  • Today we're going to delve into a topic that affects our wellbeing in more ways than we realise: the damaging effects of sugar. Sugar has become a staple in our daily lives, hiding in our morning coffee, desserts, and even seemingly healthy foods. But beneath its sweetness lies a deceptive nature that wreaks havoc on our physical and mental health. In this episode, we'll explore the addictive nature of sugar and its impact on our brains, the connection between sugar and inflammation, and the alarming link between excessive sugar consumption and conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and even cancer. Join me as we uncover the truth about sugar and learn how to break free from its grip.

    Here are the highlights:

[01:57] Excessive sugar consumption leads to cravings, overconsumption, and addiction

[05:04] Man cured cancer with diet; inspiring testimony.

[08:59] Avoiding sugar is challenging; even savory foods contain it. To break my addiction, I've changed my shopping habits, opting for homemade meals using whole ingredients like chicken for salads and curries.

[12:04] Diabetes and sugar addiction should be addressed. The financial interests of pharmaceutical companies, which profit from obesity and inflammatory diseases, may hinder potential solutions. Recognise your power to make informed decisions about your health.

[14:03]I hope the information shared here has inspired you to make positive changes in your journey towards wellbeing.

  • In this episode, we're diving deep into the damage caused by fad diets. We'll explore the physical and psychological impact of restrictive diets, and discuss the negative language we use when it comes to food. But it doesn't end there - we'll also unpack the prevalence of unhealthy food choices and the addictive nature of processed foods.

However, there is hope! We'll explore a path toward true health and nourishment that goes beyond calorie counting and guilt. It's about embracing a holistic approach and listening to our body's wisdom. I'll also introduce my Nourish Me for Life program, which focuses on mindset as a key element in finding freedom from destructive eating habits.

    Here are the highlights:

(02:48) Constant food dialogue consumes our lives, causing restriction, guilt, anxiety, and impact on mental well-being.

(05:00)] The foods we consume can stimulate dopamine, leading to addiction. Similar to alcohol or drugs, these additives are designed to make us crave more.

(08:18) A client had a strong sugar dependency due to a childhood reward system. We worked together to address the root cause, and now she no longer craves sugar.

(10:21) Stay nourished, empowered, and own your path to a fulfilling life.

Have you ever found yourself turning to food for comfort, stress relief, or a way to cope with challenging emotions? Then this episode is for you. Join me as we explore the emotional journey of food addiction. Uncover the science behind it, and discover strategies for cultivating a healthier relationship with food.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:23) We've all experienced those moments when life feels really overwhelming, stress weighs us down, and emotions run high.

(01:35) We just want to dive into sort of our high carbohydrate, fatty, sugary meal.

(02:27) What happens when this coping mechanism becomes a cycle of unhealthy addictions and emotional eating?

(02:56) We feel guilty and shame about what we've done, and that vicious cycle just begins.

(03:08) The act of using food as a way to soothe or suppress emotions is a complex struggle that many of us face.

(03:35) Emotional eating has been found to be closely linked to the brain's reward system.

03:54) Breaking free from emotional eating and unhealthy addictions to food is a journey of self-discovery and self-compassion.

(04:13) Imagine a life where food no longer holds power over your emotions.

(07:55) Write down your dialogue, see what comes up, and then decide

(09:19) Health is much more important than these short-term fixes.

(10:33) What you need is to decide to put your wellbeing first and take those first few steps.

(11:26) Develop those healthier coping mechanisms, and cultivate a sense of self-compassion for yourself. And get help and support when you need it.

  • In today's episode, we’re going to dive into the topic of thriving in a challenging work environment. It's really about building resilience, which is something that is paramount in our fast-paced, ever-evolving work environments. Remember that every challenge we face at work is an opportunity for growth. We can always choose to turn a setback into a comeback.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:46) Put my head in my hands and just cry with the amount of work that I had and the impact it was having on my health and my wellbeing.

(02:38) Every time we can turn that negativity into a positive thought, we are building muscle in our brains so that positivity becomes more natural to us.

(2:57) Cultivate a strong network of colleagues and friends who can provide emotional support.

(03:35) A healthy diet and enough sleep can boost your mood, give you the energy to tackle challenges and increase your tolerance for stress.

(04:48) Change pushes us out of our comfort zones and into new territory where we can grow and learn.

