  • The minute Kelly and Lewis of the Dollyrots stepped into Respectable Street, I knew it was going to be a night to remember. Their infectious energy and unique punk flair instantly set the tone for an evening of raucous laughter, heartfelt stories, and a musical connection that began way back in eighth grade. Our conversation roamed from the spirited atmosphere of their first-ever show at this iconic punk venue to the inventive spirit that fuels their holiday tunes, including a punk rock rendition of "Auld Lang Syne." As we laughed about my engineer's introduction to hardcore punk, the Dollyrots also shed light on the challenges of touring the vast state of Florida and how punk's inherent upbeat spirit provides a stark contrast to other genres when it comes to celebrating love on Valentine's Day.

Cruising through the streets of LA with a dream is an adventure not for the faint-hearted, and Kelly and Lewis embody the discipline and determination it takes to turn artistic aspirations into reality. Our chat took a deep dive into the highs and lows of chasing their musical passions, where the glamour of the City of Angels meets the gritty reality of tour life and the importance of keeping one's head above water amidst the seductive excesses of the industry. The duo didn't shy away from discussing the post-tour blues and how the pandemic's live performance void led them to the discovery of virtual shows—becoming a weekly source of community and hope for their fans.

We wrapped up the episode pondering the ever-changing tides of punk music, from its raw beginnings to the polished soundtracks of today's indie scene. The Dollyrots, ambassadors of "bubblegum punk," took us behind the scenes of their creative process, sharing how they've woven influences like Nirvana into their distinctive sound while maintaining a playful edge through parody and fan engagement. The heart of our discussion celebrated the unbreakable bond between artist and audience, a connection Kelly and Lewis cherish deeply, whether they're high-fiving fans mid-song or shipping out DIY merch with a personal touch. By the end of this musical odyssey, it was clear that the spirit of punk rock isn't just alive—it's kicking harder than ever, thanks to bands like the Dollyrots.

  • Meaning of ATER: Ater – Latin adjective
Dull black (as opposed to niger, shining black); dark2. Gloomy, sad, dismal, unlucky ATER is an enigmatic band that was born in Santiago, Chile in 2010, out of the mind of Fernando Bühring @fernando.ater. Originally named ¨Aeons Collide¨ to later be re-named ¨ATER¨ in 2013. The original lineup featured drummer Matias Acuña, currently of Follakzoid and guitarist Yeray Santos. ATER went on to become an international band lead by founding member, Chilean multi-instrumentalist Fernando ¨Feroz¨ Bühring.

With a new lineup and a new vision, Fernando leads the composing process of a new album titled ¨SOMBER¨, combining sounds from Black and Death Metal to Progressive and Heavy Meshuggah-inspired syncopated grooves. Pushing the boundaries of the instrumentation by bringing the tuning down to low earth-shattering frequencies, all topped with demented-sounding low growl vocals, reminiscent of bands like Septicflesh, Hate and Belphegor, plus the heavy ambience and clean sections that became ATER´s signature with the first album ¨EGS¨(for short).

SOMBER was recorded during the Covid Pandemic and was mixed by Feroz in a temporary studio in Mexico City where he was hiding during restricted times. The album was then mastered by none other than Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound (Mastodon, Gojira, Korn)

  • White Dog new album Double Dog Dare recorded over a period of eight days at Stuart Sikes Audio (with engineer Andrew McCalla) in Austin “The subject matter of these songs is pretty eclectic, to be honest” notes John. “Let’s see… there’s a song about a bank heist, and another one about the Vietnam war. Then there’s one about draining an old lake! Glenn’s Tune is about Rex’s late father. Hell, we even did a radio jingle. So yeah we are kinda all over the place ha ha ha!”

The band, firmly lead by the sober singer and main songwriter GENE LOUIS, is still as raucous, energetic and melodic as ever. The new music will punch you in the face and kick you in the nuts at the same time. Just good time hard rock n roll delivered with a punk snarl.

    THE ALARM’S JULES PETERS
    Hosts TREAT: RETREAT
For Women Who Have Breast Cancer
Free Weekend of Restorative Therapy and Camaraderie
To Relieve the Stress and Feeling of Isolation During Treatment

Nomination Process for 2025 Edition Open Now!

When Jules Peters of THE ALARM received her final dose of chemotherapy seven years ago this month in 2017, it set off a life mission in her mind: use her massive platform as a member of the band to draw attention to breast cancer and connect with other women who are stricken with it (her husband/bandmate Mike Peters was doing similar, having been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma years before). Having co-founded Love Hope Strength Foundation which raises awareness and funds for cancer research, care and awareness with Mike, their advocacy has created a worldwide network of fundraisers including mountaintop concerts, a B&B in Wales for cancer patients, and the aforementioned foundation.

