  • Here we go

Like all great things, we have a sequel! Part 2 of the 3 Is The Magic Number cultural review of 2023 is here for you to enjoy. Bathe in its chat and swim in its natter.

In this 2nd part, Matt and Remfry talk about their final 5 ‘things’ which complete their Top 10’s of 2023. These wonderful bits and pieces vary from the most talked about TV show of the year to an incredible political podcast, from an album released in 2022 (naughty Matt) to a gig performed in a church. Magical stuff.

If you haven’t already listened to Part 1, what on earth are you doing? Immediately stop reading this and go click below on that and THEN come back here, pick up from where you left off and get stuck into Part 2.

As ever, if you agree, disagree, have opinions you need aired or just want to complain or praise, get in touch @3magicnumberpod. We shall see you all in early 2024 when Season 3 launches with a whole new set of guests. Watch this space, stay subscribed and see you on the other side. (Oh and Happy Jesus Birthday to all who celebrate)

  • Greetings, hello and welcome to of The Annual 3 Is The Magic Number end of season cultural review (Part 1).

Matt and Remfry witter on about so many wonderful ‘things’ and delightful ‘stuff’, that we’ve had to split this up into two parts. Despite the name of the podcast, we gave ourselves to 10 (not 3) ‘things’ each (as well as a host of bubbling unders) which took in our hosts favourite films, TV shows, books, podcasts, albums, live shows etc etc of the year.

What will be Remfry’s favourite ‘thing’? What ‘stuff’ will Matt harp on about? Can you tell we didn’t quite get to grips with the descriptive language for this one…? The pair wang on about indie dream pop hardcore, the biggest and pinkest film of the year, things to distract you from flying and why videos games usually make terrible movies.

As ever, if you agree, disagree, have opinions you need aired or just want to complain or praise, get in touch @3magicnumberpod. We shall see you again next Monday (18th December) for part 2!

  • And now, the end is near, and so we have, the final podcast (of this Season). Today's podcast, the finale to Season 2, is the Matt vs Remfry show and their Top 3 Movie Sequels. A lovely long and ramble-y chat filled with movie spoilers and sequel apologies chatter. Lovely.

As this is the final podcast, there is no recommendation corner or Tuesday Top 3, just all out chat action. Magic.

The pair head off into the sunset this summer to work on Season 3 (launching Autumn 2023), and appear at both 2000trees and Arctangent festivals as a live podcast. Please do come along if you are at either event.

Until next season, a huge thanks to all who listen to this podcast, anyone that has shared it, rated it, left us a comment, streamed, downloaded, thank you to all who care. It means a lot.

See you guys on the flip side.

  • We may be close to the end of Season 2, but we are finishing in style. This penultimate podcast, the last of Season 2 with a guest, features a chat between Matt, Remfry and the brilliant Madison (Madi) Watkins, vocalist from Delaware hardcore bruisers Year Of The Knife. Madi brings to the table her Top 3 Studio Ghibli Movies, a topic so wonderful, the chat could realistically have gone on for weeks and weeks.

With both hosts being fans of these insanely incredible films, this episode is essentially a big old love in all about the studio; the films, their style, the music, the stories, the characters …. not ONE negative comment was shared in the whole exchange (and how rare is that!?) This chat does contain spoilers for all of these films, but to be honest if you haven’t seen some of these stone cold classic yet, this is more on you than it is us.

In recommendation corner we have 3 films (including a bonus recommendation courtesy of Matt's kids), a comic book aaaaaaaand a very cool theme park that both hosts are very jealous about.

We end the podcast with some chatter about more announced 3ITMN live shows, a cracking Tuesday Top 3 and a bit of nattering about Season 3 and next weeks special end of season finale episode. Lovely lovely lovely.

  • This week's podcast we venture off to a galaxy far far away, both in topic and guest location! How magical. This week's guest is the insanely talented and all round wonderful human, Anaiah Lei from the band Zulu and the state of California. He brings with him the chat and the force, with his Top 3 Star Wars Characters.

Now, both hosts consider themselves fans of the SW universe, but frankly, after this chat, both need to go back to school. The picks Anaiah brings to the podcast really do show a man in deep love with all things Star Wars shaped, no normy normy the norm norm picks here ladies and gents! It’s a cracking, spoiler-filled, deep geeky chin-wag covering films, TV shows, prequels, sequels, comic books and more.