(05:02) Mindfulness is about staying present and focused on the task at hand.

(06:06) Resilience is like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets.

  • In today's episode, we're talking all about carbohydrates and their impact on our metabolic health and brain function. Carbohydrates are a crucial component of our diet providing the body with the energy it needs to function optimally. However, not all carbohydrates are equal, and understanding their effects on our bodies is essential. So let's dive into the science and explore the intricate relationships between carbohydrates, metabolic health, and brain function.

    Here are the highlights:

(00:59) Understanding their effects on our bodies is essential.

(01:24) Refined carbs are rapidly digested by our bodies leading to a sudden spike in blood sugar levels.

(02:01) Consumption of refined carbohydrates can overload our body's insulin response.

(02:59) Complex carbohydrates, such as legumes and vegetables contain natural fibre that slows down the digestive process.

(04:29) This rollercoaster effect is due to the rapid rise and fall of blood sugar levels.

(05:26) It's absolutely crucial to adopt a balanced approach to carbohydrate consumption.

(05:54) 50% of your plate should be full of nice, leafy greens and various different colours of vegetables.

(08.06) Every choice that we make regarding our diet and lifestyle has the power to shape our wellbeing.

She will also be sharing a short meditation for listeners to experience.

    Here are the highlights:

(02:39) Essentially all you are doing is creating a way of paying attention.

(05:40) You're training your mind, you're building that capacity.

(14:42) We are mindless, we are just going on autopilot through our lives.

(19:14) It's not that I'm not a meditator anymore, it's just I'm not meditating right now.

(21:05) You don't need a special cushion in a special spot.

(23:19) Weave it into your life whenever you can.

  • In this week’s podcast, I am talking about developing your personal power, which is really about how you express your creative energy. Are you open to changing? Are you pushing down your personal power in order to appease other people? I’ll be exploring how having and cultivating personal power is a key element to wellbeing.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:24) Power is a tricky word.

(01:41) Personal power is about feeling empowered in your own life.

(02:25) Most of the time they blame others for the things that happen to them.

(02:43) You know your boundaries and limitations, and you honor them.

(04:21) You need to stop hiding from yourself.

(05:01) Turn your victim mentality into something that produces power.

(06:38) Move on to the things you can change.

(07:28) Know your values, what you desire and what your goals are.

(08:22) Self-regulation is about behaving in ways that match your goals and values, which increases your personal power.

(10:28) Research has shown that most people are kinder to others than they are to themselves.

(12:45) Treat yourself as you would a good friend and see what happens.

  • Today I'm talking all about the six human hungers. There are various ways that our body gives us cues that make us eat and or certainly make us feel that we are hungry. I am going to explain how they interact and work with our bodies. The six human hungers are nutritional hunger, thirst, low blood sugar, emotional hunger, which I'm sure is one that many of us recognise quite a lot, and lastly empty stomach hunger. I’ll be exploring all six in this episode and explaining why it’s important to understand them when it comes to choosing a healthy way to eat.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:25) Nutritional hunger actually is the only form of true hunger.

(03:04) It was only when I learned to nourish my body in the way that it was supposed to be nourished, that my hunger just disappeared.

(04:01) Give our bodies the right messages and give our bodies the right nutrients.

(05:31) We can only go out without water for a few days.

(06:41) The first steps to towards a better lifestyle and a better healthy body is to drink more water.

(10:07) It's got no means of actually releasing fat.

(12:49) All the different colours of the rainbows are really, important to our overall health.

(15:11) We are in a constant cycle of high blood sugar and low blood sugar.

(17:07) It’s really important to get off this sugar rollercoaster.

(18:47) There's a massive connection between your gut health and your brain.

(27:36) Think of this dialogue as a conversation between a devil and an angel.

(34.54) You don't need to diet because you've mastered your various hungers.

  • In this week’s podcast, I am talking about spirituality or what represents our inner world. Spirituality is about going within and discovering what's there to support you. There are a variety of spiritual practices that a person can incorporate to support wellness in the workplace. It doesn’t matter what your religious beliefs are, spiritual practices and tools like meditation, visualisation and prayer can all fall into this category.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:06) I've been gradually increasing my spiritual practices.

(02:12) A spiritual practice isn't just for people who believe in souls or an afterlife.

