As a registered dietitian and ultralight long-distance backpacker, Aaron Owens Mayhew created Backcountry Foodie while preparing homemade, lightweight meals for her thru-hike attempt of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2017 and subsequent section and thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail, Oregon Coast Trail, Colorado Trail, and the Condor Trail.

I'm excited to invite this week's guest back on the show! Susan is an online friend of mine, and she’s been on the show twice before to talk about her adventures. First, we discussed the Valley of Flowers and then the Camino Inglés. Now she’s back to talk about a 40-year dream she had that she finally fulfilled.
One of the things I love about Susan’s adventures is that she talks and writes about lesser-known places and routes, so I get to learn about new places. I hope you find this episode inspiring! Susan is a great example of someone who dreamt of a very specific adventure, and made it happen.
About Susan JagannathSusan Jagannath successfully combined a passion for reading, a love of writing and a fascination for technology, to create a career in technical writing. With over 60 technical manuals (not) to her name, she finally decided to use her writing and publishing skills for herself and publish her own books independently.
To her mild surprise, her very niche books went bestseller regularly, that's when she realised she had a system that could help others write and publish as well.
As an army brat and then military wife, her life included seven different schools, three universities and a couple of emergency evacuations from conflict zones. Travel and adventure were normal parts of life.
She now believes in seizing every opportunity to have a new adventure, especially post-pandemic.
Whether it’s camping on the beach in Australia, trekking in the Himalayas, kayaking in Queensland, whitewater rafting down the Ganges, or walking the Camino in Spain, her philosophy is to pack it into one or two weeks to create memories for a lifetime, (and disconnect from television and computer games).
Susan is now on the next adventure of her life, traveling post-pandemic, helping corporate escapees write their first bestseller, and learning to be an awesome grandmother.

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, J. F. Penn. Joanna is a friend of mine, and I’ve been listening to her fantastic podcast for over a decade now, The Creative Penn. Like me, Jo is a fan of solo walking, and she’s recently written a book on pilgrimage.
While I’ve done various long-distance trails in England, I’ve never done a pilgrimage. The Camino de Santiago has been on my list of things to do since 1996 when I first read Paulo Coelho’s book about it, so it’s definitely something I’ve been wanting to do.
In this episode, we talk about what pilgrimage is and why you might want to do one. You certainly don’t have to be religious—you can use a pilgrimage to explore your own inner journey or simply to visit ancient sites or sacred places. I hope this episode inspires you to start thinking about pilgrimage!

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Lauri McKean. I often get asked by women how to overcome fears of solo adventures. That’s why I talk about it so much on this podcast and on my blog.
Lauri has a great story of how she overcame her fear of solo backpacking and camping, and how facing that fear has had a positive effect on other areas of her life. I hope you find it inspiring!
About Lauri
Lauri is a lover of the natural world who has a fondness for hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and foraging edible and medicinal flora and fungi. She grew up in the magnificent state of Colorado (USA) where the Rocky Mountains meet the high desert and spent much of her childhood outdoors exploring these lands with her family.
As an adult, she continued these outdoor adventures with friends and partners but felt uncomfortable with the idea of spending a night in the woods alone. At age 49, she decided to finally face this fear head-on and challenge herself to a one-night solo backpacking excursion. This not only resulted in a magnificent night but also the confidence and freedom to venture out for many others. Further, it was part of a transformational process that redefined her relationship with herself, her purpose, and others.
Many of the things she learned during this process she now applies in her work as a Love, Dating, and Relating Coach through her business, Aligning to Love.

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Helen Lear-Grant. Helen has traveled to many of the remote places I want to visit in Scotland, like the Inner and Outer Hebrides. I’ve had other friends visit there over the years for outdoor adventures, and it’s been on my list ever since.
In this episode, we talk about adventures in the Hebrides, and also Helen’s adventures as a disability travel blogger. We explore how her adventures have changed her life, and what she’s achieved with her adventures that she didn’t think was possible.
About Helen
Helen is a disability travel blogger based in Scotland, exploring all of the fantastic wheelchair-accessible things that Scotland has to offer. Originally from England, she moved to Scotland 9 years ago and was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition less than a year later. She now lives in a rural village on the cusp of the highlands, with her wife and their two dogs - though they're all more likely to be found on an adventure somewhere!

I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week's episode is late because I've been ill for a couple of weeks, lost my voice, and had to cancel two interviews. My voice is still a bit off, but at least I'm no longer croaking like a whispering frog.
In this episode, I reflect on my experience working toward my black belt in kickboxing. I discuss what it took to pass the grading, and what I learned from the experience. I also reflect on how it's affected my outdoor adventures, and how the activities have been mutually supportive.
Many months ago, a listener wrote in and asked me to talk about kickboxing. I've been waiting until now to do this episode.

