As a companion piece to last episode, this episode we are headed to Disney California Adventure to ride The Little Mermaid - Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.  The guide map's lackluster description of this ride says, “Be part of Ariel’s world aboard this attraction!”  There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the Thrill Level describes the ride as bing a Loud, Dark Slow Ride. Before we set sail, here are five fast facts about The Little Mermaid - Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure. 1.  Located in the Paradise Pier (soon to be Paradise Park) section of Disney California Adventure, The Little Mermaid - Ariel’s Undersea Adventure officially opened on June 3, 2011.  It took over the spot in the park previously occupied by Golden Dreams, a film about the history of California narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. 2.  The statue of King Triton on the attraction’s exterior was related there from the, now defunct, Triton Gardens in Disneyland. 3.  The mural that can be seen in the ride’s load area where you board your clam-mobile is 86 feet long and was painted entirely by hand. 4.  The animatronic figure of Ursula in the attraction is the biggest on the ride measuring 7 1/2 feet tall and 12 feet wide.  5.  This attraction boasts a tribute to the movie The Incredible Mr. Limpet, a film where Don Knotts turns into a fish named Mr. Limpet.  In the Under the Sea sequence of the ride, Mr. Limpett can be spotted directly across from where Ariel is dancing. So now, let’s ride The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s’ Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure and see how it compares to Magic Kingdom’s Under The Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid.  Suzie is along for the ride today and after we ride we’ll discuss out thoughts on this attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we experience, The Little Mermaid - Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure.   FOLLOW US http://www.facebook.com/attractionchecklist  http://www.facebook.com/saturdaymorningmedia  http://www.twitter.com/SaturdayMMedia  https://plus.google.com/+Saturdaymorningmedia  https://www.linkedin.com/company/saturday-morning-media http://www.youtube.com/user/SaturdayMorningMedia?sub_confirmation=1 FOLLOW GRANT http://www.MrGrant.comhttp://www.twitter.com/toasterboy  https://instagram.com/throwingtoasters/ Sources: WIKIPEDIAhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Mermaid:_Ariel%27s_Undersea_Adventure DISNEYLAND WEBSITEhttps://disneyland.disney.go.com/attractions/disney-california-adventure/little-mermaid-ariels-undersea-adventure/ HIDDENMICKEYGUY.COMhttp://www.hiddenmickeyguy.com/news/little-mermaid-ariel’s-undersea-adventure-fun-facts   Show ©2017 Saturday Morning Media/Grant Baciocco

  • 7 Great Reasons & Excuses for a Motorcycle Adventure | All Roads Lead to Manchester with Pete Johnson

