Year-end reflections can be painful. I am here to make it less so. In this episode of How Not to Run a Business, I’m talking about the mental and emotional challenges of looking back on your year as an entrepreneur and small business owner.
I’ll walk you through the seven common mistakes people make when reviewing their year, and how to approach it with a clearer perspective. We’ll cover things like:
Balancing the good and the bad – because it’s rarely all one or the other.Making sense of your finances without getting overwhelmed.Setting goals that are actually achievable.Recognising what was within your control and what wasn’t.The value of getting an outside perspective and documenting your progress properly.Reflection doesn’t have to feel like a punishment or a pointless exercise. Done well, it’s an opportunity to acknowledge your achievements, learn from what didn’t go to plan, and prepare for the year ahead with a bit more clarity.
So, if you want to start the new year on the right foot, this one’s for you.

Ever thought about starting a business whilst you're working full-time?
Well Mark did exactly that. He started an ice cream company when he was working a hectic job at Virgin Atlantic.
He didn't just start a little something on the side, he went all in to launch a brand new ice cream brand to challenge an already saturated and competitive market.
It didn't end well.
Mark very kindly agreed to come and share his story with us. And boy, it is a story!
I am very proud to bring you this episode. Mark is an incredible man. Not only has he had an amazing career to Virgin Atlantic and British Airways but he's a thoroughly decent human.
This episode is back to back with honesty, great advice and tips on How Not to Run a Business!

It's almost mid way through 2023 and I have been reflecting on the year so far. I have been checking in with my goals and plans for the year. It got me thinking about how, we business owners, we're generally on one of two paths in our business journey. In this episode I pick apart what they are and ask some key questions for you to ponder to assess and evaluate your goals in business and life.
I also talk about one of the key mistakes people make with their approach to their business and life.
The question is, which path are you on?

Dr Fiona Peters is a UK based leading expert in Neurodiversity in the workplace and in her personal life, as well as an authority on the impact of the mixed-race classification in organisations and families.
She has ADHD and she was diagnosed in her early 50s. We sat down to talk about ADHD, failure and how to heal post-diagnosis.
Fiona has a mission to help support people in business with ADHD. Using her extensive experience and her personal experience of having ADHD we had a fascinating conversion about her journey to diagnosis and what impact that has had on her personal and professional life.
We touch on the experience of being diagnosed in an adulthood as children of the 70s and 80s and growing up in a world where little was understood about ADHD and neurodiversity.
It was a very deep, raw and honest conversation that I know will support those with ADHD or thinking they may have it.

Mindset is something we talk a lot about and it's the foundation for us all being successful. The truth is, we are going fail in our journey to grow and succeed. It's a part of life. An important part of failure is your mindset and approach to how you deal with failure.
In this episode I discussed the relationship between your mindset and success. How does it impact on your ability to recover from failure. I open up about my grappling with failure since closing my business and a realisation I saw about my mindset and how it was stopping me and holding me back.
