Kate says she retreats when she feels overwhelmed, and sometimes feels like everyone copes better than her. • It is Friday therapy with Deli and Kate today, they chat about the wind that Melbourne and Victoria have had over the last week. Kate visits a shopping centre she hasn't been to since she was 18, and that brings up some memories, but what they are actually here for is to talk about "taking up space!" How do we take up space? Kate has too many questions, Deli has great answers as always.

The book Deli mentions is People Skills by Robert Bolton.

We talk mid-life crisis, learning to ask for what we want, and they even talk about Christmas!

  • This week on the podcast we talk about Fathers Day, so often the "big days" are full of emotion and loneliness, joy, disappointment, saddness, laughter or maybe all of that! These days are tricky for lots of us, and amazing for others of us. Today Garry and Kate talk about Fathers Day, and Kate listens to Garry talk about it from a dad's point of view. Garry has two adult children and explores with us what becoming a dad means to him. Garry talks about how hard it is to be a vulnerable around other men. Kate learns lots of things and of course adds some of her own thoughts in.

  • Friday therapy is back, and today we talk about how to make yourself feel "better". Kate talks about her dislike of self-care or the word self-care. But Deli talks about great ways to help yourself feel better, that are not self-care! How do we find support. Deli talks about making a list in the good times to use in the not so good times. Plus lots of other good tips! Deli talks about why we go into siege mentality or shock. Oh and the dog barks!

  • Today, Kate and Deli talk about what happens when you are mis- characterised, which can cause, we think, intense loneliness. What happens when you get bullied, or excluded, or people think things of you that are not true? How do you deal with that? What happens to your self-esteem? What happens when you fall out with someone you love, and you feel they misjudged you? How do you "re-group" after being attacked, or ostracised? How do you feel when you hear that people have been gossiping about you?

The importance of having someone on your side and to be beside you when you feel vulnerable. How do we feel ok with who we are when others seem not to be ok with us? Deli as usual has lots of wisdom for Kate's constant questions. How do we set up boundaries? What happens when we have different values to our loved ones?

  • Today, Deli and Kate are back with their final in the grief trilogy, but before they get into that they talk about Deli's latest hard rubbish rescue, and being creative or in Kate's case making her home "cute."

Today the gals talk about how hard it can be to downsize or, de clutter and dive into the reasons why it is hard. Why "things" are important and why they sometimes they are not just "things" . Deli of course has ideas and wisdom.

  • Today, Kate chats with a high school friend, Carl. Carl talks about connection and belonging as a high school band kid, and then the loneliness of leaving the band and heading home. They reminisce about high school and how they struggled to find their identity. They talk long and hard about the connectivity of music and concerts. They bonded over A-Ha as kids and today Ball Park Music as adults, and continue to bond over music and the connection it can bring.

Carl talks about loneliness being a measure of unkept expectations. He has learnt to expect less, and it has made him happier. They are two very curious humans and talk about curiosity and learning and examining why things make you feel the way they do. How you can be proud of loneliness. The pressure of the big days like Christmas, or Mother's Day and how we can create our own loneliness sometimes by thinking things have "to be" a special way or the way they always were.

Woven in and out of the chatting, Carl answers the lonely pod questions with refreshing honesty. We hope you enjoy!

  • Hi friends, it is time for Friday Therapy again and Deli and Kate talk about the shudder of receiving a compliment, the way we "hate ourselves" and why?! They chat parental expectations, parental identity and developing a sense of self as a child (or adult). They go deep and talk false sense and true self, and even the birth of our true self as adults. How often do we integrate ourselves and reflect on who we are?

They talk about losing friends after big life events, and sometimes re-finding them. How friends can be just as important as family. How we sometimes "over talk" trauma or a big life event, but hopefully we metabolise it ...

They go off-topic and back on again ...

  • Today on the podcast, Kate gets interviewed by Garry. He turns the tables and asks her the lonely questions. As always, he is so easy to listen too, and we think it's a lovely chat.

Kate recommends My Therapist Ghosted Me and Shagged Married Annoyed, The Handsome Pod, and of course Mamamia outloud, when Garry asks her what her fave pods are.

  • It's Friday therapy again, and Deli and Kate are back with some therapy for you. They talk about recording in the pod laundry while the cat eats their lunch, and the conversation rolls on from there. They talked about active listening, deep listening and just listening in general. They talk about "not being heard" and not being validated, ego ... and Deli talks about Cahot again. They chat validation, praise and even kids sports ... as per normal they go "off track" again. And they get back on track, mostly.

