  • Ever wonder if you’re feeding your dog the diet nature intended? In this episode, I explain why dogs are natural-born meat eaters and challenge some widespread misconceptions about what your dog should be eating (even those your vet might be promoting).

Dogs descend directly from wolves, which are obligate carnivores with physiology designed for a meat-centric diet. From their sharp, pointed teeth (which are ideal for tearing flesh) to their highly acidic digestive systems (which effortlessly break down meat and bones), every aspect of a dog’s anatomy screams “carnivore.” Unfortunately, modern feeding practices usually ignore this biological reality, with many dogs consuming grain-filled kibble that doesn’t align with their body’s demands.

Our German Shepherd, Rib Eye, thrives on a raw meat diet. His meals consist of muscle meat, organs, bones, and occasional extras like egg yolks, raw milk kefir, and even the stomach contents of prey animals. The results of this diet are clear as day: a shiny coat, clean teeth without brushing, and boundless energy. This stands in stark contrast to many kibble-fed dogs, which suffer from obesity, dental issues, and chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer.

If you care about your dog’s well-being, it’s time to question the status quo. Feeding a raw meat diet may be more costly and time-consuming, but the benefits to your companion’s health are undeniable. Let’s rethink what’s truly best for our four-legged friends and align their diets with what nature intended.

    In this episode:

    00:00 - Intro

00:40 - Dogs as carnivores: Ancestry and physiology

01:45 - Why vets recommend kibble

03:30 - Feeding Rib Eye: Our raw diet experience

06:20 - Benefits of raw feeding vs. kibble

08:40 - Common misconceptions about dogs’ diets

10:30 - Health crisis in pets: Obesity and chronic diseases

12:15 - Kibble ingredients and why they're harmful

14:30 - The cost and practicality of raw feeding

15:20 - Conclusion: Think for yourself, question the status quo

  • Can changing your diet transform your mental health? In this episode, I explore the profound connection between nutrition and emotional well-being through the inspiring journey of health advocate and author Josh Noland. Overcoming depression and physical inactivity, Noland reclaimed his life by embracing mindful eating, meditation and strength training.

By making small, sustainable changes — like swapping processed snacks for whole fruits and prioritizing protein intake — he significantly improved both his mental and physical health. His story underscores the foundational role of mental health in overall wellness, influencing our motivation to make healthier choices and maintain beneficial habits. Simple practices such as walking after meals not only stabilize blood sugar but also enhance mood, demonstrating how accessible actions can lead to substantial benefits.

During our conversation, we also talk about the importance of home cooking for controlling ingredient quality and supporting optimal health, contrasting it with the pitfalls of processed foods and restaurant meals laden with unhealthy fats and additives.

With his upcoming cookbook, Noland aims to make nutritious eating both accessible and enjoyable. His journey serves as a compelling reminder that taking ownership of your health doesn’t have to begin with drastic overhauls — it can start with manageable steps that lead to lasting change.

  • With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many of us are gearing up to prepare the perfect holiday feast. But before you grab just any turkey from the supermarket, consider opting for a pasture-raised bird. They have better fat profiles, more nutrients, and superior flavor compared to their factory-farmed counterparts. Plus, pasture-raised turkeys are often raised via regenerative farming practices that benefit the planet.

In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I explain why the way a turkey is raised directly impacts its nutritional value, and how conventional farming practices can lead to birds full of inflammatory omega-6 fats. By contrast, pasture-raised turkeys that forage naturally have a more balanced omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, which reduces inflammation and promotes overall health. Additionally, these birds are richer in vitamins and minerals due to their varied diet of grass and insects, making them a far healthier option for your holiday table.

Plus, I’ll tell you what we’ve learned since we started raising our own slow-growing turkeys here at the Kummer Homestead. From having full control over their diet and lifestyle to seeing the direct impact on their health, it’s been an eye-opening journey.

If you’re looking for a more flavorful, nutrient-dense bird this Thanksgiving — and one that aligns with your values around health and sustainability — this episode is for you. Join me for a conversation about the benefits of ethical farming, and how the choices we make around food can influence both our health and our environment.

