Scheduling my entire year is a new concept to me. Last year was the first year I started keeping a calendar. For the second year in a row, I have gotten a cheap calendar that has every day of the year all on one page. On this episode we unpack the races on that calendar. Part 2 will be focused on wilderness courses and adventures of 2024.

A self proclaimed wild woman, Sarah has been living off grid in the wilderness for the past ten years in a tiny house she built herself. After traveling the world and being exposed to everything from the European high fashion scene as a teenage model, to studying traditional dance and music in Africa, to being a massage therapist and recording artist in LA, and then a Hollywood stunt woman, she found her ultimate joy in the wild. Deprogramming from society, following the ways of nature, and tapping into her higher powers as she builds and creates what she needs, largely from the land, has been her true bliss and passion. Foraging, wild tending, cob building, basket making, designing and making crochet and knit clothing, writing songs and other creative expressions have created a rich life full of ecstasy on the land. She loves to share her journey of personal healing and empowerment, plus land based skills, foraging and cob building through workshops, retreats and social media.

About Lucas:
I was born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis, causing my left arm to remain underdeveloped and fused at the joints. The cause of this condition is debated and largely unknown. I consider myself very fortunate as it typically affects more than one limb. I was also fortunate to have parents who did not treat me any differently than anyone else and pushed me to not let my arm hold me back.
Growing up I mostly did what people told me I couldn’t or shouldn’t be doing. I played basketball from the time I was young though high school, making the varsity team my junior and senior years. It was my first love and a way I could seek solace, challenge myself, and learn how to be a part of a team.
I found a love for running in middle school and joined the cross country team. In college I ran a 200 mile relay race with some friends and loved it. I have since run the Leadville 100 mile race twice, in 2019 as part of the Leadman series. The most daunting race of the 5 in the Leadman series was the 100 mile mountain bike race because I only use one hand on the handlebars and do not have a prosthetic for my left. I was able to complete the race in time with my hand so numb that I couldn’t shift gears. I was stoked. I have since completed the Smoke N Fire 400 mile self-supported bikepacking race twice, becoming the first to do so as an individual with a disability.
Mountainous terrain is where I find the most joy. In my new backyard of the Tetons I’ve completed the ‘Teton Picnic’ a couple of times and spend a lot of time biking around and running up various mountains. I am currently training under coach, Jason Schlarb, to become a better mountain runner and endurance ski mountaineer. With his coaching I completed the Restonica 70K and the OCC 50K this past summer, setting a PR at the 50k distance. During my time in Chamonix I was also able to advocate for adaptive athletes by speaking directly with the Admissions Manager for UTMB.
I am currently on a team of adaptive athletes with a goal of traveling from the lowest point to the highest point in elevation on every continent completely human powered. We completed South America early 2020. We also started the nonprofit called LowestHighest in which we are raising funds to help serve those with disabilities in the areas we will be traveling through. For example, providing a proper fitting prosthetic to someone who doesn't have access to one. I love to push myself to my perceived limits and push through them while exploring the great outdoor world and advocating for those in the disabled community. This journey is another way to do just that!
accomplishments:
Co-created the nonprofit LowestHighest Foundation. We have completed South America so far, biking roughly 2000 miles from Laguna Del Carbon to Aconcagua, ditching the bikes, and climbing Aconcagua
Was an athlete on the inaugural SCARPA athlete mentorship initiative
Came in 26th place, 10th in my age group, in the RUT mountain race in Montana (out of 500+ racers) and was the only competitor with a physical disability
Sponsored by Challenged Athletes Foundation
Ran the Leadville 100 mile footrace twice
Completed the Leadman Series (trail marathon, 50 mile run, 100 mile mtb race, 10k run, 100 mile footrace) all in one summer
Only person to complete the Leadville 100 mile mtb race with one arm on the handlebars (I do not use a bike prosthetic)
Completed the Smoke N’ Fire 400 mile self supported bike-packing race twice and was the first to complete this with a disability. In 2021 two others with disabilities completed it with me! This was sponsored by Challenged Athletes Foundation
Have completed the Teton ‘Picnic’ Triathlon twice and am the only person to do it with a disability (22 mile bike, 1.2 mile swim, 22 mile run/rock climb with 7500 ft of vert up the Grand Teton, 1.2 mile swim, 22 mile bike
Bike and Build 2016 rode my bike across the country from Virginia to Oregon building homes with Habitat for Humanity.