Last month, Jules hosted the inaugural Love Hope Strength Treat: Retreat, a free weekend event in the U.K., which provided an opportunity for women affected by breast cancer the opportunity to rest, relax, regroup, recuperate, reset, retreat, and heal. Taking place at the Waterfalls Apartments and The Red Bar and Cafe in Dyserth, North Wales, Jules and 18 fellow women patients used this weekend retreat to give them hope, build their strength and feel loved.

The women were entertained by an exceptional acoustic performance by Jules’ husband and founder of The Alarm, Mike Peters, who performed the meditative fan favorite “Walk Forever By My Side” from the Strength album and “Heroine,” a ballad he had written for Jules as she was undergoing breast cancer treatment.

  • Listen in as The Pipeman brings the thunder of nostalgia with JA6UR from the band Lÿnx, taking us back to the raucous era of '80s metal. Our conversation is a laugh riot, filled with anecdotes about name mix-ups and how '80s rock stars were the epitome of excess compared to today's musicians. We explore the Sunset Strip's heyday with legendary bands like Motley Crue, reminiscing about an age where Jack Daniels was the accessory of choice. JA6UR and I discuss how Lÿnx is keeping that electrifying spirit alive, possibly fitting like a glove on a tour with icons like Motley Crue, showcasing the undying allure of that high-voltage time in music history.

The journey of forming a band amidst a global pandemic is no small feat, and Lÿnx's tale is one of resilience and rock 'n' roll revival. We unpack the excitement of transitioning from uncertain beginnings to electrifying live performances that capture the soul of '80s metal. Our chat touches on the power of a single track to ignite a crowd and the band's frontman's insistence on live gigs to channel the authentic vibe of the decade. As I reflect on my own experiences with Halloween gigs and advice from a Metal Blade Records owner, we look forward to Lÿnx's upcoming album - a fusion of punk and hair metal, promising a return to the unabashed rebellion of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

Wrap up your day with a blast from the past as we chat with Lÿnx's lead vocalist about his transition from mellow acoustic sets to fronting a high-octane rock band. His tale of joining the band and their dedication to a theatrical live presence is as compelling as the anthems they perform. We delve into the importance of creating an entire artistic experience - from the visuals to the lyrics - and how it ties into the immersive world of '80s music culture. For those eager to join the party, we share how fans can connect with the band, dive into their new music, and snag some killer merch. Tune in for a rocking ride with Lÿnx, where the promise of a good time is as steadfast as their riffs.

    (0:00:05) - Rock 'N' Roll Nostalgia Revived (7 Minutes)
This chapter kicks off with an energetic introduction by yours truly, the Hyped man, where I bring the essence of W4CY Radio to life. I have the pleasure of welcoming JA6UR from the band Lÿnx to the show, where we chuckle over the common mispronunciations of his name. We reminisce about the iconic '80s metal scene, drawing parallels to today's music world, while JA6UR reflects on his personal connections to the era through his family's musical tastes. We laugh over a meme that contrasts '80s rock stars with today's musicians, and JA6UR assures us that he's keeping the spirit alive with his own Jack Daniels moments. Our conversation takes a nostalgic turn as I recount firsthand experiences with legendary bands like Motley Crue, emphasizing the unforgettable and often wild nature of the Sunset Strip days. I reflect on the influence of Halloween gigs, iconic venues like The Roxy and The Troubadour, and the impact of music recommendations from a record store clerk who happened to own Metal Blade Records. We discuss the upcoming first full-length album, set to release on May 9th, and how it signifies the band's evolution, incorporating a blend of punk and '80s hair metal with an almost anarchist ethos, aiming to revive the spirit of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

  • Join The Pipeman, your host, on a journey through the soundscapes of raw emotion and truth as we sit down with the phenomenal artist EKOH. Together, we unravel the layers of 'heart hop'—a genre his fans coined, capturing the essence of his deeply personal and authentic songwriting. EKOH's connection with his audience goes beyond the music; it's a bond forged in genuine self-expression and a shared understanding that when an artist remains true to themselves, the music they create not only resonates on a personal level but also strikes a universal chord.

Listen in as EKOH and I explore the complexities of vulnerability in our latest track, "Mayday," a raw depiction of the challenges faced when opening up in relationships. This heart-to-heart reveals how societal norms often discourage the expression of emotions, especially among men, leading to a disconnect in our most intimate bonds. We reflect on the paradox that it's often in moments of crisis, when all pretenses fall away, that we feel the closest to others. This candid discussion sheds light on the profound need for authenticity, both in our personal lives and in the public eye, and how being seen for who we truly are is vital for growth and happiness.