We end the chat with our weekly trip over to recommendation corner where the trio talk up a wonderful new TV show, a new heavy heavy album from a very exciting band, and a film some are already calling one of the years very best.

Our final podcast act includes some chat about another (ANOTHER!) 3ITMN live show, a Tuesday Top 3, and next weeks guest reveal. May the force be with you all!

  • For todays podcast, we are changing course ever so slightly and rather than a normal guest plus Matt and Remfry chat, we have something a little different.

So…..Welcome to the Super Special Bonus Pod: Quick Fire Top 3s episode with Matt and Remfry! Catchy title eh?

Ok ok ok….due to some scheduling issues, the regular podcast for this week has been held up ever so slightly, sooooooo in it’s place, we have this rather fun, very compact episode of 3ITMN. Matt and Remfry take to their socials and ask fans of the podcast for their various Top 3 suggestions, they then pull a variety of them out of a virtual hat (Matt’s phone) and do their best to answer as ‘off the cuff’ as possible.

So yes, no recommendation corner, no free indie label advert and no Tuesday Top 3 this week, but it’s still a very fun romp through the silly minds of both hosts. Top 3 Tom Hanks movies? Top 3 emotions? Top 3 Top 3’s? Dive in to find out all.

  • With only a few podcasts left of Season 2 (BOO!) we welcome this week the wonderful, brilliant, all-round super human being Goc O’Callaghan. Goc is part of the magnificent ArcTanGent Festival team which is the U.K. premier musical event for all that is interesting, heavy and out there. Her Top 3 topic is a great one; less well-travelled destinations. Cracking!

For this podcast chat we journey far and wide, taking in travel and holiday destinations from the most interesting but also more secret and hidden places around the globe. Make sure you grab a note pad for all those super insightful tips and stuff. This is a really ace chat, with travel and culture being such an integral part of Goc's life and she even gets those two chatty men Matt and Remfry nattering about some of their own destinations of choice.

The three pals head on over to Recommendation Corner and get down with some choice picks and big ups including two huge albums and one extremely interesting book. Awesome.

The podcast finishes up with a great Tuesday Top 3, some shout out, next weeks podcast guest reveal (which is ... not really a reveal) and this week's free indie advert comes from MNRK Records. Tuck in!

  • All we hear is radio ga ga this week, as we return from a few weeks of new season regulars back to the straight and narrow of Matt + Remfry + Guest = Episode. On today's podcast we welcome BBC Radio 1 DJ and Future Alternative show host Nels Hylton to discuss and dissect his Top 3, which given the guest, is very very on brand. Hoorah!

Nels talks about his Top 3 Favourite Albums Of The 00’s a topic with an almost infinite number of choices. Amongst some classic picks he also talks at length about one album and band very close to his heart, a dear to him, almost unearthed gem. I would give anyone a very large pile of gold if they guessed it ahead of listening to the pod chat. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

The chat over in that wonderful corner of recommendations this week sees the gang talk about a wonderful album and band, a new band and their EP and a world famous graphic novel series. Tasty!

We end the podcast with an incredibly strong Tuesday Top 3, a few shout outs, the reveal for next weeks guest and this weeks free indie label advert comes from the truly awesome Alcopop. Enjoy!

  • Love is in the air this week as we unleash our 2nd brand new season regular episode idea...the couples episode! In what we here at 3ITMN hope will be something we can actually keep going season on season, our guests in this week's pod are quite frankly one of the greatest couples in the metal universe right now, Sammy and Justine from Employed To Serve and Church Road Records (as well as so many other brilliant musical, business and life endeavours).

Sammy and Justine chose their Top 3 Comfort Films, with a slight extension/explanation added about the films being ones watched post tour, when all the hard work from playing shows and gigs has ended and the pair finally have a moment to themselves. The picks cover all bases, the classic, the guilty pleasure and the…erm…the really out there, leftfield choice.

All four take some time off their comfort film chatter and head to recommendation corner, where this week there is big chat about a classic album, a new album, a TV show that could be seen as a guilty pleasure, and a pair of TV shows some consider to be the very best. Crikey.

We end on a Tuesday Top 3 that sparks some healthy debate and chatter with M and R, a few shout outs, the next week guest reveal and this week's free indie label advert from Flatspot Records.

  • This week we reach the halfway(ish) point in Season 2, and have a brand new season regular to audioily (is that a word) unveil. Each season we here at 3ITMN are going to put out a podcast versus episode, where we chat with a fellow podcaster, fuse our podcast formats together and have a blooming lovely old time.

