an intriguing concept: loving your inner lizard brain to foster more
peace and calm in your life. Understanding the lizard brain is crucial,
as it plays a significant role in the anxiety landscape. We explore its
origins and functions, emphasizing that this ancient part of our brain,
often referred to as the amygdala, is deeply intertwined with our
survival instincts. It's designed to protect us by triggering responses
to perceived danger, making it essential for our safety throughout
evolution.I take listeners through an understanding of how the
lizard brain operates, highlighting its responsibility for our primal
instincts—fear, hunger, and arousal. This instinctual focus on survival,
while necessary, often leads to anxiety when the amygdala becomes
overly reactive. Instead of viewing the lizard brain as an enemy in our
mental wellness journey, I advocate for a compassionate approach,
encouraging listeners to "pet the lizard" and reassure it that
everything is okay. By acknowledging and tending to this primal part of
our brain, we can better navigate our daily anxieties.#anxiety#lizardbrain#amygdala#ancientbrain#reptilianbrain#survivalinstincts#fear#stresshormones#calmingtechniques#selfsoothing#mindfulness#breathingexercises#bodyawareness#relaxation#innerchild#emotionalregulation#safety#presentmoment#overcominganxiety#anxietycoach#podcast#emotionalintelligence#selfawareness#nervoussystemregulation#traumainformed#stressmanagement#copingmechanisms#anxietyrelief#mentalwellness#psychologicalwellbeing#mindbodyconnection#innerpeace#resilience#emotionalhealth#brainscience#psychology#wellbeing#mentalhealth#GinaRyan#ACP#AnxietyCoachesPodcast

this episode, I delve into the crucial practice of feeling our feelings
and how this essential step can unlock healing from anxiety. Although
the phrase “feel your feelings” is often heard, I invite you to reflect
on whether you truly embrace the concept or if it creates resistance
within you. My goal today is to shed light on the unseen burdens we
carry, frequently without realizing it, and to emphasize that allowing
ourselves to process emotions isn't merely a tender topic—it's a key to
reclaiming our natural state of peace and calm.I discuss how
suppressing emotions leads to an internal buildup that affects both the
mind and body. Many of us navigate life, donning a smile and
white-knuckling through adversity, yet beneath the surface, we may feel
restless or anxious, often unable to pinpoint the cause. This
unprocessed emotional weight can sometimes manifest as various physical
symptoms—ranging from digestive issues to headaches. I stress the
importance of recognizing these signals, understanding that these
physical sensations can be the body's way of reaching out, signaling
that there are feelings that need to be felt and processed.Throughout
our conversation, we explore how emotions influence our physiology,
causing measurable changes in blood flow, hormonal levels, and even
muscle tension. I discuss the cyclical nature of anxiety and how
unacknowledged feelings can create a loop of discomfort and anxiety,
amplifying physical symptoms and leading to a cascade of avoidance
behaviors. As we unpack this cycle, I encourage a shift in
perspective—viewing anxiety not as an adversary but as a messenger
calling for our attention and understanding.#anxiety#emotionalhealing#feelingthefeelings#unprocessedemotions#mindbodyconnection#suppressedemotions#anxietyasmessenger#carljung#panicattack#overstimulation#nervoussystem#fightorflight#stressresponse#groundingtechniques#copingstrategies#mentalhealth#emotionalregulation#breathingexercises#presentmoment#selfcompassion#anxietycoachespodcast#ACP#GinaRyan

    Summary

In today’s episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into a question that many individuals grappling with anxiety often ask: "Am I going crazy?" This inquiry is not just an expression of fear; it reflects a deeper, shared human experience that arises when we find ourselves overwhelmed and seeking relief from the tumult of anxiety and panic. I want to reassure those who have found themselves whispering or even shouting this question during moments of distress that you are not alone. The frequency with which I encounter this question—whether in coaching sessions, online forums, or spontaneous conversations—underscores its universal nature.

I share from personal experience the debilitating sensations that accompany heightened anxiety, where the mind races with worst-case scenarios and the body feels out of control. It’s in these intense moments that individuals may convince themselves they are losing their grip on reality. However, I firmly emphasize that these overwhelming sensations are not indicators of madness, but rather physiological responses to stress. By examining the science behind panic and anxiety, I aim to ground listeners in awareness of their bodily reactions.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve deep into the journey of overcoming anxiety, emphasizing the fundamental need to move beyond managing symptoms to genuinely surpassing them. Inspired by Viktor Frankl’s quote, I highlight the crucial space between stimulus and response, where our freedom and power reside. It is imperative to understand that this space is not merely a pause but a pivotal moment for growth and happiness, especially when navigating the tumultuous waters of anxiety, panic, and PTSD.

