Conrad Keely has been a hero of mine for a long time. Since being shocked and beguiled by the lyrics to the title track from …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead’s 4th studio album, ‘Worlds Apart’ I’ve been a fan ever since. Their 5th record, ‘So Divided’ is one of my favourites of all time and their 3rd record, ‘Source Tags & Codes’ received a 10 out of 10 review from Pitchfork (Pitchfork can get f#@ked but that’s still pretty bad ass). The band has currently just completed the recording of their 11th studio album and are getting ready to release and get back out and tour around the globe again.
Hear Conrad and I discuss hitting a guy in the head with a guitar, practical rider requests, hungover twitter posts, inventing a game called Frisball and a bunch more.

Paul Kelly is one of the great voices of Australia. Not in a way where he preaches or speaks for others, it is in the way that he tells stories of its inhabitants, never hiding the scary or the ugly yet always with a tenderness and a beauty and honesty that is so hard to encapsulate as a songwriter. His song ‘How To Make Gravy’ has become a Christmas staple and Paul has extended that by releasing his new album ‘Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train’ featuring guest such as Marlon Williams, Vika & Linda, Lior, Kasey Chambers and a bunch of other friends and collaborators. We had a chat over zoom to talk about the new record, what he got up to during lockdown, the difficulty of breaking old patterns as a songwriter and plenty more.

Davey Lane is a red hot gun slinger. He joined You Am I as a youngster back in 1999 and since then has gone on to play with Crowded House, Todd Rundgren, Jimmy Barnes and a bunch of other big names in the biz, he’s the sort of musician you could comfortably get to join any band and know he will instantly make it better. He has also been making solo records since 2014, he’s a prolific artists who never stops creating, music is deep in his DNA. Hear us talk about our mutual love for The Beatles, Supergrass and Alan Partridge (who we think might actually be the real Steve Coogan), working with Producer Tony Buchen (who produced Davey’s first solo record and my latest record), how to write a spoof Chili Peppers song and plenty more.

Luke Steele knows how to create magic. From his accomplished work in the early 2000’s with The Sleepy Jackson to the grandiosity of Empire Of The Sun and the bold musical exploration and experimentation of his project Dreams with Daniel Johns from Silverchair, Luke has written some absolute first class tunes that contain that inexplicable quality which transcends language and trend and resonates with people of all ages. His new project H3000 is a collaboration with producer Jarrad Rogers and is a meritorious continuation of Luke’s musical journey. We talk about Luke’s new bushman beard and his bear-proofing skills, waiting for the right musical calling, ignoring the fear of people’s opinions, meeting Rocky and a bunch more.

Argentinian artist Daniela Spalla has all the hallmarks of a star. Charisma, style, wit, talent, the look, she is the complete package. Based in Mexico City she has been rising to fame steadily over the last 5 years.
Her latest record ‘Puro Teatro’ (Mere Theatre) is an 80’s inspired affair with sophisticated musicality and top notch songwriting all topped off with her gentle elegant vocals. Daniela and I discuss Mexican pop sensation Luis Miguel, writing the lyrics for the same song 3 times, how she discovered her own ‘tiny voice’ and how we would both be happy to never hear Dance Monkey ever again.

Gretta Ray is a natural when it comes to songwriting. She was already kicking arse as a teenager when she won the Vanda & Young songwriting competition for her song Drive back in 2016. Since then she has released some impressive singles and an excellent EP and her debut album ‘Begin To Look Around’ will be out in August of this year, nice one Gretta! We discuss how we met 10 years ago when Gretta was a kid singing in the Young Voices Of Melbourne children’s choir (who featured on a Miami Horror song), we talk about John Mayer not wanting to play Your Body Is A Wonderland (just play it John ya dick!), our resistance to Tik Tok, how difficult it is to write a great pop song and a bunch more.

Murray Cook is one of the founding members of Australian children’s music group The Wiggles. Easily recognisable in his red skivvy with a guitar around his neck, Murray played in the band for 20 years and recorded an enormous amount of records (an album every year and sometimes more!). At their peak they were known to play up to 40 shows a month and on average were playing to a million people every year, that definitely makes them one of the hardest working bands in showbiz. Guitar Magazine once speculated that since Cook was one of the first guitarists children were exposed to, he might be the most influential guitarist in the world, nice one Murray! Since leaving the Wiggles in 2012 Murray has been focusing on his new project The Soul Movers which just released a new record entitled ‘Evolution’.
Murray and I caught up in Sydney to talk about infinite Wiggledom, American stalkers, The Soul Movers, touring like a madman, what makes a children’s hit single and a bunch more.

