Story 1: These Roads in Cherokee Are Expected to Be Repaved This Summer
Cherokee County has received $2.7 million in state funding to resurface over 12 miles of local roads, with a total project cost of $3.9 million due to a 44% local match funded by a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The county submitted a list of 41 roads for the 2025 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant program. The resurfacing work, covering areas like Smithwyck and Towne Lake Hills subdivisions, will be bid in early 2025 and completed by summer. The county aims for a 20-25 year repaving cycle, planning to resurface an additional 15-17 miles in fiscal year 2025.
Story 2: Georgia Elector Wendell McNeal Cast Ballot For Trump
Morgan County resident Wendell McNeal was among 16 Georgia electors who cast their ballots for President Donald Trump and JD Vance on December 17 at the state capitol. Appointed by the Georgia Republican Party's executive board, the electors conducted the voting in an orderly manner, chaired by Josh McKoon. McNeal emphasized the significance of the process, which involved signing six certificates of the vote. These documents, along with the Certificate of Ascertainment, are sent to various officials, including the U.S. Senate and the archivist, to confirm the election results. The paperwork had to reach its destinations by December 25 for the official count on January 6.
Story 3: Newton County westside youth facility grant not imminent
A $4 million federal grant for a youth facility in Newton County remains inaccessible due to unresolved issues. Outgoing Commissioner Alana Sanders sought an update, learning that a site and budget are needed for the grant, approved by HUD, to be awarded. The grant application, submitted without county authorization, was incomplete. The county lacks funding partly due to federal budget resolutions. A location dispute persists, with a withdrawn offer for land on Brown Bridge Road and other sites considered. The county has also allocated $4 million in SPLOST funds for the facility, but site selection remains a hurdle.

Story 4: Georgia Digital Driver’s License and ID for Holiday Air Travel
If you're traveling through airports this holiday season, consider adding your Georgia Digital Driver's License and ID to your smartphone wallet. This digital ID can expedite your journey through select TSA PreCheck checkpoints, including Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Available on Apple, Google, and Samsung platforms, the digital ID is free and voluntary, though you must still carry your physical license. Spencer R. Moore, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Driver Services, encourages Georgians to embrace this digital convenience to enhance travel and service experiences.
Story 5: Feds sue city of Brunswick over homeless shelter
The Justice Department is suing the city of Brunswick for attempting to close The Well, a faith-based homeless shelter affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The lawsuit alleges that Brunswick violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act by trying to shut down the shelter, which adopted safety measures suggested by local police. The city blames The Well for unrelated criminal activity and filed a state court suit to close it. The federal suit seeks to prevent the city from interfering with the shelter, arguing that the city's actions impose a substantial burden on religious exercise without a compelling interest.

Break: Ingles Markets 9Story 6: BioLab fire: How likely is closure – and more unanswered questions
Residents near the BioLab chemical plant in Rockdale County are concerned about potential health effects and environmental contamination following a fire that led to evacuations and disruptions. They are filing lawsuits and demanding accountability from BioLab, which is responsible for cleanup plans. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division oversees the process, but there's no set timeline. The fire involved chemicals that released toxic gases, prompting health concerns. Lawsuits seek plant closure and damages, while community efforts focus on long-term health tracking. BioLab has set up a reimbursement process for affected residents, but frustrations remain over delays.
Story 7: Steffen Thomas Sculpture Donated To His Museum
The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art has welcomed back "Harmony," a sculpture by Steffen Thomas, thanks to a donation from William and Julie Brogdon. Created in the late 1950s from pine wood, "Harmony" depicts joined male and female half-faces and is now part of the museum's permanent collection. The Brogdons, long-time supporters, also contributed funds for the sculpture's exhibition and conservation. The museum, dedicated to preserving Thomas's legacy, was founded by his family in Morgan County, Georgia, after plans for a studio museum in Atlanta were unfeasible. It showcases Thomas's prolific artistic career.

STORY 5: Planning Commission Votes Against Off Road Dirt Course
The Morgan County Planning Commission unanimously voted against developing an off-road vehicle dirt course on Bonner Lane, citing concerns about noise and property value loss. Property owner Brandon Lopez, absent from the meeting, sought a zoning amendment to allow the course, claiming it was an agricultural operation. Residents opposed the plan, fearing it would deter homebuyers and disrupt the area. This isn't Lopez's first zoning conflict. The commission discussed improving public notification for such proposals. The final decision rests with the Morgan County Board of Commissioners at their next meeting.

