  • You are not going to want to miss any part of this episode. Kim Brophey is back by popular demand! Last season, Kim broke the dog training internet with her unique, and enlightening view of dog behavior through her LEGS model - Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self, and she has been in demand ever since, having countless requests for interviews and podcast appearances.

We continue where we left off last season, and chat about the ethics of dog ownership and why that has gone so sideways with some breeds, and have an exploratory conversation about the impact human culture has had on dogs, including aggressive behavior.

  • In this episode, I chat with none other than Kathy Sdao, and we had a chance to dive deep into applied behavior analysis and its application in aggression cases and I get to pick her brain about things like reverse order conditioning and how that can be a significant problem in aggression cases, such as when a dog isn’t taking treats in certain situations, the premium length of a session to work with a dog to modify aggressive behavior, and the dreaded undesirable behavior chains that can happen if we aren’t careful.

  • One of the most important aspects of successfully working aggression cases is often collaborating as a team with a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist.

I’m super excited to bring in another Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist for this season. I get to chat with Dr. E’lise Christensen, who is the chief medical officer for Behavior Vets, with locations in NYC and Colorado. • What's going down Bookshelvers?

We hope to find you well in this bizarre time we are all stuck in. What can we say about this episode? Firstly Jessica Pierce is such a wonderful person and we loved the time we spent talking to her about her two amazing books. We genuinely think that "The Last Walk" is a masterpiece and something that everyone, when ready, should read and "Run, Spot, Run" is a real eye opener. Secondly there are some deep and potentially upsetting topics covered. It's not easy talking about the inevitable day our Pets leave us but it is important. We (of course) try to keep it as light hearted as possible but we are sure you understand that some of the anecdotes and topics can cut deeply :) Enough waffle from us.... Please do let us know what you think.

Jessica Pierce is a bioethicist and faculty affiliate at the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She is the author of eleven books, including The Last Walk: Reflections on Our Pets at the Ends of Their Lives and Run, Spot, Run: The Ethics of Keeping Pets, and has published essays in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Guardian. She is a regular contributor to Psychology Today (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/all-dogs-go-heaven). Her website is http://jessicapierce.net. • Nat and Steve get to talk to the amazing Dr Clive Wynne about his book Dog Is Love.

Then (in true BFTBS style) they mull over his ground breaking research into how, why and if Dogs love us the way we love them. We also discuss that how, knowing what we do, we can provide better care and understanding for our dogs.

If you ever wondered how or why our two species have evolved to form this incredible relationship over thousands of years, then you must give this episode a listen and read Dr Clive Wynnes book.

Please Share far and wide and if you like it please take the time to write us a review on any of the platforms you listen to us on.

    Happy Barking, Listening and Reading

  • Slap us with a Spaniel Tail we are back for another review episode Bookshelvers!

This week it is the awesome "Office Dogs: The Manual" by Stephanie Rousseau. We caught up with Stephanie for chats and giggles way back in July just before our summer break to go through this small but, absolutely, perfectly put together little gem of a book.

This is also the first episode recorded in Nat's "woofice" whoop whoop so please excuse the interruptions caused by a plethora of birds loitering outside the window. Dogs, japes, tomfoolery and love! BOOM!

    Stephanie's Bio

Steph is an Irish dog trainer currently residing in Dublin, having previously worked extensively with dogs in London. She is passionate about dog behaviour, and over the past few years has developed a particular interest in facilitating dogs in the human workplace.

Steph takes an holistic view in her work with dogs, prioritising their needs foremost. She has completed Turid Rugaas’s IDTE, and sat on the board of the Pet Dog Trainers of Europe (PDTE) between 2017 and 2020.

Outside of her work, she enjoys looking after her two dogs, a Greyhound called Fia and an ex-laboratory Beagle cross called Ferdia.

  • I have to say, recording these podcasts has been an incredible experience for me, as I am learning so much from each and every guest.
Jen Shryock is another passionate expert that I had the pleasure of chatting with, and learned more about children and dogs, and how we can keep both safe.

We talk about what to look for as red flags for potential problems between kids and dogs, how we can help to educate the public about dog bite safety with children, and even discuss the rare, but serious topic of predatory behaviors directed at infants.