    In this episode:

    00:00 - Intro

    00:18 - Why choose a pasture-raised turkey?

01:34 - The health benefits of pasture-raised turkeys

    03:35 - Ethical reasons for choosing pasture-raised

  • When you commit to improving your health — whether it’s through diet, exercise, or lifestyle changes — you often find yourself at odds with the people closest to you. For example, when I made the switch to paleo over a decade ago, it put a serious strain on my relationship with my wife. I cut out entire food groups overnight, convinced it was the best way forward for our health. But without explaining my reasons or considering her perspective, it nearly pushed us to the brink.

In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I sit down with relationship coach Bates to discuss the often-overlooked impact that health and lifestyle changes can have on relationships. Bates shares similar stories from his clients and his own life, revealing how making drastic changes (even with the best of intentions) can create unexpected friction with those you love.

During our conversation, we talk about the importance of setting boundaries, how being overly accommodating to your partner can lead to a buildup of resentment, and why it’s critical that you refrain from imposing your beliefs on the people around you.

Whether you’re dealing with disagreements over food choices with a partner, managing family expectations, or struggling to maintain your health goals amid social pressures, this episode is filled with practical tips and insights on how to navigate those tensions while staying true to your values. Tune in for an eye-opening discussion on the intersection of health and relationships and how to maintain balance in both.

03:40 - Health goals vs. relationship friction

06:00 - Personal story: Paleo diet and relationship challenges

    07:45 - How over-agreeableness can damage relationships

  • Have you ever noticed how on some days, powering through a tough workout or jumping into the freezing water of a cold plunge feels almost effortless, while on others, it’s as if your ability to push through discomfort has vanished? It’s not always just a matter of motivation or willpower. Low testosterone can directly impact both your physical and mental performance, making it more difficult to stay focused and deal with hormetic stressors like extreme temperatures and intense activity.

Despite my relatively healthy lifestyle, my testosterone levels have always been less than optimal. In other words, my levels are consistently on the lower end of normal, which means there are times when I struggle to maintain the drive to push myself in the gym, or when I suffer from mental fatigue that makes it harder to see tough projects through to completion.

So in this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I share my personal journey of battling fluctuating testosterone levels and explain what I’ve learned over the years about how to increase testosterone naturally, why it’s so important for your overall health, and how to recognize the low testosterone symptoms that could be holding you back.

The good news is that making the right lifestyle changes, getting proper nutrition, and using the right supplements can help support your hormone production. Unfortunately, testosterone production is a multi-level biological process, so these interventions don’t work for everyone. Still, they’re worth trying before turning to more serious options like hormone replacement therapy.

If you’ve been struggling to maintain the energy and focus you once had, or if you’re finding it harder to push through discomfort, it might be time to take a closer look at your testosterone levels. Understanding the role testosterone plays in both your mental and physical resilience is key to unlocking better performance and well-being. Tune in to this episode to learn how to recognize the signs of low T, as well as what you can do today to start addressing the problem.

    In this episode:

02:25 - My experiments with testosterone levels

  • Many of us go through life in a state of constant distraction and stress, unable to break free from the pressure that modern living places on our mental health. Whether it’s struggling with decision fatigue, anxiety, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the constant stream of information, finding calm seems harder than ever. That’s where meditation comes in; it can be a powerful tool to rewire your brain and help you manage these challenges in a healthier way.

In this episode, I sit down with Ariel Garten, a neuroscientist, psychotherapist, and the founder of Muse, a brain-sensing headband that makes meditation more accessible by providing real-time feedback on brain activity. Muse allows users to see how their mind responds during meditation, giving them the tools to understand whether they’re truly focused or letting distractions take over. This feedback helps meditators stay present and progressively refine their practice, which can be especially valuable for beginners or anyone struggling to stay consistent with meditation.

Garten shares fascinating insights into how meditation goes beyond just relaxation, explaining its role in actually reshaping how our brain processes stress. She dives into how regular practice can reduce reactivity to stressful stimuli — those automatic, emotional responses that lead to frustration or anger — by strengthening parts of the brain responsible for emotional regulation.

In other words, meditation isn’t about suppressing emotions, but about being more aware of them and having the space to choose a better response.

