Today we have a special episode to mark World Oceans Day. The theme this year is about working together for change: Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate through transformative collaboration. With this theme in mind, Georgina Menheneott is joined by the wonderful Hannah Russell, ex crew member and founder of sustainable and eco-friendly product supplier, Viveco Yachts. Together, they look at the bigger picture of sustainability followed by a deep dive into something that affects nearly every single one of us (especially as we head into the summer season) and that is of course sunscreen. From ingredients, to formulas and packaging, we discuss everything you need to know to make an informed and sustainable decision when it comes to sunscreen this summer. Here are some key considerations regarding sunscreen and sustainability:
Avoid Harmful Ingredients: Oxybenzone and Octinoxate should be on your avoidance list. Opt for Safe Mineral Sunscreens: Steer clear of nano particles. Embrace Refillable Dispensers: Seek out bulk supply options with refillable dispensers. Choose Aluminum Packaging: Aluminum packaging is infinitely recyclable, making it an eco-friendly choice. With Hannah's guidance, we're thrilled to have discovered a product that not only safeguards us from the sun's rays but also nurtures our oceans while upholding sustainability. That product is oeSHun. After successfully trialling their range with select yachts from the Burgess fleet last summer, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! For more information, you can explore oeSHun via Viveco Yacht's website here and enjoy a special 10% discount using code BURGESS2024.

This week we have been running one of our crew awareness weeks, this time our focus being on anger management. Anger is an emotion that can affect us all at some points in our lives and is perfectly normal, but when it is expressed in a harmful or aggressive way, it can become problematic, especially when working in a close environment.
It's important that we understand the reasons for our anger and learn how to manage it, and to help us understand how we do this, we are really thrilled to welcome back Counselling Psychologist Gary Napier for this episode. In our chat we explore the nature of anger, identify common triggers, and discuss effective strategies for managing our emotions.

Trigger warning - please be aware that we will be discussing mental health and suicidal thoughts in this episode.
Today we are so thrilled to be joined by Melanie White, ex-yachtie and author of 'Behind Ocean Lines', a very personal account of how Melanie struggled with her mental health during her time on yachts. Melanie is so candid in her book, talking about topics that most of us find very hard to talk about, including having suicidal thoughts. For people struggling with their mental health, not being able to talk about it can be one of the worst parts of the illness, and by being so vulnerable Melanie is helping to open up these conversations around mental health. Her story helps us to break down the stereotypes, and take the stigma out of something that affects us all.

Today is International Women’s Day! To celebrate we have two podcast episode specials for you!
Our first episode is with the incredible Tracy Edwards MBE – Tracy famously entered the first all-female crew into the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race on sailing yacht Maiden. Maiden crossed the start line on 02 September 1989 and sailed into the history books. Maiden went on to win two of the legs and came second in class overall. The best result for a British boat since 1977 and the best result for an all-female crew ever. Tracy was awarded an MBE and became the first woman in its 34-year history to receive the yachtsman trophy of the year award.
Tracy speaks to Burgess Head of Yacht Management Ryan Green and Burgess Assistant Crew Manager Lorena Gimenez about her incredible career at sea, her experience with female empowerment and how we can encourage more women to join the yachting industry.
We also highly recommend you check out the Netflix documentary ‘Maiden’ to learn more about Tracy’s story.