Story 1: Georgia Power hiking rates
Georgia energy regulators approved a 3.5% rate increase for Georgia Power customers, raising average residential bills by $5.48 per month starting January 1. This is part of a series of increases over the past few years, totaling over $40, partly due to new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle and rising fuel costs. Commissioner Lauren McDonald supported the increase but expressed concern about its timing amid easing inflation. Georgia Power's lawyer, Brandon Marzo, stated the hike is necessary due to ongoing investments.
Story 2: Rising Student Anxiety Strains Counselors: ‘We Need More Resources’
School counselors in Georgia are seeking more support as student anxiety and emotional struggles rise. Amanda Johnson, a counselor at Armuchee Primary School, highlights the urgent need for mental health resources and reducing stigma. The American School Counselor Association recommends one counselor per 250 students, but current ratios are much higher, with Johnson serving 500 students and Candace Hammond at Pepperell High School handling 430 students each. Previously funded by CARES Act, mental health initiatives are now underfunded. Despite partnerships with local health organizations, resources remain insufficient. Counselors also educate parents and teachers to better support students.
Story 3: Archer Aviation Completes Construction of Manufacturing Facility in Covington
Archer Aviation Inc. has completed its 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, ARC, in Covington, Georgia, adjacent to Covington Municipal Airport. The facility will produce the Midnight eVTOL aircraft, with production starting in early 2025 and aiming for two aircraft per month by year-end. Archer plans to manufacture 650 aircraft annually by 2030, in partnership with Stellantis, which provides capital and expertise. The facility represents a $118 million investment and aims to transform urban travel with sustainable, low-noise aircraft. Governor Brian Kemp and Congressman Mike Collins praised the project for its innovation and job creation potential.

With over 17 years of service, including 10 years at Little Tikes Early Learning Center and five years at Lemon Tree Academy Day Care, she has become a beloved figure. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Herschel Walker, a former University of Georgia football star and longtime friend, as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas. Walker, who lost a 2022 Senate race to Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, has been a successful businessman and advocate for youth sports. His friendship with Trump dates back to the 1980s when Walker played for Trump's USFL team. Walker joins other Georgians nominated by Trump, including former Sen. David Perdue and former Sen. Kelly Loeffler. All nominations require Senate confirmation, with Republicans set to control the Senate next month.

Ascend Elements, a lithium-battery recycling company, announced plans to produce lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) from used lithium-ion batteries at its Covington facility starting in 2025, aiming for up to 3,000 metric tons annually. The company's innovative process significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to traditional methods, producing 2.27 kg of CO2 per 1 kg of Li2CO3. Nationwide, 119.3 million people are expected to travel, slightly exceeding the 2019 record. The increase is driven by consumer spending, steady economic growth, and strong employment. Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)
Story 1: Trump moves to dismiss Georgia election interference case
Donald Trump’s legal team has asked the Georgia Court of Appeals to dismiss an indictment accusing him of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. They argue that under the U.S. Constitution, a president-elect, like a sitting president, cannot be indicted or prosecuted. Trump, recently reelected to a second term, will take office on Jan. 20. The lawyers also claimed political bias by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, citing Trump’s recent electoral victory in Georgia. This follows the dismissal of two federal indictments against Trump after his November reelection.
Story 2: UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson killed outside investor conference in New York City
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot and killed Wednesday outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan while entering for the company’s annual investor conference. The masked gunman fled on a bicycle, and police are investigating the targeted attack, though the motive remains unknown. Thompson, who took over UnitedHealth Group’s insurance division in 2021, was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital. The conference was canceled following the incident, with UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty acknowledging the seriousness of the situation. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and others expressed shock and condolences over the loss. A police press conference is scheduled to provide further updates.
Story 3: World of Coca-Cola Debuts New Holiday Express at Pemberton Place
World of Coca-Cola is launching the Coca-Cola Holiday Express, a new holiday pop-up railcar experience, starting Dec. 7 and open on weekends through Dec. 29. Partnering with Georgia Aquarium, the festive event includes two railcars providing immersive journeys to the North and South Poles. Guests can enjoy photo ops with Santa, a Coca-Cola surfboard, and seasonal decorations, such as velvet accents and twinkling lights. Visitors also have access to Pemberton Place Park and festive beverages. Access to the event is included with Pemberton Place attraction tickets, with special “skip the line” privileges for same-day tickets to both World of Coca-Cola and Georgia Aquarium. Tickets and details are at worldofcoca-cola.com.

