  • We all have at least one, right?

Maybe it's from a genre you usually avoid. Maybe it's a little controversial. Maybe it's known for having more plot than actual story (if you know what I mean). Maybe it's just outright bad. Whatever the case, we all have shows we're a little less proud of enjoying, but no more!

This episode, we take a look at some of our favorite shows of ill repute! From shows made for kids to shows made by 4Kids; from basic trash to outright dumpster fires, these are our guilty pleasures!

*This episode was originally recorded and set to be published on March 25th, 2021. Due to audio mishaps and Suede not being overly eager to bring more shame on his family, release was noticeably delayed. We apologize for any inconvenience.*

Shows such as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, The Duke of Death and His Maid, Next Life as a Villainess, How the Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom and many more! • Guess who's back, back again. That's right, and this time around, Suede and Chris are taking a look at many of the new shows this summer season. How many, you ask? Too many. Dragon maids, opera schools, and more isekai than truck-kun could ever hope to hit, this season has it all. Which ones do we think will rise to the top? Which ones will sink like a stone? Find out in this episode of Deep Anime Dive!

    Time Stamps:

    (0:00 - 10:24) Introduction

Chris and Suede chat about what kind of antics they've been up to.

    (10:24 - 11:38) Hot Topical

There's some kind of sport thing going on in Japan right now.

    (11:38 - 14:17) Summer Preview Debut!

    (14:17 - 16:25) My Hero Academia: Season 5

Chris breaks down some of the issues he has with the latest season.

(16:25 - 19:29) The Dungeon of Black Company

A decent enough isekai comedy about a scummy guy getting endlessly beat down by his own karma.

    (19:29 - 23:25) Kageki Shoujo

A slice-of-life anime that takes place in an "opera school" of sorts. It had a promising start.

    (23:25 - 28:16) Life Lessons with Uramichi-Oniisan

Depression comedy about a children's TV show host who is desperately trying to find meaning in his life.

    (28:19 - 33:03) Girlfriend, Girlfriend

Harem anime where the MC decides, "Why not date all of them? What could go wrong?" Suede likes it; Chris is on the fence.

(33:03 - 37:13) The Honor at Magic High School

Spin-off sequel of The Irregular at Magic High School. Suede didn't know that when he watched it but he can confirm it is probably best to watch Irregular first.

    (37:13 - 41:24) Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 2

Dragons! Maids! If you liked season 1, you'll like season 2. If you haven't watched season 1, we would strongly recommend you check it out; it's a good one.

(41:24 - 46:45) How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom

Isekai about a guy who saves a kingdom through sound fiscal policies and lengthy diplomatic meetings. If you enjoyed the economic escapades of Spice and Wolf, check this one out. It's honestly good.

    (46:45 - 51:45) That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2

Season 2 has a lot less action and lot more talking. Chris says the story and characters are still just as good though.

    (51:45 - 57:59) Tsukimichi - Moonlit Fantasy

Isekai where the hero is rejected by the goddess for being too ugly so he decides he's going to build his own world, with blackjack and hookers. Off to a good start. Recommended for those who like over-powered MC's and/or spider girls.

    (57:59 - 1:02:22) My Next Life as a Villainess Season 2

Continuation of the reverse-harem isekai. Looks to be as good as season 1.

    (1:02:22 - 1:09:37) Remake Our Life

MC gets a chance to re-do his college years and finally realize his dream. Recommended for those who like The Pet Girl of Sakurasou or Eizouken.

    (1:09:37 - 1:15:12) Jahy-Sama Will Not Be Defeated!

Reverse isekai where Jahy must find a way to survive in the human world without her powers or minions to back her up. Will she be defeated? Never! Will she cry? Absolutely!

(1:15:12 - 1:21:41) The Duke of Death and His Maid

An unusual, fairytale romance story about a boy who kills everything he touches and a maid who teases him endlessly. While there is some comedy, it's actually a much more serious anime than it first appears. Suede highly recommends giving it a shot.

    (1:21:41 - 1:26:44) Love Live! Superstar!

