Misha Glenny and guests discuss the woman who, as a child bride, became mother to the boy who would eventually become the first king in the Tudor dynasty. Lady Margaret Beaufort (c1443-1509) was twelve when she married Edmund Tudor, half his age, and gave birth to their son Henry when she was thirteen and Edmund was already dead from the plague. Margaret Beaufort made it her life's work to protect Henry during the Wars of the Roses, which had begun soon before his birth and, as many more obvious successors to the crown died or were killed in the wars, she pivoted to supporting Henry when he became the strongest contender against Richard III. She was to survive Richard III declaring her a traitor and went on to see Henry become Henry VII, the first Tudor king, and herself become the King's Mother. Outliving her son by a few months, she was then to help her grandson Henry VIII succeed and the Tudor dynasty continue.

Please get yourself a copy of The Sun Will RiseThe Sun Will Rise is inspired by true events and dedicated to the brave heroes of Ukraine. It is based on Misha’s reporting from inside Ukraine, real events from the war as well as the complex history between Russia and Ukraine.
ABOUT THE SUN WILL RISE:
Oksana Shevchenko remembers life as it once was.
Before the War.
Before the Invaders stripped her freedom away.
Before the Motherland decided to take what wasn’t hers, and call it her own.
As the leader of the local Union, thirty-one-year-old Oksana has met her match in enemy officer Lieutenant General Mikhailovich, who will stop at nothing to win glory for the Motherland – and himself.
After he captures the city of Heryvin, the young, ambitious Mikhailovich forces Oksana and her Union comrades to operate the local nuclear power plant for the Motherland’s gain, while sapping its capacity to operate safely.
It’s a nightmare for a city still reeling from the disastrous Accident that took the lives of dozens – including Oksana’s father – decades before.
Caught between her loyalty to those resisting the Occupation and a nuclear catastrophe threatened by increasingly impossible orders, Oksana must find a way to defeat Mikhailovich before his sadistic determination leads him to doing the unthinkable.
But Oksana might not be alone in her fight, because war makes heroes out of the ordinary and unlikely.
A grandmother defiantly waving the colour of her nation.
A principal offering a safe haven for students dreaming of brighter futures.
A young adult choosing courage in the face of mortal danger.
A country quietly showing that glory belongs to those who dare to hold on against impossible odds.
Because one day soon, the sun will set on dictators.
And the sun will rise on freedom once again.
Inspired by true events in Ukraine, The Sun Will Rise is a tribute to those bravely fighting for their freedom – and ours.
PRAISE FOR THE SUN WILL RISE:
Stirring, brilliant, soulful. An Orwellian tale, evoking the very essence of Ukraine’s fight for freedom and our right to exist”
— Kira Rudyk, leading Ukrainian Member of Parliament.
“A love letter to the human spirit, Zelinsky’s deeply personal coverage of Russia’s invasion comes to life in this stunning first novel. An affecting story about the humanity behind the news”
— Wayne Swan, President of the Australian Labor Party, former deputy prime minister and world finance minister of the year.
“Zelinsky’s outstanding journalism transported Russian brutality and Ukrainian bravery from the battlefront to our homes. Now, this story gives us a reason to hope”
— Ambassador, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia.
“Misha Zelinsky has penned a gripping book which although fictional, depicts the courage, strength and conviction of the Ukrainian people fighting for their freedom and sovereignty. Once you pick up The Sun Will Rise, you will not be able to put it down. It is an exciting read.
— Ambassador Paula J. Dobriansky, former Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs (2001-2009)
“A gripping page-turner, set in Ukraine in the wake of Russia's invasion. Misha Zelinsky has captured the bravery and humanity of Ukrainians living under occupation, as well as the callousness and cynicism of Vladimir Putin's soldiers. Original, compelling, and topical, The Sun Will Rise is an impressive novel which brings to life recent history.”
— Luke Harding, award-winning foreign correspondent with the Guardian and New York Times best selling author of books including Invasion: Russia's Bloody War and Ukraine's Fight for Survival, shortlisted for the Orwell prize.
“Zelinsky has turned his superb war reportage into a riveting first novel, inspired by real people and events, but transcending them to convey the heart behind the conflict. If you want to know why Ukrainians fight and why it's our fight too, this is the place to start. Reminiscent of Disraeli—a novelist turned British statesman—a writer with such soul, who knows what makes people and countries great, would be a rare addition to our public life.
— The Hon. Tony Abbott, 28th prime minister of Australia.