This week it is the turn of journalist Giles Bidder from the brilliant 101 Part Time Jobs podcast, a pod everyone should go check out immediately (after listening to this one first, of course!).

Giles chose his Top 3 Smells, a quite frankly outstanding topic choice that on the surface seems incredibly simple, but this chat is anything but. Diving into chat about family, love, work, life the universe and everything! Matt and Remfry also had a chance to spill some beans regarding their own life in work and jobs leading up to the present. Did Matt really work in the adult entertainment industry? Did Remfry really go to school with a load of incredibly famous actors? All will be revealed.

As with each and every episode, the threesome head over to recommendation corner and give big loud shouts out to a book, a game, a photographer and an extra bonus with a record shop (of sorts).

The podcast ends on a Tuesday Top 3, a few shout outs, the next week guest reveal aaaaaaand this weeks free indie label advert comes from Hassle Records. Magic.

  • On the 4th day of Christmas you may have got calling birds, but with us you’re getting something way betterer. Episode 4 of this new season has Matt and Remfry have a good old face to face natter with Mr metal himself Brady Deeprose from the genuinely world class Conjurer, a band on the forefront of all good things heavy (and indeed metal) in the U.K.

This episode was one that lived long in the memory and also the guts, as it was Brady’s Top 3 Diet Fizzy Drinks. The trio chatted on for a wholesome age about drinking and even used this as an opportunity to properly do a taste test...of many, many diet fizzy drinks…for the whole episode…so many drinks…too many to be honest. By the end of the chat, I’m pretty sure Brady had regretted his topic choice…even though he was literally wearing fizzy drink branded shoes (pictorial evidence will be posted on socials). LET’S GET FIZZICAL!

The trip to recommendation corner saw the guys bring up and big up a popular TV show, an album of the rock variety, and a brilliant, brilliant movie.

Ending this podcast with something a bit different, rather than a Tuesday Top 3 natter the pair head into battle with a mini quick fire Matt vs Remfry. This weeks free indie label advert comes from the sensational Venn Records. Enjoy!

  • As with the title of this podcast, 3 is certainly the magic number as today, episode 3 of season 2, we totally keep our cool and totally keep our calm whilst talking to Jane's Addiction / Porno For Pyros drummer and all round legend Mr Stephen Perkins. MR STEPHEN PERKINS!

Now, this week's podcast might not follow to well worn and rigid 3ITMN podcast structure, but fear not as Stephen’s topic of Top 3 Influences On His Rhythm is one of the most engaging, fascinating and generally awesome conversations Matt and Remfry have ever had. A fantastic subject, a stupendous Top 3 and a properly incredible natter was had by all.

The journey over to recommendation corner was one to check out a couple of films, an album and also some general words of wisdom.

The chaps finish up the podcast with some Top 3 Tuesday chat, and this weeks indie label advert comes from the legends over at Church Road Records.

  • Episode 2 time all! Welcome to the second of this season's pods, this week those lovable chatty rogues Matt and Remfry, are grilling the fabulous Ithaca vocalist Djamilla Boden Azzouz on her Top 3 Pokémon.

Now being totally upfront, this is a subject our hosts know almost nothing about, so this whole podcast was a steep learning curved lesson for them both. The aged pair learn all about types of Pokémon, the different games, it’s origins and history, the mega success and even about how mistakes have even been turned into good for the Nintendo company.

Following this brilliant and in depth lesson, the 3 also head over to recommendation corner to biggedy big up a YouTube channel a videogame and a TV show.

Now hitting their stride on the 2nd pod, the pair also have a Tuesday Top 3 to discuss, the first of their free independent label adverts (A Cheery Wave), and some other general guffaw enduring natter. Hoorah!

  • Merry first podcast proper of Season 2 to one and all! Our season opener has Matt and Remfry poised for a lovely face-to-face chin wag with music journalist, author and man of Barnsley, Ian Winwood. Ian and his exceptional book 'Bodies: Life and Death in Music' made both of our hosts cry tears of real teary water and then demand some answers!

Ian picked his Top 3 Places in Camden, the mighty borough, in the north of the mighty London Town where many a rock gig is set to occur each and every evening. This was a genuinely inspiring chat which included all manner of subjects including when is a home a home, how do you answer difficult questions about yourself and who could Ian never interview?

