A Pennsylvania school district has reversed course and boarded up window openings it recently installed that allowed people in a middle school hallway to peer into two gender-neutral-designated bathrooms, the superintendent said Friday. The two windows were installed in recent weeks following a vote in August of the South Western School District’s conservative-majority school board, a move the board president said was designed to monitor and prevent misbehavior. Such openings weren’t installed in any of the school’s non-gender-neutral bathrooms. The openings were covered by plywood on Thursday on the advice of lawyers from the Harrisburg-based Independence Law Center, a conservative legal group the board consulted before ordering the windows installed, Superintendent Jay Burkhart said.

Several bands have shunned an upcoming metal festival to protest organizers billing them alongside Kyle Rittenhouse, the gunman who shot dead protesters amid a racial justice demonstration in 2020. Shell Shock II, which is scheduled for October 19 in Orlando, Florida, had announced a special guest appearance from Rittenhouse, prompting headliner Evergreen Terrace to pull out of the event, Loudwire reports. At least three other acts—Southpaw, Let Me Bleed and American Hollow— have now followed suit, apparently forcing organizers to bump a Slipknot cover band to the top spot.

A new reference book containing lore for a transgender Star Wars character is already causing a stir among the notoriously intolerant portion of the franchise’s fandom. On Wednesday, the Star Wars news X account Star Wars Holocron shared an image from the book Star Wars: Secrets of the Clone Troopers, which was released on Tuesday. The social media post contained an image of the character Sister, a trans woman and clone trooper who was first introduced in the Star Wars novel The Queen’s Hope, according to the Star Wars Fandom wiki.

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the tragic loss of Vanity Williams, an Air Force veteran and nursing student, who was recently murdered in Texas. Vanity is the third victim in Texas and the 25th transgender individual to be violently killed this year. This heartbreaking statistic is a stark reminder of the pervasive violence that continues to threaten the lives of transgender individuals, particularly African American women. Vanity’s service to our country deserves to be honored, and her aspirations to continue serving others in the nursing field reflect the strength and courage she embodied. Yet, her untimely death is a devastating example of the broader, systemic issues that disproportionately affect transgender women of color. The growing prevalence of policies that target transgender individuals contributes to a climate of intolerance and hostility. These policies not only undermine the rights and dignity of transgender people but also have a rippling effect that emboldens acts of violence and discrimination.

The first day of testimony in the trial of a man accused of killing a transgender woman in Highland Park ended abruptly. Before Tuesday morning's proceedings got underway, the defendant, Carlos Scotland, was talking to his attorney and mouthing something to someone in the gallery, but once the first witness took the stand, he couldn't stay awake. Scotland fell asleep as the lead investigator recounted the inconsistencies during his interrogation of the 18-year-old charged with the June 2023 murder of Ashia Davis at the Woodward Inn.

Dutch Olympian Steven van de Velde, 29, served 13 months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of raping a British girl he met on Facebook (and later in person, after traveling to the United Kingdom) in 2014. He was 19 at the time. He served 12 months in the UK and was then extradited to the Netherlands, where he was released after one month because of more lenient underage sex laws. Van de Velde’s name remains on the UK’s list of registered sex offenders. Although victims’ advocacy groups have called for van de Velde’s exclusion from the Olympics, the Dutch team has stood by him, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it lacks authority to block him from competing, but will allow him his own private quarters and block journalists from interviewing him.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has landed in the middle of a divide about gender in sports after her Italian competitor, Angela Carini, pulled out seconds into their bout at the Paris Olympics. Outcry has come from conservatives like former U.S. President Donald Trump and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni. Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 world championships after failing unspecified and untransparent eligibility tests for women’s competition from the now-banned International Boxing Association. Khelif was assigned female at birth and it says so on her passport, which is the International Olympic Committee’s threshold for eligibility for boxing because of the rift between the sport’s governing body and the IOC. Khelif is a formidable athlete with respected fighting skills, contending in top international events — including major amateur boxing tournaments over the past six years, such as the Tokyo Olympics. She’s won a few regional gold medals.

Republican politicians and pundits continue to freak out about a segment of Friday’s Paris Olympics opening ceremonies that featured drag queens. Conservatives jumped on a perceived likeness to Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” attacking the performance as an affront to Christianity.

Kyle Gass, one half of the rock due Tenacious D with actor and comedian Jack Black, has been dropped from his talent agency. Greene Talent confirmed the decision to Nexstar on Tuesday. A representative for the agency declined to comment any further. Gass has been facing criticism after a Tenacious D concert in Australia on Sunday, when he made a remark about the previous day’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Gass, who was celebrating his birthday, had been presented with a cake, and when Black told him to make a wish, Gass responded by saying, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

While LGBTQ activists see her declaration as an opportunity to push for greater rights in a country where same-sex relations are outlawed, anti-gay groups say they want Brenda Biya prosecuted.
