Ian Balding is a Cape Fear surfer, shaper, carpenter, craftsman, captain who has been designing surfboards, paddle boards, bateaus, GoPro Mounts and basically anything that floats and rides waves for many years. He still works by himself in his backyard kwanza hut when he's not providing epic excursions and buorgie adventures on and around the barrier islands of southeastern NC. Working far outside the scope of a typical backyard shaper, Ian has worked on some really cool projects with some really cool people. I was stoked to finally catch up with him after a fun surf at our local beach. www.facebook.com/ianbaldingcustoms Music: Mike Blair and the Stonewalls "Sleepin' Sundays" https://mikeblairandthestonewalls.bandcamp.com/music

I hope you enjoy a very colorful and fun conversation with this drummer turned shaper...

In the mid 2000's I was introduced to Uncle Mike from Oceanside, CA through my good friend Denis Weiler up in NJ. UM surfboards were widespread at one point, but both he and Denis disappeared from the surfing world...until just a couple of months ago that is! I was delighted to see the return of Uncle Mike via Instagram and get both he and Denis on to tell the tale.

Growing up on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina I was fortunate enough to live right next door to one of the best most legendary underground east coast shapers. Scott Busbey (In The Eye Surfboards) has been hand crafting surfboards since the 70's out of his backyard shed behind Natural Art Surf Shop in Buxton. He custom built my boards from a young age and then later taught me the art of shaping...