The 22nd BAFTA Games Awards will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre in London tonight. Datshiane Navanayagam is joined by this year’s host, YouTube gaming influencer Elz The Witch. Who are the female runners and riders for this year's awards, and what impact are these women having on the games industry? Datshiane is joined by Baroness Kishwer Falkner former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. A year ago, the Supreme Court made its landmark judgment on single-sex spaces. In a long-running case against the Scottish government brought by gender-critical campaigners For Women Scotland (FWS), the court clarified that, for the purposes of the Equality Act, the legal definition of a woman was based on biological sex. She'll be responding to the government announcement this week that the new guidance on single-sex spaces will be published next month after elections on the 7 May. Away From Home: The Untold Stories of Women Football Fans is an exhibition currently on at the Beacon of Light in Sunderland. Portraying the experiences of women on the terraces of the north-east since the 1950s, it looks at the more recent feminisation of sports fandom over the last 30 years and how it's led to more opportunity for women to actually become football fans. But has this led to gender equality? Co-curator Stacey Pope is Professor in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Durham University and joins Datshiane to tell us more.
Children as young as 13 could be recommended sexually explicit content on social media platform X, according to a new report which exposes potential breaches of the Online Safety Act. The Centre of Countering Digital Hate has warned that X’s algorithm and “weak safeguards” mean porn is being recommended to teenagers, and they're also being exposed to possible direct sexual contact from adults. The CCDH's CEO Imran Ahmed joins Datshiane to discuss. Citlali Fabián was announced last night as the winner of Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards, receiving amongst other things, $25,000 in prize money. She’ll be telling Datshiane about her winning series Bilha, Stories of my Sisters, in which she photographs several women from the Indigenous communities across the Oaxaca region of Southern Mexico, highlighting their pioneering work.

I genuinely think 18 year old me would be in complete disbelief that this episode exists.
So for some context for anyone who hasn't been here for 10 years, Kayla Itsines is the reason I started this Instagram account at all, I literally had “Kayla” in my username because my page was dedicated to doing her guide. In a weird way, everything that came after that was a complete snowball effect into what I do now, and what my life looks like, so getting to sit down with her felt very, very full circle.
I really wanted this conversation to go deeper than just the "Bikini Body Guide" era and how quickly it grew. We get into success, what it means to be thrust into it so young, what it does to the people around you, and how you navigate big life moments in the public eye. We also speak about pregnancy loss and pregnancy after loss in a way neither of us have really shared online before, as well as her decision to fully reacquire Sweat after selling it for $400 million in 2021.
This is honestly one of my favourite episodes we’ve ever recorded and I feel so grateful to Kayla for not only rearranging a flight to make it happen, but also being so open and honest with me. What a woman.

Hey EIChameleons, we're back! And so is some questionable TV from Sam Levinson - we get into it, as well as controversial Coachella performances and a little Lena Dunham chat! But we will be discussing Famesick next week so get your copies ready!
Euphoria has returned to our screens, with its cast of characters now having graduated from high school and firmly transplanted 5 years into the future, in the wild, Wild West of the working Adult world. Stephanie Mcneal for Glamour writes, 'as I watched a close up of Sweeney licking water out of a bowl and endured a frankly disgusting scene of Cherry and Zendaya experiencing, let’s say, stomach issues, in a car after swallowing the drugs, I had to stop and ask the question: Who is this show for, exactly?’ - we have the same question!
Next up! Bieberchella! 'Depending on your level of fandom, the stripped-down vision, with minimal audience asides, read as either radically vulnerable or disappointingly self-interested, The effect was both frustrating – would it really kill him to do more than one verse of 2015 anthem Where Are U Now? – and endearing; many tears were shed to the image of the man singing back to his 13-year-old self', writes Adrian Horton for the Guardian.
