Welcome to the Ski Moms Podcast, where we dive into the experiences and insights of skiing families. Today, we’re excited to share the findings from our Ski Moms Happiness Survey.

    Survey Overview:

The survey reached out to 1,000 women to understand the challenges and barriers they face in the skiing community. Our goal is to identify issues and advocate for changes that make skiing more inclusive and enjoyable for families.

    Key Findings:

Affordable Lessons: A staggering 94% of respondents indicated they would ski or snowboard more often if affordable group lessons were available for their children.Breastfeeding Facilities: About 59% of moms reported difficulties finding a clean, quiet place to breastfeed at ski areas.On-Mountain Childcare: An overwhelming 87% of participants expressed that access to on-mountain childcare would encourage them to ski more.

    Industry Insights:

The survey revealed a significant gap in how the ski industry supports families:Only 44% of moms feel the industry cares about supporting families.A concerning 55% disagree that the industry is doing everything it can to support families.

    Call to Action:

We discuss how the industry can address these issues, from providing dedicated lactation spaces to improving on-site family facilities.

    Conclusion:

The Ski Moms Happiness Survey offers invaluable insights for the ski industry to become more family-friendly. Let’s keep the conversation going and work towards a more inclusive skiing experience for everyone.

As an organization, we decided that standing on the sidelines waiting for change simply wasn't an option. The Ski Moms are trying to remove the friction points that keep more families from the slopes. We've built a huge, supportive online community of women helping women to get out and play. Now we're providing the ski industry with the data they need to be agents of change.

In this week’s podcast, we talk to three more moms from our group about what’s working in the industry and what’s not. We’re grateful to Anne Lemon, Ashley Nevlings and Katherine Sanpere for sharing their stories.

The Ski Moms' Happiness survey offers a unique data set for the ski industry. The Ski Moms' surveyed 1,000 women to find out what is standing between them and their ski mom dreams. In an effort to break down barriers and make skiing more inclusive, we followed up the survey with a number of long format interviews that we are sharing here..

In this episode we meet Corinne Prevot the founder of Skida, and her mom Margie. Skida is a Vermont based gear and apparel company that is known for their colorful neck gaiters, headbands, and other outdoor accessories.

Corrine and Margie walk us through Skida’s origins story, starting when Corrine was a high school student and ski racer in Vermont. We hear about the very first Skida hats and how Corinne later balanced entrepreneurship, skiing, and studies at Middlebury College (with a lot of help from her mom).

Skida gives back to the outdoor community, both big and small with partnerships ranging from local ski programs to the US Ski Team.

We loved learning about the Skida +1 program where for every Alpine or Nordic Hat purchase that is placed with a Skida Plus One promotional code, Skida will donate one hat to the corresponding cancer center.

We know things get busy in December, so we're revisiting one of our FAVORITE topics...ski travel. In this episode we talk with Brianne Manz, ski mom of 3 (ages 14, 12, 10) and founder of Stroller in the City. Brianne went to ski in Europe at an all-inclusive Club Med resort. We were fascinated with this concept. We were so excited to learn about the family’s ski trip to Club Med La Rosiere in the French Alps. The resort is located on the border of France, Switzerland and Italy, they flew into Geneva and Club Med provided transportation to the resort. Brianne shares all her best travel tips.

In this episode we meet Maria Baker, the founder of Nobody’s Princess, a size and shape inclusive brand of ski and snowboard pants for women. Maria started snowboarding with friends about 9 years ago (at age 30) and instantly fell in love with being on the snow.

Right away, Maria struggled to find snow pants that fit her properly. She kept ripping them, squeezing into pants that did not fit well and felt uncomfortable. When covid impacted Maria’s job in travel, she saw it was the right time to launch Nobody’s Princess. After some researching and networking Maria used indigogo and kickstarter to launch her snow pants. Nobody’s Princess snow pants have sizing that includes different lengths (short, regular, tall) in sizes 2-20. The snow pants come in a variety of fun colors like aqua, violet and raspberry.

We loved learning about how Maria sourced real life women from her local Facebook group to model her pants.

Maria also tells us about the ski resorts in Australia, including Buller and Thredbo and her favorite apres ski snacks.

In this episode we meet with Jessica Winstanley a ski and squash mom, who carves out time from her busy life in NYC to ski Plattekill Mountain. Plattekill has everything Jess and her family are looking for in a local ski resort, located in Roxbury, New York, a 3 hour drive from New York City.

Jessica grew up in Canada, and started skiing in her Dad’s backpack before she was even one year old. At age 7 Jessica started a ski and race program and loved skiing from a very young age. In college, Jessica got to explore skiing in Europe and eventually found herself living in Aspen, Colorado with some friends. Jessica was then drawn to a job in squash tournament event management in NYC and Frankfurt, Germany. This is where Jess met her husband, Peter Nicol, a professional squash player.

Jessica tells us more about the sport of squash. We learn about what we would expect to see at a squash match and some of the basis rules. Squash is a physically demanding sport that requires some serious strategy. It’s fast paced and a great workout.

But to bring it back to skiing, Jessica knew early on that skiing was going to be part of their family life. The family started at Mohawk Mountain (Cornwall, CT) and went on to other areas within driving distance of NYC. Eventually Jess found her happy place, Plattekill Mountain (Roxbury, NY) first taking day trips and then renting a seasonal ski house. Jessica had great things to say about the mountain’s race and learn to ski programs.

Plattekill sounds fantastic and we hope to get the chance to check it out very soon!

Meet Christine Anderson, a ski mom who has been skiing at Stratton (Winhall, Vermont) her whole life. Christine gives us tips and insights to navigate Stratton Mountain for a great family ski day.

We learn about Christine’s early childhood ski days learning to ski in Vermont with her family. Christine met her husband at Stratton and got married at the Stratton base lodge, but that’s a story for a different podcast 🙂

Stratton is a popular ski destination for families from nearby New York and New England since it’s southern Vermont and a bit more accessible. Christine gives us the lay of the land at Stratton, which has two base areas (Snow Bowl and Sun Bowl). In this episode we meet with sisters, Kailey and Karissa, the founders of Iksplor. Karissa is the CEO, Kailey is the Chief Marketing Officer. Iksplor is a Jackson Hole based, sustainably sourced, ski base layer clothing company. All their clothing is made from ethically sourced extra fine merino wool that makes outdoor adventures easier, longer and cozier! Iksplor makes clothing for the whole family from infant to adults.

They share their early childhood memories of skiing with their grandfather and parents starting at ages 2 & 3 years old. The sisters grew up in Colorado, skiing mainly on the weekends at Vail.

We learn about the inspiration that led Kailey and Karissa to start Iksplor and why they decided to focus on ski base layers. They think that base layers make or break your ski day or outdoor adventure, we could not agree more. It was really interesting to learn about how the sisters landed on merino wool, what is so special about it and how to properly care for your wool base layers. Iksplor has a wide variety of products including socks, hats and their newest first to market nursing base layer top.

We also talk about how they divide and conquer the many roles they have to play to keep Iksplor running smoothly - ranging from sales and marketing to product design.

Karissa and Kailey share all sorts of great insider tips on Jackson Hole and Snow King - from where to eat with kids to their favorite bakery and coffee shop.