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Doug Noll. Doug was born with multiple disabilities: he had both audio and visual disabilities as well as two club feet. After struggling with sports in school, he turned to Scouts and the outdoors and started to thrive.
Doug is a whitewater guide, Level III PSIA ski instructor, sailor, and fly fisher. He has also been a rock climber, mountaineer, competitive swimmer, and Class IV kayaker. His various outdoor adventures have taught him discipline, persistence, patience, mental endurance, and fortitude, which he applies in his career as a peacemaker and mediator.
In this episode, we discuss Doug’s adventures, how he overcame his disabilities to thrive in the outdoors, and what he’s learned over the years.
About Doug Noll
Douglas E. Noll, JD, MA left a successful career as a trial lawyer to become a peacemaker. His calling is to serve humanity, and he executes his calling at many levels. He is an award-winning author, teacher, trainer, and highly experienced mediator. Doug’s work carries him from international work to helping people resolve deep interpersonal and ideological conflicts to training life inmates to be peacemakers and mediators in maximum-security prisons.
His fourth book, De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less, was published by Beyond Word Publishing in September 2017. De-Escalate is now in four languages and in its second printing.
He is the co-founder of Prison of Peace, and creator of the Noll Affect Labeling System. In 2012, Doug was honored by California Lawyer Magazine as California Attorney of the Year.

I'm back again, with another solo episode! Fear is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. A few weeks ago, on episode 483 with Erica Terblanche, we briefly discussed the importance of choosing things you're terrified of.
That concept stuck in my mind. I know I'm always talking about the importance of stepping outside of our comfort zone, and that's because I've been doing that a lot lately, especially in the last six months.

I originally discovered him on PodcastGuests.com which, incidentally, is a great place to find guests for a podcast – or to pitch yourself to be featured on other shows. A few months ago, I read his fantastic novel, The Trail, which I really enjoyed.

I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week, I'm talking about how outdoor adventures teach you what you can accomplish when you increase your tolerance for discomfort. This is a conversation that's come up with a couple of different people recently, and I wanted to share it here.
I would never have been able to run 100km if I hadn't gotten through many uncomfortable runs. I would never have completed the Coast to Coast – or any of my trails – if I hadn't pushed beyond discomfort. I wouldn't be ready for my black belt grading if I hadn't showed up for many uncomfortable sparring classes.

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Marie-Pier Tremblay. We were recently introduced by Allison Boyle from episode 475. Just three years ago, Marie overcame doubt and fear to hike one of my dream trails: the Pacific Crest Trail.

About Erica Terblanche
Erica is a life and well-being coach, and has a popular weekly feature on Mix FM on the science of well-being and how people can build resilience in scientifically validated ways.
She has a degree in psychology. a masters in positive psychology from the University of East London in the UK, and several international coaching qualifications that enable her to work with individuals and especially within teams.
She has twenty years of corporate experience at Exco and Board level in financial services and holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
She is also a well-known and accomplished endurance athlete, having won some of the world's most grueling multi-day races (she has told me the furthest she has ever run without stopping once is 208km - she knows about perseverance and grit and not just from textbooks) and she is the author of the much-acclaimed memoir RUN for the Love of Life, which also made it to the Exclusive Books Top Recommended list for non-fiction only three months after publishing the book.

I'm back again, with another solo episode! Today I'll be talking about something that I've been reflecting on a lot lately. I talk a lot about personal growth and mindset – and it's true these two things are a big part of my life. I'm always looking at how I can learn and grow.
The thing is, there's always room for more growth – but do you want it? Do you really need it? A few months ago, I talked about balancing growth with integration, and I do think that's important. But even more important is to pause once in a while and ask ourselves: Do I want to focus on growth right now? Do I need to focus on growth right now? What do I choose to focus on?

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Corinne Kowal. I first discovered Corinne on Instagram, where I saw that she was planning to hike the Cape Wrath Trail, which has been on my bucket list for a couple of years now. I avidly followed her preparations for the trip, and couldn’t wait to hear more once she returned.
The Cape Wrath Trail is often considered to be one of Britain’s most challenging trails, mostly due to its remoteness and rough terrain. I find it appealing because I love the idea of being out alone on the trails in such a wild part of the country. I hope you find this episode inspiring!
About Corinne
German, born and raised in France, I have studied in NYC where I started working, moved back to Europe where I met my husband, and we have subsequently lived 11 years abroad (Berlin, Brussels and Madrid) before moving back to France.
I am the mother of 3 children: 2 boys aged 12 (almost 13) and 9 and a girl who is 5 and a half.
I am a self-taught interior designer and property renovation manager.
I have always been a walker if not a hiker. My parents weren't very sports-inclined but the Sunday morning walk in the nearby forest was somewhat of a ritual.
We used to spend holidays as children in the German pre-alps in Bavaria (between Munich and Salzburg) where we hiked up some easy paths.
I took up nordic walking while living in Berlin over 10 years ago and have been able to practice it regularly since moving back to France 4 years ago.
Living pretty much in the center of the Fontainebleau forest has enabled me to walk on a regular basis to prepare for the CWT.