I discuss the significant difference between managing anxiety—through tips, tricks, and props that only keep it at bay—and the transformative process of moving beyond it entirely. While coping mechanisms are necessary to help us navigate daily challenges, they should never become a crutch that defines our existence. We often utilize these techniques to alleviate acute anxiety, allowing us to momentarily calm the storm and gain a broader perspective on our experiences. This episode challenges you to recognize that accepting and surrendering to your feelings, as daunting as they may seem, is a crucial step towards genuine relief.

Accepting anxiety is not the same as embracing it; it is about understanding that real change must come from within. I stress the importance of taking personal accountability in this journey, shifting away from the desire for external solutions, and recognizing the internal nature of this transformation.

    Summary

In this episode, I delve into the intersection of two

profound frameworks for understanding anxiety: the teachings of Dr.

Claire Weeks and the polyvagal theory developed by Dr. Stephen Porges. I

aim to illuminate how these two perspectives can complement and enhance

our relationship with anxiety, focusing not on eradicating it, but on

understanding and working with it in a compassionate manner.

    We

begin by grounding ourselves in the essence of Dr. Claire Weeks' wisdom.

Weeks was a trailblazer in the treatment of anxiety, offering a message

that resonated deeply with those struggling with panic and fear. Her

approach emphasizes that anxiety is not a pathology but rather a natural

response, and she passionately reinforced the idea that recovery is

achievable. Her method, encapsulated in four critical steps—facing,

accepting, floating through, and allowing time to heal—provides a gentle

yet powerful framework for engaging with anxiety. I explore each of

these steps, illustrating how facing the fear can diminish its hold on

us, accepting our current feelings can foster healing, and floating

through the sensations can transform our experience from one of

    resistance to one of ease.

    Having established the foundations

laid down by Weeks, I then transition to the polyvagal theory, a

scientific framework that elucidates how our nervous system responds to

    cues of safety and threat.

    Summary

In this episode, I'm sharing 14 effective strategies to help manage rising stress levels in our increasingly hectic lives. With the myriad of challenges we face, it's essential to recognize the symptoms of stress before they escalate into overwhelming anxiety or panic attacks. As we go through these techniques, I emphasize the importance of being proactive about self-care while also adapting our routines to find balance amidst chaos.

First, I discuss the concept of taking a timeout through activities like yoga, listening to calming music, or practicing meditation. These brief moments of respite can help clear our minds and bring us back to a state of calm. Alongside this, I highlight the necessity of eating balanced meals. Nutrition plays a fundamental role in our well-being, and I advocate for mindful eating habits—stressing the importance of avoiding processed meals and sugars that can exacerbate anxiety.

I also delve into the impact of caffeine and alcohol on our mental state. These substances can aggravate anxiety, and I encourage listeners to consider eliminating them during stressful times to aid in their healing process. Sleep is another critical area we can't overlook; I remind everyone to prioritize rest and recognize their individual sleep needs, encouraging the adaptation of sleep routines that suit them best.

    Summary

    In

this episode, I explore the concept of a sensitized nervous system and

how understanding it can aid in regaining mental and physical calm. A

common question I receive pertains to the workings of the nervous

system, particularly during times of anxiety or high stress. Today, I

take a step back to provide foundational knowledge about nervous system

sensitization, discussing its nuances and implications for individuals

experiencing anxiety, OCD, and related conditions.

    I begin by

defining nervous system sensitization, explaining that it results in a

heightened state of alertness where even benign stimuli can evoke

overwhelming reactions. This state can fluctuate on a spectrum—from mild

sensitivity to intense overreactions. I share my personal experience of

intense overreaction, illustrating how prolonged exposure to stressors

can lead the nervous system to respond dramatically to everyday

triggers. It’s crucial to understand that when the nervous system is in

overdrive, physiological symptoms like heart palpitations, dizziness,

and muscle tension are common manifestations that signal an

    overstimulated state.