(02:57) Spiritual practice is simply about quieting the noise around you and deeply reconnecting with yourself.

(03:52) I like to think that there are actually spirits out there that are helping and supporting me.

(04:18) It's essential that we practice and prioritise our rest.

(05:04) Journaling is a really great way to start this process and relearn how to listen to yourself again.

(07:19) A big part of spiritual practice is all about gratitude.

(09:11) Your intuition will guide you to the spiritual practices that are right for you.

(10:00) Enjoy the journey towards being more connected and feeling truly alive.

  • In this week’s episode, I have a very special guest, Charlotte Goodwill. She is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Telecoms Professionals. Her focus as CEO is on diversifying the digital workforce, advocating career development through apprenticeships and membership, and serving as the voice for the industry.

She's encouraged many businesses to look to apprentices as a solution to plugging the UK's technical skills gap to train future generations. She's passionate about empowering people to turn their love of digital technology into a skillset ideal for their future career, building a sustainable, diverse, and inclusive workforce for the future. She is also a mother to two beautiful children, a conscious leader, and an advocate for mental health and early careers.

    Here are the highlights:

(02:03) I was only 15 when I left school due to clinical depression

    (02:36) I didn't have my first full-time job until I was 20.

(04:18) I didn't have the best start and I wanted to help young people who were in a similar situation to me.

(06:06) At 27 years old, becoming a female leader in a very male-dominated industry was pretty scary.

    (22:08) We implemented flexi-hours.

(25:32) Leadership should come from a place of trust, if the employers then break that trust, then that's on them.

(26:39) Duvet days are basically mental health days, but duvet just sounds much nicer.

(33:03) Lateness and absences have significantly decreased.

(46:37) There is no point in implementing any initiatives if you aren't fostering an environment that is already inclusive and equal from the very start.

(50:28) My main priority is to work with my team to achieve our mission and to continue learning in my role as a leader.

    About Charlotte Goodwill:

  • Today I want to talk about busyness and the busyness of our lives. We've all had times when our busyness is just overwhelming at times. We are often looking after our families, parents, and work, and our work-life balance is really pressured. We don't find time for ourselves and we just find life a real struggle. What I wanted to do today was to share some tips on how you can get your life back into control.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:20) A few years ago I just didn't seem to have time for anything.

(01:43) You have to sit in silence and connect with yourself.

(02:42) Time management is important when it comes to work and life balance.

(03:17) Do not allow everyone else's schedule to become your schedule.

(03:46) Ways that you can say no politely.

(05:03) I recommend waking up 30 minutes earlier.

(06:25) Be mindful and remain present with the boundaries you create

(07:55) How many of us are answering emails while we're in meetings?

(12:54) Don't be afraid to ask for help or to make changes.

(14:06) If you don't look after yourself, who is going to look after you?

  • In this week’s episode, I am going to share some insights from a conference that I attended a couple of weeks ago. It was the Health and Wellbeing at Work Conference at the NEC in Birmingham. There were many workshops discussing varied topics relating to wellbeing at work.

    Here are the highlights:

(01:52) Pay and reward are even more important now due to the cost of living.

(02:04) 85% of people expect support for their mental health.

(02:26) We need some analytical data to establish what's working.

(04:20) There were discussions about attrition and the so-called quiet quitting.

(04:49) People leaving and moving roles is actually the same as in 2010.

(05:18) A key outcome was consistent working patterns drive wellbeing.

(07:37) The key factors for wellbeing at work were job clarity and the health and safety of the individuals in the organisation.

(08:47) Preventative approaches are what we need to move towards.

(11:01) We have a series of leadership masterclasses that help support leaders

(12:35) We need to address the wellbeing of employees from both directions.

  • This episode is all about sleep and the importance of sleep for our wellbeing. I had some real struggles with sleep and insomnia at the age of 40. I really started to have a bad relationship with sleep, and it slowly it just got worse and worse and worse. It got to the point when I knew I had to seek help.

So, I am delighted to be interviewing Frances Taylor who is a sleep expert and helped me get back on track. She is a fellow of the International Stress Management Association. She's trained in CBTI, which is Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia and has 15 years of experience facilitating resilience events in diverse settings from universities to international film studios.

    Here are the Highlights:

04:36 Having a sleep problem for more than three months

06:50 Clients will avoid scheduling meetings in the morning.