    · 00:52:50 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

Anyone who rides a motorcycle probably knows what it’s like to find any excuse or reason to ride. Some commute to work, some run all their errands using their bike… out of milk? No problem. Even though it’s easier to jump in your car, you’ll put on all your gear just to ride your bike around the corner. Whether it’s a day trip, a weekend jaunt, or perhaps an even longer adventure, it’s always in the back of a motorcyclists mind just what reason or excuse can they find to ride. Last week we talked about making a resolution to do an adventure this year, and this week we are giving you some good reasons and excuses to justify it. 1. Stuck, Bored & Sick of Work Lois Pryce: http://www.loisontheloose.com/ Tired of the cubicle job at BBC, in 2003 at 29 years old, Lois quit her job and set out on a solo adventure, riding from Alaska to Ushuaia. Adventure Rider Radio Episode: How I Found What I Wanted to Do in Life   2. Escape & Life Change Scotty Kerekes: Scooter Tramp Scotty Some go for a few months, some for a few years. Scotty Kerekes has been living on the road for twenty-one years. What started out as a soul searching experience turned in to a lifestyle for him. After being on the road for a year, Scotty realized that there was no turning back. He ended up selling everything he owned except for what fit on his bike, and hit the road… for good. Adventure Rider Radio Episode: Living on the Road - Tipping the Scale Between Freedom and Stuff   3. Setting a Record Carl Reese - www.carlreese.net Carl Reese set out to break the motorcycle record previously set by George Egloff in 1983, who completed the cross country run in 42 hours. Carl broke the record completing the run in 38 hours and 49 minutes. Adventure Rider Radio Episode: Endurance Rider Cannonball Run Record 4. Reunite & Reconnect with Friends  Steve Mason, Raymond Danton & Wilson Hutchison: www.thelongwayup.weebly.com The three were friends and biking buddies in Southwest Scotland in their teens. They eventually drifted apart to different lives, as many of us do, living in different countries. After over 30 years, a chance encounter brings these friends back together and they once again begin doing bike trips. Adventure Rider Radio Episode: Pan-American Highway, Motorbikes & Friends - Good Things Come in Threes 5. Moving Will Wilkins & Kate Macdonell: http://www.wollongongtowoolwich.co.uk/ After living in Australia for 12 years, Will & Kate were feeling homesick for the UK and decided it was time to go home. They could have just booked a flight and within the day been back home. But, instead they decided to turn a moving chore in to an opportunity to travel. Adventure Rider Radio Episode: Getting There is Half the Fun 6. Snow Doris Wiedemann: www.doriswiedemann.deMotorcycles are generally associated with good riding weather. And for most riders that probably means sunshine and warm days. But, there are some die-hards who actually really like cold weather and winter riding. Adventure Rider Radio Episode: It’s Snowing - Perfect Riding Weather?  7. Win a Contest Pete Johnson: All Roads Lead to Manchester In this episode, Jim talks to Pete about his theme trip that was realized when he won a ‘Biker Dream’ contest in 2011. Winning meant he had the excuse to do the motorcycle trip he had been planning since 2008, riding from Manchester in the UK to visit 33 towns called Manchester in the United States and Canada.  Pete is also the moderator of the Chunky Tread Motorcycle Adventure Club on Facebook and Twitter. • Motorcycle Riders from Diverse Cultures with Common Grounds - Madagascar Adventure with July Behl & Innovative Soft Luggage System with Adam Owens

    · 01:12:12 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

July Behl - Madagascar Adventure July Behl, was one of the six finalists for the United People of Adventure project organized by Touratech, with their initiative being to unite riders from different continents, cultures and speaking different languages, through their love of adventure motorcycling and travel.  July found riding in Madagascar incredibly exciting, experiencing "gnarly roads to deep sand, broken bridges to unforgiving ruts, extreme heat to torrential rain, mad foreigners to slightly confused locals". He connected with his fellow riders saying "the people, everyone and I mean everyone was just brilliant - helpful, kind, considerate and always there for each other". It's a trip he won't ever forget, and would do again in a heartbeat.  Facebook: July Behl https://www.facebook.com/rishi.rr.3 Herbert & Ramona Schwartz - United People of Adventure Herbert and Ramona Schwartz from Touratech brought these motorcyclists together for the experience of a lifetime in Madagascar. • Got it All Figured Out - Kinga Tanajewska & Brian Clarke

    · 01:23:58 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

We can find all kinds of reasons and excuses to keep putting off a short road trip, let alone a trip to other countries. As we all know, work can be the stopper in trip planning. We have to make money to support our riding addictions after all! And what if you’re just not comfortable enough to ride on your own, would a group tour be just the thing for you? Or if you know nothing about bike repairs?  Even the biggest of problems has a solution, sometimes you have to jump through some hoops, make mistakes or just figure it out. While some obstacles can be intimidating or difficult, once you overcome them you may be surprised what you discover. In this episode we talk with Kinga Tanajewska and Brian Clarke about their adventure motorcycle trips and what they had to do to get there. Kinga Tanajewska - Combining Work & Adventure in Australia Kinga Tanajewska knew an interest of motorcycles at a young age, and rode street bikes since her teens when her parents bought her a motorcycle for graduation. She moved from Poland to Australia, and there developed a passion for adventure motorcycling led by her desire to see as much of Australia’s outback as she could. She had a dream to ride around Australia, but wanted to keep her job. She also had no repair skills in case she had a flat or other break down. By splitting her trip in to two parts, and incorporating a couple of job transfers, she was able to mesh work and riding and ride solo around Australia. She experienced beautiful scenery, wildlife, and remote camping. For Kinga, changing a tire turned out not to be a concern after all, and now she is grabs any opportunity to ride. We call that rider mania! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onherbike Website: onherbike.com Youtube Channel: youtube.com/onherbike Brian Clarke - People & Places Make the Adventure Brian Clarke wasn’t happy being a mechanic, he’d had some failed relationships and was in desperate need for a change in his life. He’d always loved motorcycles but the expense kept him from riding, until he bought an old 600 Bandit and then he was hooked. Not knowing much about long distance adventure travel, he decided to book a Pan America motorcycle tour. Although his bike did break down just before the near three month trip was over, and the tour had proved challenging in more ways than one, Brian now realized that he was able to travel on his own. He didn’t need to rely on anyone else to guide him. He returned to the UK, leaving his motorcycle in Calgary, Canada. After a year, he flew back, got his bike and his two wheeled travel life began.  Brian eyes were opened to the beauty of the land and people in the places he visited. He met the love of his life, motorcyclist Michelle Lamphere, and instead of an undesirable job, he passionately pursues riding and submits articles to various moto publications. Life is good! • Self Confidence Goes a Long Way - Motorcycle Trip from Australia to Iran with Liz Keily