Break: WHEELER FUNERAL HOME (08.08.24 WHEELER OBITS_FINAL)
Story 4: Independent Horror Film Shoots in Bostwick
The independent horror film *Day of Reckoning* recently shot scenes in Bostwick, Morgan County, using locations like the Susie Agnes Hotel and outdoor city areas. More scenes are planned in the coming weeks. While little is known about the plot or cast, it's unclear if the project is related to the 2016 sci-fi film of the same name. This follows *Stranger Things* filming in Madison earlier this year. Georgia’s film production has declined since its 2021-2022 peak due to factors like the writers' strike and international competition. State leaders are optimistic about a potential revival in 2025.
Story 5: Six Georgia Communities Receive Site Development Grants
Governor Brian Kemp announced $9.3 million in grants awarded to six local development authorities in Georgia under the Rural Site Development Initiative. The program aims to boost economic development in rural areas by funding projects like site studies, land grading, and infrastructure improvements. Recipients include Liberty County Development Authority for a new road at Tradeport West, Peach County and Warner Robins for an entrance to Robins Industrial Park, and Dodge County for water and sewer upgrades at Eastman Aerospace Park. Additional funding supports improvements in Brunswick, Screven County, and Dade County. Local contributions matched the grants, which must be used within two years.
We’ll be right back.
Break: Ingles Markets 3Story 6: Willis Subpoena Sparks Debate Over Legislative Power
Former Gov. Roy Barnes, representing Fulton County DA Fani Willis, argued in court that a GOP-led state Senate subpoena targeting Willis was motivated by a political “vendetta” and lacked legitimate legislative purpose. The subpoena stems from allegations of misconduct, including a romantic link with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor in Willis’ case against Donald Trump and co-defendants charged with attempting to overturn Georgia's 2020 election results. Barnes claimed the subpoena was issued improperly after the legislative session had ended and aimed to discredit Willis. Senate committee lawyers countered, stating the subpoena addressed potential legal and fiscal concerns in state laws governing prosecutors and was authorized under the Georgia Constitution’s support of interim committees. The debate continues over the legislative validity of the subpoena process.
Story 7: Help Restore WWII Stearman Biplane and P-47 Thunderbolt
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia is part of the 2024 “Twelve Planes of Christmas” campaign, aiming to raise funds for restoring two vintage aircraft—a World War II-era Republic P-47N Thunderbolt and a Boeing N2S Stearman Kaydet. The Stearman project, dedicated to “Rosie the Riveter,” honors women’s contributions during WWII and includes outreach programs to inspire youth in aviation. The P-47N, a rugged fighter from WWII and post-war Georgia Air National Guard, requires funding for new rims and wing repairs. The campaign, running through Dec. 31, seeks to raise $50,000 for the Thunderbolt and $10,000 for the Stearman’s engine components, continuing CAF’s mission to restore historic aircraft and educate the public on aviation history.

Story 1: With Trump as president, can TikTok in the US survive?
The future of TikTok in the U.S. has been uncertain since 2020 due to national security concerns. Initially, President Trump sought to ban the app, but later reversed his stance, joining TikTok and expressing support. Despite this, legal challenges persist, with a law requiring TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest by January 19, or face a ban. TikTok and ByteDance have sued, claiming a ban violates free speech rights. The court's decision is expected soon, with potential appeals to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, creators are diversifying to other platforms amid the uncertainty.
Story 2: State-Run Hurricane Damage Relief Program Taking Applications
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has introduced a low-interest emergency loan program to aid farmers impacted by Hurricane Helene. The SAFETY 24 Hurricane Helene Relief Loan Program offers up to $500,000 at a 2% fixed interest rate to eligible farmers in disaster-designated areas. The funds can be used for income replacement, operating capital, and repairing or replacing farm structures and equipment. The program aims to support farmers while awaiting further federal relief. Recent assessments estimate agricultural and timber losses from the hurricane at $5.5 billion. Applications are available online.
Story 3: Holiday Concert Planned at KSU
Kennesaw State University's Bailey School of Music will host its 2024 Holiday Concert on December 7 at 2 and 8 p.m. at Morgan Concert Hall. The Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta is expanding its Leadership Experience program with a $50,000 grant from the Atlanta Women’s Foundation. This initiative aims to overcome barriers like financial constraints and lack of volunteers by bringing Girl Scout activities directly to girls through community groups. The program will provide training, books, badges, and supplies to new Girl Scouts in Gwinnett County and four other counties. This effort addresses the urgent need for support among girls, who face high levels of anxiety and economic challenges. The program fosters friendships and offers learning in STEM, civic engagement, and more.

