  • Sixty years ago, medical trail blazer and veterinary orthopedic surgeon Lincoln Parkes built the first “dog cart” for his surgical patients. They could wheel themselves about while they recovered from surgery and maintain their strength. Since then K9 Carts, the business born of Dr. Parkes’ simple contraption, has kept millions of dogs mobile from Florida to Nepal.
Dogs use wheelchairs to recover from surgery, but also during recovery or illness. Their humans, some of whom join us for today’s show, have adaptations to make, but those are well worth it to care for their dogs with disabilities. There’s even a UK charity to help owners who can’t afford wheels.

  • The Humane Animal Welfare Society in Waukesha frequently takes over the custody of dogs from over-crowded shelters in Southern states where they face the risk of euthanasia. These dogs have a higher likelihood of finding a forever home in Wisconsin. The trips to bring these dogs closer to a better life can be grueling and expensive. In November of 2022, one of those trips went horribly wrong.

  • Deaf dogs don’t get adopted, and we tend to feel really badly if our own dogs go deaf. What ignorant humans we are! On today’s show we hear from leading voices in the deaf dog advocacy community, and they set us straight. Turns out that if you can train, care for, and live with a hearing-enabled dog, you’ll love training, caring for, and living with a deaf dog, too. And yes, sign language for dogs is a real thing, and it works, just as well as voice commands.
Deafness can even be a doggy superpower. These dogs can perform with zero distractions in high volume circumstances that would make a hearing-enabled dog spin out. In fact, deaf dogs have broken two Guinness World Records.
It’s a lot to take in, but we promise, you will reform your own attitude toward hearing after listening to our guests today … and you’ll also have some simple ways to test your dog’s hearing at home.
    Guests
Terrie Hayward is the founder of Positive Animal Wellness, an online resource for all-around positive reinforcement training that also specializes in deaf dogs.

Christina Lee is the founder of Deaf Dogs Rock, a 501-c3 nonprofit whose mission is to spread education about caring for, training, and living with a deaf dog.

  • Titer testing has been around for a couple of decades, but it is now growing in popularity. The test indicates whether a dog has enough anti-bodies to be protected against certain diseases. But the test results can be used for seemingly contradictory purposes. Today on the show, we explore the ins and outs of titer tests, to give you a nuanced perspective on the benefits and risks that come with the current vaccine recommendations.

Carol and Chris met while working at an event in Nevada, U.S.A. Neither were looking for romance, but they were both in love with a beautiful dalmatian.
When Martina wanted to explore Europe, she had to leave her beloved horse and find a more travel-friendly companion animal. Her sweet new puppy didn’t just give her freedom: she also got a new career and a new love.

  • In this episode of Dog Edition – Hound Headlines we look at the following news stories
Britain’s Ugliest Dog has been crowned.
Four-year-old Peggy, believed to be a Pug and Chinese Crested cross (a ‘Pugese’) The competition was organized by a printing company. Peggy won a pamper session at a pet salon. Salon manager Sam Burton said: "I think she's really cute in her own way."

Which dog has the strongest bite?
Some scientists did a study a few years ago and it’s resurfaced in the news this week. The top three were as follows:
    (1) The Kangal has the strongest bite of any breed of dog – an impressive 743 psi. This makes them particularly good at guarding livestock from predators in their native Turkey
    (2) The Dogue de Bordeaux has a fearsome bite strength of 556 psi - although this breed is notoriously so lazy they are unlikely to often use it.
    (3) The Mastiff's impressive 552 psi bite has been used to great effect over the years in everything from guarding villages to hunting wolves.
    Oodie for dogs!
The Oodie has just launched its popular sherpa fleece hoodie for dogs! It’s available in pink, blue and white and made from their famous super-soft, ultra-warm Sherpa fleece just like their famous Oodie wearable blankets.
Dogs (and their owners) have to use the service entrance in New York
NY Times has an article about how tenants of some apartments in New York never see the grand lobbies and elevators they pay for because if they come and go with their pet they have to use the service elevator and doors
Is this fair? What about residents with allergies in lifts where hair may linger in carpets?
Two dogs who ate things they shouldn’t have
Luna is in a rescue shelter in Ireland and ate a tin of dog food, including the tin. The vets bill was £1200
A Labrador ate a £600 electricity voucher/coupon before her owner could redeem it, luckily the QR code was the only important part of the letter and that bit was intact so could be scanned
Vet in the UK who has taken in 10 dogs because their owners wanted them euthanized
A vet called Sharon Williams has taken to rescuing healthy dogs that were going to be put down. Currently has 20 dogs, 17 horses, nine cockerels and two cats who were all unwanted.
Many are young animals with behavior problems caused by lack of discipline or exercise or both