    · 01:01:46 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

In October 2014, Liz and her partner Con Feyen set out travel from Australia to London with a 12 month window planned for their trip. They had sold, stored or donated all their belongings, except for what they needed for the trip, and while it may seem scary to some people, they were excited about the freedom of being homeless and jobless and without “stuff”. Liz felt no trepidations about not being a very experienced motorcycle rider, and happily set out for London.   Well, after 16 months of riding, they arrived in Iran. Seems their schedule had gone on the wayside and London was not to be attained on this trip. And while at times the trip may have been harder than what Liz thought it would be, she feels she is better off for having done it. She says that “it is never too late to start something new, learn something new and to put yourself in vulnerable situations”. And even now, Liz and Con are planning their next adventure as she hones her skills back in Australia.   Blog: roostersoverland.com Facebook: roosters overland & Liz Keily   Brought to You By:   Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Ordering parts and accessories has never been easier. • Electric Motorcycles Neck Braces and ARR RAW Announcement

    · 00:55:48 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

Most people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. And we are quite used to our gas powered engine, with lots of torque, tanks that hold enough fuel to travel long distances and easy refuelling stations. Hey, it’s a tradition and who doesn’t love to hear the power in their engine? In the last few years though, motorcycle manufacturers have been introducing electric motorcycles. And while it is still a very new thing to us diehard bikers, electric motorcycles are starting to gain a toehold in this competitive industry. Till recently, it’s been the smaller manufacturers that have been leading this possible upcoming trend of quiet moto transport, but the major manufacturers are starting to come on board. When comparing performance of gas power to electric powered motorcycle, a few key points stand out. While traditional gas powered motorcycles are averaging 200 miles on a tank, electric powered motorcycles are only reaching just about half of that amount. But they require almost no maintenance and there are very few moving parts. You can refuel your gas powered motorcycle at almost every corner in any city and almost every town around the world, but it may be more difficult to find a place to recharge an electric bike. And when you do you may need to dedicate some time to this if using a regular 110 V outlet, as it may take up to 10 hours or more. But, dollar for dollar, with fuel costs being so high in some countries, the electric motorcycle could save you $100’s of dollars a year.Electric Motos - Neck Braces - ARR Show Announcement: ARR RAWElectric Moto - Victory Motorcycles - Josh KattMost people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. If you were able to reduce some of that risk by wearing a neck brace would you take advantage of that?My main question going into testing of the Leatt STX Road neck brace was: Is the added protection this offers worth the additional bulk and effort of having take it on and off every time I ride? The STX Road neck brace is Leatt’s “street” specific entry in their lineup. It shares the same technology and many of the same features as one of Leatt’s racetrack or off road specific braces but has a lower profile and some design differences that make it more adept for street/adventure riding.  These differences include a gap in the front of the brace for zipper access, rear scapula wings designed to fit around a back protector and most importantly it is optimized to fit over your riding gear. The general concept of the Leatt neck brace is to prevent extreme forward, backward or sideways extension of the neck in the event of an accident or impact.  It also helps prevent compression of the spine by transferring impact force from the helmet to the brace. According to Leatt the use of one of their neck braces reduces the force of hyper extension (over-bending of the head in rearward direction) by 46%, posterior hyper-translation (extreme movement of the head and helmet to the rear) by 17%, hyper- flexion (over bending of the head in forward direction) by 21%, lateral hyper-flexion (over-bending of the head to one side) by 20% and coupled axial loading (axial force on the spine) by 17%. Those are real numbers that make a very strong argument for wearing one of their braces. Additionally the STX is CE tested and certified as personal protective equipment. After using the brace for a short period of time it became easy to forget that I was even wearing it.  