This week Part Two of my outline of considerations on how to talk with your clients about Sustainability at Events
Building on last week's episode I bring you ideas on making sure to pitch your sustainability talk as framed by outcomes, avoiding insider terms and tech-talk. With a reminder that this is information that your clients WANT, even if they don't ask for it or don't know how to ask for it.
When you are handling your clients my advice, first and foremost, is to incorporate the considerations on your side and use it as a tool to make your clients life better and give added value, rather than burdening them with trying to understand or dictate the wisest, most sustainable choices.
Build it into your onboarding with your clients, make sure to use simple and understandable language, then present outcomes to your clients whenever you have Sustainability considerations in mind so they can see the benefits of your expertise. Help them understand how the Sustainability metrics from your work and your vendors are a marketing, education and communication benefit that they can roll into their publicity about the event. Meanwhile of course, you can use it in your metrics for your office as well.

*One Simple Change TODAY*
Catering - Your ONE simple change for today is (for planners) ask for and/or (for caterers) provide a local and seasonal alternative menu option when planning your menu.
Benefits:
-By highlighting to the planning/stakeholding team your knowledge of your food sourcing you are showing your expertise
-This gives the event the opportunity to show off to attendees with more education, shared values demonstrated, and a more delicious in season option
-Even is the menus do not change, everyone is able to make a more informed choice based on information in ADDITION to cost, instead of exclusively focused on bottom line. Look out for options when it cost the same but is a double duty benefit.

2025 - International Women's Day is feeling pretty intense but we can always make small better choices.
Ways to support women inside and out of the events industry with your event choices:
- Letting your vendors know that having a split of genders in your staff is important to you
- Intentionally design agendas to include diversity of gender and lifestyle representation
- BUY from Women Owned Businesses
- Creative an environment professionally and for attendees where it's an expected part of the culture that people will share their pronouns
- Surprise Tip: if the price of imported items seem too good to be true it's because that item is either made by disadvantaged and possibly enslaved people (including children) or made in a way that destroys the environment for those same people. So buy less and buy carefully.

This episode is a bit of a discovery mission working through the idea of resource management and my experience with post event material disposal.
Have you been stuck with a mountain of wasted brand new materials, furniture, tech, etc. at the end of your events? I have been really frustrated by the lack of consideration for the end of events - don't stop your planning at the closing party. To maximize your sustainability and reducing your waste make a clear plan for every item that you bring onsite, how it will be leaving site! In fact, add a column to your event spreadsheet, next to the shopping and pick lists, add DISPOSAL/RETURN. Indicate what items will be returned and where, what is garbage, what is recycling, what is donation and who is picking it up. In the end you will be able to track and reduce your own waste as well as take credit for all of the landfill diversion, and donations.

*apologies for some crackle in this episode
How can we use the concept of Triple Bottom Line in Event sustainability? Measuring a business or event's success by People, Planet, and Profit (the three bottom lines) can help you see more of the benefits and outcomes of your events and your event business and it can help you avoid blindly making mistakes and getting stuck in a dead-end strategy.
Start using the Triple Bottom Line framework as a way to discuss your metrics for success and your outcomes for your individual events and with your stakeholders. Greenwashing: the act or practice of making a product, policy, activity, etc. appear to be more environmentally friendly or less environmentally damaging than it really is. attr. Merriam-Webster.com
How are you making sure to share your sustainability ambitions without having to worry about Greenwashing? If you're like most planners and event companies your solution has been to SKIP IT, not worth the risk, no reason for it to take your time. Hopefully, this episode will help you see the benefit and how you can start mining sustainability and your company's goals as content and conversation with your audience and clients.

In this episode, I talk about using psychology and behavioral economics to influence your sustainability outcomes at your events. I use meal choices as my example for how preset selections can influenced your attendees do what you're hoping they will do. I explain how “nudges” can guide attendees toward more sustainable options.
I reference the book Thinking Fast and Slow; the research of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky; and site Freakonomics and Choiceology podcasts for further insights into consumer behavior.

In this episode, Alycia Drube dives into the surprising environmental costs of AI. From its massive energy demands to the water used in cooling data centers, AI's impact extends far beyond the digital world. Did you know that some companies implementing AI have reversed their carbon-neutral goals, backsliding by as much as 60%?
Alycia challenges you to think differently about AI, viewing it as a resource-intensive tool rather than a must-have for every task. She offers practical tips for eco-conscious tech use, like switching to browsers such as Ecosia, which prioritize clean energy and reforestation.
