A HOW-TO GUIDE FOR BUILDING BETTER SOCIETIESWhat happens when an authoritarian country takes over as the dominant world power? How does the changing world order affect your day-to-day life? How and why are disruptive technologies used for “good” or “evil” in shaping societies today?Well, The Better Societies Podcast believes you deserve answers… or at least some passionate opinions from our expert guests.Every week, Adrien Harrison and guests unpack both dominant and potential theories on how to structure societies, how disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence and web 3.0 affect those goals, and the implications of such dramatic shifts in the balance of global powers, for humanity today and its future generations. With backgrounds in entrepreneurship, philosophy, AI, web 3, sustainability, health, education, international relations, sociology, politics, and more extraordinary guests explain how the latest innovations can help create both utopic and dystopic results, disrupting global industries, international trade, and geopolitical diplomacy – as well as the psychological and activist implications for everyone minding their daily lives, and the opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs – debating each point with a hint of humor to lighten the mood.Aside from tactfully maneuvering through existential risks and unsettling moral quandaries, guests enjoy the show because it’s friendly, long-form, and endlessly fascinating. This leads to extremely open, raw discussions and — paradoxically — fewer edits.Press outlets have included the podcast in their list of “suggestions to make you remember the world can be a good place.” It’s about positive outlooks you can use, not fearmongering or other B.S. the Internet has enough of that, and we wanted to do something to reverse the trend. So bring your popcorn and an open mind, then let us blow it for you 🙂

Welcome to The Network State podcast, where we explore the future of technology and its impact on society.
Today we had the pleasure of speaking with Fabrice Guerrier, a Haitian-American science fiction and fantasy writer and founder of syllble, a pioneering sci-fi and fantasy production house and publisher that creates fictional worlds by connecting diverse creative writers, visual artists, and inspired creators from different countries, backgrounds, and cultures through artist collectives.
Then, he was inducted into Forbes 30 Under 30 list and named to Root magazine’s 100 most influential African-Americans.
We'll be exploring the following questions:
- Why is understanding Afrofuturism important for global geopolitics and what does it say about humanity?
- How can Afrofuturism challenge and redefine traditional notions of power and authority?
- How does imagination play a role in envisioning alternative futures that are inclusive and empowering for all people?
- In what ways can Afrofuturism inspire creative solutions to address social, political, and environmental challenges?
- How can we harness the power of Afrofuturism to foster cultural exchange and understanding between diverse communities?
- What role does storytelling and narrative play in shaping our collective vision of the future?
- How can Afrofuturism challenge and dismantle harmful stereotypes and biases that perpetuate systemic oppression?
- How can Afrofuturism inspire new models of governance and social structures that prioritize equality, justice, and sustainability?
- What are the potential ethical implications of Afrofuturist technologies and their impact on marginalized communities?
- How can Afrofuturism contribute to the decolonization of knowledge production and challenge Eurocentric narratives of history and progress?

In this episode, with Vahram Ayvazyan, the founder and board chairman at the Network State, an International Relations and Genocide scholar, startup founder, and a Climate Reality Leader, personally trained by former US vice president Al Gore, we discuss the concept of a Network State and its potential benefits for Armenia.
We dive into how a Network State differs from traditional forms of governance and explore how it could foster greater citizen participation and engagement.
We also touch on how blockchain technology could increase transparency and accountability, and how a Network State could stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in Armenia.
We'll be exploring the following questions:
- What is a Network State, and how does it differ from traditional forms of governance?
- How could a Network State foster greater citizen participation and engagement in governance, and what tools and platforms could be used to facilitate this?
- How could blockchain technology increase transparency and accountability in government transactions and activities in a Network State model?
- How could a Network State stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in Armenia, and what resources and networks could be leveraged to support this?
- How could a Network State help to address social and economic challenges such as poverty, inequality, and lack of access to services in Armenia, and what innovative solutions could be developed to tackle these issues?
- Overall, what benefits could a Network State provide for Armenia, and how could it help to create a more participatory, transparent, and inclusive form of governance that better serves the needs of its citizens?