A significant aspect I delve into is the

cycle of fear and adrenaline that perpetuates this sensitization. Each

encounter with fear leads to an adrenaline surge, which subsequently

prompts more fear, creating a self-reinforcing loop. Recognizing this

cycle, often unacknowledged by individuals caught in it, is vital for

breaking free. I emphasize that many people experience these bodily

reactions without any immediate distressing thoughts or external

triggers, leading to confusion about their sensations.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into the intricacies of feeling anxious versus being highly sensitive, offering insights to help listeners understand their emotional landscapes better. Building upon the foundation laid in episode 725, I revisit the first 13 characteristics of highly sensitive individuals, encouraging those who resonate with these traits to embrace their unique experiences. Recognizing the challenges that come with heightened sensitivity is crucial; it's not about something being "wrong" with you but rather about understanding and managing these traits.

I explore the subtleties of high sensitivity, starting from the deeply rooted aversion to violence and cruelty, to the emotional exhaustion that can arise from absorbing others’ feelings. Each identified trait, such as experiencing time pressure as overwhelming or being easily startled by sudden loud noises, serves to paint a fuller picture of what it means to navigate the world as a highly sensitive person. My goal is to empower listeners by reinforcing that they should not internalize negativity associated with these feelings; rather, recognizing them can lead to essential self-growth and awareness.

    Summary

In this episode, I delve into the experience of being a highly sensitive person (HSP) and how it can often be mistaken for anxiety. I discuss the unique traits of HSPs, who make up about 20% of the population and possess an ability to process stimulation deeply and feel emotions intensely. While being highly sensitive can provide exquisite advantages such as heightened empathy and an acute awareness of details that others might overlook, it also comes with challenges that can lead to feeling overwhelmed in everyday life.

I explore the breadth of feelings and responses that accompany high sensitivity, emphasizing the dual nature of these traits. For instance, while heightened empathy can be considered a gift, it also means that HSPs might find themselves emotionally exhausted from absorbing the feelings of those around them. I share insights from notable experts on the topic, including Elaine Aron and Jen Graneman, to reinforce that sensitivity is not a weakness but a distinctive trait that warrants respect and understanding.

Throughout the episode, I encourage listeners to reflect on how their sensitivities manifest and how they might identify as an HSP.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into the transformative practice of expressive writing, drawing on the groundbreaking research of psychologist James Pennebaker. I explore how expressing anxiety through journaling can significantly promote both emotional and physical healing. I emphasize that many people feel intimidated by journaling, often worrying about finding the "right" way to do it. Today, I introduce listeners to a powerful method backed by Pennebaker’s extensive studies, which suggests that the efficacy of writing is rooted not in the medium, but in the authenticity of the expression itself.

I start by discussing the often-debated question of whether it’s better to write by hand or to type out journal entries. Drawing upon Pennebaker’s findings, I've found that the key to reaping the benefits of expressive writing lies in the depth of engagement, regardless of the format. While some individuals may experience a stronger connection through handwriting due to its slower, more reflective nature, others may feel liberated when typing. Ultimately, what matters most is the act of putting words to paper, as it allows feelings and thoughts to find a voice.

Throughout the episode, I highlight Pennebaker's assertion that emotional expression not only fosters healing but also improves physical health. I share insights into the profound impact of releasing pent-up emotions through writing, likening it to opening a valve that eases internal pressure.

Writing helps people organize thoughts and give meaning to a traumatic experience.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I dive deeply into the idea of "Wisdom for the Soul," presenting a unique approach to meditation through a multi-tradition lens. As we explore this concept, I aim to demonstrate how grounding oneself in various sacred texts can profoundly aid in fostering peace and calm within the mind and body. Building on previous discussions, I reintroduce the practice of meditating on passages from notable spiritual sources, encouraging listeners to engage with the wisdom found within these texts.

I guide my listeners through a meditative experience, where I share five different passages from various traditions. Each passage offers its own depth and insight, serving as a vehicle for listeners to connect more intimately with their present state of mind. I emphasize the importance of personal resonance, inviting individuals to discover which words may speak to them most powerfully, or perhaps inspire them to find their own meaningful verses for regular meditation.

As we begin this meditative journey, I gently prompt listeners to tune into their breath, to observe its natural rhythm—whether fast or slow. This mindful awareness lays the groundwork for a calming experience. I stress the release of tension while settling comfortably, allowing body and mind to enter a state of relaxation yet alertness, which is crucial for effective meditation. With each sacred passage, I encourage listeners to mentally repeat the words, inviting the wisdom of each phrase to permeate their thoughts and feelings.