The event, supported by over 70 motorcycle riders and numerous sponsors, featured a law enforcement-led ride through Newton County, followed by a gathering with food, a raffle, and fellowship. Sheriff Brown expressed gratitude to all contributors, emphasizing their crucial role in the event's success and its impact on families during the holiday season.

Downtown Madison came alive with festive cheer last Saturday as Christmas shoppers gathered for the final “Shop, Sip, and Stroll” of the season. Streets adorned with classic holiday décor welcomed both lifelong locals and visitors from across Georgia and even Florida. Shoppers explored nearly two dozen stores offering discounts, giveaways, and raffles, while Madison’s Main Street leaders provided maps and a warm welcome from a decorated tent near the downtown square. Adding to the seasonal magic, live performances, including the Morgan County High School Chorus dressed in Dickens-inspired costumes, filled the streets with Christmas songs. The event was a great success, giving shoppers an early start on holiday deals and special finds.
Story 7: Atlanta Strings Foundation Provides Scholarships To 2 Gwinnett Students
Jamie Parker, a lifelong musician from Snellville, has turned his passion into a mission to support young talent. From learning piano as a child to performing professionally with Bobby Vinton and Ben Vereen, music has always been central to his life. After nearly 20 years teaching orchestra in Title I schools, Parker recognized the challenges financially strapped students face in pursuing their musical dreams. Now, as the owner of Atlanta Strings, he not only provides instruments but also funds scholarships through the Atlanta Strings Foundation. This year, Rodrigo Ramirez and Edwin Cruz-Ventura received a year of music lessons thanks to Parker’s initiative. Dreaming of growing the program to 12 scholarships annually, Parker seeks community and business support to transform more young lives through music.

STORY 1: Covington approves permits for churches
The Covington City Council approved special use permits for two local churches to expand to new facilities. Dovestone Church will use a 39,600-square-foot building on Lochridge Boulevard for services and community programs, with 250 parking spaces available. Although the property is zoned for heavy industrial use, a special permit allows religious activities. A separate permit would be needed for a school. Additionally, Wesley Methodist Church received approval to build on 30 acres on McGuirts Bridge Road, with plans for a sanctuary and parking lot, but no school. Both permits were approved without opposition.
STORY 2: Christmas On Dixie Opens Thanksgiving Night
The Christmas on Dixie display, a beloved tradition in Morgan County, returns on tonight, running through Dec. 26. Located at 2300 Dixie Highway in Madison, this free event features a dazzling array of inflatables and lights, including snowmen, elves, and reindeer. Initially open Thursday to Sunday, it expands to daily hours from Dec. 12. Founded by Shane Seabolt and his family, the display attracts visitors from near and far, even internationally. Donations are accepted, and more details can be found on their Facebook page.
STORY 3: Man charged with stabbing his uncle
In Covington, a stabbing incident on Nov. 21 led to the arrest of 24-year-old Ethan Parks, who allegedly stabbed his 37-year-old uncle during a dispute. The Newton County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene on Pickens Road around 6 p.m. Parks was charged with aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act. STORY 4: Elementary Schools Celebrates Fundraising Success
Morgan County Elementary School's Monster Dash fun run exceeded its fundraising goal, raising nearly $34,000. As promised, the school's administrators spent the night at the school on Nov. 19, engaging in fun activities like card games, hide-and-seek, and a pillow fight. This initiative, led by the PTO, aimed to raise $25,000, with funds supporting teacher grants, educational resources, and enrichment projects. The event fostered a sense of community and excitement among students, who enjoyed seeing their leaders participate in playful activities. The successful fundraiser will benefit various school needs, including technology and sports equipment.
STORY 5: Georgia public health board: Respiratory viruses are low; new infant screening detects threat to hearing
Georgia is experiencing a typical respiratory virus season for COVID-19, flu, and RSV, with new testing protocols for infants to detect cCMV. Dr. Cherie Drenzek noted that virus levels are low, reducing the risk of a "tripledemic." COVID-19 cases are at record lows, mainly affecting those over 65, with a new variant, XEC, emerging. Flu and RSV are following traditional patterns, with RSV concerning primarily for infants. An increase in "walking pneumonia" among young children has been observed. Preventative measures include vaccinations and respiratory etiquette. A new screening has identified eight cCMV cases in newborns.