Welcome to The Network State podcast, where we explore the future of technology and its impact on society.
In this episode, we're joined by Bara Badwan, an MIT Grad and Yale Ph.D. specialized in computational neuroscience, now working in tech, who’s deeply familiar with and very concerned about artificial intelligence, to discuss the pressing issue of AI replacing our jobs.
As AI continues to advance at a rapid pace, there are concerns that many jobs may become automated, leaving workers out of a job.
We'll be exploring the following questions:
- What jobs are most at risk of being replaced by AI?
- Can AI be used to create new jobs, and if so, what types of jobs? And how can we ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed fairly across society?
- We'll also be delving into the potential economic and social consequences of widespread AI job displacement, and discussing what role the government and companies should play in mitigating this impact.
- We'll explore the possibility of implementing a universal basic income and the philosophical questions around work.
- Should the human species continue to grow until it becomes a type 2, 3, or 4 civilization on the Kardashev scale?
- What are the societal implications of AI replacing most of our jobs.
Join us as we navigate the complex issues surrounding AI and job displacement, and explore how we can ensure a smooth and fair transition to an AI-dominated workforce for all involved.

In this episode, we dive into how and why The Bitcoin Blockchain Can Record Non-Bitcoin Events, in other words how the technology works to record things like photographs, and documents, and why that would be useful for us to have as an immutable recording of the historical events of an Economy and Society. And Ultimately how Cryptohistory is Cryptographically Verifiable Macrohistory
We cover:
How we can use Bitcoin's blockchain to provide a cryptographically verifiable record of any historical event for the cost of a single transaction.: like who did something, who received something, what happened, when did it happen, where did it happen, and potentially even why it happened How the proof-of-existence mechanism can log arbitrary data to the Bitcoin blockchain, including data from other blockchains, to make copies of them How tools like Elliptic and Chainalysis can deanonymize many transactions on Bitcoin. How Other technologies, like Zero-knowledge proofs, Smart contract chains, and Decentralized social networks, can extend the capability of what can be hidden or recorded on-chain. How Naming and Incorporation systems like ENS allow us to hold individuals and corporations accountable for their actions. How Cryptocredentials, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Non-Transferable Fungibles (NTFs), and Soulbounds can speed up hiring and recruitment processes to increase social mobility around the world What blockspace is and why our advancements in blockspace will allow for the same kind of advancements we’ve seen with computer processing power, things like having a smartphone that is more powerful than old computers that used to take up an entire room How we can use this technology to protect ourselves from deepfakes, misinformation, and government censorship And finally, how having a global or national ledger of record would have helped us save thousands of lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, and trillions of dollars by curbing global inflation ratesWe covered so much in both technical and layman’s terms so that anyone could understand these concepts.
Since we’re just starting out and could really use your support, if you like this episode, please tantalize that like button into a roaring frenzy, share this episode, comment, sign up for our newsletter, and retweet our episodes to @Balajis so we can get his attention and get him on the Podcast!