One of the most interesting points we discuss is how even short, daily meditation sessions can have a profound impact on overall mental well-being. It doesn’t require hours of practice to see results. According to studies, just a few minutes of mindfulness each day can improve focus, reduce anxiety, and increase emotional awareness. Garten highlights how building this habit creates a ripple effect, where emotional control leads to better decision-making, healthier relationships, and a greater sense of overall calm.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed or struggled to maintain a sense of balance in a world filled with distractions, this episode offers valuable tools to help you regain control and become more present in your daily life. Whether you’re a seasoned meditator or just starting out, Garten’s practical advice and the innovative Muse technology can help you take the first step toward mental clarity and emotional stability.

  • Are you finding that your HbA1c levels are elevated despite being on a low-carb, ketogenic, or even carnivore diet? Recently, my HbA1c test came back at 5.7 (just under the prediabetic range), and I knew something was off; after all, I’ve been following a relatively low-carb lifestyle for years, so there’s no way my blood sugar should be high enough to suggest prediabetes.

In consulting with carnivore diet expert and medical doctor Shawn Baker, I learned that healthy red blood cells that live longer than average can actually skew HbA1c readings, making it appear as though you have higher blood glucose than you do. This happens because the longer your red blood cells live, the more glucose has time to attach to hemoglobin, artificially inflating your HbA1c levels. (Conversely, shorter-lived red blood cells can lead to lower readings, even in those with high blood sugar.)

In this episode, I break down the science of the HbA1c test and explain how factors like red blood cell lifespan, iron deficiency, anemia, and other health conditions can all affect your hemoglobin A1c results.

Even if you have healthy blood sugar and no signs of diabetes, your HbA1c might still be higher due to these factors. In my case, despite my elevated HbA1c, my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) showed average blood glucose levels between 85 and 89 mg/dL — well within the normal range.

    In this episode:

    00:00:00 - Intro & elevated HBA1C discovery

00:01:15 - Investigating the cause of high HBA1C

00:02:54 - Understanding HBA1C and red blood cells

  • Did you know that your biological age can tell a different story than your chronological age? From a health perspective, it’s not just about the number of years you’ve lived, but how your body has aged at the DNA level. Understanding your biological age can reveal how lifestyle choices and environmental factors have impacted your long-term health and longevity.

In this episode, I’m joined by Hannah Went from TruDiagnostic, a company that specializes in biological age testing and epigenetics, helping people gain deeper insights into their epigenome and overall health.

Went breaks down the science of aging, highlighting how lifestyle decisions affect up to 80% of your health outcomes, compared to the 20% dictated by genetics. Whether it’s stress from childhood, diet, or daily habits, these factors influence your body’s biological age and its vulnerability to diseases.

Using my own biological age test as a case study, we explore how it’s possible to age biologically faster than your chronological age, and what can be done to slow this process. Went also delves into epigenetic clocks like the OMICmAge, which assess gene expression to predict disease risks and mortality. Understanding these markers allows you to take a proactive approach to health, making preventative lifestyle adjustments before problems arise.

We also discuss the practical side of biological age testing, including privacy concerns and the importance of regular testing to guide healthier choices.

This episode provides actionable advice on how to take control of your aging process and improve both your lifespan and healthspan. If you want to understand how to better manage your biological age and epigenome, don’t miss this deep dive into the science of aging and longevity.

  • Your gut is home to an entire ecosystem of microorganisms that silently shape your digestion, immune function and overall health. Most of us barely think about it, but this hidden universe inside us plays a vital role in our well-being.

I recently explored my own gut microbiome using Jona, an AI-powered platform that goes far beyond typical gut tests.

Jona offers personalized insights based on cutting-edge research, showing how your microbiome could be impacting everything from inflammation to metabolic health. I was surprised to discover that my gut contains 246 different microorganisms, including the pathogen Clostridium perfringis. While that sounded alarming at first, Jona helped me understand that, in the context of my lifestyle — which includes raising livestock and spending a lot of time outdoors — it’s not a cause for concern. More importantly, Jona highlighted that my gut’s bacteria have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which may explain why my CRP levels are consistently low.