Jose Ibarra, a Venezuelan man, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Laken Riley in Georgia. Convicted on all 10 counts, including abduction and attempted rape, Ibarra's trial was conducted by a judge rather than a jury. Ibarra, linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, was in the U.S. illegally. The case sparked political debate over border policies, with figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Gov. Kemp highlighted the severe impact on Georgia's agricultural sector, with many farms lacking sufficient insurance. Story 1: State prisons chief pitches case for funding boost
Georgia Department of Corrections officials are preparing for increased state funding to address staffing shortages, infrastructure issues, and inmate health care improvements. The correctional officer workforce has struggled with high turnover rates, peaking at over 40% during the pandemic. Commissioner Tyrone Oliver highlighted challenges in retaining officers due to better opportunities elsewhere. Infrastructure deterioration poses safety risks, and there's a push for more single-bunk cells to reduce inmate assaults. The department also faces issues with contraband and rising health-care costs due to an aging inmate population. Funding for these improvements is expected to be a priority in the 2025 legislative session.
Story 2: Georgia House Republicans Retain Leadership Team
The Georgia House Republican Caucus has reelected its entire leadership team for the upcoming two-year term starting in January. Rep. Chuck Efstration will continue as House majority leader, with Rep. James Burchett as majority whip. Other leaders include Reps. Bruce Williamson, Houston Gaines, and Ginny Ehrhart. Speaker Jon Burns and Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones were also renominated. Despite losing two seats in the recent election, Republicans maintain a 100-80 seat majority over Democrats. The House Democratic Caucus is set to elect its leadership team soon.
Story 3: Rep. Greene Says She's Staying In The House To Help Trump
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene confirmed she will remain in the House, dismissing rumors of a Cabinet role in the upcoming Trump administration. President-elect Donald Trump announced key appointments, including South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security and Tom Homan as "border czar," roles Greene had shown interest in. Trump also named Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense and John Ratcliffe as CIA Director. Additionally, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new "Department of Government Efficiency" to advise on reducing government spending, though it won't be part of the federal government.

Story 4: University System Sets Enrollment Record
The University System of Georgia has reached a record high enrollment of nearly 365,000 students this fall, marking a 5.9% increase from last year. This growth is largely driven by a 27% rise in out-of-state students since 2020, attributed to factors like Georgia's open status during the pandemic. Dual enrollment has surged by 53.5% since 2020, and the system has become more diverse, with increases in Latino and Asian student populations. The Board of Regents approved policy changes focusing on merit-based admissions and hiring, eliminating diversity statements. Additionally, a $25 million renovation of Georgia Tech's basketball facilities was authorized.
Story 5: Automated warehouse services company building distribution center in Georgia
GreenBox Systems LLC is set to invest $144 million in a new distribution facility in Butts County, Georgia, creating over 300 jobs. The 1-million-square-foot automated facility will employ various roles, including automation operators, forklift operators, and logistics coordinators, serving regional retailers. Operations are slated to start late next year. The project was facilitated by the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Butts County Development Authority, and other partners. Job opportunities will be available on the company's career page as they arise.
We’ll be right back.
Break: Ingles Markets 7Story 6: Biden welcomes Trump back to the White House
President Biden welcomed President-elect Trump to the White House for a traditional meeting, emphasizing a smooth transition of power. Despite past tensions, Biden aims to restore the norm of peaceful power transfer. The two leaders planned a private Oval Office meeting, with Biden instructing aides to ensure an efficient transition. Trump, who previously refused to acknowledge his 2020 election loss, did not cooperate with Biden's transition. Vice President Kamala Harris and former First Lady Melania Trump were not involved in the day's events. Biden intends to pursue legislative goals and attend international summits during his remaining time in office.
Story 7: Slim Chickens to Open a Restaurant in Cherokee County
Slim Chickens plans to open multiple new locations in Georgia, including Cherokee County, as part of an expansion by business partners Lance Burns and Mike Waller. They have signed an agreement to open 10 restaurants in the northern Atlanta suburbs, targeting counties like Floyd, Gordon, and Forsyth. The first location is expected by April 2026, though the Cherokee County site is yet to be determined. Burns and Waller, experienced Sonic operators, were inspired by visits to a Florida location. Slim Chickens, known for high-quality food and service, has nearly 300 locations globally.

The park plans to use luxury tents for smaller events and aims to build a permanent facility for larger gatherings of 100-300 people, along with an education center for conservation events. Initial public opposition has subsided, with traffic now routed through the main entrance. Supporters, like Matt Schulz, are enthusiastic about the park's potential for hosting events.