With it’s lightweight build and unobtrusive fit it seems to meld into your riding gear. Also after donning and doffing the STX multiple times with and without gloves in different circumstances it became second nature. The STX has a simple clamshell design that can hinge or be opened on either side with bright red clasps to help draw attention to emergency personnel in the event of an accident. Almost immediately after I started using the Leatt brace I new that the added “hassle” of this extra piece of equipment would be worth it, mostly because it wasn’t really a hassle at all. Honestly the most difficult aspect of getting used to wearing this brace was having the collar on my riding jacket fully fastened with the zipper all the way up. Head checks were another concern I had as far as the day-to-day use of this brace. I had heard from other riders that this was a real issue in older Leatt models, but I found that after a few rides it was just another thing about the STX that I didn’t notice much. My head checks have become much more pronounced because I cannot just glance down and back to either side over my shoulder like I used to but I think that is a good thing. Now when I go to do a head check I keep my chin up and look over my shoulder instinctively getting a good look at my blind spot. In my case it has helped me develop a positive habit. It also helps that the STX Road was designed for street and adventure use giving it a lower profile on the shoulder for this very reason. It may also be worth mentioning that I have a world-class short neck so if I can look over my shoulders to do head checks with this brace on then so can you!Quality and fit have a lot to do with how easily the STX became part of my riding routine. Strait out of the box I was impressed with the STX. Leatt ships every unit with detailed fitting instructions, different sizing pieces, a optional harness to keep the brace in position and all the tools necessary to make adjustments. In my case it took only a few minutes to swap out the medium spacers that come installed on the large size unit for the large spacers. After that one adjustment I haven’t looked back, the fit has been excellent. Leatt has very helpful sizing charts online to ensure you order the proper unit as well. The adjustments you make when you receive the brace are mostly just to dial in the fit for the particular gear you wear or unusual dimensions you might have. All and all I think that the Leatt STX Road neck brace is a fantastic product. The added level of protection is well worth the short adjustment period it takes to get used to wearing it. After several months of testing I feel almost naked riding without it, like I forgot my helmet or gloves. Leatt offers phenomenal quality and more experience in this field than any other manufacturer.  After all they invented this style of neck brace. I have made the STX Road a permanent part of my riding gear and I can’t recommend it enough.Pros: - Phenomenal quality- High level of protection- Vasty array of sizing optionsCons:- Expensive- Takes some getting used to- Can make contact with some Bluetooth communication units depending on the helmetMSRP: $399.00 UShttp://www.leatt.com First Ride Up the DivideSpencer Hill and two newbie riders plan a trip from Mexico to Canada, off road up the Continental Divide to showcase the accessibility of adventure rider. http://www.thegeardude.com/#!First-Ride-Up-The-Divide/c20ru/564107d60cf21009be7ef127ARR RAW is a spin-off show from Adventure Rider Radio that has a different format and audio style. • Lisa & Simon Thomas - Motorcycle Adventurers - Beyond the Point of No Return?

    · 01:50:05 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

This isn't a story about a long road trip, it's about living on the road. Lisa and Simon don't think about the end of the road, or plan for a flight home, because the road is their home. They usually sleep in a tent, they cook outside, and they wouldn't have it any other way. And after 13 years of living off their bikes, with nature as their kitchen and bedroom back drop, there are no plans to settle down, at least not yet and who knows if ever? Lisa and Simon are seasoned travellers, they are truly pioneers of the adventure motorcycling industry. When they started riding, social media was non existent, there was no twitter, youtube or facebook. If people were riding around the world, they were doing it at a time when you probably had to learn from books, or by talking to other riders or travellers. Information on motorcycle adventure travel wasn't as prevalent on the internet in 2003 as it is now. The Thomas' have paved the way for many motorcyclists looking for inspiration or role models. Their knowledge and experience speaks volumes, whether its about connecting with people, fitting in with different cultures, making a living on the road, or cooking a great meal, and they have some great tips and advice for anyone planning or already on their trip, be it solo or as a couple.  Watch for the book Dirty Dining, An Adventurers Cookbook by Lisa Thomas - coming soon! • A Very Extended Motorcycle Trip with Petra and Anders Stridfeldt & Rider Skills - How to Handle Your Bike When Not Moving with Bret Tkacs