One of the most fascinating aspects of my results is how they align with my animal-based diet. Most of the probiotics in my system come from fermented dairy products like kefir, reflecting how my dietary choices have shaped the microorganisms living inside me. Jona’s personalized approach even helped confirm why I sometimes experience discomfort with raw milk, revealing that my gut lacks certain lactose-digesting bacteria.

If you’re interested in gaining deeper insights into your own gut health, Jona could be a game-changer. The platform links your microbiome data with real scientific studies, offering actionable recommendations tailored to your lifestyle and health goals. Make sure to use code Michael50 for 50% off your own gut analysis and take control of your gut health.

  • After wrapping up the first season of the Primal Shift Podcast, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey so far: 60 episodes packed with insights on how to bridge the gap between ancestral living and modern demands. This season has been about laying the foundation of a healthy lifestyle, covering everything from nutrition and exercise to stress management and reconnecting with nature.

If you’re new to the podcast, I highly recommend diving into Episodes 3 to 10, where I discuss the core principles that guide everything we do here.

One of the highlights of this season has been the incredible guests who’ve shared their expertise. For instance, in Episode 39 I had an eye-opening conversation with Dr. Sean Baker about the carnivore diet, and in Episode 43 I talked to former Navy SEAL Dr. Kirk Parsley about optimizing sleep.

Each episode offers something unique — whether it’s practical tips or deep dives into the science behind health and wellness. I’ve also covered topics that are close to my heart, like why I transitioned away from keto after three years (Episode 11) and the importance of growing your own food (Episode 56).

I’ve particularly enjoyed sharing my personal experiences, like how I maintain a strong and lean physique (Episode 12) and the wellness practices I’ve adopted to stay balanced amidst the chaos of modern life (Episode 58). These episodes aren’t just about theory — they’re about the actionable steps I’ve taken to align my lifestyle with the principles I believe in.

Looking ahead to season two, I’m excited to mix things up with a combination of shorter, bite-sized episodes and more in-depth interviews. One week you might get a quick 10-minute episode focused on a specific topic, and the next week, we’ll feature a longer, more detailed conversation with an expert. I’ll also be bringing my wife Kathy on board more frequently to share her perspective on homeschooling, homesteading, and how we’re making our lifestyle work as a family. Her insights add a different dimension to the podcast, offering a more rounded view of how we navigate this journey together.

Another thing I’m really looking forward to is giving you more behind-the-scenes looks at how we live day-to-day. I’ll be sharing more about our approach to growing our own food, the challenges and rewards of homeschooling, and how we’re building resilience as a family.

I’m eager to continue this journey with you and appreciate all the feedback you’ve provided along the way. Your input helps shape the direction of the podcast, and I’m always interested in hearing what topics you’d like to explore next. If there’s anything specific you’d like to hear about in the next season, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Thanks for being a part of the Primal Shift community. Season 1 has been an incredible ride, and I can’t wait to see what Season 2 has in store for us all. Stay tuned, stay engaged, and let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible when we reconnect with our primal roots.

    #PrimalShift #OptimalHealth #AncestralLiving #Biohacking #PodcastRecap

  • Navigating a health journey can be challenging, especially when it involves significant dietary changes and their impact on family dynamics. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, my wife Kathy and I open up about our transition through various diets and how it affected our lives and relationship.

Our journey began when Kathy was diagnosed with prediabetes. We decided to cut out processed sugars, which seemed straightforward. But soon thereafter, I became interested in the Paleo diet and enthusiastically declared that we were switching to that significantly more restrictive dietary framework.

Kathy didn’t share my enthusiasm. Switching to Paleo meant eliminating staple foods like beans, rice, and lentils from our diet. She was born and raised in Costa Rica, where these foods are a central part of the cuisine, so I was essentially asking her to give up a number of beloved traditional dishes.

Despite our initial struggles, we adapted and learned to prepare Paleo-friendly versions of our favorite meals. Then, just when we thought we had it all figured out, I discovered keto and once again, we faced the challenge of another dietary overhaul.

This time, it meant cutting out even more carbs, including natural sweeteners and many of the ingredients Kathy had started using in her cooking.

