In this bonus episode of Man Talk, for World Mental Health Day, I take the opportunity to reflect on the first series of Man Talk, my plans for the future of the show, and I also speak about how I'm doing at the moment in addressing my own mental health…

In this episode, the last in Series 1 of Man Talk, I meet with Sean Jones (@seanj_1987). Sean reached out to me in the early days of Man Talk and expressed a desire to talk about his issues with PTSD. Sean served in the army for over 15 years, during which time he was awarded the Military Cross. Sean’s experiences in the army have left him close to ending it all, twice. He speaks openly about his mental health, his relationship with his wife, the army, alcohol and those suicidal episodes. Sean is now on the road to recovery and intends to use his experiences to help others who may be in his position…

In this episode, I meet with Dan Jones (@dad_of_flo) in a café in Oxford, a city which might possibly have the loudest buses in the world, so apologies for any sound issues. Dan is a father of one and has recently married his long term partner, Emily. I first became aware of Dan’s issues with anxiety after I read a blog he’d written detailing his struggles, so I’ve always wanted to hear more, especially as he talked favourably of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a mental health treatment that hasn’t been covered much during the first series of Man Talk....

In this episode, I meet with Lee Adams (@manonamission2018) in London. Lee is a father of one and a passionate supporter of the charity CALM, which is of course the charity Man Talk is produced in support of. I first came across Lee when I heard him on BBC radio talking about men's mental health, and a couple of months later, here we are discussing his own battles, which included a stay in a psychiatric unit, and how he combines his passion for football with raising awareness for CALM. As you'll hear, Lee's incredible desire to help men who are struggling is infectious and I’m certain he’s going to play a major part in helping more men who are struggling in silence, speak up...

In this episode, I meet up with Adam Towlson (@workingclassboy) at a service station on the M40. Our location was based in part on finding a reasonable distance between us but also highlights how desperate Adam was to share his story and help others. Adam is from the West Midlands, he’s married and has two children. Adam’s mental health issues start when he threw himself into an excessive lifestyle which lead to years of illicit prescription drug and alcohol abuse. Although not fully recovered, Adam can now see how mental health can affect people in vulnerable positions as he works supporting people with mental health and substance abuse issues in the community. As you’ll hear, Adam’s honesty and experiences highlight just how mental health issues can lead to reckless decisions, but his passion to help others is testament to how far he’s come…

In this episode, I’m in London with renowned editorial fashion hair stylist, Neil Moodie (@neilmoodie). Lots of people will know Neil for his work with Vogue Magazine amongst others, but what might come as a surprise is Neil’s battles with his mental health. Neil reached out to me after the launch of Man Talk and was keen to share his experiences with anxiety and depression, having suffered with both for most of his life; his father also suffered with his mental health and Neil was keen to discuss their relationship and how it impacted him growing up and beyond. In trying to deal with his issues, Neil has explored a number of different coping strategies and treatments, so it was great to hear his varied experiences (NB. he was keen to point out he’s also successfully used acupuncture for a number of years but missed this out during our chat). This is an incredibly honest, open and powerful interview from Neil, and I’m sure his experiences will resonate with many men out there…

In this episode, I’m in London with Simon Hooper, who a lot of you will know from Instagram as @father_of_daughters. Simon is known for his amusing portrayal of modern fatherhood and the ups and downs of being a hands-on dad to four girls. Over a beer we discuss all things parenthood, including the anxiety he experienced after learning he was going to become a father at just 24. We also talk about how he’s dealt with the pressures created by the social media spotlight, how he struggled to deal with his mother’s illness, and his advice to anyone experiencing mental health problems…

In this episode, I’m in Berkshire taking a walk with Tom Cox and discussing his experiences with anxiety. Tom is married to his long-term partner Danny and they have an adopted son. Tom works in digital marketing for a major toy brand but is also a prolific parenting blogger and you can find him on Instagram at @unlikelydad. I’ve known Tom for a little while now but had no idea about his mental health issues. I suppose it just goes to show, you never know what’s going on inside someone else’s head. I was so pleased Tom wanted to open up for Man Talk, I hope you enjoy it…

In this episode, I travel to Bristol to visit popular children’s author, Mark Lemon (@the_dad_author). I first came across Mark last year when he wrote a moving piece for The Guardian newspaper detailing the murder of his father when he was just 12 years-old. Mark talks about the grief he’s suffered all his life and how he’s now using his experiences to help others through his charity links…

In this episode, I visit Connor Magee (@dads_and_donts), and over coffee in his leafy Surrey garden, we chat about his PND (Postnatal Depression). Connor is a father to two and works in finance. Speaking about his experiences in such a public forum is very much a first for Connor, so to hear him talking so openly about how it has affected him and his relationship with his son, says a lot not only about his personal bravery but also about how far we’ve come when it comes to men opening up...

In this episode, I talk with Matt Read (@foxsaidwhat) in a sunny park in Bristol and discuss his depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Matt is a step-dad and dad, and has his own digital marketing agency. Matt has recently started speaking up on Instagram about his mental health, and I was keen to explore why this might be. We also hear about how his relationship with his father has shaped the way he is now.

In this episode, I provide an introduction to Man Talk, discussing why I've launched the show and how I hope to help tackle men's mental health. I also talk openly about my own experiences with mental health, which have had a huge impact on me all through my adult life.

In this episode, I travel to Kent to speak to firefighter and father of two, Mat Riley, and discuss his experiences with anxiety. Many of you will know Mat from The Great British Bake Off and from his popular Instagram and YouTube channels @thelifeofrileyfamily. Mat has suffered with anxiety for most of his adult life, and in this incredibly honest chat, we talk about his low points, his coping strategies and his hopes for the future.
