Jacki and Lyle are joined by the brilliant Karl Fielding. Karl is the Vice President MEA of Lyre’s Spirit Co., which rightly holds the title of being the producer of the finest range of non-alcoholic classic spirits the world has ever seen. Prior to his work with Lyre’s, he was the Trade Marketing Manager at William Grant & Sons/Jagermeister and the Group Category Director of ABI, and he has also previously held positions at Kellogg Company and the Heineken Company. Karl discusses his work at Lyre's and how he has always relished working with pubs and restaurants, and the people who work in the hospitality industry, particularly bartenders! He opens up about the challenges Lyre's has faced in introducing non-alcoholic drinks to the Middle Eastern market, with many of the countries Karl works in having never tasted the alcoholic versions of the spirits Lyre's are working with, meaning the non-alcoholic recipes many of the bartenders in these countries create are entirely new experiences for the consumer. Jacki and Karl discuss the importance of the consumer experience when it comes to drinking a non-alcoholic cocktail, with Karl pointing out that people who don't drink can often feel devalued relative to their alcohol-drinking peers when it comes to the calibre of drinks they are served. Lyle agrees that consumers of non-alcoholic drinks in pubs and restaurants would be prepared to pay prices that rival alcoholic cocktails if the taste, presentation and overall experienced matched that of the alcoholic equivalent, with Karl emphasising that this is very much part of the Lyre's message when it comes to the quality of the drinks they produce, the packaging the spirits arrive in, and the professionalism and skill of the bartenders who serve the drinks. Lyre's certainly have their biggest fan in Jacki, and Lyle may not be far behind!

In the latest episode of The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the brilliant Mark Barrett. Mark is the landlord and general manager of The Royal Standard, a wonderful pub in the heart of glorious Blackheath in southeast London. Mark also happens to have stopped drinking 3 years ago, making up one of the minority of pub landlords who are currently teetotal! Mark discusses his journey with alcohol so far, including how he decided to go all in on stopping drinking 3 years ago after realising the impact it was having on his life both at home and at work. He has since found he has far more energy while working the often intense job of running a successful pub, and that his home life has also improved as he is finding himself being more present with his wife and family. Jacki and Mark discuss the advent of alcohol-free options in pubs, and how this new area of the industry shows no signs of slowing down. Mark also discusses how he also changed his dietary habits upon stopping drinking, leading Lyle to ask for his bone broth recipe! Mark discusses how he thrives on routine, but emphasises that this way of doing things is something that very much works for him, and that he believes everyone should discover their own journey when it comes to alcohol and diet. Mark also discusses how he can see himself enjoying a nice glass of Malbec one day, but that in the meantime he feels he has at least 15 years to maximise his professional potential, and so plans to stick with this routine for the foreseeable future!

In the latest episode of The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle are delighted to be joined by the incredible David J. Greer. David is a 40+ year entrepreneur. At just 22, he joined a young software startup, stayed 20 years, becoming co-owner, while building the company into a global powerhouse. After selling out of that business, David took a break, commissioning a sailboat in the South of France and home schooling his three children for two years while sailing 5,000 miles across the Mediterranean! He is now a successful author and entrepreneurial coach, specialising in creating high performing and high growth mid-market businesses. Crucially for this podcast, David also helps entrepreneurs and businesspeople challenged with alcoholism or addiction. In a wide-ranging and poignant episode, David opens up about his own recovery journey, going from someone who would drunk upwards of 15 drinks a day to embarking on a 12-step recovery programme that has led to him remaining sober for over 15 years and counting. He talks to Lyle about the need for people to want to start their recovery for themselves, despite how important it can seem to use other people as motivation. David also speaks to the team about how he has only recently discovered a drive he always knew he had, and how his work has led him to connect with very high-performing individuals, one of whom is on a quest to become a 6-time Olympian! David also discusses the superb mantra of Task Master Spirit, or TMS for short, which he states he sometimes has to subdue for fear of doing too much in any one day, something which very much resonates with Jacki! He eloquently and correctly describes alcoholism as a mental health disease, referencing the medical name for the disease, Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), before stating that he hopes the judgement of people who suffer from this disease starts to become a thing of the past very soon. Lyle is devastates that there isn't time to discuss David and his family's sailing adventures, but there will definitely be time for that when David returns very soon!

