Twiggy took over the company that would become Fortescue in 2003 and developed it into one of the world's four major iron ore miners in a little over a decade (and became Australia's second wealthiest person in the process). • Dylan Pargiter-Green is a Director and Financial Advisor at Bold Wealth. He specialises in helping older Australians prepare for retirement.

We wanted to get specific in today's episode and so today we work through a case study of Mr Equity and Mrs Mates. In particular, they want to know if they'll be better off in retirement if they maximise the use of their offset, their superannuation or use debt recycling. So Dylan has crunched the numbers and is presenting the scenarios back to Mr Equity and Mrs Mates in today's episode.

Want to follow along as we go? Dylan has prepared this presentation that outlines the three scenarios.

  • Artificial intelligence has been the biggest story in markets this year, but is it overhyped? Today's guest thinks it is unlikely to live up to investor expectations in 2025.

In this episode we speak to Sumit Gautam, a former private equity executive and founder of Scalar Gauge, a hedge fund trying to take a "private equity style of investing to the public markets".

    In this conversation he unpacks:

His investment philosophyWhy private equity outperforms and how he is taking that approach to public marketsThe divergence between the tech economy and the real economy Why the AI narrative is unlikely to live up to investor expectations in 2025How he would advise investors that are overweight magnificent 7 tech stocks Why he is investing in software companies over AI

Sumit is participating in the Hearts & Minds conference on 15 November in Adelaide, where a dozen of the world's best investors pitch their best stock idea all in support of funding medical research. In this interview we close by discussing the conference and why participating is important to Sumit.

  • Over the past few weeks, both Bryce and Ren have revealed their full portfolios. On today’s episode, we speak to Owen Rask and ask him what is in his portfolio.

Find out the 1 individual stock (yes, just one!) that Owen continues to hold, how he approaches ETFs and managed funds and the big change he made to his portfolio a couple of years ago.

That's not all we cover in a big episode of Equity Mates:

The US dock workers strike and how it could affect Australia OpenAI's latest funding round and Sam Altman's big payday How US elections affect stock markets What is in Owen Rask's portfolio

**A quick note: Between recording and releasing this episode, the US dock workers paused their strike until 15 January. So the discussion about how the strike could impact the global economy is now outdated, but may become relevant again post 15-January**

  • Don't look now, but the Aussie stock market is breaking records. The first quarter of the 2025 financial year (i.e. July to September) was the best opening quarter since 2013. And that is despite plenty of negative headlines (never forget News.com.au's "horror global bloodbath" from the start of August).

Just another reminder that timing the market is nigh on impossible. That's why we love a consistent, automated approach that invests regularly in the market on up-days and down-days.

Enough about our investing philosophy, because we're covering a lot in this episode of Equity Mates:

The Aussie stocks that led the charge this quarter (how about Zip up 94%!)Australia has delivered a budget surplus for the second consecutive year Koala Airlines is trying to go where Rex and Bonza failedMr Beat Up joins us on the podcast to chat about Boeing's year from hellAdam Dawes joins us for another edition of Pimp my Portfolio

  • Insurance. It’s more interesting than you think.

Over the past year we've been on a journey with Phil Thompson from Skye Wealth to sort out our own insurances. Both Bryce and I (Ren) have done the meetings, filled out the forms and received advice from Phil and the team. Our big takeaway: we were woefully underinsured, and we'd hazard a guess that you are too.

Join us on this episode as we continue to understand the world of personal insurance and how we can get it right, including:

What kinds of insurance we should consider at different stages of life What insurance we can pay for with superannuation How we manage the level of cover we receive through superannuation Some tips and tricks to calculate the cover you need

If you want to relive the journey, you can check out our two previous episodes with Phil on our website.
