  • For today’s episode, Toshi had the privilege of chatting with Trish Dribnenki, National Policy and Practice Lead for the New Zealand Needle Exchange Programme.

Together, they spoke about the New Zealand Needle Exchange Programme – what started it, the services that it offers, and Trish’s role within the programme. Trish unpacked harm reduction and some of the misconceptions that people have around this philosophy, as well as how her work in this space has helped her navigate her own feelings of shame and self-stigma around drug use, and how us as listeners can make small changes in our daily lives to help reduce the stigma around drug use.

  • Jane had the privilege of speaking with Nikki Denholm for today’s podcast about her role as Director at The Light Project. With a background in health, Nikki is a pioneer who has specialised in establishing and leading positive, community-driven and solution-focused projects in response to emerging sexual health and gender issues. Nikki is also a company director of Exposure International – a collective of storytellers who want to bridge the gap between story and those who need to hear it. She’s the Project Director of the FGM Education Programme, and deservedly has been awarded a MNZM (New Zealand Order of Merit).

Jane and Nikki chatted about what The Light Project is and how Nikki got to where she is, the impact of pornography on young people, what's required to help young people be prepared for the kind of content they might see online, why it's so important for parents to have conversations about sex, sexuality and pornography with their kids, how the resources available on The Light Project and In The Know can help both parents and youth become more educated about the online world of pornography, and Nikki's thoughts on our latest book, How to talk with your kids about porn.

  • For today’s episode, Toshi had the privilege of chatting with Zoe Madden-Smith, multimedia journalist at Re: News, an online news platform here in New Zealand. Zoe has a passion for telling stories that centre and resonate with young people, being 26 years old herself, and she’s especially drawn to stories about sex, health, and anything that’s seen as ‘too taboo’ to talk about (which are some of the things we love to talk about here at Sex in Space).

We spoke about how she got into this role at Re: News, why the media has such an important role to play in sex education, what she wishes she’d learned from her own sex ed, and more.

Zoe was nominated for Video Journalist of the Year and Best Feature Video in the 2023 Voyager Media Awards, and was Runner Up Junior Feature writer of the year in 2022. She also has experience directing and producing a whole bunch of short and long-form stories. You can email her at [email protected] if you have an idea for a story.

  • Today’s episode is the second instalment in our series with Intersex Aotearoa. Toshi was lucky enough to speak with Dr. Rogena Sterling, who is deputy chair at Intersex Aotearoa, and a lecturer and researcher at the University of Waikato. Rogena has a passion for human rights, a key focus of their PhD, and was the first openly intersex person in New Zealand to receive a PhD. Last year, Rogena published a chapter titled ‘Janet and John’: Intersex Invisibility in the New Zealand Curriculum, which looks at the way intersex has been excluded from the Western education system and explores ways that intersex can be better represented and included in the curriculum. The focus of today’s episode is, more broadly, the history of intersex – how the story of intersex has changed over time, what we can learn from the past, and why it’s so important to educate about what it means to be intersex.