On the latest episode of The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle discuss what it has been like so to make the podcast, and the wonderful feedback they have had so far. Lyle focusses on the idea of 'experiences' and how your approach to the idea of alcohol can either elevate or dampen these experiences over time. Jacki analyses how young people's outlook on drinking is markedly different to what it was like when she was that age! There is many a rant about the availability of water on nights out, but also plenty of praise for the innovators within the industry who are breaking the mould when it comes to low and non-alcoholic alternatives to the established names in the drinks industry. Particular mention is given to Lucky Saint, whose non-alcoholic beer is now a staple in pubs across the country, and the likes of Berczy Drinks and Impossibrew, whose appearances on Dragon's Den have caused a stir within the industry. Jacki and Lyle then take a look forward to some of the fantastic guests who will be appearing on the podcast very soon!

This week, Jacki and Lyle discuss recent comments made by certain experts and professionals within the hospitality industry that have highlighted how an increase in people doing 'Dry January' has led to lower performance figures than they expected, and how statements like these can set a dangerous precedent when it comes to the importance we place on drinking alcohol in pubs and restaurants. Lyle analyses how he feels these industry experts are paying attention to the wrong metrics considering the increasing desire by many pub-goers to engage in a non-alcoholic beer or two at social events, even going as far as to say they might see more impressive numbers if they analysed these stats in detail as non-alcoholic drinks can be consumers at a slightly quicker rate! Jacki discusses how pubs, restaurants, and the hospitality industry at large need to do far better when it comes to providing a range of non-alcoholic drinks including wines and spirits, mentioning a landlord friend of hers who himself doesn't drink, but acknowledges that the range they offer at his pub could be better. There is a note of hope to end on, as Lyle opens up about his recent experiences in pubs where non-alcoholic beers like Lucky Saint are now increasingly available on draft, with the hope that this only becomes more prominent in the months and years to come!

This week on The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle are joined by friend and former guest of The Rest Is PR - the brilliant Ben Williams. Ben is the Founder & Managing Director of Kiln, a digital transformation agency, and he has previously held positions at Apple, InMobi and Channel 4! Ben is also 5 years sober, having stepped away from alcohol around the same time as he founded Kiln. In an open and incredibly informative episode, Ben opens up about his struggles with alcohol in the past, including how problems with alcohol have sadly led to friends and family members passing away. He discusses how his decision to become sober after years of experiencing a problematic relationship with alcohol occurred at a crucial time in his life, where he had a choice of which direction to head in. Ben talks to Jacki and Lyle about how beneficial the choice he made at that time has been for his life since. He also implores people to have the conversation and decide what is best for themselves, emphasising that he stills goes to the pub with his friends, many of whom still drink. Lyle, Jacki and Ben finish the episode on the message that it is important not to judge people for their choices either way, and how important it is to be kind to one another when it comes to the very complex topic of alcohol.
TW: This podcast discusses issues surrounding the subject of alcoholism, mental health, and family bereavement. Listener discretion is advised.

This week on The Rest Is Alcohol, Jacki and Lyle are joined by the wonderful Bryony Purdue. Bryony is a cabaret performer, host, and producer, as well as being a professional singer and recording artist in her own right, with a new album on the way and having previously been a Jools Holland nominee for 'Best Up and Coming Artist' at the 2022 Boisdale Music Awards. Bryony has toured with the highly regarded Fleetwood Mac band, Transatlantic Rumours, which is where the story of her Dry January begins in this fantastic first official episode of the podcast. Bryony discusses why she decided to embark on Dry January this year, opening up on the reasons she has stopped drinking alcohol in the past, as well as a recent ADHD diagnosis that she discovered can be linked back to a particular relationship with alcohol. Bryony also discusses the benefits this decision has had on her work, as she has become more sharp and focused during gigs as a result, before discussing with Jacki and Lyle the difficulties associated with Dry January and other breaks from alcohol when it comes to social situations. Jacki labels Bryony the 'Queen Of Soho', which it's hard to argue with, and Bryony discusses a brilliant book she has been reading called 'This Naked Mind' by the exceptional Annie Grace. A brilliant, open, and engaging first episode with a truly wonderful guest!