The newest season of Love Live gets two big thumbs up from Chris. If you like idols, moe-blob, or light hearted slice-of-life anime, this is a great one for you.

    (1:26:44 - 1:33:35) Peach Girl Riverside

A promising adventure fantasy with a horribly botched release schedule. Wait until all 12 episodes are out so you can watch the show in chronological...

  • After a prolonged absence full of tech issues and lost audio, we are back! This time around Chris and Suede will be talking about their favorites (and least favorites) of the past season. There is much to discuss for this first season of what is promising to be a most excellent year of anime!

    Time Stamps:

    (0:00 - 3:10) Introduction

    (3:10 - 16:50) Hot Topical

Suede shares some sad news regarding the Nijisanji Vtuber agency. We follow it up with some good news about the new Evangelion movie. Has Hideaki Anno saved the series?

    (16:53 - 1:25:11) Winter 2021 Review

Suede and Chris talk about their top picks as well as some duds. Chris once again watched way more anime than Suede and maintains his Lord Weeb title for another season.

Suede's Favorite: Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki

    Chris's Favorite: Re:Zero Season 2 Part 2

    (1:25:12 - 1:31:59) Outro

Apologies once again for the "break" and, hopefully, we can un-lose some of the missing episodes soon.

  • This time around Chris and Suede are looking back on all of the shows they've watched in 2020. We talk about new favorites, as well as the Big Sads we encountered. We definitely maybe don't talk about Vtubers. Suede doe no't reveal more shameful secrets. Deep Anime Dive is a professional podcast. We promise.

    (0:00 - 14:06) Intro and Chatting

Chris and Suede start the episode by ending their friendship. Nekopara rears its cat-eared head almost immediately. Fan service, Vtubers and the Monogatari series are also discussed.

    (14:06 - 46:46) Winter 2020

Suede talks about Bofuri, Hanako-kun and Somali. He crowns Eizoken as best of the season.

Chris talks about Chihayafuru and A Certain Scientific Railgun.

My Hero Academia and Nekopara are also discussed.

    (46:46 - 56:33) Spring 2020

Chris talks about Fruits Basket, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, and My Next Life as a Villainess.

Suede talks about Brand New Animal. But not because he's a furry.

    (56:33 - 1:02:42) Summer 2020

    Chris talks about Re:Zero.

Suede watched nothing because he's lazy.

    (1:02:42 - 1:22:22) Fall 2020

Suede talks about Wandering Witch Elaina, Moriarty the Patriot and Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle.

Chris talks about Love Live, Tonikawa and Haikyu.

    (1:22:22 - 1:37:03) Best of the Year

Suede gushes about Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear for way too long. Like, seriously, calm down.

Chris crowns Kaguya-sama as his anime of the year.

(1:37:03 - 1:49:41) The Big Sad / Worst of the Year

Chris nominates Magia Record, Rent-A-Girlfriend, and Yashahime.

Suede nominates In/Spectre and Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.

    (1:49:41 - 1:58:57) Wrap up and Outro

Some final thoughts on the year. Suede is not a furry.

  • This week we dive into shark-infested waters! Tread carefully, for Death Herself abides here. The Ancient Ones beckon you to come closer. At the end, a chance for rebirth. Time traveling detective.

That's right, we're talking about the Vtuber explosion that is taking over YouTube. Chris and Suede have succumbed to the anime waifus and discuss their (very) short journeys from curious viewers to die-hard simps. What are Vtubers? Who are Vtubers? Why are Vtubers? All this, and more, in this episode of Deep Anime Dive!

    Time Stamps:

    (0:00 - 1:39) Introduction

    (1:40 - 9:43) Hot Topical

Chris and Suede talk about the upcoming 4th Evangelion movie as well as the recently released Demon Slayer movie. Chris is super excited.

    (9:44 - 31:48) Fall 2020 Anime Season, Initial Impressions

Suede gives his 'Episode 1' impressions on The Great Pretender, Wandering Witch Elaina, Moriarty the Patriot and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear. Almost all of them had very promising starts. The bear one might be a dud.