When One Year Turns in to Three - Petra and Anders Stridfeldt With their three sons grown and moved out, Petra and Anders felt what they called boredom, that loss we all feel when we’ve worked and lived to raise our families, and then being needed comes to an end. So they came up with a plan to ride their motorcycles around the world. They quit their jobs, sold their house, car and most of their belongings and in 5 months were on the road. They only planned to be gone a year, maybe a year and a half, but three years later they are still riding, having explored 40 countries and ridden about 108,000 km. And it doesn’t look like there’s an end in sight for Petra and Anders motorcycle adventure. Jim caught up with them in Sao Paulo before they leave for Europe and Africa. • Jeffrey Polnaja - The Impossible Journey; Motorcycle Shipping by Land or Sea

    · 01:22:21 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

Jeffrey Polnaja - First Indonesian Motorcyclist to Ride the WorldBefore Jeffrey started his around the world trip back in 2006, he heard the word “impossible” over and over again. Jeffrey comes from a country where solo world travel isn’t readily embraced by their culture, and travel is more often done in groups. The Indonesian Rupiah currency is very low in value compared to the US dollar. And people told him with the time needed, the distance he would cover, cultural differences and the natural challenges, that it was a far fetched idea and that it was an unattainable dream. A solo motorcycle trip around the world seemed absurd to many people in Indonesia, but Jeffrey had other plans. And the more people told him it was futile, the more determined he became. He slowly gained support through some friends and was sponsored by an adventure gear company for some camping and riding gear. But, after five years of planning and trying to get the financial support he needed to make his journey, he made the decision to sell his company. Then in 2006, with just a basic knowledge of English, and limited funds, he set off on his “Ride For Peace” journey on his GS Adventure.Jeffrey’s trip was inspired by his son enquiring about why there was so much unjust conflict in the world after 9/11. He wanted to experience the world and different cultures, and to discover for himself the good and the desire for peace that most people have. He found that you don’t need to have any special skills to take on such an adventure, that any ordinary person can do it. You just need an open mind. After 7 years of riding, Jeffrey is back in Indonesia to enlighten people as to what he has found on the road, but he isn’t finished his ride yet, and plans to head out again soon.** Jeffrey Polnaja is a Jupiter’s Traveller. • Darien Gap - No Through Road | Dylan Wickrama BMW Moto Raft

