Welcome to the Kiwi Kids Book Chat with school librarians Penny Walch and Julie Huggins.
This week we delve into the work of the legend that is Des Hunt. His work is, for the most part, firmly located in Aotearoa and the books always spotlight NZ flora and fauna. There is generally a theme of good vs bad and they are always a good, rollicking read!

This week we feature the narrative non-fiction titles by David Hill and Phoebe Morris, which we love. Whilst they have been in circulation for a few years now we feel they are never more relevant as the ANZHC kicks into gear. Not to mention the important messaging around being courageous... however that may look.
We continue to work on our sound quality - bear with!

Welcome to the Kiwi Kids Book Chat with school librarians Penny Walch and Julie Huggins.
We love this episode where we interview three of our Year 8 boys from last year about their love of Manga.
Whilst this is a Kiwi Kids Book Chat (the emphasis being on Kiwi Books) we couldn't pass up the opportunity at the end of 2023 to talk to three Kiwi Kids about their passion for Manga.
So whilst none of the books mentioned are authored by kiwis, it is most certainly a nod to the fact that manga is exploding in popularity in NZ...
Manga series mentioned in the episode:
For younger readers:
Yokai Watch
Pokemon
The boys also mentioned 'gag' manga as being suitable for younger readers. Some may well be, but certainly not all!
Suitable for intermediate readers:
One Piece
Naruto
Fairy Tail
My Hero Academia
Spy X Family
Death Note
Bakuman - Manga about Manga
For older readers:Bleach - the boys talk about this and Common Sense Media is a bit conflicted as to the age appropriateness of the anime tv series, ranging from 8+ to 16+ so we shall err on the side of caution...

Well we are back into it! This episode took about three attempts and it still isn't perfect!! But if we aim for perfection, nothing is ever going to happen - so here it is in all it's imperfect glory. We haven't really got on top of the sound quality, and for that we apologise, but there are lots of great suggestions of ANZAC books to investigate.
This week's episode makes mention of the following books:
The Water Bottle by Phillipa Werry
Anzac Day Parade by Glenda Kane
My Name is Henry Fanshaw by Gillian Torckler
The Anzac Billy by Claire Saxby
Anzac Sons by Allison Paterson
The Red Poppy by David Hill and Fifi Colston
Torty and the Soldier by Jennifer Beck & Fifi Colston
Anzac Heroes & Anzac Animals by Maria Gill & Marco Ivancic
Bobby the Littlest War Hero by Glyn Harper & Jenny Cooper
Le Quesnoy by Glyn Harper & Jenny Cooper
This Is Where I Stand by Philippa Werry & Kieran Rhynhart
The Bantam and the Soldier by Jennifer Beck & Robyn Belton
Jim's Letters by Glyn Harper and Jenny Cooper
The ANZAC Puppy by Peter Millett & Trish Bowles
Flight Path by David Hill
Enemy Camp by David Hill
My Brother's War by David Hill
1914 - Riding into War by Susan Brocker
1915 - Wounds of War by Diana Menefy
1916 - Dig For Victory by David Hair
1917 - Machines of War by Brian Falkner
1918 - Broken Poppies by Des Hunt

After a 2 year hiatus, the reason for which is explained within, Teacher-Librarians Julie Huggins and Penny Walch are relaunching their podcast which aims to highlights books by kiwi authors, as well as books which are being read by kiwi kids.
The technical side of things is NOT their forte, so do please excuse some of the ghostly voices...
... and for some bizarre reason, known only to some higher force, Julie and Penny refer to each other as Mrs Huggins and Mrs Walch in this episode, which makes them sound quite Dickensian.