In this episode, we explore the fascinating world of Bitcoin's blockchain technology and how it can be used to record history in a robust and trustworthy way.
From digital signatures to cryptographic hash functions, we dive into the technical details and explain why they matter for keeping records that are almost impossible to falsify.
We cover how blockchain technology can log crucial meta data like who did something, who received something, what happened, and when it happened.
We explain how the Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism of the Bitcoin blockchain makes it difficult to falsify information, and we discuss the advantages of using digital signatures to tie an individual's identity to an individual action.
We also explore how this technology could keep presidents, judges, and military leaders accountable, and how it affects the line between national security and individual privacy. We explain how cryptographic hash functions make it difficult to corrupt the logs of what someone did, and how timestamps on the blockchain make it difficult to corrupt the logs of when something happened.
However, we also discuss the potential risks and failures of relying on blockchain data as truth, including quantum decryption, undiscovered bugs in the code, and possible 51% attacks from China or other powerful actors.
Overall, this episode provides an in-depth exploration of blockchain technology and how it can revolutionize macrohistory. Macro history is the history of non-reproducible systems. So what does this mean? A non-reproducible system is one in which there are too many variables to be easily reset and replayed from the beginning. It is history that is not directly amenable to a controlled experiment.
On a very large scale, it is the history of humanity. With the introduction of document digitization, macro history can be more easily recorded and understood.
This episode will cover the following:
Recap of microhistory Micro history vs macro history Why our history is subjective Why better recordkeeping standards will improve innovation Why Big Data should really be called Big History Why citizens’ assemblies are a better way to govern How having a shared understanding of what is true impacts decision-making What are the key performance indicators of a country? What are the KPIs that drive business? If micro history and macro history were on a continuum, they would be on opposite sides. Macro history is the history we know more of, it’s a lot messier. More easily put, science progresses by taking phenomena formerly thought of as non-reproducible (and hence unpredictable) systems, isolating key variables, and turning them into reproducible (and hence predictable) systems.
Science progresses through records management, something that has quickly improved in the digitized world. Why do recordkeeping and the scientific method lead to progress? Why is it important?
What we know about history is from what we have recovered from what people have written down - an imperfect way of recording history. Today, we have digital documentation on an unprecedented scale, changing the way we record and recover information.
Why do we want to measure this stuff? Optimizing market performance might be one answer, but if we start monitoring everything people do, where do we draw the line on privacy?
Let us know what you think in the comments below!

The scale of history is huge, the timeframe is long, and the measurements are often intentionally corrupted. After all, history is written by the winners, can be influenced by many factors, and needs to be verified. This verification comes through the analysis of historiography, which is the study of historical recordkeeping.
It is important to look at history to understand these trajectories because history is a cryptic epic of twisting trajectories →
1) Cryptic because narrators are unreliable and often intentionally misleading
2) Epic because the timescales are so long that you have to consciously sample beyond your own experience and any human lifetime to see patterns
3) Twisting because there are curves, cycles, collapses, and non-straight patterns
4) Trajectories because history is ultimately about the time evolution of human beings
How then, can one analyze the scope of history? As information becomes more available, what is the purpose of history? How do we hold nationstates accountable, using micro history? Why is denominating value so important? What do history and the stock market have in common? When we look at things beyond our own understanding, our own timeline - what infrastructure is being used? Why do we look at patterns in the first place? What other approaches should one take? Share your thoughts!

Bitcoin, network states, and biased algorithms: how do they relate? Is it time we implement higher data standards in tech?
This week’s episode not only answers these questions but does so with our very first guest. Severin Deutschmann, Founder and Managing Director of OpenTelos.com, shares his thoughts on:
- network states enabling bottom-up regulation
- algorithms being designed to control us
- the data economy
- weaponized algorithms
- ethical tech and ethical algorithms
- tech’s influence on global affairs
- censorship and freedom of speechIf anyone can build a network state, which both Balaji Srinivasan and Severin Deutschman suggest is true, then isn’t it imperative that we redefine tech standards to ensure accountability among tech companies?
Balaji and Severin both share their thoughts on what makes a good network state leader. In short, you must have good intentions and strong communication skills. Using the network state for good means a leader should be able to organize, delegate, and execute tasks within the network state, while optimizing value proposition.
Unsurprisingly, most companies allow algorithmic bias to slip into their code and influence their digital marketing campaigns. Rather than resolve this issue, companies intentionally use algorithmic targeting as a way to increase profits - despite the negative repercussions their algorithms cause, even if that means inciting violence online.
What’s the trade-off? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Are leaders prioritizing the right metrics?
Why does history matter for startups?
There’s a lot to consider here. While many might argue that profit should be prioritized above all else, many also oppose this claim, suggesting that people’s happiness matters more than monetary value.
This episode will cover our thoughts on the following topics:
What makes a good leader? Is GDP the most important metric of a country? Should leaders care about morals? Should a company prioritize morals or profit? Does happiness play a role in the economy? Does happiness affect company profit? Should leaders prioritize happiness? Using history to learn how to be happy Making a good decision for the futureIf history is written by the victors, can we be sure that history offers us the answers we need to become better leaders?
This episode discusses whether societies should focus on moral issues or on prioritizing monetary value. The happiness advantage states that the most important indicator of success should be the happiness metric. This is because leaders prioritizing happiness tend to see more profit and activity in their societies, as well as the mere emotional advantage that comes with being content.
This is an interesting point since happier societies are also oftentimes more inclusive and welcoming societies. This means that we need to demand that the history we learn from is an inclusive history, a representative history, and one which shares a dynamic perspective, drawing on inclusive historical records, rather than a one-sided narrative. With this approach, there is no reason we cannot learn how to address any economic problem at hand.