    Summary

In this episode, I delve into the pervasive issue of fearing other people's opinions and how it can impact our sense of self and well-being. I start by emphasizing the importance of acknowledging this fear and how it often manifests when we're feeling less confident. A poignant quote from Elsa Joy Bailey sets the tone: "Don't let other people's opinions burn holes in your dreams." This sentiment encapsulates the struggle of letting external judgments overshadow our true aspirations and desires.

I explore the different ways this fear can be expressed, particularly through habits like closing down and suppressing our true selves. It’s essential to recognize that our fears influence a myriad of our daily interactions and decisions. Often, this results in a cycle of people-pleasing behavior that doesn't serve us. As we move towards self-acceptance and valuing our own opinions, we may face pushback from those in our lives who are accustomed to our previous tendencies. I reassure listeners that it’s perfectly valid to prioritize one's own voice over the expectations or preferences of others.

I introduce three actionable strategies designed to help listeners stop fearing other people's opinions. The first method involves letting go of what I call "what if" questions, which can easily spiral into negative thinking. By consciously recognizing these queries—like “What if they don’t like me?”—we can challenge ourselves to consider more positive alternatives and relinquish control over what is ultimately outside of our purview.

These practices include meditation (in this case, with a spiritual passage), slowing down and training the senses. Creating more space around us helps us more easily integrate all the activities going on in our lives. Being mindful of what information we allow into our consciousness (such as through the media we consume) can help us cultivate inner peace more easily. In this episode, I explore the journey from overwhelm to ease by sharing three transformative practices aimed at fostering a calmer life. Drawing from Eknath Eswaran's impactful eight-point program featured in his book "Words to Live By," I emphasize how these timeless approaches to inner peace remain relevant even decades after publication. The teachings that resonate with me are rooted in spiritual wisdom and offer practical methods to soothe the nervous system amidst the chaos of modern living.

The first practice centers around the essence of meditation. I highlight Eswaran’s guidance on establishing a dedicated space for meditation, explaining the importance of consistency in practice. I read excerpts from his work that underscore the significance of focusing on carefully chosen passages, such as the prayer of St. Francis, during meditation sessions. This structured approach not only carves out quiet moments in our bustling lives but also helps us internalize positive thoughts, slowly transforming our outlook and interactions.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into the transformative power of mantra as a tool for healing, inner peace, and overall well-being. Inspired by a recent discussion in our Facebook group about the habits that aid in managing anxiety, I recognized the need to explore the often underappreciated practice of mantra. While meditation is frequently celebrated for its benefits, the concept of mantra deserves special attention for its unique ability to cultivate calm and focus through repetition.

Drawing upon the teachings of Eknath Eswaran, a pioneer in the integration of meditation into Western education, I emphasize how mantra—derived from the Sanskrit words for "mind" and "tool"—serves as a method of centering our thoughts and invoking deeper levels of awareness. Eswaran's approach highlights how a mantra can become a living force in our lives, shaping our consciousness and directing us toward peace and love. I share personal reflections on my journey with mantras, including how consistency in practice has profoundly impacted my emotional landscape over the years.

    Summary

In this episode, I delve into the pressing issue of negativity and its pervasive impact on our mental well-being. I share five effective strategies to help you keep negativity at bay, empowering you to reclaim your sense of peace and calm. Negativity sneaks into our lives, often exacerbated by common stressors such as hunger, fatigue, and loneliness, leading to a skewed perception where we view the glass as half empty. This mindset not only heightens anxiety but can create obstacles that hinder our ability to embrace life fully.

I explore how negativity can sabotage our efforts and how it can create unnecessary struggles in our lives. Acknowledging our inherent negative bias, a survival mechanism inherited from our ancestors, I emphasize the importance of transitioning from this instinctual reaction to a more thoughtful and rational approach. By cultivating awareness and choosing positivity, we can break this cycle and start manifesting a brighter outlook.

The episode outlines five practical tips to foster a positive attitude. The first tip encourages visualization; when negative thoughts emerge, I advise transforming them by conjuring up positive imagery — something that embodies peace or happiness. Next, we delve into the benefits of journaling, where I emphasize the significance of documenting not just grievances but also everyday gratitudes, pushing aside negativity by celebrating the positive aspects of our lives.

    Summary

In this final episode of our enlightening conversation with Dr. Drew Ramsey, we delve deeper into essential strategies for managing anxiety and fostering mental wellness. Building on the topics discussed in earlier episodes, we explore actionable tenets rooted in both personal experience and scientific research, aiming to provide listeners with a comprehensive toolbox for achieving peace of mind and emotional balance.