As per every podcast, our 3 amigos also head over to recommendation corner to give praise to a(nother) book, an EP from a new heavy band and a shop that sells books…a book shop if you will.

We also come armed with some nervous energy chatter and nonsense, a Tuesday Top 3 to discuss with some badly pronounced shout outs and we reveal next weeks guest as well. Get stuck in yo!

  • Welcome back one and all to the first episode of 3 is the Magic Number Season 2, the podcast that asks its guests for their Top 3 favourite things in any subject of their choosing.

We (as in your hosts, Remfry Dedman and Matt Hughes) just wanted to take a moment, and this short, sharp and snappy podcast, to say hello again, catch everyone up on things that have been going on in 3ITMN world, as well as give you some insight into exactly what to expect from Season 2.

We announce and chat about some of the amazing guests coming up, as well as introduce a few new season regulars that will be starting from this season onwards. We also talk about our new indie label advert scheme, tease some live shows, remind everyone about our monthly music playlists and give ourselves a probably just about deserved pat on the podcast back.

  • Welcome one and welcome all to this special end of year 3 Is The Magic Number podcast, 2022 A Year In Review. It’s a Christmas cracker!

Breaking from the usual format of the magic 3, Matt and Remfry chat a chatty chat about their individual Top 10 things they have loved about 2022. The picks included albums, computer games, TV shows, live performances, festivals, comic books and more. Oh holy night!

As this podcast chat was so ramble-y, there was no time for recommendation corner, but we do discuss our monthly Spotify playlists, free advertising we're offering to independent music labels and more tantalising titbits emerging over Season 2 in the new year. Jingle bells!

3 Is The Magic Number will return in early 2023, please do like, subscribe, comment and rate! Deck those halls!

  • We are back and really getting into full swing! On this weeks podcast we welcome Andrew Groves, the songwriter, producer, resident of Iceland and former vocalist and guitarist from the much loved and much missed Arcane Roots.

Andrew goes deep down into his love of all things Anime with his Top 3 Anime shows, picking some incredible sounding programmes from this wonderful world of animation. This is a great chat for anyone with even a passing interest in this incredible Japanese cultural phenomenon. Newcomers and long standing fans (with Matt and Remfry somewhere between the two) will no doubt get a kick from the huge amount of detail Andrew goes into on this pod, so roll up those sleeves and get stuck in y’all!

Over in that good old corner of recommendation, the chaps spout the good spout about another anime series (if you couldn’t get about from the main pod chat), a superb debut album and an incredibly powerful and important piece of (2021) cinema. Crikey.

The gang also have a load of shout outs, a Tuesday Top 3 and that pretty much sees us though for this episode. Enjoy!

  • A very short and sweet ‘welcome back’ 3 is the Magic Number podcast with Matt and Remfry.

Following an enforced mid season hiatus, the guys (host with the most Remfry Dedman and podcast side-kick par excellence Matt Hughes), explain their absence, talk about what is still to come from Season 1 and even find time to have a special mini Top 3 ‘face off’ - a sort of precursor to the full event that will be the final episode of season 1, Remfry vs Matt, fully loaded.

The climax to season 1 picks up again properly next Monday, enjoy this amuse-bouche for now though!

  • We are back! After a short week off, Season 1 continues a pace with a wonderful guest in the shape of broadcaster, journalist, presenter, podcaster and all round super human, Sophie K. Sophie somehow manages to fit in DJ’ing for Kerrang! Radio, Absolute Radio, Radio 1, writing regularly for Kerrang! magazine, hosting with Amazon Music anddddddd being one of the 3 podcast hosts for On Wednesdays We Wear Black. Surely there aren’t that many hours in the day?

This Monday's podcast has Matt and Remfry chat to Sophie about her Top 3 Cult TV Shows, as well as veering into just a brilliant, chatty chat about cult-ish in general. What makes something cult? Is it rooted in ‘nerd’ or geek culture? When does something move from cult to pop culture? Is it rude when Remfry calls people a Cult? The answer to all of these is….you'll have to listen to the pod to find out.

The 3 amigos also head down to Recommendation Corner to shout up a book series, a London shop and (rather cheekily) a selection of TV shows…cheeky.

As with every episode, the pod ends on this weeks Tuesday Top 3, where we are our audience for their Top 3’s on an ever changing subject, we also have some shout outs and reveal next weeks podcast guest. Tune in and drop out y’all!