    · 01:13:05 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

Dylan Wickrama Between 2010 and 2013, Dylan Wickrama was on a world trip on his motorcycle. He left with no plans and he had a tight budget. On his trip he covered 210,000 km and road through 80 countries, starting in Switzerland and ending in Argentina. His RTW trip wasn’t about speed, distance or setting records, but it was about exploring the world, meeting people and discovering places. After 3 years on the road, he reached the Darien Gap in Panama. Considering his options, Dylan came up with a plan to get around the Darien Gap to continue his trip. And that plan involved water, his motorcycle, some oil drums and bamboo poles. Dylan wrote a book about his adventure called When the Road Ends. It’s available on his website and on Amazon. Website: http://www.ride2xplore.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ride2xplore/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/samarawickrama05 Darien Gap - Jungles, Snakes & Geurillas Where is the DARIEN GAP? The Darien Gap is also know as the DARIEN ISTHMUS, an isthmus being a narrow strip of land connecting two larger areas with water on either side. You will find the Darien Gap on the Pan American Highway, nown as the “longest motorable road in the world” in the Guiness Book of Records, a popular route for many motorcyclists. The Pan American Highway can be as long as 48,000 km depending what route you choose to take through Canada and the US, with the most popular routes averaging about 30,000 km. Adventurers often start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and end in Ushuaia, Argentina, or the reverse. There is no official route in Canada or the United States, but all Interstate Highways in the US have been declared as part of the Pan American Highway. The official Pan American Highway spans from Laredo, Mexico to Buenos Aires in Argentina. Between Panama and Colombia, on the border of Central and South America, you come to the Darien Gap,  just over 160 km (99 miles) long and about 50 km (31 miles) wide of jungle, mountains, swamps and rivers. The only sensible options are to go over it by plane or around it by ship A Few Basic Facts About Darien Gap: There are no roads, only foot paths or trails, no street signs. Exotic wildlife abounds, the likes of which most of have never known, such as jaguars, wild boars and venomous snakes. It's hot, muggy, the forest is thick and the mosquitos atrocious. Dangers are everywhere, there are risks of encountering drug smugglers, poachers, guerrillas and paramilitaries in the Darien Gap, which is also a refuge for murderous outlaws. The Darien Gap is home to indigenous peoples known as the Embera-Wounaan and the Kuna. Why Not Build a Road? In 1971 and 1992 efforts were made to allow a road to be put through the Darien Gap, but both were stopped due to environmental concerns, of which there are many. There is evidence that the Gap has prevented diseased cattle, which cause foot and mouth disease, from spreading in to Central and North America. The indigenous people are concerned that a road may destroy their cultures.  There is the threat of making the Darien Gap more accessible for drug trafficking and the resulting violence. And there is also the need to protect the rainforest. The Darien Gap has been said to be a natural barrier which protects North America.  Crossing the Gap For centuries, the Darien Gap has been a destination and challenge for many explorers and adventurers, and the exploration of it has usually been met with disaster. However, there have been many successful attempts at crossing through the Darien Gap, by two wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles, rocons, motorcycles, bicycles and by foot. There have been several notable “first of it’s kind” crossings. The first successful crossing in a vehicle was in 1960 in a Land Rover and Jeep. An arduous journey moving an average of only 200 metres or about 650 feet in an hour. It took them nearly 5 months to cross the Gap, as they made their way through the jungle clearing the bush by hand, crossing streams and rivers, making bridges as they went.  The first crossing in a two wheel drive vehicle was in 1961, by a team using three Chevrolet Corvairs, which took 109 days. They completed the expedition having abandoned one of the cars. Between 1971 and 1973, the first fully overland crossing was by Ian Hibell by bicycle. In 1975, Robert L. Webb made the first motorcycle crossing. Between 1985 and 1987, the first vehicle crossing by land only was made in a Jeep by Loren Upton and Patty Mercier in 741 days, they would return in 1995 to cross the Darien Gap again, this time on Rocons. Since then there have been more notable crossings made by motorcycle, on foot or by river boats. To this day, any inland routes remain extremely dangerous. For example, National Geographic Adventure contributing editor Robert Young Pelton and two American backpackers were kidnapped there in 2003 and held for 10 days. In an National Geographic Adventure interview by Nicole Davis, Robert Young Pelton had this to say: "The Darien Gap is one of the last—not only unexplored—but one of the last places people really hesitate to venture to... It's also one of the most rugged places.” and “It's an absolute pristine jungle but it's got some nasty sections with thorns, wasps, snakes, thieves, criminals, you name it. Everything that's bad for you is in there." A Couple of Options for Crossing the Darien Gap by Motorcycle FLYING PANAMA TO COLUMBIA - cargo shipping is available with Air Cargo Pack (www.aircargopack.com) - there are details on their website about shipping the motorcycle and what the required paperwork is - cargo shipping is also available with Servicarga (www.servicarga.com.pa) - you will have to arrange a flight for yourself from Panama to Bogota with Avianca (www.avianca.com), Copa Airlines (www.copaair.com) or Viva Colombia (www.vivacolombia.co) - return ticket required - Colombian law STAHLRATTE (www.stahlratte.org) - often talked about in motorcycling circles - built in 1903 in Holland, the SV STahlratte, a sailing ship, is not a commercial vessel, it is owned by a foundation which was set up in 1984 as a commune - the purpose of the Stahlratte is as a “traveling platform for group life/experience" - it is a non profit venture supported by volunteers - it's a 4 day trip around the Darien Gap, bikes are dropped off the night before the voyage and bike are retrieved the day after arrival - includes food and beverages, one night hotel before the journey and a bed on board - more information at www.stahlratte.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/prices-discription-pana-carta-biker.pdf Horizons Unlimited - www.horizonsunlimited.com Horizons Unlimited’s forums have good information where some adventurers have taken cheaper routes, shipping the bikes in containers and then meeting up with the bikes through a kaleidoscope of boats and buses. Although cheaper to go this route, it also takes longer and requires some good bit of organization. You need to check your sources out carefully though, as there are some stories of robbery, problems with customs when using smaller boats, etc. Music: www.audionautix.com ARR is Brought to You By: Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Ordering parts and accessories has never been easier. • An African Motorcycle Adventure About... Fruit? | When Chance Decides Your Travel Route

