According to legend, when the two suns eclipse on planet Bharron, once every thousand years, Lavender Castle can be seen in the desert. Captain Thrice and Walking Stick mount an expedition into the desert, but on the third day, the Captain loses Walking Stick when he falls into a gully. Alone in an endless desert, Thrice finds himself at the mercy of Dr. Agon.

The Alphans fall into the grasp of the despotic Mentor, an alien scientist trying to restore his ravaged world to its former glory. His biological computer requires the energy obtained from living brains to complete his task. When captured, Koenig is offered a choice: surrender the Alphans to a horrifying living death or face complete annihilation. Mentor's daughter Maya, who is a metamorph and from whom Mentor has concealed his actions, may be able to aid the Alphans.

Whilst out in the desert Tex Tucker finds and shelters an Indian boy and is rewarded with four magic feathers by the boy's grandfather. Two of the feathers make his dog (Dusty) and horse (Rocky) speak whilst the last two control Tex's two guns. Tex decides to create a town called Four Feather Falls and the townsfolk make him Sheriff.

Fireball XL5 intercepts a missile launched at Earth. Landing on Planet 46, Zodiac and Venus are captured by the villainous Subterrains – who promptly launch a second missile with Venus on board.

Whilst exploring a bizarre asteroid, Koenig is detained and replaced by a double which directs Alpha to direct most of its energy at the asteroid. Some of the crew react negatively at his double's dictatorial behaviour.

Torchy's rocket arrives in Topsy Turvy Land, and he tries to convince Pom-Pom and the toys to return to Earth, but they decline. Flopsy, the ragdoll, complains about her lack of stuffing, so Torchy convinces Pom-Pom to donate some of her fur.

Samina disappears, Haldane resigns from the force to join the Pyrists and a power struggle amongst the priests leads to a third death at the Temple. Then a witness comes forward who claims that Haldane has murdered Samina, and Podly is forced to issue a warrant for Haldane's arrest as the Pyrists prepare for the Day of Immolation – the end of the world!

Pyrist priest Tendall Kalike dies by spontaneous combustion during a ceremony at the Pyrist Temple and the event is witnessed by Took on her first visit to the Temple as a Seeker. Brogan and Castle search for evidence that points to Kalike's death being homicide and suspicion falls on fellow priest Nevik Brok. Teamed with Podly's daughter Samina, Haldane goes undercover at the Pyrist Temple to discover the truth.
