  • What are staple crops and what role do they plan in sustainable, regional food systems?

We’re talking with Michelle Ajamian, founder of Shagbark Mill, about localized food systems, growing and processing staple crops like corn and beans and we’re going to explore how growers, producers and consumers come together to decide what kind of food system we want for ourselves and our communities.

Michelle Ajamian launched the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative in 2009 and she is the cofounder of Shagbark Seed & Mill, an organic processing facility dedicated to the development of a regional model for the production and processing of staple grain, bean, oilseed, and nut crops.

Today, Michelle is joining us on the show to talk about her work at Shagbark Mill, staple foods and the role that they play in a sustainable local food system.

  • Grow your best garden ever with tips and tricks from author and YouTuber Tony O’Neill! After listening to this interview you’ll be ready to grow a healthier and more productive vegetable garden than ever before!

Tony O’Neill has been creating educational gardening content for the last fourteen years and in 2020, he launched the wildly popular YouTube channel Simplify Gardening. Tony believes gardening’s appeal is linked to nature’s generous response to nurturing, which is proven by his growing near-record-sized cabbages (67 lbs.), squashes (131 lbs.), rhubarb, and potatoes in abundance. Tony is joining us on the show to share some gardening tips and tricks and to talk about his new book Simplify Vegetable Gardening.

If you revel in nature's response to your gardening and are curious about the science behind it, Simplify Vegetable Gardening is your guide. The first book to blend botany, biology, and earth science with food gardening, it introduces an exciting, science-driven approach to growing more food. In Tony's words, it's "the culmination of my four decades tending the earth, learning its secrets, and respecting its cycles."

  • We’re kicking off the year with a seedy conversation! We’re sitting down to chat with Jere Gettle, owner of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, America’s largest heirloom seed supplier!

We talk about Jere’s gardens and his favorite things to grow, what it’s like living at the Baker Creek village and some his favorite offerings from the 2024 Whole Seeds Catalog!

Before the interview, Bevin shares his thoughts on a recent article in the winter edition of Edible Wow Magazine. On page 39, author Courtney Burk has written an amazing article on the many ways that we can enjoy eating squash... and not just the flesh of the fruit! Burk interviews a handful of farmers and chefs that share insights on eating squash flesh, skin and leaves. But what this article fails to mention is how easy it is to press a decadently delicious oil from the squash seeds!