    · 01:17:32 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

Every now and again, we hear about motorcycle adventure stories, that have, well let's say a twist to them. So, how exactly do you tie in fruit or dice on a motorbike trip? This week Max MacGillivray and Isaac Simonelli share their unusual stories with us, and maybe you'll get some great ideas of how you can make your adventure a little different from the norm. Max MacGillivray: The Great Fruit Adventure Max MacGillivray has a strong background in the farming and fresh produce industry, and a passion for healthy foods. He's also a motorcyclist. And three years ago, he made a plan to ride from London to Cape Town in Africa, to promote the benefits of fruits and vegetables to parents and their children. He and dairy specialist, Gareth Jones set out to create awareness, visiting food producers and schools along the way. And after a three month trip, they plan to carry on their mission in the UK, inspiring and educating children on healthy eating. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegreatfruitadventure Website: www.thegreatfruitadventure.com Isaac Simonelli - A Roll of the Dice, Which Road to Take? What happens when you let the roll of the dice determine your next move on a motorcycle trip around the world? Isaac Simonelli left his job at a newspaper in Thailand for a year long adventure, and so far he's been through Southeast Asia and in to Africa. He lets the roll of the dice determine what he eats, where he sleeps and where he rides to next. Jim talked to him when he was in Kenya, will he still be there when this show airs or have the dice allowed him to move on and to where? • The Adventure Trio Returns - Terry, Sandy & Jack Borden

    · 01:27:49 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

There's a saying that it isn't what you do in life that you will regret, it's what you don't do.  With that thought in mind, the Borden family made a decision to go on a motorcycle adventure as a family. And once they made the decision, they knew there was no turning back. A trip with the scope of the one they chose to do can be a scary thing, what with having to leave your home, friends, extended family, jobs and everything you know that has become the norm. And then there are the fear mongers, instilling in us all the bad and negative things that 'could' happen to us while we explore new territories. And the people who care for us that will worry while we're gone. And on the other end of the scale are those who encourage us, tell us it's the best thing we will ever do, that there is so much to do and experience in the world, and that it will change our lives forever. In 2014, the Bordens left on their adventure, and they spent 15 months travelling through Mexico, Central and South America. Terry, Sandy and Jack share their experiences and stories which inspire and reassure us that this kind of trip will influence you incredibly, change your life and the way you think, for the better. • Brokentooth - Adventures Not of the Ordinary Kind & Rider Skills - How to Turn Your Bike in Tight Spots & Sam Manicom Tours USA

    · 01:30:03 · Adventure Rider Radio Motorcycle Podcast. Travel Adventures, Bike Tech Tips

