"The Murph" is a workout, which was brought to Crossfit by the military community. The workout is a staple of Memorial day and honors U.S. Navy Seal -- Lt. Mike Murphy, as it is a workout which he himself would regularly do. Mike Murphy died in combat during Operation Red Wings (2005). Along with Murphy, the Seal team consisted of Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson, and Marcus Luttrell. The team was tasked with locating a high value Taliban target. The team was later spotted, and ambushed by over 50 Taliban militia soldiers.
Due to the mountain terrain, communication was not viable from their position during the firefight. Mike Murphy selflessly abandoned his position of cover, and placed himself into a highly exposed position for the purposes of calling for assistance. Murphy successfully made contact with the SOF QRF at Bagram Airfield, but died in this heroic act. Murphy, Axelson, Dietz, and 16 members of the extraction / rescue team were ultimately killed during this operation. Luttrell was the only survivor. The movie "Lone Survivor" is a retelling of this story.
"The Murph" is a tribute to all American soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Its on this day that we, as American's, are tasked with doing something hard and suffering a little, thereby honoring those responsible for our freedom.