Chris watched Yashahime, Tonikawa, Haikyu's newest season, and Love Live Series 3. He'll be watching them all to the end, though he laments that the newest Love Live isn't living up to the previous series.

    (31:48 - 1:23:19) Vtubers, Vtubers, Vtubers

Chris explains why it's his fault we got into this mess in the first place. He describes his First Contact and subsequent journey into the abyss. Suede's life is also ruined. We discuss our current, favorite Vtubers. Suede passionately defends the Holostars (Izuru is best cat boy). By the end, we thoroughly destroy any credibility we once had as rational humans.

  • This time around, Chris and Suede talk about the (Pirate) King of all anime shows, One Piece! Where do you even start with a series spanning decades with nearly a thousand episodes? Well, might as well start from the beginning! We start with some fascinating insights into Oda Eiichiro's inspirations for the original manga. Then, we dive right into episode 1 and beyond!

One Piece is a massive series so this time around we simply take a look at the highlights of its earliest arcs. You can expect more episodes centered around specific arcs and even specific characters later on the down the road but we shall leave it here for now. After all, there are, oh so many more anime to discuss!

    Time Stamps:

    (00:00 - 1:21) Introduction

    (1:22 - 13:44) Hot Topical/What We're Watching

Chris and Suede discuss the Dr. Stone Season 2 announcement (January 2021, get HYPE!). We also geek out about the new, upcoming Haruhi Suzimiya light novel. Oda Eiichiro announces the end date of One Piece.

Chris has been watching Haruhi Suzumiya and Zarigoto this week. He also has some choice words about the Denpa Kyoshi anime.

Suede has been watching Ghost Stories (dub) and goes on a bit of a tangent about the history of that series. He also watched The Wizard of Oz anime series, courtesy of Crunchyroll's Click of Random.

    (13:45 - 31:04 ) Oda's Inspirations

Chris and Suede discuss the three major inspirations for One Piece. First, is Vicky the Viking, an adventure anime from the mid-1970's. Next, is the Dragonball manga because, honestly, who hasn't been influenced by that series? Finally, and surprisingly, Oda was hugely influenced by The Wizard of Oz!

(31:06 - 49:20) One Piece: East Blue Arc

Where it all started! We discuss the introduction of some of the main cast with a special focus on Usopp because he's special. We also hone in on Zoro's fight with Mihawk in Episode 24. Then, we muse on the importance of the Loguetown sub-arc (episodes 45, 48-53).

    (49:24 - ) One Piece: Alabasta Arc

Chris and Suede discuss the shift in tone of this second arc of the series. Chopper makes us cry and we are introduced to a lady with way too many hands. We also take a closer look at the Little Garden sub-arc (episodes 70-77). Finally, we examine Smoker's character in the aftermath of Alabasta's civil war.

    (1:03:19 - 1:15:20) One Piece: Skypiea Arc

Basically, this whole arc is Oda flexing his world-building skills. We are introduced to a whole new land complete with its own economy, technology, religion, and political disputes. We also talk about Luffy's epic fight with God Himself, Eneru!

    (1:15:22 - 1:23:00) Conclusions

Question of the Day: What is YOUR favorite One Piece episode? Favorite Character?

Chris and Suede explain the focus and style of a typical DAD episode. And get sidetracked almost instantly.

    (3:54 - 16:04) Hot Topical

We talk about Crunchyroll's recent subscription changes. Spoiler: we're not thrilled. Suede brings up the recent Uzaki-chan firestorm on Twitter and relishes in the chaos.

    (16:04 - 1:16:40) Anime Origins

Chris and Suede talk about how they first got into anime, early obsessions, and evolutions of taste. We each share a handful of our favorite shows, as well as some recent shows we really like. We talk about our meeting in Japan and our many thrift store escapades. Suede would like to, once again, stress that he didn't do anything super illegal while in Japan.

    (1:16:40 - 1:22:05) Conclusions

And, no, that isn't a typo there. Lettres is French for, well, letters.