This week we talk to Oliver Solaro aka Brokentooth, who is always up for a challenge, especially when it comes to his KLR 650 and ice or water. Bret Tkacs, motorcycle riding instructor from PSSOR gives some great tips on how to turn your bike in tight situations. And Sam Manicom gives us a ride report on his motorcycle tour in the United States. Oliver Solaro - BrokenTooth - A KLR 650 & a Pontoon Boat? Oliver Solaro doesn't let much stop him from enjoying life, and from doing what he wants to do. For Oliver, it's all about having fun and doing things most people wouldn't even dream about doing. He's been on several different winter trips on his motorcycle, and now he's modified a pontoon boat to carry his KLR 650 on his latest adventure. He casts an unusual appearance as he wears a cavalier hat with a feather, as he travels the waters in Ontario on the boat. Oliver plans to trace some of the route that the explorer, Samuel de Champlaine, the founder of Quebec City and an important historic figure in Canada, travelled when he founded New France. We know what you're asking... what exactly is Oliver doing? And how does a motorcycle and a boat go together?       Adventure travel is only one possible facet of travel, but it is also one of the most exciting. The challenge of adventure traveling - of climbing mountains, of whitewater rafting, of staying alone in the desert - is enough to get any traveler to try it. Evan Hanson, however, is not just any traveler. Evan Hanson may be sixty-four years old, but he has lived the lives of at least seven men. He has traveled for many, many years, he considers himself a consummate explorer, and he has come to visit Hayden and bring wisdom to share with the world. Evan shares his definition of adventure, as well as what got him into adventuring and advice on how to start adventuring. Evan’s story, “Two Summits in Seven Days,” details Evan’s journey as he and his friends decided to hike both the Matterhorn and Kilimanjaro. It was expensive, difficult, took place in two different hemispheres, and they hit a great deal of roadblocks along the way. Despite the odds, though, he succeeded, and counts it among his greatest achievements. “Be ambitious when you’re planning, but plan well,” Evan says. “Don’t let obstacles deter you from reaching your goals, and you will be successful.” Evan shares the two biggest obstacles of adventure, as well as the two main elements to making travel work. Hayden and Evan discuss overcoming roadblocks and the importance of a sense of challenge. Incorporating your passion into your adventure travel is not an easy task, but it does build character, which is vital to adventure traveling.   0:41 - Hayden begins discussing adventure travel and why people adventure travel. 2:42 - Hayden brings on Evan Hanson, who Evan has been traveling since his 20s; Hayden asks what makes him still do these things. Evan talks about his definition of adventure, which he sums up as “certain uncertainty,” as well as what got him into adventuring. 10:26 - Evan gives advice on how to start adventuring. He says the two main elements are balance and prudence. If you keep pushing the envelope, the envelope eats you. 15:52 - Hayden and Evan discuss the history of the location that you’re in and how you can stand in the same spot something incredible happened and feel what happened in that spot. 17:26 - Evan starts telling his adventure story of climbing two different mountains in two different hemispheres, titled “Two Summits in Seven Days.” Evan was a desert survival instructor in Saudi Arabia, and he and his fellow instructors decided to climb both the Matterhorn in Switzerland and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It was going to be expensive, and difficult, but they were determined. When they went up in the mountain to get acclimated to the elevation, it snowed, in July. When they were finally ready to climb the Matterhorn, it took them six hours, but it was worth every moment. They had to immediately head out to Tanzania after their descent and a night of sleep, and when they arrived, they had lost their food bag, so they decided they had to climb even more quickly than the normal expedition. They ascended quickly, and Evan got acute mountain sickness, but he was determined to make it to the summit. And make it he did, but he was so sick he had to descend rapidly after that. They climbed the mountain in only three-and-a-half days, despite the odds. “Be ambitious when you’re planning, but plan well. Don’t let obstacles deter you from reaching your goals, and you will be successful.” 34:06 - Hayden and Evan break down Evan’s story, discussing the two biggest obstacles of adventure and how Evan overcame those roadblocks in order to achieve one of his biggest adventures. They also talk about the importance of having a sense of challenge when you journey. 37:18 - Evan talks about how he incorporates his life and his passions into his travels and adventures. He thinks it is important to do things that will build character, like suffering, perseverance, fear, and many other experiences. Hayden agrees that it is important to put everything out there and learn to go over roadblocks. 40:00 - Hayden shares his story of fear from nighttime in Brazil, of fearing nighttime in Rio and what could happen while you travel. He and Evan discuss how important planning is to travel.   Check out our website at: Travel Stories Podcast Online Email Hayden (he’ll answer everything) at: hayden@travelstoriespodcast.com Follow Hayden on Twitter and send him a Tweet (he’ll really answer everything) at: @travelstoriesuk on Twitter All musical composition and arrangement for story scores by Cody Crabb, who can be found at his website: CodyCrabb.com All show notes and writing for episodes by Nicole Mello, who can be found at her website: Works By N.L.
