Now, as the CEO of startup Aimably, she’s applying her unique superpowers to help businesses grow by spending smarter and dramatically reducing their cloud costs.
In this episode, Dean Newlund and Claire Milligan discuss:
Private equity’s role in transforming and growing companiesThe expanding financial responsibilities of CTOsCost reduction and financial efficiency in software companiesLeadership continuity through acquisitions and turnoverAligning operations with long-term financial objectivesKey Takeaways:
Private equity helps companies transition from good to great by rigorously assessing core operations, eliminating inefficiencies, and focusing on mission-driven growth.Successful CTOs in private equity contexts must adopt a financial mindset, overseeing budgets, cost management, and return on investment for technology spending.Evaluating every role within a team based on adaptability and alignment with evolving business priorities is essential for CTOs managing acquisitions.Companies preparing for potential acquisition can benefit from acting as though they are selling, which enhances operational efficiency and scalability.Cloud infrastructure spending can significantly impact profitability, so companies should regularly audit and optimize their cloud costs."The whole goal of private equity is to take a good company and make it great by examining everything as an opportunity to stop, reset, re-evaluate, and make sure you’re not wasting time or resources on things that aren’t core to your values or mission, driving much more success out of the same core architecture.” — Claire Milligan

About Kerry Robinson:
Growing up, Kerry Robinson wanted to be the Prime Minister or a CEO. Fortunately for the world of AI, his career path never led him to Downing Street. An Oxford-trained physicist with a Master's in Artificial Intelligence, Kerry excels in turning complex tech into practical business solutions. As VP of Conversational AI at Waterfield Tech, he puts his 20+ years of experience to work leading their R&D team, enhancing business interactions through advanced chatbot and voice strategies, and reshaping the way they connect with customers. Welcome to the brighter, smarter, stronger side of AI. Kerry may have arrived first, but he’s committed to fostering the innovation that allows others to join him.
In this episode, Dean Newlund and Kerry Robinson discuss:
AI leadership in business transformationAI’s role in streamlining customer serviceGenerative AI’s expanding capabilities and automationEthical challenges and bias in AI systemsThe future of AI from general intelligence to superintelligenceKey Takeaways:
Contact centers should focus on problem-solving, not just customer engagement – AI helps streamline customer service, reducing the need for human interaction by addressing root problems instead of just managing calls.AI can outperform humans in specific tasks – In fields like radiology, AI is already more effective than humans at detecting issues like breast cancer, raising questions about human-AI collaboration.Generative AI improves through continuous training and feedback – AI models, like those used in customer service, can analyze conversations, learn from mistakes, and optimize themselves for better performance.Bias in AI models is inevitable and influenced by human decisions – Generative AI systems, like ChatGPT, are shaped by the biases of their human trainers, which affects the objectivity of the results."The most important human task we have is to ask the right questions and have really good discussions with each other about [AI].” — Kerry Robinson

About Dr. Chris Fuzie:
Dr. Chris Fuzie, Ed.D., M.A.OL., is a leadership consultant, trainer, college professor, and author specializing in behavior-based leadership and followership dynamics. He holds a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership, along with a Master’s and Bachelor’s in the same field, blending academic insights with practical applications. With over 29 years in law enforcement, Dr. Fuzie has led various high-stakes teams and continues to apply his expertise to consulting and training organizations. His innovative concepts, including the Liminal Leadership Model, challenge traditional leadership paradigms by emphasizing the simultaneous roles of leader and follower.
In this episode, Dean Newlund and Dr. Chris Fuzie discuss:
The convergence of leadership and followershipLiminal leadership and transitional rolesBehavioral consistency in organizationsDefining leadership at different organizational levelsEnsuring organizational consistency and performanceKey Takeaways:
Individuals frequently switch between leading and following, and success often requires balancing responsibilities to both superiors and subordinates. The key to successful leadership and followership is focusing on common, actionable behaviors like humility, integrity, and decisiveness, rather than fixating on formal roles.Organizations should focus on identifying specific, measurable behaviors that align with their goals, ensuring that these behaviors can be taught and evaluated across teams.Strategic leaders may focus on overarching traits like integrity, while mid-level managers and operational teams prioritize different sets of behaviors relevant to their tasks.By encouraging consistent behavior across all levels of the organization, companies can create a more unified culture and better performance outcomes."It’s not an either-or...most people think you're either a leader or a follower. However, now we have situations where people are leading and following simultaneously.” — Dr. Chris Fuzie