Why does history matter? How do we know if society is broken or not?
What’s the point in keeping track of everything that’s happened before?
How does history influence the present and future?
The Network State by Balaji Srinivasan makes the case that history is crucial for several reasons:
In part one of this episode we covered:
- How History is how you win the argument. Winning arguments need more than pure logic alone; you need facts, so you need history.
- How History determines legality.
- How History determines morality.
- How History is how you develop compelling media.
- How History is the true value of cryptocurrency.
- How History tells you who’s in charge.
We explored how new network states should treat or teach their history. And whether on-chain records make it impossible to lie. We also dived into what history tells us about how radical truth, honesty, and transparency would work at scale using examples from companies doing it today.
Today, in part 2 of "Why history is crucial" we cover:
- History determines your hiring policy.
- Founders need to know history in order to have the moral authority and maneuverability to make the best decisions
- How History is how you debug our broken society.

Leaders cannot exist without followers. But followers cannot be coerced. A good boss must be a good leader. If not, followers will desert or mutiny and find a new leader. This is the eternal dynamic between a leader versus a boss. And leaders versus followers.
Traditionally, the mark of a strong tech company has been its innovation first, and company culture second. However, when it comes to creating a startup society, you have to start with community culture first and then cultural innovation.
Cultural innovation means probing the past and learning from it.
In this episode of the Network State Podcast, we uncover how human history is the basis for understanding the way we interact with each other. With a strong insight into the history that shaped us, we highlight what rules have guided us to where we are today.
As we dive deeper into how to build a new society, we retrace the steps of how countries were built in the first place.
Finally, from the point of view of an entrepreneur, we analyze how much easier it is to use the iPhone, one of the most advanced handheld devices on the market versus being the founder of the company that makes iPhones, Apple Inc, one of the most successful companies of all time.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How startup societies are different from startups
2. How learning from history makes you a better leader vs boss
3. How starting a startup society is much harder than using its products, to be a leader vs follower
Topics Covered:
- technological innovation first vs company culture
- leader vs boss
- startup societies vs startups
- innovating on technology means forecasting the future
- innovating on culture means probing the past
- History is the closest thing we have to a physics of humanity
- how countries were built in the first place
- the logistics of the process
- leader vs follower
- how history teaches us
- how history teaches founders
- iPhone customer vs Apple Inc founders

In this episode, we’ll explore the concept of The Network State popularized by Balaji Srinivasan.
Technology has allowed us to start new companies, new communities, and new currencies. But can we use it to create new cities or even new countries? A key concept is to go cloud-first, land last — but not land never — by starting with an online community and then materializing it into the physical world.
Adrien Harrison and Raphael Benros explore the implications of this new type of country in The Network State Podcast.
Topics Covered:
- Introduction
- Nation vs state
- Digital power
- The identity stack
- Cloud first, land last
- Diplomatic recognition
- Root access to land
- Calibrating risk as a society
- Regulatory harmonization
- Founding vs inheriting
- The powerful vs powerless
- The competition for people
- v3 of governanceThe podcast is about the concept of a network state and how it is possible to start your own country from scratch. We learn that a network state is a highly aligned online community with a capacity for collective action that crowdfunds territory around the world and eventually gains diplomatic recognition from preexisting states.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. It is now possible for anyone to start their own country, thanks to recent advancements in technology.
2. A "network state" is a highly aligned online community with a capacity for collective action that crowdfunds territory around the world and eventually gains diplomatic recognition from preexisting states.
3. Most countries in the past have been created through an election, revolution, war, micronations, or space colonization - but the network state takes advantage of existing internet infrastructure to bypass many of these obstacles.
