  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“Despite the negativity surrounding you, how you can learn to speak authentically and learn how to trust yourself more.”

The lady you’re about to meet has a unique story. Not letting speech difficulties define her as a child, she overcame early setbacks to master her craft and become an incredible keynote speaker. I came across Annelise McCarthy when she was ‘schooling’ those on social media who had trolled her for the attire she had chosen to wear on stage. Not one to conform, Annelise eloquently put them in their place and I was intrigued to find out more about this fabulously articulate woman.

Annelise is a Women’s Speaking & Confidence Coach with over 15 years of public speaking training. She’s the owner and founder of ‘Her Speaking Coach’, where she makes speaking fun, empowering and sexy for women all over the globe. A world champion speaker, Annelise has performed on state, national and international stages and believes that speaking is a skill for life that all women can master. Let’s meet Annelise…

My guest today is unlike anyone I’ve ever had on the show before. When he was very young, he was a criminal hacker. Now he protects companies from people just like him.

Many years ago, in the NSW coastal town of Eden, Bastien Treptel was a curious kid and had a fascination for computers and technology. He would disassemble any technology he could get his hands on, including his father’s old telescope and his mother’s washing machine. After his grandfather gave him an old Pentium 486 computer when he was 14, Bastien began reading about famous hackers around the world and they became a source of inspiration for him.

By 16, he captured national attention and the Australian Federal Police were at his door. Bastien had hacked into a major Australian bank, accessing 40,000 credit card numbers and sensitive data. It was his love of pizza that led to the police tracking him down and ultimately reforming his ways.

Years later, Bastien put his skills to good use and founded CTRL Group with the aim of combating cybercrime, and in 2021, he sold the company for a serious sum that he now doesn’t need to work. Today, he uses his time to spread the word on how dangerous and creative cyber criminals are and how you can protect your business and personal life. Bastien is dedicated to inspiring everyone to appreciate security as it becomes an essential part of our lives as we move into a hyper-digitized world.

I saw Bastien speak at SXSW last year and have been following him on Insta ever since - finding his content so helpful and insightful, if not at times, quite terrifying at how exposed we are these days - I just had to get him on the show. Let's dive in to learn more about the fascinating and sometimes scary world of cybercrime…

“We need more conversation around understanding the feelings we seek through financial attainment. When we attach emotional goals to our financial pursuits, we're more likely to create lasting habits and feel confident in our monetary decisions. By fostering this dialogue, we can cultivate a healthier relationship with money, grounded in emotional fulfilment rather than purely materialistic goals.”

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“We need to take responsibility for our own health and this includes our mental health.”

    _______

Shane Kelton is a speaker and author who’s experienced mental health issues since the age of 12. His first memories are hiding under the bed with the thoughts of wanting to die, and it was the internalising of all the thoughts and feelings that nine years later led to a suicide attempt. A roller coaster ride of ups and downs was to follow, as he went about finding his way to get through the darkest of thoughts. Shane knew he didn’t want to die, but the internal dialogue and suffering all became too much. In this years that followed Shane got to work on himself, lived the ups and downs and decided after a friend died by suicide that enough was enough.

As a lived experience speaker he wanted to do more, so he wrote his book ‘I didn’t want to die, I just wanted the pain to end- finding a better way’ in an aim to help others who may be suffering or give a better understanding to those who just don’t get it. Shane’s passion is creating real conversations which don’t feel as challenging as they once were, allowing all humans to feel safer, build connections and find there own community to become healthier and happy versions of themselves.

”The power of small steps – how each, when collated, form the most spectacular masterpiece, however in isolation feel insignificant and uninspiring. In this fast-moving world, society so often celebrates life's bigger milestones and overnight success stories but fails to recognise the profound impact small steps make. Only when we look back with foresight are they detectable because we can see how each jigsaw piece came together.”

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“So much of parenting is based on outdated and inaccurate gender stereotypes.”