About Robb Munger:
Robb Munger, founder of Exodus Place, advocates for transitional housing for homeless men. With a finance background, Munger built a leading financial firm in manufactured housing before joining the board of Guiding Light Mission. There, he revitalized a struggling rescue mission and converted a former state corrections facility into Michigan’s largest non-governmental transitional housing.
A former Army Officer, Munger’s dedication to service is evident in his philanthropic work and community development efforts. His collaboration with the Salvation Army and Goodwill in a small American town highlights an innovative approach to homelessness, demonstrating the impact of combining compassion with action. Under his leadership, this initiative showcases the power of collaborative community efforts in making a real difference.
In this episode, Dean Newlund and Robb Munger discuss:
Homelessness and its root causesThe impact of mindset shifts on life outcomesNonprofit leadership and social changeSupporting communities and social responsibilityBenefits of empathy in leadershipKey Takeaways:
Treating homeless individuals like employees, with responsibility and respect, can drastically reduce recidivism rates, as shown by Exodus Place’s drop from 45-50% to just 1%.The most significant factor in solving homelessness is addressing personal issues first, like mental health and addiction, rather than simply providing housing.Emotional intelligence and asking deeper, upstream questions can reveal underlying issues leading to homelessness, like trauma or addiction, which allows for more effective intervention.Building a supportive organizational culture focused on love, compassion, and accountability helps empower both the individuals being served and the staff or volunteers providing aid."If you treat everybody as a person, as an individual, and you are with them when you are with them, it makes a big difference.” — Robb Munger

With an emphasis on the organization, Margie works with senior leaders and leadership teams to become cohesive, high-performing teams – which translates to high performance among their own teams.
In this episode, Dean Newlund and Margie Oleson discuss:
The gap between knowing and practicing leadershipTeam cohesion and communicationEnhancing meetings for better productivity and cultureLeadership's impact on company culture and performanceThe importance of openly discussing behaviors and accountabilityKey Takeaways:
Leadership development is a company’s most important investment, as strong leaders drive success and influence everyone else in the organization.A lack of alignment in leadership teams creates silos, miscommunication, and dysfunction, which can be resolved by ensuring top teams share and communicate the same goals.Ineffective meetings waste resources and signal larger issues, but addressing root causes like politics, fear of missing out, and silos leads to a cultural and productivity shift.Leadership sets the tone for the organization; when senior leaders fail to model alignment and transparency, it trickles down, creating a culture of mediocrity and disengagement that stifles progress and innovation."Culture is the outcome of how you're leading your decisions, the things you say, the things you don't say, and the things you reinforce.” — Margie Oleson

He is the founder of The Yielding Warrior and Northwest Fighting Arts/Portland Tai Chi Academy, where he emphasizes the transformative power of meditative and martial arts practices, particularly the concept of yielding. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Jeff Patterson discuss:
Managing stress through meditative practicesThe benefits of consistent meditation routinesIntegrating meditation and martial artsThe concept of yielding in physical and mental practicesWays to develop personalized meditation programsKey Takeaways:
Developing a daily meditation routine, even for 20 minutes, can significantly improve mental clarity, emotional stability, and overall well-being.Yielding in both physical and mental contexts—like moving with an opponent's force in martial arts or adapting one's mindset during conflicts—allows for strategic and effective responses with minimal resistance.Incorporating active meditation, such as focusing on the breath, or performing mindful movements, reinforces a continuous state of mindfulness and enhances formal meditation sessions.Regular practice of meditation and martial arts deepens self-connection, improving physical coordination, empathy, creativity, and leadership skills.Applying the concept of 'yielding'—embracing physical, mental, and emotional flexibility—improves interpersonal dynamics, leading to better conflict resolution and harmonious interactions."Meditation isn't meant to be a hobby we do once in a while. It's meant to be a way of life, and we want to try to integrate these practices into everything we do.” — Jeff Patterson

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Chris Dyer discuss:
Creating and maintaining a strong organizational culture in a hybrid work environment.Prioritizing employee well-being while maintaining high performance.Balancing between leadership and followership.Transparency, trust, and sense of belonging among remote workers.Misconceptions about leadership and the importance of empathy.Key Takeaways:
Culture is defined by the norms and unseen behaviors of how work gets done. The speakers emphasized that culture isn't just the visible aspects like company values, but the unwritten rules and expectations around things like decision-making, communication styles, and handling challenges.Prioritizing work-life balance and avoiding burnout is important for engagement. Leaders need to actively prevent overwork and create flexibility. Leadership can be developed from within through small, project-based opportunities. Giving employees a chance to lead temporary projects and tasks helps identify potential and build skills with less pressure.Transparency and daily check-ins are important for building a remote culture. Regular communication that is open about challenges and priorities helps remote employees feel informed and connected to decision-making.Rather than getting lost in technical details, leaders should help employees understand how innovations may shape their work overall so they can adapt mentally to ongoing disruption."Culture is the norms and behaviors and the unseen things that happen or don't happen when we get our work done.” — Chris Dyer
