Well well well, we find ourselves here again at the end of the road. We've been gazing back at this strange group of nominees and sometimes it's hard to see the Oscars we know today in the nominations of the past. The 2010 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker, was explosive-pun intended. A woman finally won for Best Director and it took home a lot of other awards that night, however, almost 15 years later we found ourselves asking why?

You get to see a beautiful example of the human experience in just a few minutes only to be reminded that what we think is the limit of what our lives can be is really only the surface. Up challenges us to examine what it means to let go but not forget.

Sometimes a movie comes along and it just is a movie. We felt left out the loop here with A Serious Man. We didn't quite understand it, and thats okay. Not every movie is going to work for us. We enjoyed some of the performances, the cinematography and really struggled just about everywhere else.

Oh no! Did we like a Quentin Tarantino film?! While we haven't seen his entire filmography, when people talk about how great Tarantino is, Inglorious Bastards is his gold standard. From the perfect opening chapter, to the charming Christoph Waltz, and some truly beautiful shots, this quickly shot up to the tops of our rankings which took us all by surprise.

An Education was a formative film for us. It was the introduction to a favorite actress, the start to a love of independent films and a hard look at the whimsy of being a young impressionable girl. Coming back to this film fifteen years later and in a post #metoo world made for an interesting conversation.

District 9 did all the things we wanted Avatar to do. It was an exciting new Sci-Fi film telling a story with humanity at its center. We loved the production and sound design and gushed over new comer Sharlto Copley's emotionally grounded performance.

This week we watched ‘White Savior’ the movie. All of us were on the same page about this movie being completely tone deaf to the actual story or actual Christian values. While we adore Sandra Bullock and will forever worship our congenial Queen, she was not enough to make this an enjoyable experience. We’ve seen this story before, right? White boy and his western civilization come to a new place and tries to make friends with the indigenous peoples, there is a love story as bland as water, and a heavy dose of environmentalism. We could name more than one movie with this plot…James Cameron, come on! We can’t even try and make excuses that the story is simple because the technology was so new and the focus of the movie because he regurgitated tired stories again in the sequel. The first sequel in a line of many. Fingers crossed it only gets better.

Looks like we made it! Here in the final episode of this years Conversations with Oscar Series we're talking about one of the more inventive movies we've seen. Jonathan Glazer crafted an uniquely told story that felt like a rain cloud hovering over the bright shiny Höss family. If we didn't know any better, we would think they were living a happy normal life. Only we do know better, and hearing the horrors happening in the background made this film hard to digest, but magnificent to watch.

Yorgos Lanthimos has delivered another Best Picture nominee but this time it has all a little undecided how we feel. Visually, this movie is stunning. The costumes, production design, and cinematography are all some of the best modern movies have to offer, but here we are again with a story told by someone who can't fully understand the subject of the film. The time has come for us to talk about the secret sleeper amongst the Best Picture nominees. American Fiction seemingly came out of nowhere and scored five nominations. It's an important satirical comedy that surprised us with how much we enjoyed it. We're not sure it will walk away come Oscar night with any statues, but we're happy its in the conversation this year.

The combination of Celine Song's writing and directing alongside the powerful acting trio that is Greta Lee, Teo Yoo and John Magaro, created such a perfect harmony that we had a hard time finding anything to critique in Past Lives. Every choice was a masterclass in how quiet, intimate story telling can be incredibly impactful. What happens when you allow a person with too much theatre kid energy to make their passion project? Turns out you get this mess of a movie. We love Bradley Cooper, we love Carey Mulligan, and we love Leonard Bernstein, but we did not love this movie. From its messy script, to gimmicky black and white and unnecessary prosthetic we found ourselves questioning why this was nominated at all.

We finally saw one of the most anticipated movies of last year, and we had some differing thoughts. The three hour Martin Scorsese epic tells the story of The Reign of Terror that occurred in Oklahoma in the early twentieth century. While we all agree it is visually a beautiful movie, we couldn't help but feel like we wanted to see this story from the point of view of the Osage.
