Joshua, Jason, and Jess -- the 3 J's -- are all together in Scotland and are on the road to Ardnamurchan to meet with Carl Crafts (Sales Executive) and Al (Distiller) for a very behind the scenes tour at the Ardnamurchan distillery. It's not too often folk have a chance to get through to a distillery so we thought we'd share a virtual experience with you.
We'll go through each step of the whisky making process at Ardnamurchan and then end with some fantastic cask pops in the warehouses! Finally, distillery tour aside, the 3 J's share details of their final online bottlings for 2024 launching Nov 21st!

Listen in as Joshua and Jason turn the overview of casks into a deep dive of casks all while tasting a few new whiskies along the way. Wondering which bottles to get to put under the Christmas Tree, or for friends and family during Chanukkah or Kwanzaa? Tune in friends. You will not want to miss this. New single malt distilleries have been popping up everywhere be they in the UK, EU, US, Asia, the Middle East, etc... it seems one can't open up their email inboxes without hearing news of a new distillery enterprise. Quite exciting if you ask us!
Nearly all of these distilleries start by launching a Vodka and a Gin (or some sort of "botanical spirit") to keep their distillery afloat while they wait for their whisky to be of age to bottle and sell. Most of these distilleries -- some of our very favorites, to be very clear -- are set up specifically to produce delicious whiskies at very young ages (3, 4, 5yo, etc...).
This is where Kythe's approach stands apart. Their aim is to make whisky in the manner it was made in the 50's/60's/70's which could very well mean they're not expected to release a standard core whisky for quite some time. Impatient folk like us may have to wait (and wait) to taste. The waiting is the hardest part but good things also come to those that wait so....
Anywho, listen in as Jess discusses the ins and outs of the Kythe Distillery with 2 of its founders: Jonny McMillan & Angus MacRaild. Listen, too, to hear details of our latest US release and our upcoming global releases. 8 casks of whisky. So many that we're calling it a #MurderOfCasks !

Joshua and Jason have a sit down with the wonderful Lasse Vesterby, CEO & Co-Founder of Stauning Whisky Distillery.
While rye whisky continues to grow and evolve here in the US, just a stones throw across the pond is our friends at Stauning Whisky Distillery in Denmark who've also had a keen focus on rye whisky. But, alas (or thankfully?), because Denmark does not have a centuries old tradition of whisky making, Stauning is free to create the whiskies it wants to make and, boy or boy, are they creating some fantastic whiskies (both rye and single malt)!
Listen in as J&J dig deep into Stauning with Lasse. Add to this, the pair review a Stauning single cask bottled for First Fill Spirits out of Saratoga Springs as well as Westland's new Beer Cask Finish.

J&J also taste a new Westland release: Westland's Wine Cask Finish.

Joshua & Jason highlight another whisky sample from their friends at Blind Barrels.

For some, whisky is a passing thing to enjoy every now and again ("gimme a Scotch on the rocks!"), for others it's a hobby to be explored while you're living the rest of your life as normal, and for others, like Irene Tan, it's a fascination and an obsession.
Irene Tan is, perhaps, one of the most passionate people in whisk(e)y here in the US and her name is synonymous with great barrel picks for her shop (Canterbury Liquors aka Whisky Mentors) as well as fascinating and delicious blends.
Listen in and learn why Irene is someone you should be paying attention to if you care about whisky.

The first in a series of interviews held in Texas during an SCN launch features Jason sitting down with Emma Crandall & Gabe RiCharde of Balcones Distilling. The trio discuss distilling and blending practices, basically all things Balcones, but touch on the category and future of American Single Malt writ large.
This episode is paired quite well with an SCN release of Balcones -- a massively delicious single malt made exclusively from the legendary Golden Promise barley. Why not open your bottle and enjoy this episode with a generous pour? Don't have a bottle yet? Let's remedy that: https://bit.ly/3X9Q6QD

Joshua and Jason met MGP's Master Distiller, Ian Stirsman, on a chance encounter at the legendary Jack Rose Dining Saloon just after an equally legendary Single Cask Nation event just after the pair won the 2024 Icons of Whisky Award for Independent Bottler of the Year.
Having the chance to talk to someone responsible for making the world's most recognizable bourbon and rye whiskies was a true blessing and a blast to boot!
Add to this, the duo brought Ford Ray in on the conversation as part of Ford's #GivingTuesday2023 winnings. Ford is a long standing Nation member and getting to know him a bit more was time well spent. We hope you agree.

Joshua, Jason, and James have some shared history as all three started their whisky careers via their blogs. Joshua had Jewmalt, Jason had Guid Scotch Drink, and James had Scotch Odyssey.
Fast-forward 13 years and, well, you know Joshua and Jason's story with the birth and growth of Single Cask Nation, but James' journey (or should we say odyssey) led him to the one to take the helm as Whiskymaking Director of Compass Box as John Glaser steps down. Holy moly if that's not the dream of a whisky lover's lifetime we're not sure what is!
Add to this, Joshua and Jason detail the launch of Free Shipping at singlecasknation.com as well as re-share the details of their 6 new American whiskies launching June 6th, 2024.
There's so much to share but, seeing as this is a podcast, best to listen than to read, no?

Few people in the industry have had as storied career in whisky in the way that Chris Riesbeck has. Aside from Chris' story being a fascinating one, Chris is a dear friend and someone Joshua and Jason have been keen to have on the podcast. Today is that day. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as the boyz did.
Add to all this, Joshua and Jason share details of the next 6 bottlings for SCN Online and they're all American whiskies. Real charmers, to be sure.

Aiming to be green is not a new idea. There are a number of distilleries within Scotland (and the around the world) that are taking measures to improve their processes while reducing their carbon foot print.
What is new is a distillery who leads with this idea. From their barley, to their boiler, to their bottles, Nc'nean distillery have proven themselves to be good stewards of our planet while producing whisky that they're incredibly proud of (because it's wonderfully delicious).
Listen in as Joshua discusses the ins and outs of Nc'nean distillery with Annabel Thomas, founder.

Those that follow bourbon surely know both Denny Potter and Jane Bowie. If not due to their work with Maker's Mark (as well as Heaven Hill in the case of Denny Potter) surely for being on the padcost previously (talking about Maker's Mark & Heaven Hill... boy, I'm typing in circles!).
Having Jane and Denny back on the padcost was an absolute treat. Discussing to the Potter Jane story; hearing how it started and how things are going was a joy as were the laughs along the way.

As far as we're aware, you can count the number of US-based independent bottlers; bottling whisky in the Scottish tradition where the distillery is highlighted/mentioned on two fingers: Single Cask Nation and Lost Lantern.
Listen in as Joshua and Jason (of SCN fame) discuss independent bottling with Nora & Adam (of Lost Lantern fame). There are also a number of Lost Lantern bottlings tasted in this episode. Spoiler alert: they're some highly quaffable bottlings, to be sure!

As a padcost and as padcosters Joshua and Jason always set out to have a fair bit of a focus on independent brands, independent bottlers, and just the independent spirit of the whisky industry in general.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is not a distiller and they do not refer to themselves as an independent bottler. Rather, that are a "Society" (and quite easily the largest whisky society on the planet) that bottles whisky specifically for their Society members. It's a different take, for sure, but one of the most successful "different takes" on whisky since its inception some 41 years ago.
Listen in as Joshua and Jason talk with two key people within the SMWS: Kai Ivalo (Spirits Director) and Euan Campbell (Head of Whisky Creation). The conversation a blast, was wide ranging, and supplemented by a new sherry cask speysider.