Lachlan Stuckey is the guitar player in Melbourne instrumental soul band Surprise Chef. He also runs the record label College Of Knowledge which puts out their records and other like minded contemporaries. Their latest record ‘Daylight Savings’ is exemplary, the playing is super tight, the production is gritty and the musicality is on point, it’s impressive stuff. We sat down to discuss jazz school, Marilyn Manson, whether you really want to know what’s in a chicken McNugget and what constitutes musical blackface.

Coco Reilly released her debut self-titled record in December of 2020 and it’s excellent, it was a swell way to finish off a very silly year, thanks Coco! Recorded in Nashville over the course of a few years it took her 3 attempts at recording it to get it right and was definitely worth all the hard work. Coco and I have worked together on a bunch of projects over the years and I think she’s an exceptional songwriter with a real natural gift for melody and chord movements, I’m a big fan. We recorded this episode remotely as Coco is currently living in Iceland and this is actually the first episode of The Bottom Of It to be recorded that way! We talked all things Iceland, American democracy, recording an album multiple times, whether being a narcissist is good for success in the music biz and the circadian rhythms of darkness.

Clinton Tokona is the bass player for iconic New Zealand band Weta. Tookie (or Toks as he is known) and I have been good friends since Weta released their debut (and only!) album ‘Geographica’ back in 2000. We met backstage at Kiwi high school band competition The Pepsi Smokefree Rockquest which I was competing in with my first band 1QA and Weta were the guest performers. Since then Toks and I have played in a bunch of different projects with each other and have enjoyed many a lol over a coffee/tea/beer/cigarette/other.
After the death of his brother Aaron Tokona (the principal singer/songwriter for Weta) earlier this year the band have remastered their record and are celebrating it’s 20th anniversary along with a new single entitled ‘So Far, So Close’.
Toks and I talk about boxing, bass playing, cheap eggs benedict, his brother Aaron, how he (maybe) met Flea (but DEFINITELY met Neil Finn) and a bunch more.

Nicolaas Oogjes is the ringleader of globulous, wonky and gooey Melbourne band NO ZU. Edward Quinn is one half of Melbourne electronic duo Slum Sociable. Edward takes care of all their production duties (AND the hot guitar licks!) and is a real wiz when it comes to whipping up fresh beats in the studio. Edward and I along with Angeline Armstrong have been collaborating on a new project called Telenova over the last year and things are sounding tip top thanks to his expertise. We sat down to talk about the Chili Peps and Jack Johnson, what makes an exceptional live show, whether or not something is good enough for the boys in Queensland and if Opeth is the ‘real shit’ or not.

Jake Webb is a musical adventurer, The Methyl Ethel records he creates cover a lot of themes and concepts and move melodically in such beguiling ways. His voice is elegant and bewitching and the production is right on, I dig what the man is doing! Sam Sparro has a penchant for nostalgia, it runs deep in his family. His self-titled first record hinted at the 80s, his second record ‘Return To Paradise’ was late 70s disco flavoured and his latest record ‘Boombox Eternal’ is a homage to the new jack swing era. Sam always brings something fresh to everything he does and his voice is exceptional, the man can sing! We sat down to discuss the highs and lows of the record biz, heading to the suburbs for tranquility, Myspace and our mutual fear (and adoration) for Beyonce.

Tony Buchen is an A-class producer. Not only does he know how to make things sound shit-hot and get the best out of an artist and their songs but he is also an excellent musician too, it’s a winning combo! Him and I have been working together a bunch over the last year and his musicality and studio knowledge is second to none. We sat down to talk about authenticity in art, how being in the fanciest studios with a lot of history doesn’t mean you’ll automatically create something special, what makes live music so exhilarating and how he could happily never hear ’It’s Raining Men’ ever again.

The Phoenix Foundation are one of my all-time favourite bands. So much so that I’ve dedicated two episodes to them! Since their second record ‘Pegasus’ was released in 2005 I’ve followed their career closely and have caught them live every chance I’ve had. Samuel Flynn Scott is one of the principal songwriters and singers in the band alongside Luke Buda (who I interviewed for episode 52). Sam and I talk about songwriting in creative bursts and stock piling songs, the difficulty of songwriting when you’re a family man, what you would do if KFC offered you a shit tonne of money to use one of your songs and what it means to give up a fictitious dream and enjoy what you have.

The Phoenix Foundation are one of my all-time favourite bands. Since their second record ‘Pegasus’ was released in 2005 I’ve followed their career closely and have caught them live every chance I’ve had. Donny Benét has a very strong aesthetic. An Italian 80s lothario, a nostalgic romantic, a hot shot bass playing love machine, the list goes on.