Reflecting on this period, Kathy recalls how our son had stomach issues due to the high consumption of almond flour and almond milk, which were two common ingredients in our keto recipes. We eventually realized that while keto had its benefits, it wasn’t the ultimate solution for us. We moved towards a more nuanced approach, combining elements of Paleo and keto with a focus on ingredient quality and avoiding processed foods.

A pivotal moment came when I wanted to experiment with the carnivore diet. Having learned from past experiences, I approached this transition with more caution, suggesting a trial period rather than an immediate switch. This experiment taught us valuable lessons about the benefits of an animal-based diet while still incorporating seasonal fruits and the least toxic plants.

Kathy’s perspective on these changes has evolved, especially as she seeks information from other influencers and sources. For instance, she discovered that women tolerate cold exposure differently than men, leading us to adjust our cold plunge temperatures accordingly.

During our conversation, we also discuss the broader challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in modern society, such as the convenience of processed foods and the social pressure to conform. Kathy highlights the difficulties of preparing healthy meals and dealing with criticism at social gatherings.

Lastly, we touch on the rewarding yet demanding aspects of homesteading, including growing our own food and raising animals. While it’s not always easy, the benefits of fresh, homegrown produce and the satisfaction of self-sufficiency make it worthwhile.

Join us as we share our insights and strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the importance of adaptability, and the ongoing journey of discovering what works best for our family.

  • I used to be a major CrossFitter, spending multiple days per week in the box. But lately, I’ve been cutting back on CrossFit workouts and spending less time in the gym, instead prioritizing daily walks with the dog, manual labor around the homestead, and experimenting with innovative resistance training using X3 bands.

In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I’ll tell you about my current regimen and explain why I increasingly focus on balancing intense workouts with natural, ancestral practices.

I’ll also explain how I augment these practices with modern technology, like cold plunges and red light therapy, and how I use supplements like creatine, collagen, colostrum, and a limited number of plant-based products to help enhance my testosterone levels, support my gut health, bolster my athletic performance and improve my skin’s appearance.

  • What if I told you that lard could be the next big thing in skincare? Charles Mayfield, the founder of Farrow Skincare and a veteran in regenerative farming, says that because lard is so similar to human sebum (one of the skin’s natural oils), it can be an incredibly effective moisturizer that the skin readily absorbs, providing deep nourishment without exposing yourself to the harsh and dangerous chemicals typically found in commercial skincare products.

In this episode, he joins us to talk about how he discovered lard’s surprising benefits, as well as his journey from conceptualizing Farrow to launching it, highlighting the meticulous R&D process and the challenges of maintaining product integrity.

We also discuss the stark differences between industrially raised pork and pork from pastured pigs, emphasizing the health implications of each. The conversation explores the historical context of pig farming and how modern practices have drifted from traditional methods that prioritized animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

  • Outsourcing food production is not only foolish but downright irresponsible, considering how vital food is to our health and well-being. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I’ll explain why growing your own food — as opposed to blindly trusting faceless corporations with your nourishment — is crucial for truly healthy living.

In short, many staples of the standard American diet are produced in ways that deeply degrade their nutritional value (and in some cases, actually make the food harmful).

For example, store-bought chicken is often bathed in chlorine and contains high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from the birds’ diet, leading to inflammation in your body.

Pasteurized dairy, stripped of bioactive ingredients and beneficial bacteria through the pasteurization process, amounts to junk food.

Raw honey isn’t exempt either, as it’s often contaminated with microplastics and chemicals from plastic foundations and treatments used in commercial beekeeping.

Even the best store-bought pastured eggs have been washed in chemicals, and the porous eggshells can allow residues to seep into the eggs you consume.

Join me in this episode as I talk about how to get involved in growing your own food, including tips and practical steps you can take to start your journey towards a healthier, more self-sufficient lifestyle.