One of the pivotal tenets discussed is movement, specifically highlighting the profound impact of dance on our mental state. Dr. Ramsey shares a heartwarming story about a patient rediscovering her love for tango, illustrating how joyfully engaging in movement can elevate our mood and mental health. He emphasizes the importance of integrating more dance into our lives, whether through dance classes or spontaneous dance parties at home. This practice not only enhances physical well-being but also nurtures emotional resilience.

Nutrition is another critical aspect we explore. Dr. Ramsey discusses the significance of paying attention to how our diets can affect anxiety levels, pointing out the roles of certain foods and the benefits of fermented items. The conversation unveils research that links dietary choices to our mental states, advocating for mindful eating habits to foster a healthier relationship with food and, by extension, with ourselves. The exploration of food sensitivities and how they can manifest as anxiety brings a nuanced understanding to our conversations around nutrition.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I engage in a compelling continuation of my discussion with Dr. Drew Ramsey. We delve deeper into the intricate relationship between self-awareness and mental health, emphasizing that this crucial skill requires continuous nurturing throughout different life stages. Through the lens of Dr. Ramsey's book, "Healing the Modern Brain," we explore scientifically-backed strategies for enhancing self-awareness, notably the practice of journaling. Dr. Ramsey articulates how self-reflective processes, such as journaling, can activate our prefrontal cortex—a vital area of the brain linked to decision-making and executive functioning. He shares practical advice for incorporating journaling into our daily routines, pointing out how just a few minutes can significantly enhance our emotional clarity and mental fitness.

We also discuss real-world applications and personal anecdotes that highlight the transformative power of self-awareness. One particularly poignant story involves Charlotte, a woman whose pandemic-driven drinking habits led her to seek help. Through self-awareness and a structured accountability process, she achieved remarkable change, illustrating how building awareness can lay the foundation for recovery from challenges such as substance abuse. The conversation invites listeners to consider their own mental health journeys and the pivotal role self-awareness plays in them.

    Summary

Dr. Drew Ramsey, a board-certified integrative psychiatrist and a proponent of nutritional psychiatry, appeared as a guest on the Anxiety Coaches Podcast hosted by Gina Ryan. In the episode, they delve into the significant relationship between nutrition, lifestyle choices, and mental health, emphasizing how the over-reliance on pharmaceuticals in mental health care can overshadow the benefits of a holistic approach that includes food and other lifestyle factors.

Ramsey, who has an impressive academic and professional background—including a position as an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University and the founder of the Brain Food Clinic—shares insights from his latest book, "Healing the Modern Brain: Nine Tenets to Build Mental Fitness and Revitalize Your Mind." He stresses that the current mental health epidemic demands an enhanced focus on building mental fitness through practical lifestyle changes. This approach, he argues, provides a broader and more meaningful path to emotional well-being rather than simply relying on medication.

The conversation transitions to Ramsey's personal experiences with mental health struggles, touching on moments from his college years when he faced low energy and cognitive fog. He reflects on the adjustments he made when moving from rural Indiana to urban Manhattan for his psychiatric training, discussing how these life changes impacted his mental health. Acknowledging the complexity of mental health, Ramsey highlights that it's essential to discern the interplay between various life challenges, from parenting stresses to negotiation of personal identity.

    Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, I delve into the transformative power of affirmations, focusing on those that promote safety, strength, and peace. As we navigate through high levels of stress and anxiety, the use of positive affirmations serves as a gentle yet effective tool to ground ourselves in the present moment. I invite listeners to engage deeply with these affirmations, whether they're in a quiet space for reflection or on the move, emphasizing that the flexibility of this practice allows for maximum benefit in various settings.

We begin by acknowledging the common struggle of being lost in thought, frequently dwelling on future worries or past regrets, rather than embracing the here and now. The discussion centers around the importance of shifting our mindset back to a place of safety, where we can recognize that in this very moment, we are okay. The affirmations I share are aimed at soothing the nervous system and helping to cultivate a sense of calm amidst life’s turbulence. Listeners are encouraged to embrace whichever affirmation resonates with them most, tailoring it to create a personal mantra or prayer that they can revisit regularly for grounding.

Throughout the episode, I elaborate on why affirmations matter, especially in moments when anxiety leads our thoughts to spiral negatively. By introducing calming messages, these affirmations serve to interrupt harmful thought cycles and remind us of our inherent safety and support.
