  • This episode’s a gem—Peter and comedian Tom Rhodes join forces for a co-episode airing on both their podcasts recorded in Amsterdam! It’s two storytellers swapping tales about travel, comedy, and the chaos of life.

Tom reflects on his time hosting a Dutch late-night show (as Kevin Masters, of all names), fumbling through cultural quirks, and falling in love with Amsterdam. Meanwhile, Peter reflects on how seeing Tom take the leap to live abroad inspired his own journey to Amsterdam, turning a pipe dream into a reality.

Then there’s his Hooray for Humanity vibe. Even with all the chaos in the world, Tom’s still finding reasons to believe in people. He draws inspiration from Voltaire’s Candide, which is about someone stumbling through the mess of life but holding onto hope. That’s kind of Tom’s whole thing: seeing the mess, laughing at it, and still loving humanity.

    They dig into:

The beauty of just trying to live a chill, happy life no matter where you’re from. The magic of Amsterdam as a tiny village with the energy of a global city. How humor (and tattoos) can cut through cultural walls and bring people together. Humor crosses every border, and travel opens you up to just how similar we all are. Shut-the-heck-up day in Bali? Genius. We should all try it.

Tom’s vibe from his solo show Hooray for Humanity shines throughout—hopeful, funny, and unapologetically real. It’s a conversation about finding joy and connection, even when the world’s a mess.

If you’re into wild stories, smart humor, and some honest reflection, this one’s for you. Keep an eye out for Tom’s upcoming special The Ripest Zebras and dive into Peter’s work—tattoos, creativity, and all.

Two voices, one great conversation. Listen now.

  • Not since Gutenberg's printing press has one human being's inventions improved the quality of life for people as much as Apple co-founder and principle creator Steve Wozniak.

Fortunately for me the Woz loves jokes, humor and comedy in general so after sending him several heart felt e-mails requesting to chat with him he agreed, so last week while I was performing in San Francisco I drove down to Cupertino to record this conversation while him. This conversation was recorded at the Mandarin Oriental restaurant where Steve asked me to meet him. There is pleasant violin based classic music playing in the background because the owner politely delinked my request to turn off the music.

Steve Wozniak is not only a creative genius who has improved human life more than any other human being in the last 300 years, he also loves and cherishes humor and the story tellers who create the jokes.

He is exciting to talk to because he thinks so fast and can convey complicated information in a very simple way to be understood universally.

His genius is not exclusively bound to his inventions that will lead the world to higher plains of consciousness and communications but it is the basic fact that he is a good person who genuinely cares about helping dreamer people like me wherever he can. It is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Steve Wozniak!

Intro song: Cutting Room (Hot Pants) – Oceanliners

Movie clip from YouTube: Her TRAILER 1 (2013) - Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson Movie HD

Movie clip from YouTube: Klaatu's warning

Recorded in Cupertino, CA. January 2014.

[Original broadcast date: Jan 28 2015]

This is the output of OpenAI ChatGTP prompting to summarize the transcription:

This conversation with Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, touches on humor, technology, and personal philosophies. Key highlights:

Humor and Pranks Wozniak loves jokes and pranks, sharing stories about altering iPads, high school stunts, and making counterfeit $2 bills. Humor keeps him optimistic and happy. Thoughts on Technology AI Concerns: Wozniak shares concerns about AI surpassing human control, aligning with fears from Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. He believes humanity’s dependence on machines began with the Industrial Revolution. Privacy Advocacy: As a founder of the EFF, he champions internet freedom and user privacy, criticizing surveillance and censorship. Creativity Tools: Wozniak celebrates how Apple products empower creativity, describing computers as a "bicycle for the mind." Personal Insights Happiness: Optimism, humor, and calmness define his outlook. He avoids stress and focuses on enjoying life. Philosophy: Maintain youthful ideals, accept differences, and foster positive relationships. Closing Wisdom Stay curious, embrace creativity, and be kind to others. Humor and innovation are central to living a fulfilling life.

Wozniak’s blend of playfulness, intellect, and optimism offers both insight and inspiration.

  • Hey everybody, I’m back with my best friend Ashna, and we kick things off with a funny bit about how I’ve been confidently using the word "conversate" for years—only to find out it’s not even a real word.

I just had an incredible week performing at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at the MGM. It felt like old times, hanging out with comedians between sets, watching each other perform every night, and laughing our heads off during the day. There’s something about those moments offstage that makes the comedy world feel like a family again.

We also get into one of my favorite topics: thrift store treasures. We reminisce about some killer finds over the years, and Ashna expresses her appreciation for my trusty blender that’s still going strong after 30 years. We talk about how much cooler it feels to own something with history.

It’s a fun, laid-back episode where we cover everything from comedy and quality vintage gear to the small pleasures in life.

---- Please share your thrift store treasures on our Patreon page! ----

So kick back, relax, and join us for some laughs and good conversation. Enjoy the show!

