  • In the playing fields of life, we are all athletes. Whether we are elite performers in an actual sport, or the grocery-getting, kid-chasing, suitcase-schlepping, housework-doing athlete that life demands, we may all experience common injuries at some point.

Join Dr. Parker Hays for a conversation with Dr. Susie Wehring, professor of athletic training with decades of experience treating athletes from Division 1 collegiate to the professional tennis circuit. Muscle strains, ligament sprains, and tendon injuries may befall any of us, but the tenets of treatment are consistent and can help us get back to playing shape to fight another day.

We discuss the initial inflammatory phase followed by two phases that set the stage for healing and long term return to function. Further, we touch on the conditions for healing, including sleep, nutrition, and psychology, as well as the philosophy of training to prevent injury in the first place.

We get knocked down, but we get up again…

  • How do you make yourself live healthier, longer?  At LIW we work with people on the factors that really matter for their healthspan.  Among the core elements of your well-being is social connection and relationships.  But, really, just how important are they? What kinds?

Some argue that exercise is "the most potent longevity drug we have."  Yes, there's pretty good evidence for that.  But there's a strong argument to be made that if we exclusively focus on things like exercise, diet, sleep, even our purpose, we may overlook a factor that's even more influential long-term for us: connection to others.

Join Dr. Parker Hays in this episode as he discusses what may just be the key ingredient to feeling better and living fully, longer.

  • Medicine and its delivery to those who need it comes in many forms.  Some physicians have learned that no single branch of medicine has a monopoly on all effective modalities and have taken on a more inclusive, integrative approach. One of those pioneers who sought to bridge the gap between traditional allopathic medicine and complimentary modalities is Dr. Russ Greenfield.

Dr. Greenfield was one of the first graduates of the University of Arizona's Integrative Medicine Fellowship, training under Dr. Andrew Weil.  His journey from the advent of this field in the U.S. and his whole-health approach to patient care today is inspiring and encouraging for all of us.