    ____________

At this later stage in life, I’m starting to break down many ‘societal norms’ I’ve carried with me for most of my life. This is interesting because I was brought up with quite progressive parents who didn’t conform to the typical ‘norms’ around gender bias that many of the parents of my mates did. It’s hard to change deep-seated views around masculinity and femininity that often are formed and passed through generations before us. So I was super keen to sit down with a wonderful couple who just by encouraging their son to fully express who he is and wants to be, they’ve created a movement of allowing others to be themselves too.

Scott Stuart is a best-selling children's author whose empowering messages have been seen almost 200 million times on social media, and Melina is a former professional dancer, turned branding and partnerships specialist. After their son fell in love with Elsa 6 years ago, and was subsequently told that "only girls can like Elsa", Scott & Mel have been committed to helping break down gender stereotypes for kids, to help everyone feel accepted for exactly who they are. But as you’re about to hear - they are impacting far more than just kids.

“It’s scary starting a business. I want to talk about how very isolating and personally confronting the experience of building your own business really is.”

Have you ever been unemployed and afraid? I know I have. Many of you may not know but despite having a stellar executive career, I’ve been sacked once and gone through two redundancies. They were challenging times, I can tell you. But even if you make the decision to leave your job to try something new - it’s often a scary time - especially if you have big bills to pay! “How to embrace ageing.”

    __________

Imagine going to the optometrist for a routine eye check and being told that you had a degenerative eye condition and you would soon be losing your sight. Completely.

Fast forward to a few months and numerous tests later, you find out the diagnosis was wrong. Aside from celebrating, what would you do, or change in your life. This was the experience of my guest today, Jane Tara and I was keen to hear more about her story.

Jane has published over a hundred children's books, several plays and five novels. Her latest book “Tilda is Visible” is a novel that is part memoir, part self-help and it’s a fascinating read.

Jane attributes a lot of her happiness in life to being a daily meditator, as well as being a sucker for a rescue mutt and, most of all, a front-row cheerleader for her two sons. Jane also spent thirteen years wandering the world and lived in five countries but is now the general manager at Australia's largest book review community, Better Reading. • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“If we were to return to the stone age, there would be three things we would need to survive - shelter, food and water. Agriculture provides those things for most of us and yet many of those that don’t live on the land understand the significance this industry has on their everyday lives.”

Angie Nisbet’s roots run deep in Australian agriculture, having been born and raised in North Western Queensland. Her upbringing on a cattle property instilled in her a profound love for the land, and her journey unfolded as she pursued a career in agriculture following her educational pursuits.

Angie's diverse professional journey has seen her don various roles, from jilleroo to beauty therapist, and even a truck driver for a livestock nutrition business during the harsh times of drought.. However, her most cherished titles are that of a rural mother of three and a devoted wife, residing on their station. Establishing a business in such a remote setting is no small feat, and Angie takes immense pride in the close-knit community she calls home and understands the unique setting in which she calls her home. Agriculture is a crucial sector that sustains us all, and Angie is determined to spark more conversations about its significance at the kitchen table

Driven by a desire to bridge her profound connection to the land with the inspirational women she has encountered in the agricultural sphere, Angie was inspired to create her own podcast, "Married to the Land." Here she delves into the intricate relationships between women living in rural, remote, and regional areas. Angie is a formidable advocate for rural women and I’m looking forward to our conversation today.

My guest today has over 30 years of experience in the Aviation industry, a former international airline pilot who flew the Airbus A330 and A340 worldwide. They are the author of The Complete Airline Pilot Interview Workbook and have experience as a Flight Instructor, Aviation lecturer, expert witness and mentor. They are also the founding partner of the Flightdeck Group, a group of aviation companies specialising in helping people achieve career success through career pathway awareness, interview preparation, career coaching and industry networking.