Public To Weigh In On Three-Month Detour Proposed for Old Mill Road Republicans Maintain Majorities in General Assembly Property-Tax Relief Amendments Approved By Voters. Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)
Story 1: Public To Weigh In On Three-Month Detour Proposed for Old Mill Road
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is seeking public feedback on a proposed three-month detour near Rutledge for the I-20 and Old Mill Road Interchange project. The detour aims to expedite construction by closing and replacing the Old Mill Road bridge over I-20, reducing construction time from 15 to 11 months. The 5.2-mile detour would use US 278 and Newborn Road. This project, part of broader infrastructure improvements, supports new developments in Morgan, Newton, and Walton counties. Public comments are open until November 29, with more information available online. Motorists should expect delays and check traffic updates via Georgia 511.
Story 2: Republicans Maintain Majorities in General Assembly
In Georgia's November 5 legislative elections, Democrats failed to reduce Republican majorities in the General Assembly. The GOP maintained its 33-23 Senate majority and 101-78 House majority, losing only one seat to an independent. Most incumbents were reelected, often unopposed. The closest Senate race was in District 48, where Republican Shawn Still won despite controversy. Several newcomers were elected, including Democratic replacements for retiring senators. In the House, close races occurred in minority-populated districts, but Republicans generally prevailed. The Georgia House and Senate will see new leadership as some minority leaders retire.
Story 3: Property-Tax Relief Amendments Approved By Voters. What We Know
A local referendum to reduce property taxes via a sales tax increase is expected in fall 2025. Georgia voters recently approved two statewide property tax-relief measures. Constitutional Amendment One, which limits property assessment increases to inflation rates, passed with 63% statewide and over 70% in Floyd County. Amendment Two, establishing a tax court, and Referendum A, increasing property tax exemptions for tangible personal property, also passed. Amendment One allows a 1-cent sales tax to offset property taxes, pending voter approval. If passed, this would provide tax relief starting in 2026.

Story 4: Cobb Transit Tax Defeated by Wide Margin
Cobb County voters rejected a proposed 1% sales tax for public transportation, with 62% voting against it. The tax aimed to generate $11 billion over 30 years for transit improvements, but faced criticism for its length and timing. Anti-tax activists, like Lance Lamberton, argued it was fiscally irresponsible. Despite Democratic support, including Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, the measure failed, reflecting Cobb's conservative leanings. The defeat means the county's sales tax remains at 6%. The county will continue exploring transportation improvements, including a microtransit pilot program and state-planned toll lanes on I-285.
Story 5: American Pickers' Is Coming To Georgia
The documentary series "American Pickers" is set to film new episodes in Georgia this December. The show, which airs on the History Channel, follows expert pickers as they search for valuable antiques and unique stories. They're seeking leads on hidden treasures, focusing on private collections rather than public venues like stores or museums. If you have a unique item to sell, you can contact them via phone, email, or their Facebook page.

The event, "Lunch with a Veteran," will feature U.S. Army veteran and Reinhardt alumnus Ryan Neill as the guest speaker. Complimentary meal tickets are available for those with a military ID. This initiative is part of Reinhardt's Green Zone program supporting veterans. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP via email.
Story 7: Floyd and Rome Schools Named Leader Schools By State
Several schools in Floyd County and Rome City have been recognized as high-performing Literacy and Math Leaders by the Georgia Department of Education, based on 2023-2024 Milestone data. Literacy Leader awards were given to schools showing growth in reading at or above grade level, with four Floyd County schools honored. Math Leader awards recognized schools with growth in proficient math scores, with five Floyd County schools and one Rome City school acknowledged. This marks the first year for Math Leader awards, highlighting the importance of numeracy skills in education.

