  • Jace Newfield is a New Yorker through and through. He loves jazz music, playing baseball in Central Park and, of course, the great taste of an egg cream. He's also a person who is blind, although in a place like the Big Apple, he lives a normal life with his friends.

But when his family uproots and moves Jace to Utah, he finds himself struggling with his new surroundings. The school won't get a beeping backboard to allow him to play basketball, his music teacher hates him, and his classmates don't seem to appreciate him walking around loudly talking about how great New York is, and how everyone in Utah is a toothless hillbilly who wouldn't know culture if it spit in their egg cream. Can joining the wrestling team give Jace a new sense of purpose and belonging? Why is this movie about wrestling and not jazz music? What the hell is an egg cream? • We all feel like we don't belong on this planet now and then, but very few of us choose to construct an intergalactic satellite communications dish in our backyard to beg aliens to come and pick us up, and even fewer of us have those calls answered by a talking dog with a necklace made of lips.

Not so Mike Pillsbury, an awkward computer genius who decides to depart planet Earth when some bullies set fire to his skeleton roundabout (it's a long story). Mike soon gets more than he bargained for however, when the worst scum of the universe make a beeline for his front door, looking to exploit the hitherto undiscovered human race. Will Mike make good on his promise to leave Earth? And why do all these aliens all have human teeth? • Jett Jackson is the star of the hit TV show Silverstone, a thrilling spy drama full of karate and explosions. He's also a regular kid trying to keep his grades up and ask his friend Kayla to the prom. As you can imagine, this is a challenging lifestyle to maintain that only gets more difficult when he accidentally falls through a dimension hole and ends up in the fictional Silverstone universe, while the fictional character Silverstone ends up in the real world, living Jett's life for him.

If that sounds like a complicated premise, well done for noticing, because yes, this is a challenging one folks. Still, it's worth it for a rare good DCOM, so let's unpack it together as we get into Jett's home life, the confusing technological forever war of the Silverstone universe, and of course, the wicked machinations of the evil Michael Ironside. Enjoy, and if you want bonus episodes of the show, monthly livestream watchalongs, or a shoutout at the end of the show, remember to check out our Patreon at Patreon.com/extrahelpings.

The movie tells the story of Taylor and Courtney Callum, two spoiled, rich sisters whose thoughtless attitudes and profligate spending earn them a punishment shift working in their father's inexplicably lucrative dairy. But when embezzlement leaves the business in dire financial straits, and with their father in Ecuador for some reason, can the Callum girls step up, take responsibility and get the audience to care about the financial aspects of yoghurt production?

  • Apes. What are they all about? Can we trust them? Are they going to go ballistic and destroy our houses? If only there were some way we could ask them.

Well friends, there is: sign language, the communication method that can be learned by apes. Unfortunately the ape in this movie, Jennie, isn't really interested in learning sign language, and is more interested in ape carnage and killing the mailman. Will Jennie be able to adjust to living with a human family? How quickly is she going to destroy all of their relationships? And can an ape go to prison? • It's the holiday season folks, so this week we're cracking into a seasonal DCOM: the impossibly festive sounding The Ultimate Christmas Present (2000).

The movie tells the story of Allie and Sam, two teenage girls who steal Santa's weather machine, which you'll notice, isn't a thing Santa is known for having. If he were known for having a weather machine, said machine probably wouldn't have an earthquake button either, but while we're here imagining things, we may as imagine a better movie.

  • Continuing the grand DCOM tradition of trying to get you to care about niche sports, this week's episode is about Right on Track (2003), which takes us deep into the highly competitive world of *checks notes* junior drag racing.

Here we meet Erica Enders and her sister Courtney, junior dragster prodigies who struggle to be taken seriously because of a) the sexist attitudes of those in charge of this male dominated sport, and b) the fact that the sport itself is driving really fast in a straight line for eight seconds. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles and win the big race? Listen and find out!

  • The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a Disney ride in which you get in an elevator that flings you up and down for about a minute. As you can probably tell from that description, it's rich with narrative potential, which is why we have 1997's Tower of Terror movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, the movie we're talking about today.

Guttenberg plays the improbably named Buzzy Crocker, a fraudulent journalist who is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: head to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to solve the mysterious disappearance of five people from the elevator on Halloween night, 1939. Will Buzzy be able to get to the bottom of what happened? Is the hotel haunted? And will his sister finally relent and let him take photos of his niece in an abandoned building? Listen and find out!

  • If you didn't watch 1999's Don't Look Under the Bed when it first came out, then let us introduce you to that rarest of things: a good DCOM! If you did watch it when it first came out then you won't need reminding, as this film is absolutely terrifying and you've doubtless seen it every time you close your eyes for the last 24 years.

The film tells the story of Frances Bacon McCausland, a gifted teen who starts to be blamed for mysterious, mischievous happenings all over town. At first she suspects the improbably named Larry Houdini, a strange boy that only she can see, but it soon becomes clear that darker, more Boogeyman-related forces are at work, and Frances must team up with Larry to save her brother, and the town itself. Also, did I mention it's terrifying? Because it is.

  • Imagine being an only child when suddenly, your parents have quints, and your previously peaceful home life is shattered by five wild and wacky babies! That certainly sounds like a premise rich in comic potential, doesn't it?

Well too bad, this is a DCOM, so instead we get Quints (2000), a movie that barely features the quints of the title, but instead focuses on their older sister Jamie Grover (Kimberly J. Brown), who is neither wacky, nor a baby. How will Jamie cope with no longer being the centre of her parents' world? Is getting into George Washington Science Magnet School truly where her heart lies? Can we actually see the quints, though, please? The answers to these questions, and more, await!

  • A magic coin that grants one wish passes into your possession. Would you wish for world peace? Life-changing wealth? How about deleting your annoying kid brother from existence?

That's the questionable wish made by big bro Alex (A.J. Trauth) in this episode's DCOM, You Wish! (2003) But don't worry, his wish doesn't erase kid brother Stevie (Spencer Breslin) entirely, it just turns Stevie into a TV megastar, for some reason. Listen to Luke and Andy try and grapple with this most bizarre of DCOMs, that also features an establishment called Larry's Rockin' Coin World, a huge amount of downtown Auckland and a surprising amount of Vanessa Carlton.

Can they act non 1950s long enough to carry the town to glory? Will a normal person be able to join their ranks and not lose his temper and punch all of them?
