Most false confessors sign their statements to simply escape the pressure of the interrogation room, trusting that the evidence will prove them innocent. But there is an even more disturbing form of false confession: after hours of psychological manipulation and destabilization, some innocent suspects begin to believe they may actually be guilty. This is part 5 of False Confessions, a six-part miniseries.

No one thinks it can happen to them, until it does. There are many factors, such as age, that may put you at risk for falsely confessing, but perhaps the most surprising is innocence itself. Innocent people are more likely to waive their rights, and to fall prey to the pressures that police use to coerced compliance. This is part 4 of False Confessions, a six-part miniseries.

It isn’t just a few bad cops using psychological coercion. It’s a part of the manual. Used globally and by officers in all fifty states, the Reid Technique works. It reliably gets suspects to confess. Whether those confessions are reliable, though, is a trickier question. This is part 3 of False Confessions, a six-part miniseries.

Most of us believe we would never confess to a crime we didn’t commit. But by our best estimates, there are are upwards of 5,000 innocent people locked up in our prison system who falsely confessed. What is happening inside interrogation rooms to break the will of so many innocent people? To answer this question, we’re speaking to world’s foremost experts in the psychology of false confessions and police interrogation methods, as well as the innocent people, like Amanda, who've found themselves in the unimaginable position of confessing to something they didn't do. And to begin, we're going back to the seed out of which modern interrogations grew, the brutal third degree treatment that stretches back to the Inquisition. This is part 1 of False Confessions, a six-part miniseries.

The first sentence of Stephanie Land’s “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive” reads “my daughter learned to walk in a homeless shelter.” That life of struggle transformed when Land wrote Maid, which inspired a Netflix original series, but with the success came a new Labyrinth - one of PTSD, imposter syndrome, and misunderstanding.

At Westchester University, Professor of creative writing, Kristine Ervin teaches her students how to process their experiences through words. For her, this catharsis is personal. Her memoir, "Rabbit Heart, A Mother’s Murder, a Daughter’s Story," is a book she had been shaping since her mother was abducted and murdered when she was eight years old. While Kristine found herself lost in the wake of that brutal event, processing that loss and that trauma became its own labyrinth, and one in which she at first found her footing with poetry.

Greg Lukianoff is one of our nation's foremost defenders of free speech, co-author of "The Canceling of the American Mind," and president of FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression. His journey to this place wasn’t easy, on a personal level, but the depressive spiral Greg eventually transcended gave him insight into the problems plaguing our public discourse.