STORY 1: Strickland wins fourth term in Georgia Senate
Georgia Senator Brian Strickland, a Republican, won reelection for District 42, securing 58.24% of the vote against Democrat Kacy D. Morgan. Strickland dominated in Walton and Morgan counties, while Morgan narrowly won in Henry and Newton counties. Strickland, first elected in 2018, chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. In the House District 118 race, Republican Clint Crowe defeated Democrat Sharonda Bell with 66.78% of the vote. Crowe led in Butts and Monroe counties but trailed Bell slightly in Newton County.
STORY 2: UGA study: Nearly 6% of pregnant women report marijuana use
A University of Georgia study found that about 6% of pregnant women reported using marijuana in the last month, with many not recognizing its health risks. The study, published in The American Journal on Addictions, used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Among users, 70.9% perceived little risk, despite links to low birth weight and neurodevelopmental issues. Most users were in their first trimester, possibly using marijuana for nausea relief. Lead researcher Mohammad Rifat Haider emphasized the need for education on marijuana's risks during pregnancy and suggested that doctors address misconceptions and screen for substance use, especially in states where medical marijuana is legal.
STORY 3: Sheriff Brown wins Newton with widespread support
Incumbent Sheriff Ezell Brown won reelection in Newton County with 59.45% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger Justin Hipps. Brown, who carried most precincts, expressed gratitude for his fourth term, highlighting his commitment to justice and community. He praised the progress made in community programs and law enforcement practices. Brown also extended a conciliatory message to Hipps, emphasizing unity post-election. Hipps, an investigator with the Newton County District Attorney’s Office, campaigned on improving technology and staffing. He thanked supporters and valued the discussions initiated about the Sheriff's Office's future.

Report Criticizes Georgia's Limited Medicaid Expansion
Georgia Expands Digital Driver's License and ID Program. What We Know
Harris fends off 'garbage' fallout, Trump pushes 'cheating' claims
We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!
Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)
Story 1: Report Criticizes Georgia's Limited Medicaid Expansion
Georgia's limited Medicaid expansion, Georgia Pathways, has enrolled only 4,231 people, far below the projected 25,000, due to complex enrollment processes and strict eligibility criteria. The program requires enrollees to complete 80 hours of work or other activities monthly, a unique requirement among states. Many face challenges with paperwork and fluctuating work hours affecting eligibility. A $10.7 million ad campaign was launched to raise awareness, but its impact is unclear. The Georgia Budget and Policy Institute suggests simplifying enrollment and expanding Medicaid coverage, though state leaders oppose full expansion due to cost concerns.
Story 2: Georgia Expands Digital Driver's License and ID Program. What We Know
The Georgia Department of Driver Services has expanded its Digital Driver's License and ID Program to include Samsung Wallet, allowing Samsung Galaxy users a secure and convenient way to manage their IDs. This integration enhances security and convenience, though currently, it's only valid at select TSA PreCheck checkpoints, like those at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The digital ID is voluntary, free, and doesn't replace the physical ID, which is still required for law enforcement. Users can add their ID to Samsung Wallet through a simple process involving scanning their ID and a face scan for verification. More details are available on the DDS and Samsung websites.
Story 3: Harris fends off 'garbage' fallout, Trump pushes 'cheating' claims
In the final week of US election campaigning, Kamala Harris distanced herself from President Biden's controversial remarks about Trump supporters, emphasizing unity and respect for all voters. Harris campaigned in key battleground states, focusing on a positive vision for America's future and contrasting her leadership style with Trump's. Meanwhile, Trump, campaigning in North Carolina and Wisconsin, continued to claim election fraud and criticized Biden and Harris, framing them as out of touch with Americans. Both candidates are rallying support in a tense political climate, with Trump hinting at rejecting the election results if he loses.

Break: WHEELER FUNERAL HOME (08.08.24 WHEELER OBITS_FINAL)
Story 4: Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation Team Up For Makeover At Baggett Elementary
Baggett Elementary School in Lawrenceville received a $50,000 donation from the College Football Playoff Foundation, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, and School Specialty to revamp its STEM lab. The funds were used to create a vibrant, interactive learning space with new furniture and decorations. The updated lab was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 16. This initiative is part of a broader mission by Peach Bowl, Inc. to support education, focusing on Title 1 schools needing renovation. Alongside Baggett, Lilburn Middle and Magill Elementary also benefited from similar grants, enhancing their media centers.
Story 5: Young Americans Christian Football Program On the Rise
Young Americans Christian School's football team is experiencing a resurgence as the 2024 season ends, boasting a 7-1 record and leading Region 1-AA in the Georgia Association of Private and Parochial Schools' new nine-man football format. Under Coach Josh Hailey, the team has grown to 26 players, a significant increase from previous years. Despite challenges like weather and a local fire, the team has thrived, led by standout players like seniors Jayden Sigur and Caleb Blunt. With a strong freshman class, Hailey aims to build a lasting program, eyeing a regional win and home-field playoff advantage.