You’d be forgiven to think my guest is male - because that’s society’s expectations - still today. And it’s exactly why I’ve got my dear friend Sasha Robinson on the show today. She’s an aviation legend in an industry that still today has less than 5% of women at the top - something I was interested in diving deeper into with her. Sash is passionate about her industry and not only has a stellar career, but she is also the mother of five kids!

Raising five children, including three girls, Sasha has a passion for advancing careers of women in the field of Aviation. A recent career highlight was being involved in the Federal Government's Women in Aviation Initiative, creating an aviation awareness campaign for school and university-aged girls, highlighting incredible career opportunities in the Aviation and Aerospace industries. Sasha’s hard work was recognised at the Australian Aviation Awards recently as the winner of the 2023 Female Aviation Leader of the Year. Let’s meet the formidable, Sasha Robinson

  • Milestones are great markers. They are opportunities to take stock, to reflect, to see how far you’ve come. This is now the 160th episode of the Podcast & the final episode of Season 4.

For those that have been hanging out with me here for a while - you’ll know that I started this ‘project’ podcast in the height of lockdown as I wanted to continue the conversations I was having with people on ‘uncomfortable topics’. The conversations I’ve had this season have included topics like Normalising Anxiety, Radical Responsibility, Insecurity, Sexuality & Disability, Overcoming trauma, and a few different angles of a growing topic of discussion on mental health and the stigma of medication in regards to mental health.

Thank you to all the amazingly diverse and interesting people I’ve had the absolute privilege in sitting down with one to one this year - it’s been incredible. It’s these wide-ranging topics that help bridge gaps between people, they build understanding and empathy about the differences between us. I believe, the more understanding and tolerance we have for those that live & think very differently than us, the better lives we will all live. Have a wonderful holiday season & I look forward to connecting with you again early in the new year when Season Five returns!

Thank you for being here, Michelle x

  • If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?

“I want to talk about the purpose and value of higher education in this day and age;- how universities are redesigning their education, how I see the near and far future of higher ed and what AI can do for our education.”

Lilia Mantai is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Sydney Business School. She is an educationalist with experience in learning design and curriculum development. Her job is to make sure that Business programs deliver relevant skills and learning outcomes. Until recently her research concerned academic development and career progression, PhD training, and graduate skills.

Now, with the surge of AI and its proliferation in the higher education sector, particularly this year since chatGPT came into our lives, she is interested in what sort of AI skills we need to develop at university today to prepare our students for tomorrow. She thinks about how AI can help us do better education, how education needs to change, and what higher education might look like in the future.

Born in Kazakstan and raised in Russia and Germany, Lilia describes herself as ‘endlessly curious’. It was unsurprising then that we both met, by chance, in a queue at the SXSW conference in Sydney where we chatted about the future of education - I’ve been looking forward to diving deeper into that conversation topic so I hope you enjoy this episode with Lilia Mantai.

“How can we become more resilient?”

    _______

Today’s guest Craig Semple has had an unusual, yet fascinating career that has led him to where he is today. Craig was a career detective in the New South Wales Police Force for 25 years investigating homicides, outlaw motorcycle gangs and hundreds of other serious crimes. Medically retired from law enforcement in 2013 due to psychological injuries, Craig is now a sought-after keynote speaker and mental health advocate. From his `lived experience’ he has developed a rare personal insight into the causes, symptoms, treatment, recovery strategies and the impact of mental illness in the workplace.Craig is the founding director of Mentality Plus where he has developed and delivered mental health, wellbeing and resilience education to over twenty thousand people all over Australia. He is a master instructor of mental health first aid and an ambassador for the Black Dog Institute.

Craig's first book, The Cop Who Fell to Earth was published recently and is his story of transformation and profound personal growth through exposure to extreme life events. As compelling as a thriller, it is a story of how human endurance, tenacity, sacrifice and belief in something beyond ‘self’ can ultimately lead to the triumph of good over evil. Craig has a fascinating story, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed meeting Craig.
