In this episode, Osher talks about how in times of stress his “to do” list grows from an achievable series of tasks into an overwhelming mountain of improbable, high-stakes ideas.
Perhaps you can relate?
As the list gets longer, the stress mounts, the distraction gets worse, the quality of work plummets, your effective ability to complete any of those tasks dwindles and then you start to put other things on the list that make up for the things you’ve now missed on the list.
Thankfully there’s a way around this.
The “To NOT do list”.
Enjoy writing yours.

Sometimes without realising it, we lapse back into old behaviours.
Sometimes we’re hot and we’re cold.
Getting dressed to do a workout and returning emails instead.
Arriving late to an event with no clear reason as to why.
Behaviours we’ve worked hard to change, sometimes rear their ugly heads.
This is what happens when choices we make in a hot state (In the heat of the moment) differ from intentions we have in a cold state (when we are able to reflect on the alignment of our actions and our values).
It’s when we’re in a hot state that we make poor decisions that often lead to shame spirals, frustration or negative outcomes.
Osher reflects on making choices when we’re in cold states in the hope that we can stay on track and choose things more in alignment with our original intention.

We take our daily showers for granted. Orange Sky co-founder Nic Marchesi created a mobile laundry and shower for homeless people. The initial idea was to help people experience the dignity of cleanliness and make things just that little bit easier. But what happened while everyone’s belongings were being washed was arguably even more important.
Orange Sky have created a new podcast called ‘The F Word’. Each episode shares real-life experiences of people experiencing homelessness and hardship, along with the perspectives of Orange Sky’s dedicated volunteers. You’ll hear about the origins of Orange Sky and meet their very first “friend,” learning how simple conversations and clean clothes can restore dignity and hope.
Osher and Nic discuss the misconceptions about experiencing homelessness and hardship, the importance of chatting to people and the inherent dignity of being clean.

To resist change is to resist the very nature of the universe that we are living in. We are moving through space at 230 kilometres per second, change is the only constant in our lives. And yet, when things alter or become different, most of us struggle.
Today, Osher will explore ways to not only embrace change, but celebrate it. Remembering that we are moving through space at all times, can help our problems feel a lot less challenging and a lot more manageable.

Can you draw? How many goes would you give yourself to try before you gave me an answer?
After @theguiltyfeminist host, comedian and writer \@dfdubz dropped by, Osher had a few thoughts on learning, exploring, and how many goes you might give yourself (and what you’re missing out on if you’re not).

You failed? Great!
‘The Guilty Feminist’ podcast host, comedian and writer Deborah Frances-White believes that embracing our failures is the key to success. We won’t always get everything right, but that’s OK. We learn the most by failing.
Deborah Frances-White joined Osher in Sydney while she was in town for the Australian leg of The Guilty Feminist tour. Deborah shares her story of growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness in Brisbane. It turns out Osher and Deborah went to the same theatre sports school at the same time! They discuss privilege versus access, the importance of belonging, what being our authentic selves really means and how improvised comedy can help us trust our instincts.

Who is ruling whom? Are we in charge, or are our phones? Osher was in a Pilates class and the lady on the mat next to him spent most of the class checking her smart watch.
There is so much scientific research that proves that the notifications on our phones are affecting our brains, our lives and how we connect with other people.
We can get control back of our lives, by changing how we interact with our phones. Osher discusses how we can live better lives without notifications.

Reflecting on Jelena Dokic’s episode, in this episode Osher explores the relationship between resilience and vulnerability.
Vulnerability without resilience is dangerous. If you’re vulnerable without the strength to cope, you’re wide open to calamity.
Like being immunocompromised next to someone coughing—you’re incredibly susceptible to harm.
On the flip side, if you’re resilient without being vulnerable, your relationships, creativity, and ability to connect with others suffer.
Vulnerability shows how susceptible you are to danger or stress, while resilience is your ability to recover from it. The good news is, resilience is something we can build and develop, and in this episode, Osher offer up a few key ways to develop that skill.