    In this episode:

    00:00 - Intro

01:25 - Outsourcing food production is foolish

    02:33 - The problem with store-bought eggs

05:27 - Issues with commercial chicken meat

09:07 - The truth about pasteurized dairy

11:22 - Hidden dangers in raw honey

    14:12 - Nutrient deficiencies in store-bought produce

16:28 - Practical tips for growing your own food

18:34 - How to connect with local farmers

  • In this episode I dive into the fascinating connection between diet and body odor, sharing personal anecdotes and scientific insights to help you understand how what you eat can influence how you smell.

There are two main types of sweat glands: eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands produce a watery, odorless sweat that helps regulate body temperature, while apocrine glands (found in areas like the armpits and groin) secrete a thicker fluid that’s rich in proteins and lipids. When the fluid produced by apocrine glands interacts with skin bacteria, it leads to body odor.

Diet can influence which glands are more active and how their secretions interact with your skin. Consuming a diet high in processed foods and sugars can lead to increased activity of apocrine glands, whereas a diet that’s rich in meat and low in processed foods supports a healthier skin microbiome (and thus, less smell). Plus, certain foods (like garlic and onions) can add sulfur compounds to sweat, exacerbating your BO.

In my personal experience and experiments, following an animal-based diet — combined with cutting out antibacterial soaps that can disrupt the skin’s microbiome — has reduced my body odor so significantly that I no longer have to wear deodorant. For those still needing a deodorant, I’ll share my experience with a natural, beef tallow-based deodorant from Nose to Tail that is effective and made from non-toxic ingredients.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone struggling with body odor or who is looking to understand the deeper connections between diet, bacteria, and personal hygiene.

  • My guest for this episode is Ben Salem, a real estate developer who stumbled into the EMF mitigation business out of concern for his kids’ health. Ben shares his journey from a worried parent to the founder of WaveBlock, a company dedicated to reducing harmful radiation from everyday devices.

WaveBlock is a sticker that you attach to your devices, which then works to disperse rather than block radiation, making it an effective and user-friendly solution for mitigating EMF exposure without completely disconnecting from modern conveniences.

Ben and I talk about the distinction between natural EMFs and the man-made ones that saturate our modern environment (including why this exposure is a growing concern), as well as the key differences between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation (and why the latter, despite being less understood, can still pose significant health risks).

Ben’s hands-on approach, including converting his office into a Faraday cage for testing, highlights the lengths he’s gone to ensure the effectiveness of his products. And his insight into how children are especially vulnerable to EMF exposure due to their thinner skulls is eye-opening.

If you’ve ever wondered about the invisible waves that permeate our lives and how to protect yourself and your loved ones, this episode is packed with valuable insights and practical advice.

And if you’re new to the topic, make sure to read my article about how EMFs impact your health for a deep dive into the science.

  • In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I sit down with CAROL Bike CEO Ulrich Dempfle to discuss the science and benefits behind Reduced Exertion High-Intensity Interval Training (REHIT), a fitness modality developed to provide the most effective workout in the shortest possible amount of time.

For example, the CAROL Bike gives you a full cardio workout in just eight minutes, focusing on two strategically-timed 20-second sprints. Dempfle explains how this is possible, detailing the science behind how REHIT induces glycogen mobilization and the release of key molecules that signal the body to build more mitochondria, thereby increasing aerobic capacity and overall fitness.

We also talk about Dempfle’s journey from working in the German automotive industry to healthcare, where he recognized the critical role of exercise in the prevention of injury and disease, as well as the challenge of getting people to commit to regular workouts.

Whether or not you decide to give CAROL a try, this episode provides a valuable introduction to the science and application of REHIT, with tips on how to leverage this ultra-efficient training strategy to optimize your health and wellness.

    About Ulrich Dempfle:
Dempfle is the CEO and co-founder of CAROL Bike. After graduating in mechanical engineering from Germany’s leading tech university, he worked with some of Europe’s top automobile manufacturers. From there he moved to London, where he pioneered the use of AI for operational efficiency within UK health services. After watching a BBC documentary on Reduced Exertion HIIT (REHIT), Ulrich realized its potential to be the most effective cardio workout. The problem? REHIT was only possible in a lab setting. So Ulrich co-founded CAROL and worked with the world’s leading exercise researchers to take REHIT out of the lab. 40 prototypes later, the world’s only REHIT exercise bike was launched.