  • Dog breeding can be a highly controversial topic. Why bring more puppies into the world when there are still dogs needing homes in shelters? In today’s episode, we explore that perception with some thoughtful input from two of our expert guests.
A lot goes into the process of becoming a responsible dog breeder: What costs are involved? How do you actually “breed” dogs? What breed should you choose? How do you even get started?
We hear from one breeder in Canada who went all the way to Brazil to find exactly what she was looking for to start her line of dogs. And did you know that some dogs require artificial insemination? Do you know how much that COSTS?
Once mom is through labor and the so cute pups arrive, the intensive labor for humans is just beginning. Raising them is a hands-on endeavor, and then playing lifelong matchmaker for the little darlings is not as easy as you might thing. Everyone wants a cute puppy, but who will be a great match, and who will give up on your sweet little ball of fluff and send them back to your loving arms?
If you’re thinking it’s all worth it because they make a lot of money, you might be sobered by the financial reality check our guests share. To lighten the mood, we end with a jolly tale of a Christmas birth.

  • If you take a look at your dog, it’s not always clear what its body parts are used for. Sure, eyes are for seeing, ears are for hearing––but why is a dog's nose wet? And why do some of them have floppy ears? Dogs have an extra set of front claws that don’t even touch the ground. What do those do? And as for anal glands … why in the world do they need to be expressed?
In this episode, Jim and Clare shrink down to the size of a flea and take an exciting tour of your dog’s body. A panel of experts joins our hosts to make heads or tails of serrated lips, corkscrew tails, and carpal pads. Buckle up … things are getting messy.

  • Today on the show is our Christmas celebration! We are sharing the story of Jenine Stanley who was born legally blind and spent much of her life believing she did not need a guide dog. Everything changed when she moved to the city. Finding she needed help navigating the busy streets and noisy atmosphere, she found her first guide dog. While it may not have been love at first sight, it was love at first “feel.” Jenine now works to help others receive the love and assistance that only a service dog can give.
To celebrate her beloved dogs, Jenine writes a new Christmas poem every year. In this special episode, we perform her version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”.
Grab a cup of cocoa and snuggle up with your pup, because it’s about to get real cozy!

  • Some say humans learns best through story, and when you look at the history of dogs in folklore, you see plenty of evidence.
One story about one single dog can influence the way humans feel about dogs – or that type of dog – for years, decades, centuries, even millenia.
For thousands of years, seeing seeing a black dog was a good sign, a helpful warning from the spiritual world … or something quite sinister. Author D.S. Nelson calls forth some ancient stories so we moderns can see just how far we’ve come.
Or have we? Dr. Stanley Coren pitches in with a thoroughly contemporary tale of a vicar’s wife who saw a ghostly dog figure and attributed a death to it. New folklore tales like this have impact on the daily life of millions of black dogs. Superstitious human folk are not lost to the mists of time, as folklorist Mark Norman reminds us.
Of course, some folklore is positive, like the guardian dogs you find in tales throughout the centuries, and even in contemporary literature. Why, even Disney’s eternally popular Lady & The Tramp is based on a folk tale about a loyal Welsh hound.
Folklorist Ceallaigh MacCath-Moran weighs in with insight about how folklore is created every day in unusual ways. For example, every episode of Dog Edition creates lore … so listen today, and every week, to find out what tall tails future humans will tell.

  • This episode is the second installment of Wag The Vote!, our dog-centric, non-partisan, on-going campaign to encourage voter participation. Dogs are the ultimate “good citizens” … and we think they want us humans to be good citizens, too.
In this episode: dog mayors. (Yes, that's a thing.)
Are dogs being elected to public office a sign of democratic collapse? Political hijinks to install a figurehead, a mere puppet for the masters pulling the other end of the leash?
Or are they the natural end result of civically engaged communities?
Today, we talk about the how and the why of successful canine campaigns for mayor.
Unless it’s happened in your town, you might not realize there are quite a few animal mayors, especially in America. From the first mule candidate elected in 1938, to a town that has had animal mayors since 1998, we discuss the good, the bad, and the downright ridiculous.
A very special thanks to the Tacoma Library in Washington state for helping us track down the clippings of Boston Curtis' 1938 election.

  • The cost of pet care has skyrocketed in the last ten years, and no, it's not just inflation. We’ve demanded better medical care for our non-human family members … and the industry has responded.
When vets are asked to do more than “give a shot” … a vaccine, antibiotic, or steroid … the medical standards rise. And so do costs. State-of-the-art equipment costs money, as do overhead and labor.
Good medicine costs good money, it turns out. Today, we do a deep dive into the inner workings of the veterinary medical industry and its complex economics.
We explore the heavy impact the pandemic has had on veterinarians and their clinics. Why are so many mom-n-pop practices selling to corporate networks? Why have so many veterinarians and veterinary technicians left the field, even as demand rises? Is pet insurance a good option, or is it only adding complexity to an already-tangled situation?
Historical inefficiencies must be set aside to modernize the industry … are there innovations coming that will help veterinarians help more dogs with even better medicine?