  • Today it is the two K's chatting, Kelly and Kate. Kelly has a great definition of what lonely means to her, she talks about the loneliness that comes from being a solo business owner, how loneliness is a little companion that hangs around in the background, and sometimes it sleeps on the couch and drinks all the milk. Kelly talks about learning it is ok to realise that not everyone will be your people! Kelly talks about music, listening and playing and the emotions that both of those things brings up.

  • Welcome to Friday Therapy. Deli and Kate chat about their week, people smoking at pubs, and feeling old! This week we chat a little more about our Tuesday ep which was all about anger. Kate talks about feeling guilty about feeling angry (there is always something, isn't there?;) Deli talks about a "compound fusion" where anger and guilt have for some reason become fused. Maybe this stuff is even from our childhoods. Give it a listen and see what you think. If you have any questions or comments, you can send us a speak pipe on Kate's website.

  • Today on Honestly I'm Angry we discuss another feeling ... Anger. Don't worry, there will be lonely chats again next week, but every so often we will cover some other feelings! This week it is Anger. Kate talks about her previously long held belief that "all anger is bad". Deli unpacks the roots of anger and tells us that anger can be good, and it is definitely not all bad!

They talk about the way we are raised, our values and our ideas on anger and hate.

What does anger mean to you? Is anger a behaviour? Do we even know how to deal with our anger? Deli says anger is a spectrum from feeling miffed to rage. They chat about how we were never taught to deal with our anger or how to grow with it! They talk about socialisation around gender, and go deep! Kate goes on lots of tangents and asks lots of questions, Deli patiently answers ;)

They talk about how to find out why we do things or think things, especially when it's almost unconscious in us. Where does fear sit in all of this?

Is it ok to be angry about things that are not fair? How do we "discharge" anger? How do we have anger control? Deli introduces rupture and repair.

It is an interesting discussion, we hope you get something out of it.

  • Kate and Deli chat all things Winter Solstice, Renovation Australia on abc i view, and surviving a cold snap by binge-watching TV under the doona. They do a deep dive into can a relationship survive when you take the common things you share out of a relationship? Like when Kate left the church? Deli has her answers, of course.

They talk about "Who gets the friends when a couple breaks up?" "Does everyone take a side when a couple break up?" They discuss what it is like when you break up a long term relationship and people outside the relationship struggle. They go deep, people. And talk about digging deep within ourselves, even when it feels like there is no way of digging.

Deli and Kate chat for longer than the 30 minutes Kate said these episodes would be, but hey ... it was a good chat.

  • Today, Kate talks to her brother Aran. Aran who wrote the theme music for this podcast, he is breathtakingly honest about his loneliness, loneliness from moving to a country town, his marriage ending, even how he felt in primary school when he moved to a different country town as a child and didn't fit in. He has dipped in and out of being lonely over his life, as have most of us. He has really thought about the answers to his questions, and we think you are going to really lean in to his story.

The different loneliness of leaving a relationship, even when it is the best thing for you, it is still lonely ... Kate and Aran talk about "who gets the friends?" when a long term relationship ends, and how "everyone takes a side if you are honest". And they ask themselves if there is still a "stigma" still that comes with divorce?

They talk about the loneliness of being in a long term relationship that is not a connected relationship, and how achingly hard that is. He reflects on the times he felt connected to community and family and times he didn't.

They discuss if you can be in a relationship without a common purpose, like footy or religion?

The big emotions that come with relationships being severed, and how horrid it makes you feel.

He has some good ways to combat loneliness, and how to create a sense of community around yourself.

The App Aran talks about is How We Feel.

  • Welcome back to Friday Therapy, where Deli and Kate unpack "water finding it's on level" which Kate says is beautiful and not so beautiful. They chat about finding connection with friends when you are living under financial stress. How do you cope with not being able to do "fun stuff" with your friends when it costs money? How everything that makes you feel 'othered' also makes you feel lonely. And how loneliness is perhaps one of the great levellers in life, because we all have a lonely story. And can discharge be a good thing?

  • Kate chats with Briohny on today's episode. Briohny is the first in person guest in the pod laundry studio, and she talks about growing up with a sense of loneliness and how it has formed who she is. Bri is a legendary single mum, and she talks about the loneliness that can come from that. She is honest about the financial implications of the cost of living crises that can make you lonely. She also thinks loneliness has made her self-aware, given her empathy and believes she can do anything! The power of being happy to be alone and enjoying your own company. Kate and Briohny have a 2164 day snap chat streak and talk about how that has made them feel less lonely. As usual she answers the lonely podcast questions.
