This week we had the pleasure of welcoming the incomparable JACKSON LANZING as a guest host! You know Jackson from such works as NYX, Batman Beyond, The Outsiders, Joyride, Star Trek, and many many more phenomenal comics, but we brought him here to talk about a different phenomenal comic: TALE OF SAND by Jim Henson, Jerry Juhl, & drawn by Ramon K Perez! Around 1967 to 1968, Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl were workshopping a ton of long-form screenplays, the most fully-formed of which was Tale of Sand, an epic adventure of absurdity and self-discovery. When this screenplay was rejected by the movie studios in the late 70's, it was shelved and lost, only to be found again many years later. Luckily for us, Ramon K. Perez brought this surreal vision into a stunning reality, telling a vibrant and deeply meaningful story with almost no dialogue. Tune in tomorrow to hear us deep dive into this delightful odyssey with the equally delightful Jackson Lanzing!

This week, it's time for Shaun's to-be-read pick, and BOY HOWDY, it's time for every trigger warning under the sun! That's right, it's STRAY BULLETS by David Lapham! RJ tried to warn us that this was one of the bleakest comics he'd ever read, and somehow this book still surprised us in the depths of depravity and despair it brought us to! That's not to say that it's not a beautiful work of spectacular storytelling and phenomenal art, it is all that and more! And it's using all that talent to aim straight for your heartstrings and then your jugular. It's a heavy episode: TW for sexual violence, mass shootings, child abuse, child abductions, and just the general unpleasantness of humanity

This week, we dive into Shaun's all time favorite pick: 100 BULLETS by Brian Azzarello & Eduardo Risso! This book is an absolute masterclass in storytelling. It starts out with a simple premise: a person is given an attache, complete with an unregistered gun, 100 untraceable bullets, and all the dirt they need to get even on whomever wronged them. With this conceit, the first 10 or so issues play out like an anthology series. But slowly, the strands of this elaborate tapestry begin to weave together to reveal a conspiracy much deeper and darker than we could've ever imagined!

It’s Rj’s turn to pick a title to scratch off of his to-be-read list. This week power through yet another amazing title from Vertigo, Unknown Soldier by Joshua Dysart. The story takes place in a war-torn Uganda in the early 2000’s and focuses on the crimes committed by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army. Trigger Warning: some of the subject matter of this book is fairly upsetting.

We talk about what it truly means to have emotions and navigate systemic issues present in all communities… even ones on the far edges of space.

It’s Adam’s turn to pick an all time favorite, and it just happens to be more Darwyn Cooke! We’re talking about the early 2000’s love letter to Will Eisner’s The Spirit. We can’t think of anyone more equipped to embody the (dare we say it) spirit of Will Eisner than the great Darwyn Cooke. And with Dave Steward and J. Bone backing him up, this book set the tone for comic visual storytelling that still persists today.

This week we're joined by our awesome friend, JenaLee @curlz_comics ! She brought us SHE HULK by Rainbow Rowell, with art by Roge Antonio, Luca Maresca, & Takeshi Miyazawa! This series is so full of heart, it's funny and heartbreaking, it's lighthearted at times and emotionally devastating at others. It's such a good "getting to know Jen" story (both Jens, in the case of this episode!)