"Jesse's Gift," directed by Ken Merritt, debuts on Amazon Prime Video this Thanksgiving. Filmed in Cherokee County, the movie follows a singer-songwriter's journey from loss to redemption, inspired by Merritt's and his brother's real-life experiences. Michael Merritt stars in the film and composed its music. Originally a short film for a screenwriting class, it showcases various Georgia locations like Canton and Atlanta. The trailer is available on Off the Rail Productions' YouTube channel, and Michael Merritt's single and music video can be viewed online.
Story 7: Morgan Approves Safari Park Event Facility
The Morgan County Planning Commission approved an event facility at the Georgia Safari Conservation Park on Monticello Highway, located on 436 acres in unincorporated Morgan County. The park, which opened earlier this year, will develop the facility in phases, starting with open-air events. Traffic will use Monticello Highway, not Clack Road, addressing previous concerns. Additionally, the commission approved a zoning change for Latrice Franklin to place a manufactured home on her property, adjusting lot lines to meet requirements. Discussion on a proposed off-road vehicle course was postponed to November. All decisions await final approval from the Board of Commissioners.

Story 1: Ossoff Bill Targets 'Hidden' Foster Care Placements
U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff introduced a bipartisan bill to enhance federal oversight of state foster care systems, following a Senate subcommittee investigation into child abuse and neglect in Georgia's foster care. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn, addresses "hidden" foster care placements, where children are informally placed with caregivers, often relatives, without court oversight. These placements aren't included in official foster care statistics. The legislation mandates states to report such cases to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which must then report to Congress. The aim is to better protect foster children from abuse and trafficking.
Story 2: Trump stumps in Middle Georgia
Former President Donald Trump held a town hall in Zebulon, Georgia, focusing on religious themes and moderated by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones. Trump emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, pledging to tackle illegal immigration and reduce inflation through energy independence. He highlighted his past achievements in Israel and criticized ongoing legal challenges against him. Trump praised Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp for his hurricane response efforts. The event is part of Trump's campaign efforts in Georgia, a key battleground state, with Vice President Kamala Harris also campaigning there alongside Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen.
Story 3: KSU Students Compete in Elevator Pitch Challenge
Emily Shelton, a Marketing and Professional Sales major at Kennesaw State University, won the 3rd Annual TK Elevator KSU Elevator Pitch Competition. She impressed judges with her innovative pitch, earning first place. The competition involved 24 KSU students presenting their personal brands to a panel of judges from the TKE sales team while riding Atlanta's fastest elevator to the 26th floor of TKE's Innovation and Qualification Center in the Cumberland area.

Story 4: Georgia Early Voters Continue Setting Records
Over 1.8 million Georgians voted early in the first week, with numbers expected to surpass 2 million by midday Wednesday, marking over 26% of the electorate. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger highlighted Georgia's clean voter list, noting a citizenship audit found only 20 non-citizens among 8.2 million registered voters, whose registrations were canceled. Additionally, 156 suspected non-citizens were referred for investigation. Raffensperger praised Georgia's participation in the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) for maintaining accurate voter rolls. Gabriel Sterling dismissed claims of vote-flipping by Dominion machines, affirming no evidence supports such theories. Early voting continues through November 1.
Story 5: Emory Seeks Rome, Calhoun Residents For PFAS Exposure Study
Emory University researchers are recruiting Rome and Calhoun residents for a study on PFAS chemical exposure. They aim to enroll 200 participants, collecting blood samples from those who've lived in the area for at least three years. PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," persist in the environment and human body, with past contamination from carpet companies affecting local rivers. Rome has since improved water filtration. The study will compare local PFAS blood levels to national averages and explore exposure sources, including water, cookware, and packaging. Results will guide potential further research or interventions based on community interest and findings.

Georgia Tech's Student-Athlete Advisory Board is launching the 24th annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive in November, honoring its founder, Michael Isenhour, who started the drive in 2001 to help families affected by 9/11. Toy donations will be collected at Georgia Tech's basketball and football games in mid-November, benefiting the Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter. Fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys, with student-athletes collecting them at game entrances. Monetary donations can be made online via a QR code. Toys can also be shipped directly to Georgia Tech for those unable to attend the games.
Story 7: Coroner candidates talk about duties of the office
At a forum on Oct. 14, Newton County coroner candidates, incumbent Tommy Davis and challenger Kimberly L. Griggs, discussed their approaches to the role. Griggs, focusing on timely death certificate delivery, suggested hiring a forensic pathologist for the county. Davis, with extensive experience, explained delays often stem from autopsies by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation due to backlog. He emphasized the coroner's role in determining death causes and maintaining quick response times. Griggs highlighted her proactive approach in obtaining necessary information for death certificates. Both candidates addressed staffing and resource management within the coroner's office.