My name is Rylan Schadegg. I am an endurance multi sport, hybrid athlete, and coach. I have been coaching mountain bikers, road cyclists, trail/road runners, OCR athletes, and Hybrid athletes, for over half a decade now. I became passionate about getting the most performance out of my body a decade ago, when I realized endurance sports were my passion. Learning how to get faster, stronger, and increase my endurance ceiling engulfed my free time. I realized there are endless possibilities in endurance progression, with the right focus, and training. Over the last 7 years, I have raced mountain bikes at the Junior international level, and professionally. I have raced explosive firefighter competitions lasting under two minutes, and now I’m training to be the most fit all around athlete I can be. My most recent adventures have included racing the Hyrox Chicago Major, which earned me the 3rd fastest time ever recorded so far. 2nd at Spartan Trifecta World Champs, An OCR world championship in the 3k, and a win at Alpha Warrior. I want to show people they don’t need to live in the box we are often placed in.

A little about Jess from her Website:
Although Washington has been my home for the last 25 years, I spent my youth as a "free-range" kid living in Central Oregon where riding horses, building fires and venturing out on a trail surrounded by juniper and sage was a natural part of growing up. At age 14, I trekked the PCT from Oregon to Washington for a three-week expedition with Outward Bound and have been finding ways to engage the great outdoors with friends and family ever since. I spent a lot of time in the mountains throughout my life as a downhill ski racer and continue to explore my love for the outdoors whenever there is opportunity.
I have discovered that getting "offline" and immersed in the wonders of nature have been crucial for navigating modern stressors with more resiliency. As a parent of two teenage boys, I am well-versed in the many challenges that we all are facing as we consider the next generation and how our modern lifestyles can be detrimental to our mind, body, spirit and planet. In this unique and challenging time of uncertainty, there is freedom and expansiveness through both the inward journey of self-discovery and our personal engagement with the elements and natural world. These can be subtle explorations using the senses as well as hard skills that are available to anyone who has an interest.

From Jason's Website:
Hello, I am Jason Marsteiner and I am the owner/founder of Colorado Mountain Man Survival, LLC and founder/CEO of the non-profit organization, The Survival University. I decided to officially start this journey in 2010 when I made the move to establish a Survival School to pass on my knowledge to all those interested, but there is much more purpose behind it than just being with like-minded individuals.
I’m a Wilderness Survival Instructor and I teach people how not to die in the backcountry. I can survive off the land with little more than a knife. Take my knife away and I will make one out of nothing. I get asked at least once a week about being on Naked and Afraid. That’s not happening. Not because I’m scared of being naked, but because the show is about drama, not skills, and I don’t like drama. I’ve been on the news multiple times on foreign travel channels, in books and magazines, and am a published author of "WILDERNESS SURVIVAL GUIDE - Practical Skills for the Outdoor Adventurer". If there is ever a zombie apocalypse, then I’m your man! If we are ever in a plane crash in some remote area, I’m not your man because... Murphy ’s Law and every horror movie ever made, states that I am first to die in the crash. If I do happen to survive then no worries... our vacation just turned into an adventure!!!

About Josh Whalen:
Entrepreneur Healthcare Executive Developer PhilantropistCoffee, black. Whiskey, neat. And Napa Cab, always. I’m Josh, the Founder of Blokes. Most importantly, I’m a proud husband to my supportive wife and Dad of two sweet babies. As a former Chicago Lions rugby player, I still love finding ways to keep my blood moving—whether that’s heli-skiing in the Rocky Mountains or jamming out in the crowd at Red Rocks.
My journey to creating Blokes started a few years ago when I started feeling, well, old. I’m talking low energy, lack of focus, a dwindling drive, and yep, some failure to launch. Every treatment I sought either gave me a one-size-fits-all approach or told me to accept this new normal. As you can imagine, I didn’t.
Failing to accept the norm isn’t new for me. When I was starting out, I was fired from more jobs than I could count. I was always pushing myself hard with larger-than-life goals for my life and career. So early on, I decided to leave a successful career
in corporate America to become an entrepreneur and drive my own destiny. Now with Blokes, we’re creating the future of men’s health care. This episode is brought to you by Blokes!