In the final chapter of our conversation, we reminisce about the unforgettable free show on February 9th, a collaboration that celebrated community and mental health awareness. The event, which featured Vans and the philanthropic efforts of MusicCares, showcased how the music industry can come together to support fans facing financial hardships, while also addressing the increasing pressures of social media. EKOH shares his gratitude for the event's success, emphasizing the importance of staying true to the roots of music as a form of resistance and self-expression. This episode is a heartfelt reminder of the power of music to unite, inspire, and heal.

I discuss with Dave the unique challenges and inspirations that come with being a solo artist in the hard rock genre, emphasizing the importance of skill and creativity over fame and connections. Dave shares his journey of dedication to mastering various instruments and the recording process, along with the realities of ego, comparison, and competition in the music industry. (0:14:37) - Modern Music Trends and Artistic Integrity (7 Minutes) This chapter examines the evolution of song structure in contemporary music and the tension between commercial success and artistic integrity. We explore the prevalent formula in hit songs, exemplified by bands like Nickelback and country music hits, which often follow a predictable pattern and use similar keys, tempos, and melodic choices. I share my personal journey as a one-man band, emphasizing my commitment to creating music that satisfies my own standards, rather than conforming to industry formulas. Highlighting the challenge of working with producers who have crafted numerous chart-toppers, I discuss the respectful tension that arises from pursuing a sound that balances unique artistry with commercial appeal. I stress the importance of individuality and musicianship, aiming to offer listeners something distinctive by infusing progressive metal and rock elements into accessible, well-structured songs without relying on a copy-paste approach. (0:22:03) - Influence of Music and Religion (6 Minutes) This chapter we explore personal journeys in music creation, valuing uniqueness over conformity. I share my early musical attempts and the pursuit of a distinctive sound, a sentiment echoed in the collaborative efforts highlighted in my latest song, "Systemic." Guest Ryan Barrier's role in translating my vision into cover art showcases the importance of finding skilled partners who understand and execute your ideas. We touch on the distinctive vocal stylings of '90s icons and how Aaron from Gemini Syndrome's unique voice and image fit the creative vision for "Systemic." The conversation shifts to the song's inspiration from the Roe V. Wade overturning, and its critique of the misuse of organized religion in politics, stressing the need for elected officials to represent all constituents, not just their supporters. (0:28:01) - Separation of Church and State (5 Minutes) This chapter addresses the growing normalization of Christianity within American politics and its stark contrast to the founding fathers' intention of separating church and state. I express concerns over using religion as a weapon and how it contradicts the very essence of Christ's teachings. We explore the irony of Christian dominance in a country founded on religious freedom and the right to express—or not express—religious beliefs. We also touch on the personal journey of a man of faith, Aaron, as he grapples with his role in representing an album that challenges these issues. Furthermore, we discuss the political implications of a proposed bill in Texas, which could replace school guidance counselors with chaplains, emphasizing the dangerous overlap of religious doctrine and public policy. This chapter ultimately calls for a reflection on the principles of democracy and the protection of individual rights irrespective of religious affiliation. (0:33:19) - Issues With Legislation and Division (15 Minutes) This chapter we explore the intersection of religion, politics, and corporate influence, particularly focusing on recent events in Texas where legislation is pushing for the installation of the Ten Commandments in public schools, reflecting a broader discussion on the role of Christianity in public spaces. We touch on the implications of corporate personhood, exemplified by Hobby Lobby's healthcare policies shaped by religious beliefs. We also scrutinize the dichotomy of religious freedom and critique the millions spent on Christian Super Bowl ads that could serve more philanthropic causes. Moreover, we discuss the concerning trend of book bans and targeted restrictions in education, drawing parallels between these tactics and historical authoritarian regimes. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize the importance of empathy, inclusivity, and democracy, while celebrating music as a unifying force in a divided society. (0:48:37) - Exploring Cuba, Empathy, and Music (7 Minutes) This chapter opens with my reflections on a transformative trip to Cuba, highlighting the striking contrast between vibrant culture and poverty, as well as the resilience and warmth of the Cuban people. We then transition to the power of art, music, and human connection as vital forces for positive change and understanding in society. The conversation takes a personal turn as I share my journey as a motivational speaker and musician who has overcome clinical deafness, emphasizing the importance of empathy, integrity, and perseverance. I conclude with practical advice for listeners facing challenges and encourage them to support one another, while also providing information on how to connect with and access my music project, Fear of Water, across various platforms.
