience instead of a drudge. It’s a workbook that my daughter, Tina, and I have been discussing for two years. Let us know what you want to see in a workbook for solo travel. • Today’s Destination: Chickamauga National Park: Part 2 of Chattanooga episode.

Today’s Misstep- Driving over hills, a tire came at us

Travel Advice: What exercises should I do when I travel?

FAQ: What do you wish you knew before booking your flight?

Response: A few more questions you can ask someone before you plan your trip are:

Did you experience any frustrations related to the destination or the actual traveling?

If so, what should people be aware of to avoid those frustrations, hopefully?

What websites or services were the most helpful for planning/booking your trip?

What advice would you give someone going there for the first time?

What was the most enjoyable or relaxing part of your trip?

Today’s destination: Chickamauga National Park Part 2 of the Chattanooga series

It’s officially called Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park near Lookout Mountain. Use your National Park Pass for free entry.

    http://cityofchickamauga.org/

When I first visited Point Park, I explored this area on the border of Georgia and Tennessee for about an hour. It’s across from the visitor center and was built by the Army Corps of Engineers.

You can see artillery from the Confederate fighting.

The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863, marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia called the Chickamauga Campaign. The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. It involved the second-highest number of casualties in the war, following the Battle of Gettysburg. It was the first major battle of the war in Georgia.

The battle was fought between the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia (and ultimately flows into the Tennessee River about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of downtown Chattanooga)

There is also a monument to peace, The New York Peace Monument, symbolizing reunification and reconciliation.

    http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-chickamaugabattlefield.asp

Look for marble and pink granite materials. Visit the museum at Ochs Memorial Observatory for views of the Chattanooga area from the terrace. You can continue hiking the trails to other scenic views from Lookout Mountain. I first visited this area on a bus trip with my high school friends in the 1970s, and this was my first visit to return.

I drove the two hours from Atlanta through some small towns and highways and finally to some neighborhoods and scenic drives. When you get to the neighborhood, you will drive on windy roads that take your breath away.

This is a Step 1 or Step 2 destination and easy to explore independently. There is also a cute Visitor Center with restrooms and a small museum. The awe-inspiring view from Lookout Mountain Battlefield over Point Park shows a bird' s-eye view of the Tennessee River and how it bends, a bit like a foot at the ankle. You see the city of Chattanooga from above when you go around the bend. You can even see the three bridges that cross the river to the town.

The battlefield here was memorable, and you can follow the signs for the Chickamauga Battlefield Tour. Or you can just enjoy walking the grounds around the peace monument and listening to the birds chirping. It’s an excellent way to enjoy your day in Georgia or Tennessee.

    http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-trainmuseum.asp

Today’s Misstep- Driving on the road over hills, a tire came rolling at us and hit our car.

You’re generally safe from tires in a car, but this tire stopped us. We hit the tire and could not drive any further. We got a tow truck to bring the car home, about 200 miles away. It was an expensive tow, and I hope you don’t have that experience.

Today’s Travel Advice- What exercises should I do when I travel?

Try to stay as active as you are when home, which means you should try to maintain the same levels of activities, even if you are on the road a lot. You may need to take frequent breaks in your drive to stretch, walk a bit, and even do more intensive exercise. Stretch every two hours on a plane or train. I try to find a pool where I can swim anytime I travel. I am a member of the YMCA, where I can go anytime. There are more than 2700 YMCAs in the USA and also in 120 countries around the world. That’s how we both can keep our exercise routines when we travel.

  • In this episode, the FAQ is: How can I take a walking tour when I arrive in a city?

    .

    Today’s Destination is: Chattanooga, Tennessee

Today’s Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security

Travel Advice: Plan for the unexpected

FAQ: How can I get the walking tour when I get to a city?

Response: A guided walking tour of a city is a treat for a solo traveler, especially for a woman who is interested in its history.

The more popular ones are through platforms like Viator, TripAdvisor, Airbnb, and FreeWalkingtoursbylocals.com, but there are many ways to score a tour from someone who truly cares about the experience for you.

Be sure to read the reviews and book in advance during a busy season. Some are free, and suggest a tip at the end if you liked it. Your hotel could also gook you a tour. The Visitor Center or Tourism office can also give you guidance on this. You may also find a walking tour app for a self-guided tour, with maps and points of interest. You can GPS my city or check Detour. I found some walking tours on YouTube that were pretty fun to watch also.

    https://freewalkingtoursbylocals.com/

    Today’s destination: Chattanooga, Tennessee

My first visit here was in 1974, on a bus of young women heading to Florida. It was called Junior Trip. We were 80 women, two bus loads. I remember very little about Chattanooga from that visit.

I returned to see it in 2024, which made a more significant impression. This time, I was visiting the future Dr. Travelbest, who lives there now. We are currently working on a Planner for travel guidance, so look for that in the future.

It’s a central travel hub, especially for the railroads. A bridge crosses the railroad tracks, which are dozens of tracks wide. It may be one of the largest railroad hubs that I have experienced. You can see the city and the Moccasin Bend from the infamous Lookout Mountain.

Listen to the episode on Chickamauga to learn about President Abraham Lincoln's campaign to gain control of the South in the 1860s. It was a place of both Confederate and Union victories.

    https://www.visitchattanooga.com/things-to-do/

    https://www.visitchattanooga.com/plan/transportation/

The Zoo was a highlight, with a giraffe named George gladly accepting lunch from my hands to his 18-inch tongue. It seems that George loves romaine lettuce. Who would have guessed that? That experience was a treat. Kids like it, too. An assortment of other animals makes for a few hours of seeing wildlife at the Chattanooga Zoo.

Walk across the Pedestrian Bridge and the riverfront along the Tennessee River to get a flavor of the city. I walked the bridge at night, and it was a sparkling river with no watercraft because the weather was rainy and threatened winds. The Northshore District

has trendy boutiques, galleries, and food choices; you can walk everywhere. You can also learn much about the Civil War from an organized guided walking tour of the area.

I did get to see the historic train station, the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Parts of the terminal building were recently sold, so check the show notes for the latest.

    https://www.local3news.com/local-news/preserve-chattanooga-sells-part-of-chattanooga-choo-choo-complex/article_a8d7781e-dbe5-11ee-abba-0b98f22b8f70.html

I also enjoyed Ruby Falls and will create a special episode about that destination soon.

On my next visit, I plan to Explore the Tennessee Aquarium and dive into the fascinating world of marine life at one of the top-rated aquariums in the country. From river otters to penguins, the Tennessee Aquarium showcases various aquatic animals.

I did a few hikes on this trip, but most of the days, it rained, so I will return and hike more. Chattanooga is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking on nearby trails like Stringers Ridge or Raccoon Mountain or try rock climbing at the Tennessee Wall, if you have that talent, or just go and watch the climbers.

Next time I come, I may also Attend a Performance at the Tivoli Theatre: Catch a show at the beautifully restored Tivoli Theatre, which hosts concerts, Broadway shows, and ballets.

My last item on the next time list is to Relax at Coolidge Park: Spend a leisurely afternoon at Coolidge Park, located along the riverfront. Picnic in the grass, ride the antique carousel, or simply enjoy the scenic views.

Today’s Misstep- Getting stopped by TSA security

How did I know that carrying a squash in my bag would keep me from getting through security the first time? It took an extra five minutes to get my bag checked. And then I did it again. I brought a squash on a second trip, and TSA stopped me for a short while Next time, don’t bring fresh squash on the trip in your carry on.

Today’s Travel Advice- Plan for the unexpected.

There’s no such thing as being fully prepared, so prepare for what could happen, and in your mind how you may deal with that.