He also shares a wild mix of Muay Thai boxing, snake charmer music, and the calmness of the Thai people, which he says is a world away from the aggression in Los Angeles. We also talk about the symbolism of turtles in myths and how they connect to life’s mysteries. And, of course, we finish with a reality check on social media and how it affects real joy. • In this Smart Bestie episode, it's just me and my smart best friend Ashna Rodjan. Seriously, what a week—there was an attempted assassination on Donald Trump and we lost the comedy legend, Bob Newhart. I grew up listening to Bob Newhart's records. His long-form storytelling was pure genius. I still laugh thinking about his bit as the night watchman at the Empire State Building during King Kong's climb.

We dive into the Trump situation too. It's wild to think about how this might shake up American politics and the upcoming election. Ashna, with her background in cognitive psychology, brings up some fascinating points about how appearance plays such a big role in politics. It's funny how Americans and Europeans have such different approaches when it comes to picking leaders.

I share a pretty intense story from my recent road trip where I picked up a homeless woman off the side of the road. Not something I'd normally do, but she looked like she needed help. Ashna talks about her own adventure, or misadventure, as a new driver navigating the streets of LA.

We wrap things up by reflecting on how important it is to be kind and understanding, especially in these divided times. We talk about how even small acts of democracy in our daily lives can make a big difference.

  • In this Smart Talk episode, I sit down with the hilarious Shanti Charan. We dive into her comedy journey, starting out at The Punchline Comedy Club in San Francisco. We also chat about the unique vibes of Florida versus California audiences and how the world's chaos sneaks into our jokes.

Shanti's got some wild stories from teaching in prisons. She talks about the challenges inmates face, the weird dynamics of masculinity and race behind bars, and those tiny bits of freedom we often take for granted. Plus, we geek out over our favorite prison movies, swap stories about food, and laugh about handling the toughest crowds.

We also find time to discuss Shanti’s love for tacos, her take on The Dark Knight, and her thoughts on heteronormativity. We wrap things up with some deep thoughts on personal growth, the power of gratitude, and the quirks of social media.

Tune in for laughs, insights, and a whole lot of fun!

  • Welcome to Tom Rhodes Smart Camp! Hooray, it's the first day of summer, my favorite season! I’m in my apartment with a massive, seeded watermelon from Sprouts. What’s with the obsession with seedless watermelons?

I’ve been home for a few days between gigs in Minneapolis and San Jose. My suitcase is open, laundry is done, and I’m half a watermelon down. Remember when we thought swallowing watermelon seeds would make one grow in your stomach? Bring it on!

After two rough summers, I’m feeling great and ready for joy. Did you know frisbees started as pie plates in the 1870s, and popsicles were invented by an 11-year-old in 1905?

I just spent quality time with my mom in Florida. She’s 85, sharp, and has an amazing front porch. She beat me at Scrabble twice and uses hilarious expressions like “up the ding wat?” and “out the wazoo.”

One of my oldest friends, Kodak, now called Dak after Kodak sued him, took us out on his boat. We explored swamp canals straight out of The Princess and the Frog.

I hit Atlanta’s Punchline and Sarasota’s McCurdy’s, taking my mom along. She got to see the full scope of being a comedian. Then, I had a blast in Minneapolis with friends, including a Prince-themed Twins game.

I’m excited about my upcoming trip to Oregon, hitting Eugene, Portland, and Pendleton for a rodeo and a Charlie Crockett concert.

Remember to love yourself, practice positive self-talk, and be grateful. Here’s to peak summer joy and hooray for humanity!

Ric discusses his background in Brussels and his connections to Los Angeles, where his father worked as a prop master in the film industry.

  • This episode of Smart Books & Movies reflects Tom's musings on love and nostalgia. He begins by sharing his recent benefit performance in Washington, D.C., and a heartwarming anecdote about his aunt's banana bread. Visiting his father's grave at Arlington National Cemetery reconnects him with poignant memories.

From there, Tom transitions to a book report on Richard Ben Cramer's Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's Life. He provides fascinating details about DiMaggio's baseball career, family background, and personality, focusing on how he was often perceived as a distant and private figure. Despite his detachment from teammates and the public, Joe upheld a high standard as a Yankee, often emphasizing the importance of perfection both on and off the field.

The most captivating part of the episode involves Joe DiMaggio's relationship with Marilyn Monroe. Tom discusses how their love story began, starting with their first date and evolving into marriage. Despite Monroe being late for their initial meeting and her reluctance toward dating athletes, they quickly became an iconic couple. However, their relationship was fraught with challenges due to Joe's controlling nature and Marilyn's career ambitions. He details how Joe struggled to accept Marilyn's stardom, culminating in a violent argument after she filmed the famous subway grate scene in The Seven Year Itch. This incident led Marilyn to divorce Joe just a few weeks later.

Tom continues by highlighting Joe's unwavering loyalty even after their divorce, describing how Joe intervened when Marilyn was involuntarily placed in a psychiatric ward, ensuring she received proper care. Marilyn later reconnected with Joe, and the two planned to remarry. Tragically, Marilyn died before this could happen. Tom narrates Joe's heartbreaking grief at her funeral and his commitment to placing roses at her grave twice a week until he passed away.

Tom concludes by reflecting on Joe DiMaggio's lasting love for Marilyn Monroe, emphasizing how his devotion transcended the tumultuous aspects of their relationship and the external pressures of stardom. He leaves listeners with the powerful lesson that love can endure despite hardships, providing hope and strength even in the most challenging times.