We have come a long way. Ten years ago when this podcast began, would we as a society have been ready to hear Jelena Dokic’s story?
Australia watched and cheered as Jelena Dokic dominated international tennis. From the outside it seemed as though Jelena had everything. But behind the scenes, a lot more was going on.
There were clues, but the media and society at the time made a joke of them.
Jelena Dokic has revealed her truth in her new book ‘Fearless’. Jelena is honest, open and has begun a conversation that will help all of us to break stigmas, own our stories and keep going.
Content warning: this conversation contains mention of suicide, abuse and trauma. If you or anyone you know needs support, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Have you ever gone through an intersection while driving tired late at night and only when it was behind you did the explosion of adrenaline alert you to the fact that you almost had an accident?
In this episode Osher tells a tale of running through a massive stop sign while he was still drinking and using, describes the wreckage that followed, and the repair work that needed to happen (and continues to this day)
Perhaps this story will help you recognise a stop sign you’ve missed in your own life, or help understand why the person you’ve been trying to send a warning sign to might not be listening.

After Linda Marigliano’s episode on Wednesday, Osher was on a mission to recapture that wonderful feeling of a first kiss.
Using something his shrink taught him years ago, Osher explains how to increase the release of the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin when kissing to the point you’ll be singing that song “feels like the first time”.

Everyone has a story about how we were affected by the Covid Pandemic. In this episode, Osher speaks with broadcaster and DJ Linda Marigliano about being stuck in Australia, away from the man she fell in love with and not knowing if they’d ever make it.
This all happened while she grappled not only her own fertility journey, but working around a life-long tendency to be a people pleaser.
Linda’s has a new book “Love language” and an award-winning documentary podcast “tough love”.

We generally avoid thinking about losing the things we love, but what if deliberately doing so made us love and appreciate those things even more?
In this episode, Osher explores the idea of “The Last Time” (*not the Farnham farewell tour).
With its roots in ancient Stoic practice, “The Last Time” only takes a few breaths to do yet can have a profound effect on the presence and meaning we feel in our day.
It even makes Osher’s wife say “why are you being so weird?” when he sees her again after doing this, which he finds incredibly amusing.

This week, Osher lost two jobs in one day when news broke that The Bachelor Australia and The Masked Singer Australia aren’t being renewed by the network.
What’s hilarious is that it’s not the first time this has happened to him, and in today’s episode he talks about the work he did around this news going public to ensure a stable transition of not only income but also mental health.
If you’ve ever lost a job, or you’ve never thought about what would happen if you lost your current job, this episode offers some powerful insights and tools that may be of help.
Osher refers to episode 80 with John Ferriter, you can listen to it here.

Even if you don’t care about cars, you can’t deny the massive global success of Mighty Car Mods. With nearly 4M subscribers and over 1 Billion views on YouTube, Marty & Moog have been representing the culture of vehicle modification for over 16 years - and they’re only getting bigger.
You don’t care about cars? Then what if I told you that Moog’s actual name is Blair, and Blair is a prolifically talented multi-instrumentalist and composer who has created the soundtracks to hundreds, even thousands of commercials that you could probably whistle if I mentioned one.
The Maccas jingle?
If you heard it in Australia, Blair played it.
Same guy.
Not only that Blair is one of the hosts of Top Gear Australia, and alongside JLP and Beau Ryan they are taking this legendary show that was never really about cars and turning it on its head.
After speaking with Blair, Osher described him as one of the great ones. A true inspiration who’s been through some darkness and come out the other side.

Osher describes how yesterday he discovered an underlying freeze response which he didn’t realise was playing havoc with his life.
Join him for an exploration in to how if we’re not in “fight” or “flight” we can become immobile, literally frozen and unable to speak.
(He also manages to work the hunting habits of South African Killer Whales into this conversation, which was a nice surprise. You won’t believe their favourite snack).

After his chat with Jodi on Wednesday, Osher was reminded about his experience with a fascinating way to develop theory of mind: The Three Chairs Technique.
While it sounds like mental musical chairs, it’s actually quite powerful and super accessible.
Have you tried this one? What techniques do you use when you come across adversity?
